KANSAS CITY ARTISTS COALITION RIVER MARKET REGIONAL EXHIBITION Sounds of the City The theme "Sounds of the City" was selected to celebrate the 2017 designation of Kansas City as a music city by UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Artists were invited to interpret the theme; drawing on whatever musical, rhythmic, organic, staccato sound that inspired them. The River Market Regional Exhibition is KCAC’s 36th Annual Juried Competition. RMRE is unrestricted media, but limited to artists residing in Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Oklahoma, and Arkansas and to members of the Kansas City Artists Coalition.
SARALYN REECE HARDY: JUROR Essay
Artists are industrious. Driven by personal and contextual motivations, they work throughout their lives to press insights, objections and vivid queries through the seams of human inattention, anxiety or numbness. If fortune smiles on the active perceiver, we are up for the perceptual challenge of seeing a new creative work because our assumptions are ready for disruption. If we allow for the pleasures of wondering, perceptual habits must recede or resist. We are invited to shed a rigid perspective on the world. The artist Grayson Perry helps us consider how to travel into art and life with his suggestion-- “carry your beliefs lightly.”
Saralyn Reece Hardy has led the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas since 2005. Prior to her arrival at the Spencer, Hardy served as director of Museums and Visual Arts at the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and director of the Salina Art Center in Salina, Kansas. Under her leadership, the Spencer has expanded academic programs funded by a Mellon Challenge Grant, established the International Artist-inResidence program and entered into The Commons, a partnership with the Biodiversity Institute and the Hall Center for the Humanities at the University of Kansas.
The industrious life of an artist is often overlooked when we experience their finished work. It is that work ethic that I admire most—hours in the studio, research trips to archives, experimentation in labs and on the ground, fixing the restless body in front of a page, surface or screen, or in some cases engaging in constant dialogue with communities. I chose several works that demonstrated a sense of rigorous questioning, so much so that my own questions emerged. I hope that the installations, images and objects that convene in the gallery function for you as a prompt for your own personal debates, giving equal weight to modest daily choices, quirky scratch-your-head humor, life-altering revelations, and then pausing with respect when the unanswerable mortal awareness enters the room. I was inspired by Ruben Castillo’s Can
Dishwashing be Queer to share the questions that flickered through my consciousness while jurying: Is suspense required to feel pleasure and fear? When does pleasure become ritual or art? Why must we imagine other worlds? How does a mundane task free the mind for understanding? Why does a drawing feel more intimate than a screen? Do musical instruments conspire as potent objects of race and gender? How fast does the wheel of time turn when it rusts? Where does art go when the people are gone? The Kansas City Artist Coalition exhibition does not require coherence of theme, media or style, offering Kansas City communities the opportunity to experience what is top of mind and encouraging artists to tangle with all nature of questions. I especially appreciate the elevations of those questions continuing without too much attitude, the sly disregard of high and low. My grateful thanks to the staff, board and volunteers of the KCAC, especially Marissa Starke and most of all my long and admiring respect for Janet Simpson, the stalwart soul at the center of it all. SNAP SPACE – JUSTIN BORDER explores visual storytelling. Through the combination of human figures, elements taken from collaged studies and preliminary drawings and an organic texture that mimics topography, an overall dreamlike atmosphere is constructed. Each piece has a narrative, a sense of reminiscing or of folklore. The story lives somewhere between the conscious and subconscious, within their own imaginary realm that we create when viewing them. Process, collecting, re-purposing materials and research are important factors within his working style and Border finds himself following many of the same patterns when approaching a new work.
