CKT OFFERS A LOVING EMBRACE TO OUR LGBTQ+ FAMILY AND FRIENDS

“Light one candle for the Maccabee children Give thanks that their light didn’t die Light one candle for the pain they endured When their right to exist was denied”

- Peter Yarrow

I write these words between Chanukah and Passover, two of our most observed Jewish holidays which enshrine within them our most precious commodity: the right to be free. Chanukah recounts the Maccabean fight for religious freedom against the Syrian-Greek oppressor who sought to stamp out Judaism by outlawing Torah study, Brit Milah, Shabbat observance and the worship of God in the Temple in Jerusalem. Pesach recounts our people’s liberation from Egyptian bondage after 400 plus years of servitude to Pharaoh.

Both of these holidays remind us of the horrific cost of living as, “less than”, as a persecuted minority because of our beliefs, and our desire to be seen as equals, to be treated with respect and dignity.

In our world today, there are still too many who feel enslaved, who are forced to live in the shadows because of who they are. Specifically, I am speaking about our lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, trans and queer (LGBTQ+) individuals who still have to fight against discrimination, prejudice, bigotry and hate. In my career, I have encountered too many fellow Jews and especially teens, who live in the “closet” unable to publicly affirm their God given biological make-up, to be who they are, due to fears of alienation, persecution or worse. To make matters worse, for too long religious institutions including synagogues have at best tolerated their presence, and at other times denied their participation in the community. As a result, many of our fellow Jews have shunned Jewish life especially within synagogues, even Reform synagogues.

It is for this reason that Cantor Debbie and I have joined the Broward cohort of Keshet (which means rainbow in Hebrew), an organization whose mission includes fostering respect and inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community into Jewish life, advocating for their rights, and making sure our synagogue is doing all that it can to demonstrate our warm embrace of these, our fellow Jews, who too often feel marginalized, maligned and left out. To that end, we will be reviewing all our policies, administrative materials, signage, and social media platforms to consider how welcoming we really are.

We will also be thinking of new programs and events which show our support, including speakers, a special Shabbat during Pride month, and participation in the Pride March as we did this past year in Wilton Manors.

The Cantor and I are seeking members of CKT who would be willing to form a task force to assist us in this work. Whether you are a part of the LGBTQ+ community, have family members who are, or are committed to this principle of welcoming and inclusion, I encourage you to reach out to us in the coming weeks. Keshet will be working with us to help us promote the message that CKT is a safe space for all, where all are free to be who they are, where no one is denied their right to exist.

We Jews, who cherish freedom perhaps more than most because of our historic experience, are called upon to live up to one of the most profound teachings of our faith, to remember always that we are ALL created in the divine image.

Please consider joining our task force and help us realize this mitzvah not just in words as a service of the lips, but as a service of the heart, helping CKT to be a shining example of love and respect for all created in the divine image.

LShalom,

Rabbi Bradd Boxman

THERE IS SO MUCH GOING ON AT KOL TIKVAH...

Where do we begin?

As 2025 gets under way we are in the midst of planning our Scholar in Residence weekend with Noah Aronson for the weekend of January 31-February 2, 2025. Noah has become a bit of an icon in the Jewish community, so you won’t want to miss the opportunity to experience his lively music. Thank you to our Adult Education Committee for their hard work to make this weekend a reality.

Then in February is Kol Tikvah’s biggest event of the year, WoodstoCKT! I look forward to seeing everyone at this event that should be one of the best parties we have ever put on. And the night will be extra special as we honor a Kol Tikvah icon, Tami Isenberg. Tami has been a long-time dedicated member of Kol Tikvah and has done so much for our congregation as well as our community.

And then before you know it we will be coming up Purim with our always popular Shpiel followed by Passover and the Woman of Valor event, this year honoring Hedy Sussman & Tina Beale. Please come out and support these amazing ladies who been active committee leaders for years. Besides the events, we have a few endeavors under way.

We have begun our campaign to honor Rabbi Boxman before he retires next year. Rabbi Boxman is now the longest serving Rabbi in Broward County, and we are so fortunate to have him as our Chief Spiritual Officer. Rabbi’s mission is to leave our congregation financially secure so that we can focus our efforts on programming to meet our community’s needs long into the future. I hope everyone will participate in this campaign.

Speaking of Rabbi leaving, our Rabbinic Search Committee has started their work. I hope that every congregant comes to a focus group meeting and/or completes a survey to provide your feedback in what you are looking for in clergy for our synagogue as we move into the second quarter of the 21st century. Please take advantage of this opportunity to have a say in our future direction.

And as I write this in December, we are beginning our talks with Temple Beth Orr of Coral Springs about a future combination of our congregations. No matter how this ends up, I hope everyone will welcome the members of Beth Orr to our fold when they come looking for a house of worship. As the new year begins, we will also be forming our nominating committee. We are always looking for fresh talent for our board, so please consider submitting yourself for the slate of candidates. This year we only have general board seats up for election. We are fortunate to have many dedicated, invested members who serve as leaders of Kol Tikvah. And my experience is that between the relationships that I have built and knowing that I am working to building a strong Jewish community for Northwest Broward County makes serving on the board so rewarding.

On behalf of my wife Cathy and myself, I want to wish your family a Happy, Healthy, Peaceful and Prosperous New Year.

Sincerely,

justin@koltikvah.net

Dear Congregation Kol Tikvah Families –

As the Gregorian calendar pages turn to 2025, I cannot help but think ahead to what this year could bring for us.

Kol Tikvah is in an unprecedented time. It almost feels surreal to think about what we are experiencing compared to what is going on elsewhere in the country and around the globe. In the coming months, our families will:

• Have the opportunity to help shape Kol Tikvah’s future through participation in a critical Capital campaign;

• Potentially help reshape Jewish life in Northwest Broward County as we continue conversations with Temple Beth Orr;

• Help chart our path as we seek a new spiritual leader to follow Rabbi Boxman after his retirement in June 2026.

The opportunity to help shape the future of Kol Tikvah through participating in the Rabbinic search process is perhaps one of the most monumental and critical actions you can take as part of a congregational community. In the coming months, our members will have a series of opportunities to have their voices heard through a series of focus groups. Our Rabbi Search Committee, lead by congregants Ellis Mass, Lois Rubin and Sharon Vogel, is tasked with gathering this critical data and then develop a profile of what we are looking for in our next Rabbi.

Following our focus groups, our committee will meet with candidates who are not only looking for their next professional role but looking to find their ideal match in a community to call home. In the months that follow comes a series of confidential and deeply personal conversations that will ultimately end in us finding our next Rabbi.

If this sounds more like dating via a matchmaker than a job search – you are right, it is!

My hope is that everyone in our congregational community takes advantage of the opportunity to participate in these focus groups and – when the opportunity presents itself, meet our candidates.

Our hope is that this process is one we do not engage in for many years to come, which is why your feedback in the coming months is so critical. Please be sure to make it a point to participate.

If you have any questions, you are welcome to reach out to our chairs at rabbisearch@koltikvah.net.

I cannot help but reflect on all that we have accomplished in the last few months, and look forward to building the future with all of you.

Shalom!

Music Speaks Louder Than Words

Every year in January at Kol Tikvah, rehearsals begin for the annual Purim Shpiel. Here at Congregation Kol Tikvah, the Purim Shpiel is a really big deal. Cantor Arnold set the quality bar extremely high, and I am committed to continuing this wonderful tradition.

This year’s Purim Shpiel has been written by our very own, mega-talented Ellis Mass. The Purim story will be presented as a parody of the hit musical and movie, Mean Girls. Last year, over 40 Kol Tikvah congregants took part in our production of Purim According to Annie. In fact, the most important and powerful part of putting on Purim Shpiels is the bonding of the cast and crew members. Building a community that includes members ranging in age from 5 to 87 is incredibly special. It is so rare for such a diverse group of people to come together to create something so magical.

If any of you reading this have an interest in joining this year’s Shpiel community, we can find a meaningful part for you to play. We need actors, dancers, singers, stage hands, set builders, prop gatherers, makeup artists, and so much more. I can promise that you will be enriched by the experience and have tons of fun.

You may be wondering, “What is the origin of the Purim Shpiel?” The Purim Shpiel dates back to the mid 1500’s in Europe. The integration of texts, theater, music, dance, songs and costumes for Purim Shpiels is actually the origin of Yiddish Theater. The Purim Shpiel is considered to be the only genuine folk theater to have survived a thousand years in European culture. In Eastern Europe in the 18th century, the Shpiel evolved into satires with music and dance, often considered to be inappropriate to be performed in the synagogue so they were held outdoors. In modern times, Broadway shows have been used to retell the story of Purim, making them extra relatable for modern audiences.

As I mentioned, here at Kol Tikvah, the Purim Shpiel is an extremely huge undertaking. So when you see me stressed out over the next few months, you’ll know why. Please mark your calendars for Sunday, March 16 at 6:00 PM for this year’s Shpiel!! You will not want to miss it!

A NEW YEAR, A NEW CHAPTER: EMBRACING GROWTH IN 2025!

As we welcome a new year, we are given the gift of a fresh start, an opportunity to reflect on the past and look forward with hope and intention. It’s a time to set new goals and new opportunities for personal and professional growth.

In our preschool, we see the promise of new beginnings every day through the eyes of our children, who embrace each moment with curiosity, joy, and boundless potential. This theme is beautifully captured in the book, The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds, a story about Vashti, a young girl who discovers her creativity and confidence simply by making a mark on a blank page. Encouraged by her teacher’s belief in her abilities, Vashti’s initial dot blossoms into a vibrant expression of creativity and inspires her to explore her artistic potential. Her journey reminds us that even the smallest actions, when nurtured with encouragement, can lead to transformative growth.

Judaism, too, teaches us to embrace the opportunity for renewal. The concept of teshuvah—returning to our best selves—encourages us to reflect on how we can grow and contribute positively to the world around us. In our preschool community, we work to instill these values in our children through acts of kindness, celebrating traditions, and nurturing a sense of belonging. Each moment in the classroom is a chance for children to learn, explore, and contribute their unique light to our collective journey.

For our families, the new year is also a chance to deepen connections within our community and at home. Celebrating Shabbat, practicing tikkun olam (repairing the world), and engaging in meaningful conversations with our children can help them understand the importance of gratitude, compassion, and purpose. These values not only enrich their daily lives but also serve as the foundation for who they will become.

As we step into 2025, I invite each of us—parents, teachers, and children alike—to make our mark. Just as Vashti’s art, that began with just a simple dot grows into a colorful world of creativity, inspiring others to find their voice. Even the smallest of actions can blossom into something extraordinary. Whether through small acts of kindness, setting new intentions, or simply appreciating the blessings in our lives, we can create a year filled with growth, discovery, and joy. Together, as a community rooted in Jewish values, we have the ability to inspire one another to learn, grow, and thrive.

May this year bring health, happiness, and meaningful moments to your families. Let’s approach 2025 with open hearts, hopeful minds, and the confidence to create something beautiful.

DONATIONS TRIBUTE OPPORTUNITIES

MAKING A DONATION OR TRIBUTE TO CONGREGATION KOL TIKVAH IS MORE THAN A CHARITABLE GESTURE—IT’S A MEANINGFUL INVESTMENT IN OUR VIBRANT COMMUNITY, OUR RICH TRADITIONS, AND THE SPIRITUAL GROWTH OF ALL WHO BELONG TO IT.

If you haven’t already, consider creating a lasting tribute by dedicating a memorial plaque to be displayed on the Memorial Wall in our Sanctuary. This is a beautiful way to honor a loved one while contributing to the sacred space that fosters spiritual connection. For more tribute opportunities, please click here

In Judaism, Tzedakah (charity) is regarded as one of the most noble ways to commemorate a loved one. We invite you to make a contribution to one of our dedicated funds as a heartfelt tribute to those who have passed, ensuring their memory lives on through acts of kindness and giving.

Additionally, consider sponsoring an Oneg in honor of an event, milestone, or meaningful occasion. While many choose to sponsor a Kiddush to celebrate an anniversary or birthday, the opportunity to sponsor an Oneg extends beyond personal milestones. It can be a beautiful way to honor the Land of Israel, promote health and healing, or celebrate any cause for which you are grateful.

Your donation not only keeps the spirit of your loved ones alive, but also strengthens the bonds of our shared faith and community.

For more information, please contact our Finance Director, Lali Karni at lali@koltikvah.net or call the Temple office at 954.346.7878.

We are a vibrant community of women united by shared values, faith, and a commitment to supporting one another.

At Congregation Kol Tikvah, Sisterhood is not just a group—it’s a heartfelt community where strong, welcoming, and inclusive women come together to connect, support, and celebrate one another. Whether you’re a part of our Congregation, the ECC, or simply seeking meaningful connections, we are here to welcome you with open arms.

We started this year on a high note with our Welcome Back Happy Hour on September 12th. More than 40 incredible women joined us at Lazy Dog Restaurant in Boca for an evening filled with laughter, friendship, and the excitement of the year ahead. This year, we proudly introduced a new tradition: Sisterhood Sundays. These monthly gatherings, held during Hebrew School hours, have become a wonderful space to connect with mothers of Religious School students. From sharing cherished holiday recipes to playing Mahjong, these moments are about building bonds and finding joy in each other’s company. If you see us in one of the main building rooms, stop by and say hello—we’d love to meet you!

October brought a truly unforgettable experience, as we welcomed the talented artist Merri Novel to lead a workshop on glass-fused menorahs. Over 50 women tapped into their creativity, crafting stunning pieces of art that will grace our homes and spark stories with friends and family for years to come. The event was such a success that we’re thrilled to host another session with Merri on March 19th—mark your calendars!

In November, we celebrated one of our most beloved traditions: the Progressive Dinner. Over 50 participants joined in as gracious members of our congregation opened their homes to host appetizers, entrées, and desserts. It was a magical evening filled with delicious food, lively conversation, and the formation of new friendships—a beautiful reflection of the warmth and generosity in our community.

Our Paid-Up Membership Dinner was another highlight of the year. Featuring an incredible Hibachi dinner prepared by Hibachi Joe, this evening was made even more special thanks to Robin Shoemaker, who kindly opened her beautiful home for the event. It was a night of gratitude and celebration for the amazing women who make our Sisterhood so vibrant. We wrapped up the year on a joyful note with a festive Hanukkah Party on December 12th. This year, we added an exciting twist with Drag Bingo! The night was filled with laughter, latkes, donuts, and endless fun—a truly memorable way to celebrate the holiday together.

As we bid farewell to 2024, we want you to know that Sisterhood is always here for you. From spiritual to social and community-wide events, we are a constant presence, ready to welcome and embrace anyone looking to get involved. Join us, volunteer, or simply come and share in the joy of connection. Together, we create something extraordinary—a Sisterhood in every sense of the word. Looking ahead, we have even more exciting events planned:

• January 19th: Join us for a Mahjong Tournament—sign up now and get your new cards!

• April 27th: Celebrate with us as we honor our Women of Valor, Hedy Sussman and Tina Beale, inspiring role models who have made a difference in our community and beyond.

Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook and Instagram to stay updated on our events through June 2025.

LEARNING

All Congregation Kol Tikvah women and teens are welcome at the monthly Rosh Chodesh gathering where we will celebrate the new moon. Cantor Debbie will lead us in song and we have important conversations about Jewish subjects that relate to women.

MIND · BODY · SPIRIT

The Brotherhood of Congregation Kol Tikvah celebrated Alan Rosen as the “Mensch of the Year” on December 14, 2024.

Approximately 90 people attended and enjoyed an evening of fun, Scotch tasting, and food. Led by our MC, Cantor Debbie, the evening highlighted Alan in his role as President of the Congregation and SuperFan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. A surprise video by former Steeler Hines Ward wishing Alan well and thanking him for all he does was shown.

This award is given by Brotherhood annually to a deserving person who has gone over and above in his service to Brotherhood, the Congregation, and the community. It is named after Richard C. Schwartz who exemplified all these attributes.

Brotherhood is also planning another Men’s Night Out and is currently exploring local restaurants for options in January/February. We will send out information when it is available.

See you all soon!

KTBNG is so excited as we have officially launched KTBNG 2.0!

What does this mean? KTBNG now hosts morning events for our early risers as well as evening programs and happy hours to accommodate the busy schedules of small business owners, entrepreneurs and professionals. The formats for our gatherings and programs have evolved to meet the interests and requests of our members and we welcome you to join us at any of our events.

We recently held an incredible program at Congregation Kol Tikvah featuring Sammy Schulman, executive vice president and CFO of the Miami Heat, in collaboration with the Jewish Federation of Broward County, and had over 50 people in attendance. We networked and heard great stories from Mr. Schulman as he shared his experiences with the Miami Heat for over 35 years. We also had an informal breakfast gathering at a local bagel shop and created new connections along with meaningful conversations with like-minded business owners and professionals.

Stay tuned for more details to come on all of our upcoming events and looking forward to seeing everyone there in the new year!
