PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE Did you take the opportunity to participate in the privilege of the SNAP Challenge? Yes, you read that right – I did say privilege. Because no matter your political leanings, your feelings about government assistance, or your opinion on whether the benefits cut from $4.40 per person per day to $4.36 is significant. This Challenge was about understanding food insecurity and realizing how privileged we are to be food secure.

I was fighting a bad respiratory infection leading up to and during our SNAP Challenge, so I was not able to fully participate as I did last year. Nevertheless, I still had some incredible insights during my week. The first was the realization that my doctor’s office co-pay ($25) and my prescription ($10) totaled more than my entire SNAP benefits for the week ($30.50). In just two hours I had spent the equivalent of one week’s worth of groceries on my medical needs. How many people are making the choice between medical care and food every day in our community? And as a woman, I have to ask – how many mothers are choosing to buy their kids food rather than taking care of their own health?

My second insight was the lack of nutritious food at the Dollar General where I purchased my week’s groceries. Having been through the Challenge last year, I was much wiser on how to make my dollars stretch.

I knew the items I really needed and the ones I could live without. But in a food desert, almost everything available is processed. I am no domestic goddess, and I’m the first to admit I very often reach for frozen veggies over fresh to quickly prep for my busy family. However, imagine if canned vegetables (very high in sodium) were your only option? The meat options were even worse – my only choices (whether I could afford it or not) were frozen, fried chicken patties or a tube of pre-packaged ground beef.

My final insight was the quality of the food where I shopped. Because I was sick, I had to “cheat” and consume some healthy options to help my body recoup. At the end of the Challenge, I had some SNAP foods left over, and was faced with the decision whether to use them or not. Why wouldn’t I use the generic groceries I had bought? My first concern was the expiration date my foods – all were 2015, but more than half were 2016. The label on my ground beef (which also expired in 2015 and was not frozen) explained that the color of the product was “normal” and urged me “do not freeze.” What chemicals and carcinogens are people putting in their bodies every day just to survive?

What I’ve discovered first-hand with this year’s Challenge are the compounding issues poverty creates. Last year, I was simply concerned that I felt hungry and unsatisfied the entire week. I was moved to tears thinking about the children who might have felt the same way. This year, my concerns were amplified. Food deserts are adding to the health crisis in our community. I am even more moved to action to participate in Seeds of Change. With all my options in our League, I can choose to earn credits and spend my time in nearly countless opportunities. I can be trained, socialize, recruit new members, raise money, and more. Imagine the impact if I choose to earn some of my JLC credits being a catalyst for lasting community change? We had a great turnout of more than 200 A Very Merry Holiday Tour Recap people at the Holiday Tour Cocktail party and over $7,000 was raised from the silent auction items. On the day of the Holiday Tour, participants not only got to walk through six beautiful homes but also took part in some special projects. Sustainer and Past President Karen Leavengood taught holiday mailbox decorating, Laura Ketcham’s husband, Mike Ketcham held cooking demonstrations, and there were also opportunities to decorate sack bags for the Chattanooga Area Food Bank.

Elizabeth Griffin (Placement Committee) serves as a wonderful Advisor for the Holiday Tour Committee, Education and Training, and Arrangements. Elizabeth is always willing to step up when there is a need in the League and leads by example in that she already had 22 membership credits when this League Chatt went to print! Fig and Goat Cheese Bruschetta Page 138 1 ¼ cups chopped dried mission figs ⅓ cup sugar ⅓ cup coarsely chopped orange sections 1 teaspoon grated orange zest ⅓ cup fresh orange juice (about 1 orange) ½ teaspoon chopped fresh rosemary ¼ teaspoon freshly ground pepper 40 (½-inch-thick) slices French baguette, toasted 1 ¼ cups crumbled goat cheese 5 teaspoons finely chopped walnuts

Tuesday, December 9 Time: After 5:30 p.m.

Bring the figs, sugar, orange, orange zest, orange juice, rosemary and pepper to a boil in small saucepan. Cover and reduce the heat. Simmer for 10 minutes or until the figs are tender. Cook, uncovered, for 5 minutes longer or until thickened, stirring constantly. Remove from the heat. Cool to room temperature. Top each baguette slice with a 1 ½ teaspoons of the fig jam and 1 ½ teaspoons of the goat cheese. Arrange on a baking sheet and sprinkle evenly with the walnuts. Broil under a preheated broiler for 2 minutes or until walnuts begin to brown. Serve warm. NOTE: Fig jam may be prepared up to 3 days in advance and stored in the refrigerator. Bring to room temperature before serving. Serves 20.

DEAR ADVISOR...HELP! I am on the very busiest committee of all committees ever, and I just found out I am having triplets, got a new job and am moving to a new house. My life is super crazy, and I don’t think I can fulfill my placement, but I love, love, love the Junior League. What can I do?

Dearest Advisee, First of all, thank you for coming to me with your concerns and for asking for the help you need. As your advisor, I am here to guide you when you need guidance, and I am always happy to HELP. There are several options available to you, all of which fall under the broad category of “Special Active Membership Categories”, and all of which are designed to help you with your League experience in an ever-changing world. Here they are:



Leave of Absence: If you are an Active member, are current in your dues and have performed your JLC duties, you may take a leave of absence for one full League Year or the remainder of the current League Year. You are excused from Placement and Membership credits, and yet, the year is still counted toward the total number of active years required to become eligible for Sustainer status. You can use a Leave of Absence one time only, and you must still fulfill your financial obligations and re-engage in JLC activities when the year is complete.



Sabbatical: If you have completed at least one full active year and are current on your dues, you may take a sabbatical for one League year or the remainder of the current League year. If you take a sabbatical, you are excused from Placement and Membership Credits, BUT the year is NOT counted toward your total active years required to become eligible for Sustainer status. Requests for a sabbatical must be in writing and submitted to the Placement Chair by March 1 for consideration for the following League year. You must still fulfill your financial obligations and re-engage in JLC activities when the year is complete.



Maternity: You might also consider requesting a Maternity status to reduce your Membership Credit accrual and/or Placement activities for the League year. Typically, Maternity status requirements reduce your Membership Credits requirements and Placement activities by one-half.



Senior Active: If you are eligible to become a Sustainer, but choose to remain Active, you can request a status change to Senior Active. Your dues and PFC remain the same as an Active, but all other membership requirements are limited. You must request Senior Active status in writing, by March 1 for the following League year.



Double Placement: If you previously completed a Double Placement, which was approved by the Placement Committee and Board, you can receive Placement credit in this hectic year for the prior extra placement you fulfilled. You must still fulfill your financial and Membership Credit obligations to the League.

24 Total Credits Laura Ketcham Placement Chair

Even though our annual event isn’t until the spring, Kids in the Kitchen is already busy! This winter and into the spring, we’ll be participating in Hamilton County Super Food nights to help highlight the importance of healthy eating in our schools. This year our booth will feature a “Portion Distortion” display, will serve a red pepper hummus dip with vegetables and we will be offering free Kashi cookies.

Our first event is December 11 at East Lake Elementary and volunteer shifts are available on the volunteer calendar. These nights have a huge audience and it is a great opportunity for us to reach families in food desert communities and give them new resources on how to improve their health.

We’re working on finalizing the date and location of our Kids in the Kitchen event, so stay tuned to future League Chatt issues for more details and ways you can help!

Lots of our 2014-15 Mini-Grants projects are already up and running, and getting lots of press! The Chattanooga Times Free Press Community News section featured the following programs recently:

 



Third graders at Wallace A. Smith will have access to cameras to create a student-run newspaper; teacher Chasity Rehagen’s goal is to encourage students to express themselves & take ownership of their education. The paper will run monthly throughout the school year.

Another third grade class at Wallace A. Smith will participate in a classroom economy project in which students earn credit or debt based on their behavior and work. Teacher Leann Maretti reports that students will be required to keep track of their earnings and weekly income, and at the end of each four-week pay period, they will be given a paycheck and required to pay bills. Students will learn about bill-paying, savings and how to budget for extra items they’d like to buy from the classroom store. They will also learn about supply & demand and receive important instruction on consumer choices and finances at an early age.

Two Central High School teachers have purchased valuable lab and forensics equipment with their Mini-Grants funds. This equipment will give students firsthand experience of scientific principles that they’ve only been able to read about in textbooks before now. These grants have given valuable access to tools that students wouldn’t otherwise be able to use in their classrooms; in the past teachers have had to show videos or try to explain the concept in the abstract. Tina Cotreau-Guillot’s forensic science class will be able to model DNA fingerprinting, and she says” It’s the application of the science that makes it more real – more valuable – and grabs their interest.” And as chemistry teacher Brielle Farrow stated, “getting them to be hands on and actually do the activity is important. It brings all the book work and lectures to life.”

Over the next 6 months, the Mini-Grants committee itself will be reporting to the membership on specific projects that each committee member has chosen to follow and highlight, in order to bring attention to all of the wonderful efforts of our teachers in Hamilton County schools.

We also have some contact numbers posted on the wall in the house in the event you encounter any issues with the instructions or deactivating the alarm properly.

Several JLC members, like Angela Ballard, used the reach of social media to post about their SNAP Challenge experience, documenting meals and grocery lists and all the highs and lows during the week of November 2 - 9. At the end of the seven-day challenge, Ballard had this to say on Facebook:

JLC SNAP Challenge

"[My husband] Mike and I agreed that it was easier this year than last year, and for two big reasons. First, we knew what we were getting into, which helped us make smarter shopping choices. Second, we ate from our garden. I believe gardens are the key to solving our community's food problems. They make us healthier eaters, and they connect us to our food in a way that even the most mindful grocery shopping cannot. Gardens are wonderful teaching tools for children and help keep seniors active, too. Gardens are also the best way for SNAP recipients to stretch their shopping budgets, because SNAP benefits can be used to purchase fruit and vegetable seeds. It's very much the "teach a man to fish" concept -teach a man to garden, and he'll have fresh fruit and vegetables every day, whether he lives in a food desert or not.�

GARDENS & OUTREACH Our garden work is in hibernation mode until early spring 2015, but we are busy doing a lot of educational outreach throughout the winter! Our first “Fast and Fresh” class and our Highland Park Food Day event both had great attendance and we introduced a lot of people to two new squash recipes! We’re including them both below. Try them out this winter!

Butternut Squash Chile Ingredients: 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 small butternut squash, peeled and cubed (about 2 cups) Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1/2 large yellow onion, roughly chopped (optional) 2 cups diced red, yellow, or orange bell peppers 1 tablespoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon dried oregano 2 medium cloves garlic, minced 1 chipotle chili in adobo, diced (optional) 2 cups homemade or store-bought low-sodium vegetable broth 2 (15 ounce) cans black beans, drained and rinsed

Directions: Heat the oil in a 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add the butternut squash and season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until lightly browned, 8 to 10 minutes. Add the onion and peppers, stirring and cooking until softened, about 3 minutes. Add the cumin, oregano and garlic and cook until aromatic, about 1 minute.

Add the chipotle pepper, stock, and beans and cook until the squash has finished cooking, about 10 minutes.

Season with salt and pepper. Serve with grated cheese, crunchy tortilla strips, and avocado, if desired.

Thanks to everyone who donated dry rice at the November GMM. Rice goes a long way for members of our community - so the Food Bank was thrilled to receive our delivery! Also, we had a great turnout for the Tour of the Food Bank. We plan to schedule another Tour in the spring for those who were not able to attend.

Join us Tuesday, December 2 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and Wednesday, December 3 from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at the League house to decorate paper bags that will distributed to children throughout the holidays (filled with food, of course!). It will be a fun time with snacks, wine and friends! We need your help as we have promised to decorate 500 bags, so please come! Sign up on the volunteer calendar.

We will be collecting canned soup or mixed vegetables at the Sustainer Luncheon on December 5. Bring 6 (28oz) cans for one credit.

November 3 General Membership Meeting Minutes The third 2014-2015 General Membership Meeting (GMM) of Junior League of Chattanooga (JLC), League year was called to order on November 3, 2014 at 7 p.m. by President Shelley McGraw.  President McGraw welcomed members and made general announcements.  A motion was made to approve the minutes from the October GMM- all were in favor.  Betsey Bedwell gave an update on the timeline of the Strategic Planning process.  Past President Karen Leavengood presented current President Shelley McGraw and PE Angela Ballard with JLC President charms.  Pete Cooper, Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga President , spoke on the importance of endowments and community philanthropy. A Q&A Session took place.  Membership VP Christy Fazio presented results of the Membership Survey from the October GMM. Members of the Month were presented as Elizabeth Griffin and Caitlyn Ross. Credit Stars were Brooke Maedel and Jasmin Rippon.  Nominating Assistant Chair Tiffany Barr presented the candidates for PEE vote and moderated a discussion between the candidates, Community Impact VP Brooke Maedel and Fund Development VP Caroline Walker. Ballots were distributed and active members placed their votes.  Nominating Committee member Laurel Powell reminded the membership about the Centennial Task Force and that slate will take place in January.  Treasurer Kelsey Jenkins presented the Treasurer’s Report, which will be printed in the League Chatt in the future.  Executive Coordinator Jennifer Stone reported on the renovations to the League house as well as the rental process being refined.  Fund Development VP Caroline Walker updated the membership on the Holiday Tour and encouraged shift sign ups and attendance at the Cocktail Party.  Community Impact VP Brooke Maedel presented the process of the SNAP Challenge and how members may go about documenting their participation.
