Local Choir to perform Bach’s Mass in B Minor at their Spring Concert

At their Spring Concert, the Wombourne & District Choral Society will perform Bach’s Mass in B Minor. The concert will be held on Saturday 23rd March 2024 at the Church of St John’s in the Square, Wolverhampton commencing at 7.30pm. The conductor will be the Choir’s Musical Director, Edward Caine, with accompaniment by a professional orchestra of some 24 musicians and four soloists.

Why you should be planning your family Easter Holiday for 2025 now!

This might seem very early, after all we haven’t celebrated Easter 2024 yet. However, 2025 offers you the chance to bag a bargain holiday in destinations including Cyprus, Crete and Turkey.

Our advice is to double-check your school’s Easter Holiday dates as Easter is late next year, with Bank Holidays on the 18th April (Good Friday) and 21st (Easter Monday). In Staffordshire our school’s break-up on Friday 11th April 2025 and return on Monday 28th April 2025. However, in the southern counties most schools break up a week earlier on Friday 4th April and return on Tuesday 22nd April (after Easter Monday).

Why does this matter?

Put simply it means that there are great prices to be had for ‘early Easter holidays’ for 7 nights departing 4/5/6th April, and for ‘late Easter holidays’ departing on the 20/21st April. Conversely, the week to avoid is around 12th-19th April 2025 when prices are higher. When Easter holidays fall in March families head to the Canary Islands, Dubai and the Caribbean in search of winter sun. However, with Easter 2025 falling in April destinations including Cyprus, Crete and Turkey, with average temperatures between 16 and 22 degrees centigrade, are worthy of consideration. It may be a little chilly in the evening but book a resort with a heated pool and lots for the children to do, and you’ll find great value in these destinations.

Watch Manager celebrates 30 years’ service and encourages people to become an on-call firefighter

A Watch Manager who recently celebrated three decades of serving communities in Staffordshire is encouraging people to join the fire service as an on-call firefighter and make a difference.

It was back in 1993 when Paul Danby joined Brewood Community Fire Station as an on-call firefighter.

At the time of joining, Paul was working as a carpenter. It was encouragement and support from his wife and family that led to him taking the opportunity of joining us.

Paul became a Watch Manager in 2002 and, 31 years later, his dedication and passion remains the same and he is urging people to consider a career as an on-call firefighter.

“By becoming an on-call firefighter, you will learn valuable life-skills and there will be opportunities for career progression at the service.

The support Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service provide is second to none and you will feel part of the team straight away when you first join.

You’ll be able build your confidence and learn to work as a team, but, most importantly, make a difference to local communities and help those in their hour of need.”

On-call firefighters provide ‘on-call’ cover to their local fire station and respond to a range of emergencies and incidents as well as community initiatives.

Unlike full time firefighters, on-call firefighters are not based at the fire station 24 hours a day. When an emergency occurs, they will be notified by an alerter that they need to go to their fire station within five minutes.

Paul remembers: “One job I was called to involved a single-vehicle collision with a woman on the A449. We were the first emergency services to arrive at the scene.

I carried out life-saving CPR on the woman and she was then taken to hospital by paramedics.

Thankfully, she survived.”

Whilst admitting there have been plenty of ups and downs throughout his career as an on-call firefighter, the excitement for the role has always been there for Paul.

“I’ve loved every minute of my 30 years’ at the fire service. We’re able to make a difference to people’s lives everyday and that gives me such a buzz.

If you’ve bought a new home or you just want to update your home decoration, a new carpet is a great way to bring some style while adding comfort. It can keep your room warm in winter and cool in summer. Carpet flooring also has the ability to absorb noise so it makes a room much quieter.

Choosing a carpet that’s suitable for your home can be quite a challenge, so to make your carpet selection easier here’s a quick guide:

Choosing colours - A darker coloured carpet can make a room feel cosier. A lighter coloured carpet can make the room appear larger. Choosing the right colour for your carpet is important because this can affect the colour scheme of the room and sometimes the entire house.

Choosing the fibre - Generally, wool, nylon, polyester, and olefin are popular choices. Each has its pros and cons depending on your needs. For instance, some fibres are more suitable than others if you have young kids or pets. Wool is used for high-quality carpets. Wool feels luxurious, warm and soft underfoot and is resilient and highly durable. Since this is natural, it’s hypo-allergenic. However, it stains pretty easily so you might want to clean up quickly when something spills.

Nylon: This man-made fibre is perfect for high-traffic areas such as the living room and the dining room. This is also an ideal choice if you have kids or pets because it is stain resistant so it cleans easily.

Polyester: Similar to nylon this is also stain resistant. Polyester also feels luxurious and soft and its appearance is similar to wool. But this is best used in low-traffic areas because once it has “matted” it will not spring back like other fibres.

Olefin: This is an inexpensive choice. It’s also stain resistant because it does not absorb liquid easily. Due to the way this fibre is coloured, it does not fade quickly and it can handle cleaning products without fading. However, it is fragile and more easily damaged than other carpets.

Choosing the type of carpet - Aside from the fibre and colour, you will need to choose the type of carpet you want. This can accentuate your home decor and provide an interesting style to your room. Carpets can be made with loop pile, cut pile, or a combination of cut and loop piles.

Loop pile or berber: This is recommended for formal rooms because of its elegant appearance but it’s not rec-

ommended if you have pets since it will snag their claws very easily.

Cut pile: This type of carpet is ideal for families with kids and pets because it will not snag like loops. Also, this has a more luxurious and traditional look than loop pile.

Cut and loop piles: A combination of the two, this type of carpet can be used to create a distinctive pattern across your floor such as squares and swirls, which is good for hiding dirt and footprints.

Maintenance is key to make your carpets last longer. Make sure to vacuum at least once a week and place a rug on areas that are most likely to soil such as the entrance. You should also remove liquid spills instantly with a stain remover recommended for your carpet.

A Brief History of Mothering Sunday

Like many traditions and festivities, Mothering Sunday began with a religious purpose. Held on the fourth Sunday in Lent, exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday, it was originally a day to honour and give thanks to the Virgin Mary, also known as Mother Mary.

Such celebrations required people to visit their ‘mother’ church - the main church or cathedral in a family’s area. The spread of Christianity throughout Europe in the 16th century increased the celebrations and firmly put Mothering Sunday on the calendar.

It was believed to be essential for people to return to their home ‘mother’ church to make it a true familyhonoured occasion. The gatherings reunited families and gave children who worked as domestic servants, or as apprentices away from home (from as early as ten years old), the opportunity to have the day off to join their family and see their mother.

Whilst the day had a firm following for many centuries since the 16th century, by 1935 it started to decrease in popularity and was celebrated less and less in Europe, until WWII. The Americans and Canadians celebrated Mother’s Day during the war, feeling a crucial need to give thanks to their mothers whilst away at war.

The Brits and other Europeans followed their comrades and they too gave thanks to their mothers; since then it earns pride of place on the UK calendar.
