Jewish Family Service of Colorado

Mission

Founded in 1872, Jewish Family Service of Colorado (JFS) is a nonsectarian, nonprofit human services agency serving metro Denver and Boulder, helping seniors age in place, providing mental health counseling to individuals and families in distress, offering training and placement services to those with barriers to employment, and providing crisis intervention and food to people in need. Every year, JFS benefits more than 21,000 people of all ages, faiths, and incomes.

To restore well-being to the vulnerable throughout the greater Denver community by delivering services based on Jewish values. Values Jewish Family Service of Colorado is guided by these Jewish values: • He who saves one life, saves the entire world. Pikuach Nefesh • The obligation to make the world a better place. Tikkun Olam • Social justice, the obligation to act justly toward people in need. Tzedakah • Acts of loving kindness. G’mut Hassadim • Every human being is equal in the eyes of G-d. Tselem Elohim Staff: 171 2011 Volunteers: 629

Dear Friends, Every day, the staff and volunteers of Jewish Family Service (JFS) see the faces of children, adults, and seniors who come through our doors for assistance. We know their names, their stories, and how we improve their lives. In 2011, we helped more than 21,000 people, but there are countless others—thousands of additional faces— we don’t see and who are better off because of our work. When the clients we serve experience the power of human kindness, they frequently go on to help others in the future. It might be sharing a lesson learned, helping a friend through hardship, or giving a meal to someone in need. We call it the chain reaction of good. We know that the entire JFS family—our staff, board, volunteers, donors, clients, and friends—are part of this amazing force of good that can transform lives and yes, even change the world. We don’t work alone and couldn’t be successful if we did. Providing human services requires collaboration with others. Our impact is immeasurably strengthened by the many partner organizations that walk side by side with us and share our mission. Working with other organizations allows us to provide stronger services and reach more people. In our 2011 Annual Report, we’ve highlighted these partnerships to demonstrate their ability to create meaningful change in our community. By working together and bringing our respective strengths to bear, we are transforming lives. Some partnerships go back decades, such as our long-term relationships with Allied Jewish Federation of Colorado and Mile High United Way. Others are newly formed and are bringing new and innovative solutions to our work. Our partnership with the Denver/Boulder Better Business Bureau is moving people with employment challenges from welfare to work. We are partnering with communities like the City of Edgewater to bring community and purpose to the lives of its senior citizens. And we’re partnering with faith-based organizations like the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to provide volunteer support to its mission to feed the hungry and put food in the Weinberg Food Pantry. We thank you for your ongoing and loyal support of Jewish Family Service. You are an important link in the chain reaction of good that allows JFS to fulfill its mission of service to our community. B’shalom,

JFS at the JCC “Our partnership with JFS helps us provide rich social, recreational, educational, and health programming to our residents and other seniors at the JCC. We provide transportation that allows older adults to participate in day trips to visit museums, attend concerts and films, and see the mountains. Several agencies are working together to enrich the quality of life for our seniors and it’s made a big difference. We have really enjoyed being part of this collaborative project.” —Michael Klein, Executive Director, Allied Jewish Apartments

4

JFS at the JCC “JFS at the JCC is a social thing for me. We have lunch, play some cards, and enjoy each other’s company. The people are great. We’re on the same wave length and have the same wants and needs. I really enjoy the driving trips. We recently went up to Estes Park to see the trees turn and had another trip to Georgetown to take the narrow-gauge train, which I have never done. The staff helps us with all kinds of issues, like healthcare, housing, and finances. It’s great to have that support.” —Jack Fischer, 65, JFS at the JCC participant 5

JFS Senior Solutions “Jewish Family Service came to us and asked how they could help make things better for our seniors. We developed a partnership that is unique and special for Edgewater and it has helped revitalize our adult and senior populations to be more active in the community, healthier, and engaged. Together, we have been able to get our adults and seniors involved in field trips, workshops, the walking club, and other activities. A lot of it is social and we all know if you’re happy socially, you’re happy in other aspects of your life.” —Bonnie McNulty, Mayor of the City of Edgewater

6

JFS Senior Solutions “I’m legally blind and have some hearing loss. I’m trying to stay independent and in my apartment for as long as I can. It’s wonderful to have the support of JFS and city programs and all they do for me. Once a week I go to the wellness clinic to have my blood pressure and weight checked. I go to the educational workshops. And, every other week, I have a housekeeper come who runs to the grocery store for me and helps me with things I can’t see. Once a month, I get a food basket with frozen meals, fresh fruit, and vegetables. It makes my life much easier and enjoyable. These programs have helped the whole building get more involved and sociable. It’s really brightened the atmosphere.” —Betty Nethaway, 90, Resident at Edgewater Plaza Apartments

7

Disability and Employment Services “The Better Business Bureau is a neutral third-party organization that is striving to be the leader in supporting marketplace trust. We partner with Jewish Family Service by providing internships to recipients of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program. It’s a great way to contribute to the community while giving people valuable work skills and business knowledge. We benefit because our interns do valuable work around the office and sometimes interns like Heidi are hired on as employees. Helping to develop future business leaders and owners is part of our mission.” —Kevin Rooty, Intern Coordinator and Investigations Consultant, Denver/Boulder Better Business Bureau

8

Disability and Employment Services “I am 22 and a single mom of two girls. I am receiving TANF assistance and going to Community College of Denver fulltime as a business major. When I signed up for TANF, they connected me with SHALOM Denver, which helped me get an internship at the Better Business Bureau. It was a great experience and taught me how to be a problem solver and gave me some excellent work skills. A few months later, I was hired parttime at BBB. It’s a challenge and I like being challenged.” —Heidi Pittaway, 22, Assistant to the

Vice President of Operations, Denver/Boulder Better Business Bureau

9

Family Safety Net Services “Jewish Family Service and the Mile High United Way share deep historical roots as community partners epitomizing what it means to Live United. We recently partnered with JFS to provide support services to senior residents at Broadway Junction. JFS has an extremely qualified and professional staff, committed volunteers, and passionate supporters who have a deep understanding of the needs in our community, and the ability to provide essential services to meet those needs. We are very proud to be a JFS partner on this and many other programs.” —Christine Benero, President and CEO, Mile High United Way

10

Family Safety Net Services “Broadway Junction is home to a population of people who face multiple challenges. Before Jewish Family Service came here, there was no support for residents struggling to stay selfsufficient. Through a community outreach program, JFS sent us a case manager, who was tremendously helpful in building a sense of community here. She helped us manage stressful relationships and situations, offering resources and referrals. JFS helped me pay my medical and utility bills when I suffered a serious financial loss. Our case manager was caring and kind—she brought people so much hope.” —Kathleen Cole, 71, resident of Broadway Junction

11

JFS Counseling Center “Teller Elementary is a growing school in Denver’s Congress Park area. This is our third year partnering with Jewish Family Service to enhance our mental health services. A JFS intern comes to our school two days a week and, working closely with our psychologist, has helped to create small groups of students who work through challenges, such as anger management, anxiety, and friendship skills. The students meet once a week with the intern to practice skills and strategies. The partnership has allowed us to provide more attention to the whole child—the academic, social, and emotional. We’re very fortunate to work with JFS to provide a valuable service to our kids.” —Jennifer Barton, Principal, Teller Elementary School

12

JFS Counseling Center “I interned at Teller Elementary during the 2009–2010 school year while I was getting my master’s in clinical counseling. It was through JFS’s KidSuccess program that I got my first experience in a school setting. I worked with students as young as four and as old as 11. It was rewarding to see children make some changes and grow toward a healthier lifestyle and learn ways to deal with their struggles. In a matter of weeks, teachers reported noticeable improvements with the children. It’s been a very rewarding experience that solidified my desire to work with children.” —Bethany Adams, 25, Children’s Counselor in Englewood

13

Volunteer Services “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints operates a full-scale cannery that provides canned foods for our Church Welfare Program and also for those poor and needy in our community. Volunteers from Jewish Family Service come here several times a year to can food for the Weinberg Food Pantry. Over the years, they’ve canned peaches, pears, pinto beans, tomato sauce, apple sauce, carrots, and strawberry jam. Our church values self-reliance on the part of individuals and families, but we also feel an obligation to help our brothers and sisters in need. Together, we’re able to benefit those who are struggling and those who want to help themselves.” —Richard Clark, Cannery Manager, Aurora Cannery, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

14

Volunteer Services “I’m Jewish and in my family, whenever we get together for special occasions, it always revolves around food. I have many fond memories of being with family and sharing meals. It bothers me when people don’t have enough to eat, so I often donate money and food to the JFS Weinberg Food Pantry. Earlier this year, I started volunteering with other people from JFS at the LDS cannery. I’ve canned pears, peaches, and beans. It’s an extremely efficient operation and the time goes by really fast. It’s a terrific partnership. If more religions worked together, we would have fewer problems in the world.” —Alisa Bourne, 38,
