Design and Technical Statement The project is for a metal working centre of excellence based in Coleford. The centre will welcome members of the public, as well as those looking for an apprenticeship. The educational aspect of the centre will be divided into two parts, the public aspect, and the formal study. The public aspect will involve a street facing cafe, and a publicly viewable forge from the cafe space. The public forge will be accessible to members of the public through paid-for activity sessions. This will aim to teach people the basics of metal working and provide a fun day out in Coleford.

Those who don’t feel like getting involved but still want to watch the process happen can view it from the mezzanine level attached to the cafe.

The second aspect of the education in the facility will be the apprenticeship. Those wishing to study will be able to access everything past the initial courtyard space.

There is a non-practical teaching space as well as three metal working spaces. These consist of a machinist area, foundry, and forge. These spaces will be involved in actual commissions and so there is a large capacity provided.

Looking towards the public aspects of the development, the lecture space will double as a learning space for those members of the public, and the industry as a whole, who want to learn the latest metal working techniques.

The other public aspect of the development is the sculpture park, which leads people through into the public courtyard. This park provides another element to showcase the processes within the building, as well as a way to draw people into the site.

Exploring the processes within the metalworking spaces, the first part to look at is the private courtyard. This space provides a large outdoor area that links all of the metalworking areas together. Through a series of gantry systems, heavy parts can be moved around the different areas easily. As long as each element fits within a 4x4x4m space, it can fit in any of the spaces and be moved to the exporting area next to the sculptural park.

The machinist area of the development is filled with various machines, such as CNC milling machines, and water jet cutters.

Here, sheet metals as well as blocks of metals can be shaped according to a CAD software. The benefit of this is the level of accuracy that can be achieved with these machines.

The foundry space is dedicated to the tooling of moulds, and casting of molten metals.

This space is more controlled than the others

and so materials moving between this space and the others would be managed. The benefit of this process is that once a mould is made, the element can be cast multiple times with similar levels of quality. This would enable the quick mass production of elements for use in sculptural works.

The forge is where all the materials from the other areas cumulate for use. Overlooked by the design office, the space provides 1:1 planning areas, as well as various tools, anvils, and forges. This will be where the most time for an apprentice will be spent.

They will conduct commissioned works here with professionals from the industry and gain their skills of metal working. This area is also a space for experimentation, such as the incorporation of digital modelling and 3D printing into the process.

The technical side of the project stems from the concept taken from the casting process.

The project has been heavily influenced by the idea of the positive and the negative.

Taking the existing conditions as the mould, the building has formed around the site and existing police station. The courtyards are remnants of the space left behind by the existing police station.

ent parts of the day. To mitigate this, fixed and movable solar mitigation elements are used throughout the development. The fixed mitigation is used on the areas that only receive sun during certain aspects of the day.

The areas this is used in also help to pull people into the building through the art of the reveal. This means that glimpses of the internal are allowed to be visible to the outside to attract people into the site. Once inside, the full impression of the building is given. Like de-moulding a metal element, you are only able to see aspects until this is removed.

The movable mitigation is used on the purely south facing windows of the development and provide ongoing shade from the sun at different points of the year. These elements are automatic ad so move with the sun, requiring little input from the occupier.

Moving onto the structure of the building, it is steel framed with strip foundations and floating slabs. The areas of the building that are below the ground are lines with warm concrete retaining walls. This allows for the concrete to be visible within the spaces and to show the structure of the building honestly.

The framing consists of steel box sections connected by pre-fabricated braced junction elements that allow the steels to slot into them. They are then welded into place to give the impression of the frame being a single cast element. The iridescence from the welding is then left visible with the use of clear intumescent paint to protect the frame from fire damage.

The environmental approach of the building is to use predominantly mechanical ventilation, due to the heat generated by the processes within the building. This heat is then recycled for use in the areas of the building that are unheated, as well as being utilised by the residential areas around the development.

The lighting within the scheme relies on large amounts of northern light to allow for comfortable working environments for both the admin workers, and metalworking professionals. Despite this there are some windows that are south facing, or catch the sun at differ3

Slopes are non-compliant with part M as they rise above 500mm for a 1:20 slope (Part M. 2015) (although the required slope gradient has been followed). This is due to the natural slope of the site and it being impractical to follow the regulations in this case.

Public Forge Wall Detail 1:10

This detail shows the retaining walls to the public forge (and the other industrial spaces in the building). Wherever a column rests on the wall above it, an imprint of the column will run to the floor. This gives the impression that the column continues from floor to ceiling. Service ducting will then line this indent to emphasise it and provide a convenient location without disturbing the aesthetic.

The studies above show the minimum angle the solar shading can be at during these points in the day.

At all other points in the day, the shading can return to a 90 degree position to allow for clear views out.

Cladding 1:2 Elevation Detail

This detail of the horseshoe cladding/ fixed solar shading shows the interlocking pattern of the horseshoe shapes. This was chosen to incorporate a superstition within the fabric of the building and to reflect the culture of the industry. Rather than the cladding having a purely aesthetic purpose, it provides solar shading to windows that receive sunlight at specific points in the day.

Floating slab allows for the ground to be load baring and help with the structural load of the heavy machinery in the industrial spaces.

The aim of this structural solution is to create a frame that reflects the casting process. By using a prefabricated junction that allows the steels to slot into it, the frame can appear as one ‘cast’ piece without fixings.

The welding of the junctions will create an iridescence that alludes to the method of construction without making it obvious. If fixings were used, this aesthetic would be broken.

Clear intumescent paint will allow for the iridescence to show through the fire protective coating. This will also protect the frame from corrosion and eventual weakening.

Environmental Strategy Ventilation & Heating

During the warmer months of the year, the heat generated within the building will be removed through mechanical ventilation. This heat will then be used to provide warm water to the entire building and surrounding residential areas. The student accommodation in the building is the only area where passive ventilation through windows will be relied

upon. The windows along Gloucester Road will also open to allow for purge ventilation in the case of the forge becoming too warm for the public. Cold air will then be provided through separate cooling ventilation ducts to help maintain an appropriate temperature.

During the colder months, the heat produced in the building will be recycled and used to heat the non-industrial spaces of the building. Any surplus heat will then be used to provide warm water to the building and surrounding residential areas. Some cooling will be needed through the cooling ducts in the industrial spaces, but the remainder of the

building will mostly require heating. The cooling will also mitigate some solar gain from the lower angle of the sun.

Maximum and minimum sun paths

During the summer solstice the sun is at its highest in the sky. This makes the risk of solar gain from above greater. To mitigate this, the roof lights in the building have been angled as northern as they can be. This means that they will provide the internal spaces with indirect northern light, preventing glare from affecting the activities

within. The other solar mitigation techniques in the building come from the fixed and movable shading. Detailed earlier, the movable shading follows the sun with a hydraulic mechanism, maintaining a comfortable internal environment at all times. The fixed shading prevents the solar gain from specific points in the day.

Summer Solstice (Maximum Sun Angle) 22

The winter solstice is when the sun is at its minimum angle. The solar gain comes from a more horizontal direction. This is mitigated by the slope of the roofs, preventing southern light penetrating the roof lights whilst allowing in northern light. In the same way as the summer solstice, the other solar shading techniques are designed to work all

year round. The movable shading in particular tracks the sun automatically, shading the internal spaces.

Acoustics

Sound dampening plasterboard

The acoustics challenges with the building stem mostly from the use of steel throughout and the noisy activities within. The steel elements will reflect the sound multiple times creating an uncomfortable environment.

The method used to mitigate against this is the use of sound dampening plasterboard where possible. This will reduce the reflections of

sound, helping to absorb some of the noise produced. Due to the nature of the materials used and the activities in the building, this is the most mitigation that can occur in this industrial setting.

Waste metals and discarded projects are recycled by being processed by the foundry. The metals are sorted, melted down, and cast into small blocks for use in the machinist and forge spaces.

Transport Delivery route into the site

Once stopped, the vehicle can be loaded and unloaded from the loading area. Once completed, the vehicle can drive forward to the junction and turn right or left.

Once the vehicle is parked, it waits until the road alongside is completely clear. The vehicle then reverses and manoeuvres around the corner into the site.

The vehicle approaches the site and prepares to park in the waiting area.
