Mid Crit Reflection

Mid-terms were a revelation for me, and I was very excited to get the feedback that I did. I presented my context and analysis and my project’s general direction. I was not in love with it, but it is where I was. The reviewer brought up that I picked a landfill site and that my introduction and pitch did not align with the direction I had taken. He said, ‘Your site is dead, and you have this pitch about ecology, so where’s the ecology you’ve added to the site? I see a whole lot of buildings, but I am not seeing how all of it supports your aims.’ Frankly, I could not have agreed more. I felt like I had jumped on a run-away train at some point, and the longer it charged forward, the further I was getting away from my original intentions.

Becoming overly excited and caught up in putting down every idea that pops into my head has always been my greatest challenge though out my time studying architecture. I felt overwhelmed by the ever-expanding scope, and being advised to get back to basics and review my goals and intent was precisely what I needed. Permission to go back and regroup is what I needed, and the greatest lesson I took away from this is that I should trust my instincts and give myself the authority to grant that permission. Why wait? Perhaps that confidence in trusting my gut comes with practice, or maybe it comes with time. It’s probably both. Either way, trusting myself and naturally pausing to regroup is a maturity I look forward to achieving in due time.
