Slimming World - Perton

Meet Becky - one of my fabulous Slimming World members. Becky has lost 4st 5.5lb with only 8.5lb left to her personal target. As a result she no longer has to wear specially padded shoes, worn because her arches were collapsing under her weight.

Becky no longer has to worry when she sits in a chair that she will either get stuck or it’ll give way underneath her (Becky wouldn’t sit in my sister’s garden chairs as she got stuck once!)

Becky now sleeps better, she has more energy but, most of all she says, “I like myself and I don’t avoid mirrors or the camera!

Slimming world has given me happiness and I truly believe a longer (hopefully) healthier life with my little ones. As an older mum of young children this is so important and also as a role model for them to adopt healthy habits as they get older.”

Members of Pattingham Drama, three in particular who play the heroes, are busy rehearsing their next performance which is a delightful play set in France in 1959 about three First World War veterans who now live in a home for old soldiers. There is a feeling of waiting for the inevitable demise, but is a very funny comedy. In Tom Stoppard’s hilarious and poignant translation of Gerald Sibleyras’s Heroes, we meet three First World War veterans who pass their monotony-filled days in a military hospital by engaging in verbal battles of long-forgotten military campaigns, grumblings about the staff, and reflections on their lives.

Henri is afflicted with a gammy leg, Gustave suffers from agoraphobia, and Philippe passes out because of a piece of shrapnel lodged in his brain. Their cantankerous camaraderie becomes strained when Gustave conjures up an escape plan.

Looking over the cemetery to the poplars beyond, they dream of freedom. Will today be the day they finally make it to Indochina or perhaps only as far as the top of the hill? The comedy will be performed by Pattingham Drama Group at Pattingham Village Hall from 8th – 11th May 2024.

Gipsy Love at Codsall Village Hall

The award-winning Tettenhall Operatic Company is presenting a semi-staged production of Franz Lehar’s Gipsy Love at Codsall Village Hall on Thursday and Friday 4th and 5th July (7.30pm) and Saturday 6th July 2024 (2.30pm).

The story of a young woman who is betrothed to the son of the Lord Lieutenant of the County but runs away with Antonio, a local gipsy, is full of beautiful Lehar melodies as well as several lively comic numbers. Set in Victorian times, it is a story of unfulfilled romance as well as power and vested interests that win out in the end.

Perton Townwomen’s Guild

The Townswomen’s Guild (TWG) is a national organisation founded in 1929 and we are delighted to have The Princess Royal as our current patron.

The purpose of TWG is for women of all ages to meet, make new friends, learn new skills, find new interests, help the community and most of all, enjoy themselves Perton TWG was established in February 1988. The first meeting was held at the home of Mrs Sheena Davies, who was elected Chairman and later went on to be the Guild’s President.

The present Guild meets on the first Wednesday evening of the month at 7.15pm in the Madeline Moor Room, Civic Centre, Perton. Our current Chairman is Gillian Davies and President Marjorie Harding.

The meetings typically consist of a short business meeting, followed by an informal presentation from a local guest speaker. The evening concludes with tea, coffee and biscuits but perhaps most importantly, a chance to chat and socialise. New members and visitors are always warmly welcomed.

In addition to our regular meetings, we also get together for days out in the local area, the location of the outing often inspired by our guest speakers. Over the last few months we have visited the Kingswood Trust, Albrighton, a beautiful nine-acre site where they focus outdoor learning through nature. We have spent a relaxing morning on a canal trip from Hordern Road to Wightwick and enjoyed a really interesting time at Stourbridge Glass Museum.

As a community organisation, we also enjoy taking part in the annual Perton Carnival. During the early years we hosted a cake stall, but more recently we have organised a fun Washing Line Tombola. Playing on the traditional concept, the idea is for adults and children to choose a sock from the line, where a ticket hidden in the toe is matched to a prize.

Supporting charities is another of the Guild’s interests and we are pleased to have supported more than forty local charities since the Guild’s inception. This year we set up a Facebook page, but this is still very much in its infancy.
