Jewish Family Service of Colorado

MISSION

Improving the lives of individuals and families in need throughout Colorado by taking an integrated approach to delivering comprehensive support services.

VISION

As a leading and inclusive human services agency, JFS provides innovative programs inspiring people to achieve long-term stability and live more meaningful lives.

VALUES

Jewish Family Service exists to fulfill one of the most important Jewish values of Tikkun Olam, the obligation to make the world a better place.

In delivering our services, we are also guided by the following Jewish values: He who saves one life saves the entire world. – Pikuah Nefesh

Social justice, the obligation to act justly toward people in need. –Tzedakah

Acts of loving kindness. – G’milut Hasadim

Every human being is equal in the eyes of God. – Tselem Elohim

The act of mending the heart. – Tikkun HaLev

JFS is a nonprofit human services organization that serves anyone in need—regardless of their circumstances or religious beliefs. We believe in a shared responsibility to support impactful changes throughout our community.

Founded 152 years ago, we currently offer more than 30 programs and services, including food security, housing stability, mental health counseling, aging care, employment support, refugee resettlement, chaplaincy and Jewish life, disability services, and aeroponic farming. JFS takes a holistic approach, assessing the various needs of the individual or family and provides the appropriate services all from one organization. We continuously evaluate the evolving challenges of our community and adapt or develop programs that respond to the resulting needs.

Dear Friends,

Over our last fiscal year (July 1, 2023 – June 30, 2024), together we made our community a better place, one act of kindness, one program, one service at a time. We did this remarkable work because of the commitment of our staff, Board, volunteers, and donors. Like us, our partners hold JFS’s and our community’s best interests at the forefront of their minds so that we can make an impact every day.

Our 2024 Annual Report celebrates the powerful work we achieved last fiscal year, and we know you’ll be as proud as we are when you read the accomplishments. With your support, JFS offered food and housing security to thousands in our community, the possibility of a brighter future for youths in our school-based mental health program, and the opportunity to acquire new skills and achieve living-wage employment through our innovative vocational training program. Our collective impact is only possible thanks to dedicated supporters like you, and we are so grateful to have you by our side.

In addition to the report’s highlights, we wanted to share a few exciting happenings from the past year:

• We hosted our first Holocaust gathering for 50 survivors and 25 second- and third-generation family members to foster community, make connections, reflect, and inspire a culture of remembrance.

• We surveyed stakeholders to identify our strategic priorities so that we can ensure that JFS remains one of our community’s premier human services organizations, and our new four-year strategic framework will focus on program and data optimization and financial sustainability.

• Acquired Altius Farms, which grows leafy greens that provide nourishment to our food pantry clients, restaurants, and the community and trains and employs JFS clients.

We are honored that you have chosen to join us in our mission of improving the lives of individuals and families throughout Colorado. Thank you for your continued partnership.

As an agency, our achievements over the past year have been varied and impressive. A few of our top highlights include:

Our refugee resettlement clients who are workforceeligible have found employment on average within 88 days of arriving in Denver through the assistance of our refugee career services specialists.

We launched our new Adaptive Bike program to build active, healthy lifestyles for adult residents in Douglas, Arapahoe, and Elbert counties in the intellectual and developmental disability community.

170,955 total services provided to 22,143 clients across multiple programs.

At JFS Altius Farms, we grow more than 31,000 pounds of fresh produce each year in our 7,300 sq. ft. rooftop greenhouse, which houses 345 Tower Gardens™. Our rooftop farm provides locally and sustainably grown chemical pesticide-free produce for restaurants, local grocers, the community, and the JFS Weinberg Food Pantry for our clients.

As a nonprofit social enterprise, JFS Altius Farms trains and employs JFS clients and veterans interested in aeroponic and traditional farming and provides produce to JFS food pantries.

The farm delivers healthier food, reduces environmental impact, and elevates our local economy. We serve people and planet.

JFS Altius Farms produced and sold or donated more than 31,000 pounds of fresh produce from the greenhouse and outdoor garden.
The Weinberg Pantry received more than 420 pounds of produce from our farm in less than a year.

MINDY LEVY PECKAR AND STEVE PECKAR

Donor Spotlight

“We will continue to support JFS through our lifetime and our Legacy giving will go beyond that and help ensure that JFS continues long after we are gone.”—THE PECKARS

Partnerships play a significant role in our work and the success of the organization. Whether through grants, donations of funds, food, and supplies, or volunteering their time, partners make a lasting impact.

Mindy Levy Peckar and Steve Peckar believe in the full array of support for everyone that JFS provides, from food to mental health to job support and everything else that JFS does for children and families. And the couple’s support began years ago with Mindy and her friends.

When Mindy was in her early 20s, she and a few girls had singles parties, and they asked the attendees to bring canned goods to donate to JFS. When those parties stopped, Mindy’s connection to JFS also stopped. “I had always wanted to get more involved but didn’t pull the trigger until around 2002 when I got approved to volunteer in the Weinberg Food Pantry,” Mindy shared.

Mindy volunteered in the pantry until around 2021. Then, she got involved with what’s now the Yana Vishnitsky Refugee Resettlement program, and her sister and two friends worked with an Afghan family for about a year.

When Mindy and Steve were married in 2000, he believed in his wife’s efforts to support JFS, and over the years, the couple has donated funds to redo the lobby and made various financial contributions for events and programs, including Mindy’s most recent gift of a mushroom container for JFS Altius Farms. In addition, Mindy served on the JFS Board of Directors for nine years, and the couple is a part of the Legacy Society.

Partners like the Peckars help make JFS one of Colorado’s most impactful human service agencies. Together, we are making the greatest impact for the greater good.
