In 2023 we launched the Catalyst Fund to give JH Public Art a competitive edge to engage with exceptional public art opportunities when they arise, to match funding to close a budgetary gap, or build capacity at a pivotal moment. Importantly, the Catalyst Fund will help JH Public Art become more sustainable in the future.

Thank you to our founding investors, we are proud to report the Catalyst Fund is now $156,000 and growing.

Lighted Teepees

Artists/ Presenters: Pretty Shield Foundation

Location: Base of Snow King Mountain

Dates: October 3-6, 2023

Sponsors: Petria and Scott Fossel, Leslye and David Hardie, Berte Hirschfield, Carolyn Miller, and Terry Winchell and Claudia Bonnist of Fighting Bear Antiques

On behalf of the Intertribal Gathering planning and supporting partners, and in partnership with the Pretty Shield Foundation and Rocky Mountain Tribal Leaders Council, JH Public Art celebrated the connection between communities, culture, and land with the Lighting of the Teepees attended by over 500 community members on Wednesday, October 4th in Phil Baux Park at the base of Snow King Mountain.

As the sun set, the audience enjoyed a special performance of REMATRIATE by Patti Baldes, featuring willow buffalo sculptures brought to life by dancers in a reflection of the relationship between Tribes, buffalo, and the land. Followed by the biggest Circle Dance recently seen in Jackson, we then watched the Lighting of the Teepees installation illuminate at dusk, standing as visual reminders of unity and collaboration.

Snow King Chairs

Location: Cache Street, Snow King Mountain, Downtown Jackson Installation Date: Spring 2023

Over 30 local businesses and organizations provided support for the Square to Summit project, a public art partnership between Snow King Resort, JH Chamber of Commerce, Town of Jackson, and JH Public Art.

Twenty-five salvaged Snow King Summit lift chairs were repurposed as colorful benches and swings to form a walking corridor from downtown Jackson to the Snow King summit. This project celebrates Jackson’s unique cultural identity, history, and people by elevating local ski culture, its heritage, and our landscape. The installations provide a place to be outdoors, relax, connect, and discover the history of Snow King Mountain. Signage at each installation celebrates this history, with interpretive support from the JH Historical Museum & Society, as well as recognizes businesses that have contributed funds to the project.

At the Center for the Arts Lawn, five Electric Dandelions rose 25 feet above the landscape. Created by Liquid PXL, a Los Angeles art collective, the sculpture used LED lights to cascade twinkling colors high above the ground.

Advice for erecting a new barn

After seasons of curing there comes time for a new barn

if evening storms seep through split boards, and the roof could pull clean off.

Don’t in haste send the old to the burnpile.

Piece by piece accept the good. Claim the bones that had you fall in love. What we hope for is a better barn. But not one without influence or the stirring ache of memory.

Poetry Box

Artist: John Frechette

Curated by: Matt Daly

Location: East Broadway in front of Persephone Bakery

Date: 2010 - present

Production: Jackson Hole Writers & JH Public Art

Sponsors: MADE, Mountain Dandy

The Poetry Box places poetry into the hands of passersby by enticing them with its whimsical design to reach into the box and take a free poem with them as they go about their daily business.

“A beautiful aspect of the process was how much our students enjoyed being part of something so much larger than themselves. Murals take the emphasis off the individual artist. It becomes “ours” and about what we can accomplish collectively. Students would come in each day looking forward to see what had been painted by other students and they were excited to see what new part of the mural they would get to paint.”

Adrienne Vetter, K-12 Art Teacher

“Being chosen to be an artist for WildWalls was transformative for me! I had never created a piece of art for our community like this before, and I was incredibly inspired by the Pollinators theme, from both an environmental and a sacred place. The JH Public Art team was attentive and supported throughout the process. As an artist, it helped me to create a vision for a whole new body of work!”

Lyndsay Rowan, artist

“Thank YOU for all that you support, inspire and cultivate to ensure public art is a meaningful part of our community, AND the entirety of our community is considered and represented in creative expression and engagement! I wholeheartedly believe public art is a critical and dynamic way to democratize creativity and place making, and deeply appreciate the work of JH Public Art.”

“It makes me feel like I am in a different world. It is like a portal where everything is upside down and when you exit out the black door you’re in a different dimension.”

JH Public Art Community Artists work across existing agencies and programs including conservation, physical and behavioral health, transportation, pedestrian safety, environmental sustainability, and civic planning. Our Community Artists facilitate arts-based experiences to gather people, teach them arts skills, and to offer a sense of belonging

as an antidote to those who feel isolated and unheard. Artists interact with community at events like the People’s Market, and in parks and neighborhoods to reach diverse groups, underserved populations, and broad swaths of our community. This we know: the act of collective artmaking generates feelings of self worth, happiness, and productivity.

Pathways Murals

Artist: Colleen Friday

Educator: Adrienne Vetter

Title: Yeneini3i’ 3o3outei’i | Four Hills of Life

The four foot by 80-foot mural was created by Wind River artist Colleen Friday, in collaboration with educator Adrienne Vetter and 5th and 7th grade student artists of Fremont

County School District #38. The mural represents the Arapaho lifeway of four hills of life (yeneini3i’ 3o3outei’i) and is visually divided into four 20-foot sections that reflect Northern Arapaho culture with seasonal and life ways as interdependent to the buffalo. In mythical time, buffalo were human persons and a source of knowledge about the natural world and our movements through it.

Climbable Touchable Art

Bison and Wallow

Artist: Ben Roth

Project Administration: JH Public Art

Location: Greenspace on the Block

Funded by: JH Land Trust

Ben Roth used a chainsaw, grinder, and impact driver to create a sculpture from 30 logs, both fir and pine trees harvested as part of planned fire mitigation. The sculpture is sited on a highly visible portion of the Greenspace near a pathway that welcomes local and tourist traffic. Roth worked with local youth from Coombs Outdoors and Jackson Hole Children’s Museum to conceptualize the interactive artwork. He worked on the sculpture from June to July, often fielding questions from people passing through the Greenspace.

Abuzz

Conceptual Design and Coordination: Suzanne Morlock

Artists: Community Entry Services Clients

Location: Center for the Arts

Sponsors: Center for the Arts, Jackson Hole Public Art

Abuzz is the culmination of a 12-week exploration of “the hive,” pollinators and creative art making. The investigation included field trips to – the public art site, Sage Living pollinator gardens, Pneuhaus’ Compound Camera, the WildWalls scavenger hunt and a wildflower seed giveaway at the People’s Market in collaboration with Jackson Hole Public Art and High Mountain Pollinators and Bees.

Butterfly and Caterpillar

Artist: Bland Hoke

Project Administration: JH Public Art

Location: Children’s Learning Center, Mercill Ave.

Funded by: Head Start grant

Two new climbable sculptures by artist Bland Hoke landed in play spaces at Children’s Learning Center (CLC) on Mercill Avenue in Jackson. The sculptures, a caterpillar for the youngest children and a butterfly for older children, together represent metamorphosis – a theme that aligns with how quickly children grow. The caterpillar sculpture is based on a spicebush swallowtail caterpillar with pronounced eyes. It is powder coated in Supergrip Yellow. The butterfly is colored Mermaid Candy, with an iridescent sparkle, and is 24 inches tall and mounted to a foundation.
