Adopt-a-Family You Make Extraordinary Things Happen

Fifty Years Ago Fifty years ago the year was 1963. The Cold War dominated international relationships; the U.S. was beginning to become more deeply involved in Vietnam; China was still “Red China,” and not the economic powerhouse it is today; the white minority in South Africa gave no rights to its black majority; and Israel was four years away from the War of 1967.

In 1963, Israeli Jews could not visit the Kotel or step foot in the West Bank (then controlled by Jordan), Gaza (then controlled by Egypt) or the Golan Heights (then controlled by Syria). There was no talk in 1963 of Jordan, Egypt or Syria giving land to the Palestinians, much less helping them obtain their own state. There was, however, plenty of talk from Arab leaders about the need for Arab armies to finish the job they failed to accomplish when they invaded Israel on May 14, 1948—the publicly expressed intention of throwing the Jews into the sea.

Fifty years later the Cold War is over, American forces are no longer in Vietnam, China is one of our largest trading partners and the black majority rules in a democratic South Africa. What has not changed is the enmity of Israel’s neighbors.

Words have meaning, and when hateful words of genocide and destruction are spoken constantly and consistently by political and religious leaders, they impact the younger generation and make peace that much harder to obtain. On December 9, 2012 Steven Erlanger, writing from Gaza, reported in The New York Times the following: “Khaled Meshal, the political leader of Hamas, gave a defiant speech on Saturday, vowing to build an Islamic Palestinian state on all the land of Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. … His voice rising to a shout, Mr. Meshal said: ‘Palestine is ours from the river to the sea and from the south to the north.’”

There is no talk of a two-state solution or of neighbors living together in peace. What we have here is the same angry demand for ethnic cleansing that Israel’s neighbors have called for, with some notable exceptions, ever since Israel came into being. It is true that the governments of Egypt and Jordan have not endorsed this position, as they do have peace treaties with Israel, but it is also true that they have not denounced these words either.

And meanwhile, in New York at United Nations headquarters, the General Assembly has rewarded the Palestinian leadership by upgrading their position to non-member observer state, thereby giving them access to the International Criminal Court, where Israel will most likely soon be convicted on the bogus charge of “war crimes.” And, one thousand miles away from Israel, the political and religious leaders of Iran endorse, defend, enhance and repeat the call of Khaled Meshal for ethnic cleansing, while rapidly moving to obtain the nuclear weapons that Hitler strived for but failed to build.

America fortunately has the military power to keep Iran from becoming a nuclear-armed country and the diplomatic clout to keep the International Criminal Court from doing damage to Israel. The key is for America to keep focused and not to drop the ball. Our jobs as American Jews here in the heartland is to raise our voices, find allies and not get tired. Too much is at stake.

One Happy Camper

Letters From Camp Dear Camp Scholarship Fund, Thank you so much for helping my parents help me be sent to camp!

Camp was amazing with help from my counselors and M.O. M.O. stands for Mahon (the oldest camp group) Ofie (which is the youngest camp group). I am the one [in the picture] with the Hebrew “banana” hat and oversized smile.

Camp is just some grass and wood with a tree-surrounded pond (lake) and the outside, but a loving, kind, forgiving, friend-filled place on the inside.

I’ll be entering the talent-show-athon for as long as, well, forever! Camp is not a one-time thing, but is a never-forgotten-moment(s) thing.

Maya Dear Camp Scholarship Fund, Thank you for helping me go to camp this year. This is a picture of me and my cabinmates after the Ga-Ga Tournament. The thing in my hands is the trophy! I won the Ga-Ga Tournament! So, Ga-Ga is a game where if a ball touches you below your knees, you’re out.

I was one of the final two against an eighth grader. Then, a miraculous thing happened. I hit the ball through my legs and he slipped! The ball hit his feet, and I won! It was awesome!

Summer on My Mind: Camp Scholarships and a Camp Endowment

The North American Jewish Community has been impacted by Jewish camp for many years. Starting as fresh air camps to enable kids to leave the tenements of the city, Jewish camp has become a ritual for over 70,000 campers each year. We in Indianapolis have been fortunate for the last several years to be able to offer grants of $1,000 from the Federation and the Foundation for Jewish Camp to first-time campers in grades 3-11 attending one of 150 non-profit Jewish camps for a period of at least three weeks. These grants, which are not needbased, are again available to a limited number of applicants on a first-come, first-served basis. A limited number of $750 grants are available to second-time campers who received the $1,000 One Happy Camper grant in 2012. These grants are provided as an incentive for families whose children are not receiving an intensive Jewish education. Applications for the One Happy Camper grant are on the website of the Foundation for Jewish Camp, www.onehappycamper.org.

In 2012, 34 young people from the Indianapolis area had the transformative experience of attending a Jewish summer camp. They had the to expand their horizons by learning new skills, participating in athletics, living with their cabinmates and developing their leadership abilities. In addition, they were exposed to Jewish values and practices in a nurturing and informal environment,

My involvement began through the Young Leadership Division in 2008. I started out just like many of my young peers by attending the vast amount programs and events. Then I was the YLD Cultural Chair. This year I became the YLD Co-Chair, Israel Partnership2Gether Tri-Team member, and Partnership2Gether and Yom Hazikaron/Yom Ha’atzmaut committee member!

Why did you get involved with Federation? After returning from Israel and New York in 2008 I was in need of a vibrant and exciting community. I was asked to attend a meeting at the JCC, and I came to discover that it was a steering committee meeting. I thought to myself, This is exactly what I need!

Nothing makes me happier than being part of the group that creates an event such as Jegas, and seeing the community come together! I was introduced to the many agencies of JFGI and the incredible impact that we all bring to people’s lives throughout the world.

something which will carry over into their adult life and the lives of their communities. Jewish camp has proven to be one of the most effective tools in connecting young people to Judaism. Many adults who attended Jewish camp attribute the experience with their interest in synagogue life, Jewish communal activities and Jewish family life.

Because the Jewish camp experience has such a positive impact on kids, the Federation has established an endowment, so that we can continue to offer grants to campers in the future. A significant endowment will be needed to offer this experience to 30 young people each year, and we welcome gifts of any amount. Keeping Up With YLD! A Very Sweet Rosh Hashanah

Over 30 young Jewish professionals and graduate students gathered at GUCI, the Jewish summer camp in Zionsville, for a sweet Rosh Hashanah Shabbat dinner on September 14. Participants enjoyed the great outdoors and a festive meal.

Meet, Talk, Love Hebrew

Hebrew Hour kicked things off in November and December by gathering once a month at a coffee shop to practice conversational Hebrew and relax with friends. Our shlicha Marva brought fun activities like Memory to help YLDers brush up on their basic vocabulary words and phrases. The first meeting on November 13 introduced everyone to a children’s story in Hebrew about a blue man. Attendees matched feelings with facial expressions on December 18. Look for a Hebrew Hour each month!

Out on the Town for Jew’s Night Out

“Wow, I didn’t know there were so many young Jewish professionals in Indy!” declared a first-time YLD event participant at Jews Night Out on November 17. Over 70 YLDrs reconnected with old friends and made new ones at 10-01 Restaurant and Bar in Broad Ripple. The evening was a huge success!

Access Cincinnati-Style Shabbat

On November 9 a group of YLDers headed to Cincinnati for a Cincinnati-themed Shabbat hosted by Access, an initiative of the Mayerson Foundation aimed at connecting unengaged Jewish young professionals (YPs).

The event was a great opportunity for YPs from all over the region to network and celebrate Shabbat. “Access plans events that are a great opportunity to connect with a fun group of like-minded people while expanding my network,” explains Jose Suriel. “Last year a friend and I showed up at an Access Tu B’shevat Planting Party in the middle of the week. The Cincinnati participants were baffled as to why we would make the drive for what they saw as such a small event. It made perfect sense to us, because we really enjoy meeting Jewish YPs from all over the region. Events like the Cincinnati-Style Shabbat dinner are especially great and fill me with pride when I see a diverse group of young Jews from different parts of the region socializing and making new friends!”

What Would You Bring?

“If you could bring one thing from Israel here and take one thing from here to Israel, what would it be?”

This is a question I was asked by one of the fifth grade students at Sunday school. I sat there in front of 28 ten-year-olds waiting to hear my answer, and thought to myself, Is there only one thing I would like to bring here and just one other thing I would like to take back when I leave?

My first thought was obviously food—I would bring real hummus, falafel, Krembo (call me if you don’t know what it is), my mom’s cooking. I would take back red velvet cake (we don’t have it in Israel), real cupcakes, Reese’s Cups.

But deep down I know there isn’t just one answer for this question.

At times I want to be able to bring the Israeli nature—the trees, the flowers, the evergreen environment I grew up in, the sea just a touch away and the desert just a drive away. Other times I wish I could bring the Israeli lightheartedness, the ability to just flow with situations, as reasonable or as unreasonable as they may be. On the other hand I wish I could bring some of the Israeli criticality, the argumentativeness and the knowledge that there will always be someone that will give you his honest opinion (whether you would like to hear it or not).

I wish I could bring all the members of my Kibbutz here to share with the Indianapolis community what a holiday party looks like back home. And maybe, even if just for once, to bring that feeling that is in the air on a Friday in Israel, the feeling just before the eve of a holiday and the knowledge it is Shabbat no matter where you are.

When I’ll go back home I would like to take with me the constant effort to keep your Jewish identity—something that in Israel is taken for granted too often, but here it is a daily struggle that many members of the community go through successfully every day. I would like to take the ability of different congregations, movements and people to sit in peace with each other, respecting each other and sometimes even working together for the greater good of the community.

And on top of all I would like to take people. I’ve already met so many great friends in the short period of time I have spent here who I would be happy to bring back home with me to Israel, and I am sure the list will just get longer as time keeps on moving.

I will finish with returning the question back to you: What would you take with you if and when you go to Israel? And what will you bring back?

Libby Fogel Lunch Bunch Chanukah Luncheon Each year the Libby Fogle Lunch Bunch hosts a Chanukah Luncheon.

Attendees of the 2012 luncheon enjoyed an outstanding meal prepared by Corine, Kim and Brittany at the JCC. Thank you for the outpouring of help from our coworkers and volunteers and our amazing volunteers from the Mitvzah Corps at the Hasten Hebrew Academy! Lunch Bunch goers had the wonderful entertainment of Patti Dorson and the kids from the BJE. The Libby Fogle Lunch Bunch is a program of the Albert & Sara Reuben Senior and Community Resource Center that meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays at noon for great food and conversation with friends.

Elder-Friendly Communities Breaks Ground on New Shared Housing

It’s time! The Crooked Creek Community Development Committee is preparing to break ground on a shared senior home. The brainchild of Ann Allen and Cindy Wides of Elder-Friendly Communities, this shared home will be available for rent to four independent adults 60 years old or older.

Things began in 2010 with focus groups facilitated with Karen Gentleman and Mike McCarty, when Elder-Friendly Communities, CICOA and the Crooked Creek CDC set out to develop an affordable place for seniors. The basic idea, in addition to an affordable housing option, is to offer increased security and socialization for the older adults who will live together. Utilities will be included in the rent, and the CDC will take responsibility for yard maintence. Phone and cable will be the responsibility of the individual resident. Of course, there will be contracts and agreements to sign and abide by.

After a few hiccups, the Crooked Creek CDC has acquired a lot within the NORC (Naturally Occurring Retirement Community) community and secured financing for the project. The CDC is beginning the design and bidding process based on the input from 2010 focus groups.

Wheels to Wellness Gets New Wheels

Do you know about the ASRSCRC Wheels to Wellness program? It offers escorted medical transportation for people over the age of 60 to medical appointments.

Thanks to the Arthur & Florence Brock Fund, Wheels to Wellness has a new vehicle to provide this great service to those who need it in our community.

Hebrew School Solidifies Connection with Israel Hebrew School students have been exchanging projects with students at Shazar School in the Western Galilee. So far, the two schools have sent and received Rosh Hashanah and Chanukah greetings and gifts. Students are preparing Tu B’shevat gifts that Rabbi Paula will deliver to Shazar School students when she travels to Israel. This school pairing has been coordinated through Israel Partnership2Gether.

BJE—Not Just for Children

Did you know the BJE has Biblical Hebrew, modern Hebrew and trope classes for adults? Modern Hebrew classes are offered on Monday evenings, and Siddur Hebrew classes are on Sunday mornings. Individualized tutoring is available for adults who cannot attend scheduled classes or want to learn for a special event. Hebrew to be Offered at Carmel High School

Next school year Carmel High School will offer Hebrew as a World Language Course, but only if enough students enroll!

Studying Hebrew in high school allows students to: • Use their prior Hebrew studies and work towards fluency in Hebrew.

• Further understand the culture and people of Israel.

• Receive advanced credit for college courses or exempt them from further language requirements.

Students interested in taking Hebrew at Carmel should speak with their guidance counselor as soon as possible. Changes to student registration for the 2013-2014 school year must be made by May 1.

JCRC’s Busy Fall 2012 Candidate Debates

In October, over 300 people attended two JCRC Candidate Debates: a State House forum for Indiana House districts 86 and 87 and Indiana Senate district 30, and a debate among candidates for Indiana’s 5th Congressional District. The JCRC’s “Lighting Round” of questions, where candidates may only answer “yes” or “no,”has become a signature part of these events.

Operation Pillar of Defense

In November, the JCRC kept our community abreast of the most current information as Operation Pillar of Defense unfolded. JCRC’s op-ed in The Indianapolis Star, as well as pieces disseminated to the community via email, Facebook and Twitter, provided timely coverage and analysis of the Operation, as well as larger issues facing Israel with respect to Hamas, Iran and the entire region.

JCRC Meets with Israeli Consulate

In December, the JCRC Executive Board traveled to Chicago to visit with the staff of the Israeli Consulate, as well as the Chicago JCRC, AIPAC and ADL. The discussions centered on how JCRC can better partner with the Consulate and these national agencies on a range of educational and advocacy opportunities.

JCRC Government Affairs Committee

The JCRC Government Affairs Committee begins meeting regularly during the Indiana General Assembly. The committee, which is open to all members of the Jewish community, helps direct the JCRC’s legislative advocacy. Meetings take place bi-weekly from January through April. Marcia Goldstone Retires Excerpts from remarks Dr. Marcia Goldstone delivered at her retirement party on September 27, 2012: … As JCRC Executive Director, I have been blessed with the opportunity to do work about which I am so passionate, creating partnerships to address issues that are challenging and meaningful. I am so proud of our accomplishments and profoundly aware that I never walked alone. The most important components of an agency are the lay leadership. JCRC has attracted extraordinary leaders whose presidencies lent dignity to the JCRC: Zeke Friedlander, my first president, followed by Gladys Nisenbaum, Alan Goldstein, Ed Hodes, Norm Sider, Irv Katz, Howard Edenbeg, Mickey Maurer, Claudette Einhorn, David Vonnegut-Gabovitch, Bonnie Prystowsky, Offer Korin, Henry Efroymson, David Warshauer, Michael Wallack and Todd Maurer. Lisa Kastler Curry Joins the Hooverwood Admission Department

Hooverwood is delighted to welcome Lisa Kastler Curry to our Admissions Department.

Lisa began her employment with Hooverwood in August of 2012, but was certainly not a stranger to our organization. For the last nine years Lisa completed mental health assessments on our residents in conjunction with her employment with Aspire Indiana.

Lisa holds a B.S. in Psychology and Criminal Justice Studies from Iowa State University and worked in the judicial system in Illinois and Georgia.

Lisa works closely with Barb Rettig and coordinates all the short-term and long-term admissions to Hooverwood.

Members of Congregation Beth Shalom saw a productive year in 2012 of positive growth and increasing presence in the Jewish community.

Superstars Are Coming to Bloomington and Indianapolis in 2013

True celebrities will not be present, but homegrown talent will compete for a $5,000 grand prize.

The competition, called “Campus Superstar” and chaired by Dick Leventhal, is open to any college student in the state of Indiana and is the Helene G Simon Hillel Center’s largest fundraiser.

The contest is based on American Idol and has run annually since 2004, with Brooke Wood as the defending winner from 2012. Hillel Executive Director, Rabbi Sue Laikin Silberberg thinks this wonderful event showcases college students’ talent. “This is a fantastic way to help students grow their singing talent and raise awareness of the gift these young people have musically,” she says.

Auditions will be held February 3 in Indianapolis and February 10 and 17 in Bloomington. Students who audition will have a chance to compete in the semi-finals at the Buskirk Chumley Theatre in Bloomington on March 24. The top 10 contestants, based on the judges’ votes and an audience top choice award, will move on to the final round of competition on April 21 at the Indianapolis Museum of Art Toby Theater.

Silberberg notes that holding the finals in the Circle City is important, because Hillel gets much support from Indianapolis. “Our Governing Board, alumni, parents and friends in Indianapolis are very strong and help us to function as an organization,” she says. “We invite everyone to come out and enjoy the event.”

Brooke Wood, 2012 CSS Winner IU Hillel is the center for Jewish life for over 4,000 Jewish students on the IU campus and trains the Jewish leaders of tomorrow. It provides many services for students including Shabbat dinners, kosher meals, social programming and even delivers matzo ball soup to sick students.

On November 30 over 50 students from Ball State, Butler, DePauw and Purdue gathered at Purdue’s hillel for a big Shabbat dinner. The evening, organized by our shlicha Marva with the help of Philip Shlossberg, began with a student-led Shabbat service. Everyone then sat down for dinner prepared by Philip. The Shabbat evening together promoted a feeling of community between the Hillels.

Students from different universities who all share the desire to have a Jewish life in college got the chance to come together in one place and meet each other.

Everyone is very excited to get together again soon.

Hands-On and Creative Learning at The Hasten Hebrew Academy The Hasten Hebrew Academy approaches education in a variety of ways. Students learn at their own pace in both Judaic and General Studies through differentiation in math and reading, hands-on experience and instruction in writing and reading. In December our students had the opportunity to be creative by designing their own Chanukah menorahs. Fourth graders celebrated Indiana’s birthday by visiting the State House.

Dina Cohen, of Fusion by Dina, showed students in grades 2, 3 and 4 how sufganiyot are made as part of their Judaic curriculum. The students helped cut out the donuts and learned how yeast makes them rise. As they talked about ingredients and cooking temperatures, they learned about the science of baking.
