A New Typological Response to Chinese Local Culture for Urban Primary Schools — The Stacked Courtyard Cities in China are very concern with protecting kids from negative urban conditions while providing them with a friendly study space which is easily accessible to nature. The site of this primary school is located in a community with many residential buildings and a Chinese traditional temple. The design of the school was inspired by the traditional Chinese garden, which include man-made landscape features, and historical

residential courtyard. The school design divided one large school yard into stacked small yards representing a mountain. It uses space more effectively by providing a more enjoyable and more accessible open space for kids and teachers .The interior spaces are organic shapes that interact with nature. The mountain-like exterior combined with the pagoda of the temple create the atmosphere of a Chinese painting.

Spatial Idea of Interlocked Cubes Practiced in Residential Design — Interlocked Cubes Residence The client for this project is a couple who live together and also work in the same house. One of them is a singer and actor, and the other one is a film maker. Because they collaborate on some projects, their work areas require both shared spaces and individual spaces. This project design considers the properties of public and private space. Each client has their own studio for their employee to work in. The south side which faces the park

is the main entrance and public area. As the space extend to the north, which is an alley, it becomes more private. In addition the house has three floors and the top floors are more private. The house has a public theater displaying their work. It also has a convenient pathway for pedestrian access between the park and the alley. This design is a practice of creating different spatial quality with a very simple geometric shape.

ARH_653_01 MS: Introductory Design Studio 2 Mark Cruz & Keith Plymale Fall 2015 Sutro Bath, San Francisco, United States.

Public Movie Exhibition Hall Framing the Views of Natural Landscape — The Folded Shell Theater Good film-makers carefully plan the foreground and background of a film. Their project's arrangement of space and composition of elements can bring inspiration to architects. Therefore, this project developed from analysis of the spatial and framing skills and ideas in a film. The first step is abstract and it extracts the hidden potential of the lines and surfaces in a series of screen shots. The site Sutro Bath was a public saltwater swimming

pool at the turn of the century, and burned down in 1966. It was abandoned and left in concrete ruins. The development of this project build on the ruins as opposed to clean them. It connects and respects the history of the site by using a modern design to respond to the existing features. The folded surfaces and openings frame different views on this site which create spatial illusion that evoke a deam-like experience for visitors.

ARH_609_01 MS: Intermediate Design Studio 1 Peter Suen & Mark Myers Spring 2016 Heron's Head Park, San Francisco, United States.

Ferry Terminal to Cemetery with Gliding Light As A Monument of Death — The Ferry Terminal Church This project supposes that Alcatraz Island in the Bay Area has become a cemetery. A specific ferry terminal is required for people to board the ferry to Alcatraz. This terminal can be the site for a church. People come here to start a journey with lifeand-death and remember the who lives in their memory. This church is a concrete shell with its bottom open to the water. The reflection of the natural light on the water will flash in the dim

interior. Two floating wood boats follow the tide rise and fall in the interior, which symbolizes lifetime. The wall attached to the exterior pathway is made of translucent concrete. When visitors walk along this pathway, the moving shadow of their movement will be seen in the interior. It looks like a silent shadow film which stands for the soul and spirit of the deceased. It connects the real world and illusory world in people's hearts.

ARH_608_01 Advanced Design Studio 1: Concept, Context, & Typology Mueckenheim, Mark & Paz De Moura Castro, Maria Fall 2016 526 Mission Street, San Francisco, United States.

Using Columns to Define A Unbounded Reading Space — Inner Forest Courtyard Public Library The concept of this design is a bowl-shaped space which allocates more space to the ground level for public and provides a quiet outdoor reading space in noisy urban area. Instead of having a few thick columns, the project uses over 700 slender columns which provide a unconfined and graceful space to encourage people to walk in. A ramp spirals upward and interlocks with the columns to make the structure more stable.

The courtyard in the middle of the building reduces the depth of the interior space and brings more natural light into the space. As it opens to the downtown skyline, people can have a good view of the skyscrapers. When sliding door opens to connect the interior with the courtyard, the border between the interior and exterior spaces become blurred and bounder-less. People will enjoy the inwards outdoor space with good views around.

Farm Inspired Neighborhood Slaughter House with Butcher Shop — Inner Farm Meat Market Because of the food industry wants to increase production and livestock has been treated with antibiotics, many consumers become cautious about the source of the products they buy. The program require this project has an area to store livestock. Therefore, the concept for this project is to create a farm that allows consumers to inspect the livestock they buy from the shop. The supervision by the customer will motivate

the food industry to improve their production process. This build up the trust between the shop and its customers. Another concept is "bridging". The site is re-shaped to create valleys. Like a bridge, the building connect the higher points and crossing the valley from above. This create multiple crisscross spaces without breaking the height limited on this site. The design also strive for larger sunlight range for the farm.

ARH_604_01 Material And Methods Of Construction: Building Detailing Gill, David Summer 2016 San Francisco

Wall Section Studies with Material Practice of Residential Design — Canvas Residential Building The main purpose of this project is to study the method of construction and waterproofing by solving the problem in our design. This project required a model built according to the construction method in the real world. This residence has a steel frame structure which makes more indoor space available to residents on this narrow site. The ground floor have an open garage. The railing and sunshade systems are based on

sailboat - wood, metal and canvas. The second and third floors have balconies for people to enjoy the outdoor space during good weather. The third floor has an upward bi-folding frame structure covered with canvas for sunshade. The interior space and balcony lighting can be change by adjusting the sunshade panels. This balcony, which has a comfortable natural light condition with fresh air, will be a place for relaxing.

Pavilions Design for Displaying The Arts of Four Different Artists — Pavilions For Artists This project consist of four sub-projects, each sub-projects presents an art pavilion for exhibiting specific artwork by different artists. The pavilion design displays the artwork well so the visitors can enjoy the artwork. In other words, the design of the pavilions helps to create a better exhibition effect, and at the same time is independent of the art work so it won't confuse the audience. Because each artist has unique

characteristic, here complemented the work being exhibited. James Turrell's "Light Reignfall" requires viewers to enter a metal metal sphere to view a light show. Nuno Ramos' "The Global of Death" is a show in a steel frame box. Pipilotti Rist's "Under The Sky" is a projection artwork with organic shapes. Richard Serra's "Junction" is made of large scale twisted steel sheets that people can walk around between them.
