Introduction The brief has tasked me with providing a guild within Coleford, using the principles of the ‘Journeyman’.

A guild is defined as; “An association of people for mutual aid or the pursuit of a common goal”. (Oxforddictionaries. 2019).

The Journeyman is defined as; “A trained worker who is employed by someone else”. (Oxforddictionaries. 2019).

The journeyman would be a position within the guild that would be achieved after traveling (journeyman years) and training. They would then proceed to become a master through completion of a masterpiece (Wikipedia. 2019).

The aim was to provide a way of passing down knowledge from master to apprentice, as well as providing practical experience of professional work. Using this approach in Coleford would help to alleviate some of the education issues with the area, whilst reconnecting the town with its heritage of craft.

Coleford is a town based within the Forest of Dean. It is situated to the east of the Welsh border and has a rich history of working with metal. This is evident in the designated heritage assets within the area, such as Whitecliff Ironworks. In more recent times, this craft has become a museum activity, rather than an active one. The proposed implementation into Coleford will help to remedy this as it will make the craft an active part of the town again.

Coleford Context

(Basemap derived from Digimap. 2019) Surrounded by the Forest of Dean, Coleford is a small town with a population approaching 8500. A large expansion is also due in the next decade, taking it over 10000 (Colefordtown. 2019). This will put a strain on all services as well as the need for employment. Currently, it is home to a small amount of local employment, leaving many to travel to the neighbouring built up areas, such as Gloucester.

Education in the area is also under strain, as the local college has moved to neighbouring Cinderford. This means that the provision within the area does not cater for above GCSE level. There is also a lack of apprenticeship opportunities as there is a lack of professional craft.

Transport in Coleford involves the use of mainly a car or bus. There are no other forms of public transport, and there is a strong lack of cycling provision. There are 4 bus

routes leading from the town centre linking to the neighbouring urban areas. These are very infrequent, making transport to and from Coleford difficult.

Tourism in Coleford hinges mostly around its heritage assets, as well as the Forest of Dean. There are also events that take place in the town centre during the year, such as the music festival. This makes tourism a major aspect of the local economy and incredi-

bly important for the future of the town.

The demographics of the town are concentrated in the over 45 age bracket (Coleford NDP. 2019). With an aging population, there is a missing generation of young people that leave for areas with more opportunities. This means that there is an unsustainable population living in Coleford and more needs to be done to retain younger people.

The size of Coleford after 1890 (and presumably a long time before) remained mostly unchanged until the residential expansions built between 1950 and 1970. This expansion will have put increased pressure on the infrastructure of such a small town. The decline of the mining industries across the UK will have also had an adverse affect on the economic viability of Coleford to the present day.

Industry in the town has always been based around products from the ground. These were predominantly iron, coal, and ochre. The mining of this was often conducted by members of the free miners. Free miners were (and still are) a group with entitlement to mine in pieces of land called ‘gales’ (Clearwell Caves. 2019). This entitlement made them key in the early economy of Coleford as they had the right to extract the minerals from the ground to export to other parts of the country.

Architecturally, the predominant style in the centre of the town is Georgian. This shows a renewed interest in the town during this time and lines up with the chronology of the Mushet enterprises into the local area.

Shallow depressions could be sites where scowles have been backfilled, or they could represent subsidence of the ground surface above old mines or natural caves. Small pits with mounds of spoil associated with them probably represent different types of iron ore extraction in the vicinity of the exposed cave system, or people prospecting for iron ore away from the main deposits. Small circular pits without associated Whitecliff Ironworksmounds might represent natural geological (Obscurasky.

2011) features. Further research into what the different forms of scowle represent is needed.

Exploitation of iron ore Dating evidence for when exactly iron ore was exploited from scowles is rare. An early 1800’s iron working furnace for the Forest of Dean. After multiple partnerships, and unsatisfactory results, the endeavour eventually failed with a lot of lost investment (forestofdeanhistory. 2019).

A working mining museum dedicated to showing the mining efforts that have taken place over the centuries. Mining has occurred in the caves since before the Roman occupation and has been heavily exploited (Clearwell Caves.

2019).

Iron and steel works owned by David, and later, Robert Mushet. This was the location for experimental iron and steel working with advances in the industry, such as the first steel rail production for the railway (Historic England. 2019).

Education

Employment

The lack of younger members of the population will cause a population fall in the future.

If this isn’t mitigated, Coleford could become financially, and socially, unviable.

Changes in the opportunities for younger members of the town will have to happen to encourage retention of those below the age of 45.

On average, Coleford is much less educated compared to those in Gloucestershire and England. This will cause issues that impact employment as the job market receives an over supply of unskilled labour. The economy within Coleford will suffer, further exacerbating the demographic issues.

Coleford has a job market that relies on part-time work much more than England on average. This kind of unstable work will further drive away under 45s as the financial necessity to work full time will push them out.

Connectivity Looking at the connectivity of Coleford, it is clear that the Car provides the best method of transport. In 10 minutes it is possible to reach every part of the parish by car. In contrast, the public transport available is restricted to limited bus services only. This further impacts the younger population as they are more likely to rely on public transport.

The lack of connectivity makes Coleford fairly disconnected from other settlements. This means that any development has to take this into account and provide accommodation on site.

Connecting to the west of Coleford also provides a problem, as pedestrian routes and public transport are non existent. This means some of the important heritage assets are out of reach of those visiting the town. This would adversely affect the tourism in the area.

Metalworking in the UK and the Welsh Border Metalworking in the UK takes many forms but hinges around three categories; - Machining The working of metal with the use of machines, such as a CNC. Often computer aided, it allows for extremely precise fabrication of metal elements.

- Casting The melting down of metal into a fluid, and pouring into a mould. These moulds can either be tooled, temperature resistant materials, or sand based. Once poured, the metal solidifies into the shape desired. The piece can then be demoulded (and sometimes reused depending on the type).

- Forging The heating and reshaping of hot metal. This is done with the help of tools such as an anvil, hammer, and forge. The metal is first heated, then taken to the anvil and drawn out by use of a hammer. A power hammer can help to speed the process up but the repeated impact of the metal helps to shape it. It will then be sanded and treated to the specified requirements.

Using the British Artist Blacksmiths Association (BABA) list of blacksmith education facilities, It is possible to show the concentration of metalworking in the UK. Looking at the distribution, the concentration spots are around the south and west of England. There is a noticeable lack of educational facilities in Wales and shows an opportunity in the Coleford area to attempt to bridge the gap.

Taking a closer look at the region around Coleford, more detail is possible to plot.

The yellow dots show the educational facilities like the previous map, whereas the blue dots show BABA blacksmith members. This shows the concentration of all BABA facilities in the west of the UK. The red dot shows the location of Coleford and places it in the middle of the large western concentration.

This makes Coleford perfectly placed for an educational centre and professional facility.

Using the already well established facilities in the region, the new facility could be networked into the rest of the region to improve its viability.

The region is well connected in terms of the facilities available but lacks any central form of experimentation. The industry relies on being furthered by individual blacksmiths and knowledge sharing is limited. A new central facility could provide a centre of excellence and help to push forward new techniques that could then be shared.

Use of different forms of metalworking in one facility will also help to improve the experimentation and educational capabilities of the centre.

The opportunities within reach of Coleford itself currently are limited. This means that any person looking to get into an apprenticeship role or college level course in metalworking would need to travel to Hereford.

This is 22 miles away, which would take 40 minutes by car. Bringing a facility like this into Coleford would mean that there is a route to further education in a specialised role within Coleford again. This would help to alleviate some of the employment woes in the town and reconnect the current population with the towns heritage.

Brief & Response Overarching Project Brief “You are asked to develop a mixed typology building of two interconnected programmes.

Firstly, a Guild of Master Craftsmen School and secondly a programme of your choice, driven by research”. (Hills, S. 2018)

Metal Working and Blacksmithery “Metalworking is the process of working with metals to create individual parts, assemblies, or large-scale structures.” (Wikipedia. 2018) “A blacksmith is a metalsmith who creates objects from wrought iron or steel by forging the metal, using tools to hammer, bend, and cut (cf. whitesmith). Blacksmiths produce objects such as gates, grilles, railings, light fixtures, furniture, sculpture, tools, agricultural implements, decorative and religious items, cooking utensils and weapons.” (Wikipedia. 2018) The aim of this project is to produce a proposal for the Coleford site based around metal working and blacksmithery to satisfy the building requirements of “firstly, a Guild of Master Craftsmen School and secondly a programme of your choice”. The idea behind this particular industry is the realisation that today’s Coleford has more in common with metal work than with industries based on the forest (despite its contradictory geographical location). This long history of metal work spans back to pre-medieval iron works, smelting the local iron ore. Within the town of Coleford itself, the earliest mention of metalwork was the fact that there was a furnace next to the chapel in 1539 (Baggs, A and Jurica, A. 1996).

The predominant functions of the building will be; - An educational space (apprenticeship etc.)

- Start up workshop - Professional Workshops - Public interaction with the process Bringing this craft back to Coleford will help to fill the education gap, as well as provide an important source of employment and training.

Coleford Material Study General Materials

Reflecting on the analysis of the Lisbon trip, the material studies were very useful.

Taking this forward, I conducted two similar studies within Coleford to catalogue the materials.

Looking at the material junctions around the centre of Coleford, it is clear that masonry and stone are the predominant materials. This is especially true of the more traditional elements of the town. The colours of the materials are muted and give an aged aesthetic.

Painted elements are also prevalent around the town and take the form of various colours, ranging from muted to vibrant. This use of paint is often to highlight elements such as shop fronts, windows, and doors.

Metals Study

The next material study was focused on the metals around the town. The sample collected includes examples of lamp posts, fencing, outdoor furniture, and signage.

The most prominent feature of all the samples is the level of decay of the materials. Very few elements were without some form of deterioration, reinforcing the aged aesthetic of the town.

Similarly to the general material study, some of the metal samples were painted. As well as an attempt to prevent corrosion, the painted metals are used to highlight certain elements.

The Site The site for the proposal is to the east of the town centre, on the major crossroad between the B4228 and Gloucester Road. Currently on the site there is the Police Constabulary for Gloucestershire. For the sake of the project, this building is assumed disused and will be demolished to make way for the proposal.

The topography of the site is elevated towards the north and east and slopes downward to the level of the roads in the south and west.

Bordering the site is a line of shop frontages and residential buildings along Gloucester road, and civic uses along the B4228. There is also a restaurant, Coleford town council, and the Co-op shop just off the B4228.

The site is well positioned to access the public transport routes in the town and so would have to reinforce their use (and perhaps investment).

The eastern boundaries to the site are lined by residential uses and so would require a particular consideration in regards to building height and noise.

Building Typologies and Scale Tests

(Base aerial from Digimap. 2019) The building typologies within the proposal will involve mostly industrial aesthetics.

Despite this, there will also be a cafe, lecture space, accommodation, and admin office.

These will also follow a similar industrial style. Using scale testing, different developments with aspects of the proposal can be tested against the site.

Horizon Forge

A small, single person forge based in Llanbradach, Wales. The footprint of the building fits anywhere on the site. It shows that a space with all the equipment for a single blacksmith fits comfortably on the site.

A multi-person forge based outside of Hereford. The footprint of this forge is less certain as it exists on a farm. Every building displayed doesn’t necessarily facilitate metalworking. The main building of the forge fits within the site but it would be necessary to scale back the size of it. This means the size of the forges for the proposal would need to be sized between the two examples.

Based in Thailand, this restaurant has a publicly viewable kitchen showing the processes involved in creating the chocolate desserts.

The whole restaurant fits comfortably within the site and so logically, a smaller facility such as a cafe would also fit.

This restaurant is based in Denmark and focuses around transparency. This test was conducted because the restaurant shares some of the characteristics with the proposal and provides a useful scale test. The development, with some manipulation, would fit the site. This further shows that a cafe would easily fit the site.

The factory is a large industrial building with administration and full car manufacture facilities. This scale test was conducted as it shares some of the spaces the proposal does, but on a far larger scale. The footprint of the development dwarfs the site and shows that such a large and complex manufacturing facility is inappropriate for the site. Despite this, it demonstrates the scale that would work with the site.

Our services are versatile and flexible, working with a variety of requests from bay curtain poles, gates, railings and fire baskets to individual sculptures� (Horizon Forge. 2019)

Floor Plan

This independent blacksmith forge is based in Llanbradach, Wales. It has dealt with commissions from clients such as the organisation managing the Big Pit. The floorplan of the forge consists of a single large space with a mezzanine level towards the back.

Examples of the blacksmith’s work The materials of the forge were coursed stone walls with a corrugated steel roof. This gives a fairly standard (if dated) industrial aesthetic focused around function over form.

Issues with the space focused around three points. First, the lighting was entirely artificial. Second, the heating of the space came solely from a wood burner. Third, the space lacked organisation, causing trip hazards and lack of space. If these issues were remedied, it would make a much more comfortable space to work in. Taking this forward, the final proposal will create a forge that is properly heated, lit with northern light, and has clear organised areas.

Exploring the Making Process & Artifact

Using VR, I modelled the head of a stag as a representation of the forest. The idea behind using VR to make the sculpture was to experiment with a modelling process that could be used in a professional metalworking environment.

Using a 3D printer, a positive of the model was created. Using this model, plaster of paris was used to cast around the positive, creative a negative mould. This attempt failed as the printed model was unable to separate from the mould, breaking it.

After modelling a negative mould of the model, this was then printed out. It was designed as a split mould to make it easier to separate the mould from the cast. Using a fire, tin was melted in a steel bowl and poured into the cast. Unfortunately, despite the plastic of the mould being printed at above the melting point of tin, the molten tin melted the mould and spilled out onto the floor. On contact with the concrete, the

molten metal sprayed into the air due to the moisture in the concrete. Future casting was done on a base of sand to prevent this occurring again.

Using a gas stove, tin was melted down again and poured into a plastic positive. It was placed into the sand to use the principles of lost casting. The aim was for the plastic to vaporise, leaving the casted element behind.

This did not happen and the outer wall of the positive remained, creating a cast of the inside of the model. Despite this not being the result desired, it lead to the approach for the final attempt and the final artifact.

The model was expanded to create a negative of the design. This was then 3d printed and embedded into the sand in a similar way to the last attempt. Melting the tin down, this was then poured into the new mould. The metal then solidified and the cast could be removed from the sand. The plastic surrounding the cast metal needed to then be removed, so it was put into a glass of boiling water.

Using the heat, the plastic was then peeled

away. This revealed the final result and the artifact created by the process. Comparing the final result with the digital model, it created a good physical representation of it.

The issue with the process though was that all the detail of the original model was last due to the temperature of the metal. This created a very smooth result with the overall shape of the model. Going forward, the process could be further refined by melting the metal in a more temperature controlled way, as well as using a material in the mould that

can withstand the heat. This would preserve the surface details, creating a far more accurate model.

This experimentation helped to get an appreciation of the process of casting, and one of the three methods of metal working. It has informed the final proposal and helped to bring forward more modern methods of design into the metalworking process (such as VR).

Positive & Negative

Based on metal casting, The solid elements of the building are the ‘mould’ that shapes the activities and spaces within. Reflecting the methods of casting, where a solid element moulds a fluid element into a shape. Positivity and negativity will be present in all outputs for the building, as the metalworking methods of casting, forging, and machining

will involve the manipulation of a metal (the positive) and the elements that help to form it (the negative).

Art of the reveal

Art of the reveal will be the approach taken for the internal spaces of the building, where only by engaging with the building, does the occupant experience the spaces. The threshold will be key as the reveal will be

at this point. The approach will replicate the experience of revealing a cast element.

The item is hidden inside and is only revealed once the mould is removed around it.

Whilst in the mould, glimpses of the metal where it was poured would be visible. Taking this into the project, the internal spaces of the development will allow small glimpses of the activities within (the positive).

Examples of the positive and negative approach come from Rachel Whiteread, and Luigi Moretti. Both solidified empty space to capture what is usually invisible. This flipping of the solid and void is what has guided the form of the building.

To make a proposal that has a foundation in the metal working industry, it needs to reflect the culture built over time. In the proposal, this will manifest in the reflections of the superstitions of the past. There are two main superstitions involved in metalworking.

The first superstition is to do with the horse shoe. Traditionally, hanging the shoe on the wall in a U shape would allow for the luck to build up for the place it presided in. In the case of the forge, the opposite is true. the luck will pour into the forge, improving the work produced.

The second superstition involved the use of an knife below a door mat. This was believed to prevent witches from crossing the threshold.

Internal Spaces

Using this approach in the proposal would allow for a much more comfortable working environment.

Cladding The large metal cladding panels provide a clean, unadorned facade and silhouette. They create a single large form, directing attention to the activities within the building.

The contrast between the galvanised steel stairways and the white cladding is similar to the casting process. Using the white cladding as the Next mould, the galvanised steel proproject  vides the glimpses of the casted element that I am trying to capture in the1/2project.

Solar Mitigation

The form of the building follows the footprints of the existing buildings on the site.

The buildings were demolished and the footprints were turned into courtyards. This positive and negative approach is something that is included in the final proposal. Similar to this project, there are currently buildings on the Coleford site.

The hotel uses a hydraulic based system to pivot large louvred panels. This allows the solar mitigation to follow the movement of the sun, maintaining the internal environment. Using this approach in the project would allow for a method of solar mitigation that follows the aesthetic of a metalworking industrial building and is adaptable to the different times of year.

The start-up forge provides a point in which those who have progressed from apprentices to professionals can start their business.

It allows them to use forge facilities on a rental basis. This provides a cheap way to start up their business whilst they build up funds to have their own place of work.

An apprenticeship scheme would provide students practical experience in machinist, forge, and foundry spaces. They will be provided with the opportunity to live on-site if they live outside the commutable distance. The metalworking spaces also provide the ability to work on live projects, as they work side by side with professionals from the industry.

Members of the public and industry can attend after-hours lectures from guest professionals. This will allow for the sharing of knowledge in the industry and help to move it forward.

The design office is the place where CAD can be utilised within projects as well as 3D printing. The space also provides three-dimensional digital modelling facilities through the use of VR. This allows rapid prototyping as well as the ability to 3D print those prototypes.

Structural Approach

Steel box framing with prefabricated braced junctions. The junctions allow the steel members to slot into it and they are then welded into place. This creates the appearance of a single seamless frame.

Floating slabs to spread structural loading across the ground.

Welded junctions create iridescence in the steel which is then coated with clear intumescent paint to preserve it.

Use of portal frames to create free vertical space for projects which is light and open.

Warm concrete walls to maintain a completely warm structure and display it internally.

Sculpture Park

Trees line the park to provide a green frontage to the streets, as well as an acoustic barrier from the road.

Steel strips guide people through the park and into the building, representing the knife under the door mat superstition.

Sculptures throughout the park are produced by the apprentices as a final piece to move into independent work.
