Sustainer Spotlight: Amy Rhyne

By: Cara Tucker

How long have you been a member of the Junior League of Charlotte, Inc. (JLC)?

I have been a member of the JLC since 2011.

What is your current placement in the JLC?

I currently serve on the Sustainer Board of Directors. I also serve as the Co-chair of the Sustainer Retention Committee and the Sassy Sustainers Central social group.

What is your favorite JLC memory?

My favorite memories were made with the Alexander Youth Network (AYN). AYN leadership is top-notch and very passionate about the organization’s mission, so the partnership between JLC and AYN was seamless. The kids always looked forward to our visits! My experiences with AYN gave me a deeper appreciation for the JLC and the impact we have on the Charlotte area community.

What was your favorite JLC placement as an Active Member?

My favorite JLC placement was serving as the Social Committee Chair. Because I have lived in four different cities as a single adult woman, brokering connections with like-minded women is important to me. Volunteerism will follow if we foster those personal connections.

How has your membership in the JLC impacted your personal and/or professional life?

I’ve met some of my best friends in the JLC. These relationships have kept me in Charlotte.

What advice would you give to Provisional and Active Members?

The Junior League gives you an opportunity to meet lifelong friends and serve in the community, but you must show up, attend the meetings, go to the socials and fulfill your placement obligations. You will get out of the experience what you put into it. What is your neighborhood in the Charlotte area? Dilworth.

Where is your hometown?

I was born in Saginaw, Michigan, but grew up in Charlotte. I’ve lived in other cities as an adult, but there is no place like the Queen City.

What inspires you to stay involved with the JLC?

I love the volunteer opportunities that we are afforded. It is supremely important to me to give back to the community where I live and work, but I don’t have the time to vet volunteer opportunities. The JLC’s established relationships with community partners makes volunteerism simple.
