Antisemitism is not what I wanted to be writing about in this letter, but it would be remiss of me not to mention the incident that occurred at Congregation Shaarey Tefilla at the end of July.

Since 1905 the Federation and its agencies – Jewish Family Services, the Jewish Community Center, the Jewish Community Relations Council, and Hoover wood, a residential nursing home – have played a vital role in providing programs and services that ever y day support roughly 2,000 individuals in central Indiana—Jewish as well as non-Jewish. The Federation, with an Annual Campaign of $3.9 million, resides on and manages a 40 -acre campus, and its impact enriches the lives of Jews locally, nationally, in Israel, and around the world.

By the time you read this in September, our new mission, vision, and funding priorities (and subsequent new allocations process) should be in place. This time last year, the results of our Jewish Community Study were just coming in. These results prompted us to do the strategic planning mentioned above and to rethink how we offer Jewish education and otherwise engage the greater Indianapolis Jewish community. We’re excited to share our “one year later” reflections with you in the coming months.

Strategic Planning

Campus Security Enhancements and Capacity Building Initiatives In 2017, the Jewish Federation received a multi-year grant for security enhancements and capacity building from Lilly Endowment. Recently, the Federation submitted its first interim progress report and was pleased to inform Lilly Endowment that during the first six months of the grant period it had been able to make several security enhancements to the campus: The Federation purchased a generator for use in keeping building doors locked in the event of a power outage, added four more digitally operated security doors, upgraded the IT server that networks both interior and exterior campus-wide security cameras, and installed campus email security software.

To build organizational capacity, the grant also enabled the Federation to retain the services of a consulting firm that has begun working with the Federation, its agencies and beneficiaries, and area synagogues to develop a long-term strategic plan for the Federation.

Planned Giving & Endowment Friends Over 90 Luncheon The 2018 “Friends Over 90 Celebration Luncheon,” sponsored by Diane Lutz and hosted by Jewish Family Services and JFGI’s Endowment Department, was held on Wednesday, June 27 at Etz Chaim Sephardic Congregation. Over 35 community members gathered to share a scrumptious lunch and enjoyed time with friends.

Debby Barton Grant gave a brief overview of current happenings in the Jewish community. A huge thank you to caterer Maarten Van Eijk (Catering by Maarten), Doug Pritchard (photographer), and Alan Cohen for allowing the use of Etz Chaim’s lovely social hall.

Women's Philanthropy Women’s Philanthropy Goes from Strength to Strength The Women’s Philanthropy Steering Committee and Federation leadership are grateful to Michelle Korin and Beth Klapper for their leadership in developing the growing Women’s Philanthropy program. Together they helped to build the Women’s Philanthropy team, set its mission, and begin to develop new and exciting opportunities for women to inspire and empower each other to be change makers and community shapers. On August 1, Karen Rothbaum and Gigi Marks Felsher took over as chairs of this committee, and the planning continues uninterrupted.

On July 26, Women’s Philanthropy hosted a meet-up before the sold-out documentary Eva at the Arthur M. Glick JCC. In addition to meeting new people, the attendees were also able to meet with Eva Kor and the film's producer Ted Green to ask questions about the making of the film and Eva’s remarkable life.

The weather was perfect for hors d'oeuvres in the Efroymson Garden.

Israel & Overseas Indy International Festival 2018 Volunteers Needed!

Thurs.-Sat., Nov. 8-10 | Indiana State Fairgrounds The Indy International Festival is an annual cultural experience filled with tastes, smells, sights, and sounds from around the world. Help staff the Israel booth and share the Holy Land with Indianapolis! Shifts are three hours each, starting at 9 am and going until 9 pm.

3 rd Annual Indianapolis Israeli Film Festival Thanks to everyone who attended the 3rd Annual Indianapolis Israeli Film Festival! From opening night’s screening downtown at the Athenaeum to closing night’s post-film Skype session with Israeli filmmaker Yonatan Nir, a wonderful time was had by all.

In July, Indianapolis was honored to host the traveling photography exhibition “People of the Western Galilee,” a Partnership2Gether program spearheaded by Midwest locals Freddie Kelvin and Dena Eber that showcased the portraits and life stories of 30 Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Druze, and Ethiopian Israelis.

At the exhibit’s closing event, co-presented by JFGI, JCC Indianapolis, and Indianapolis JCRC, Freddie and Dena talked about the creation of the exhibition, after which the Israel Action Network’s Community Strategy Associate Zachary Schaffer shared a reflection on diversity, coexistence, and the power of art to foster empathy.

Schaffer then moderated a panel featuring local Indy activists Rima Shahid (Women4Change Indiana), Adrianne Slash (Exchange at the Indianapolis Urban League and JCC board member) and Katie Blair (ACLU Indiana), who discussed civility, civil discourse, and their own personal stories.

Skyping with Israeli filmmaker Yonatan Nir after the screening of The Essential Link - The Story of Wilfrid Israel

Shlicha 10 Years of Shlichim (Israeli Emissaries) in Indianapolis Each year, The Jewish Agency for Israel sends between 1,500 and 1,750 Israeli emissaries – shlichim – around the world to strengthen Jewish identity and connection to Israel. These shlichim are selected from more than 10,000 applicants, and represent the best of Israel.

Since 2008, Indianapolis has welcomed eight shlichim. Each shaliach (m) or shlicha (f) immerses themselves into the community for an average of two years. They work with schools, synagogues, churches, and other community and religious organizations to give Jewish and non-Jewish people exposure to Israel. At the same time, they get to experience a different Jewish community than the one they’re used to, which allows them to act as ambassadors for Israelis to learn about other ways of being Jewish. Here are some highlights of Indianapolis' former shlichim.

Etay Furman (2008-2010) started an Israeli rock band for Indianapolis teens.

Guy Shahar (2010-2011) helped put together "CelebRUSSIAN," an event showcasing Russian culture.

Adi Shacham (2011-2012) put together a book, The Same Moon, connecting Indy families with Israeli families, through the Partnership2Gether program with the Western Galilee.

Marva Eden (2012-2013) put on a "Good Deeds Day" food drive for Passover with the Young Leadership Division.

Did you know...

• Rosh Hashanah, or the Jewish new year, falls on the first day of the Hebrew month of Tishrei, which this year corresponds to September 10. The new hebrew year is 5779.

• The shofar is an ancient instrument traditionally made from a ram’s horn and used as a call to attention. The Biblical story of a ram being sacrificed in place of Isaac (Yitzchak) is read on the second day of Rosh Hashanah in connection with the blowing of the shofar.

• The foods eaten on Rosh Hashanah symbolize communal hopes for the coming year. Apples dipped in honey represent sweetness, and freshly in-season pomegranates have as many seeds as the Torah has mitzvot (commandments).

• Kugel (an Eastern European potato or noodle casserole) can be eaten at any celebration but most often makes its appearance during the High Holidays.

Youth Philanthropy Indy (YoPhI) YoPhI Teen Board Starts Making a Difference Congratulations to the inaugural YoPhI (Youth Philanthropy Indy) Teen Board! JFGI is honored to have been selected by the Jewish Teen Funders Network as a Foundation Board Incubator site for new youth philanthropy programs.

The 16 teens listed below are the face of the Indianapolis Jewish community’s future. Over the coming year they will be working with JFGI’s new Director of Youth Philanthropy and Connection, David Heilbron, to define a mission, research the topic, collect grant requests, and then allocate funds as a philanthropic board to make a difference in their community. Along the way, they will learn about philanthropy and gain valuable leadership skills.

Education and Engagement Innovating How Indy Teaches Hebrew Many exciting, new models of Hebrew education are being introduced into the Indianapolis Jewish community in 5779 (the new Hebrew year). Three congregations received a JFGI Hebrew Education Innovation Grant to support their new Hebrew programs: • Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation (IHC) is focusing on active learning by emphasizing the Hebrew through Movement approach to Hebrew instruction.

• At Congregation Shaarey Tefilla, students will have their Hebrew instruction enriched by the use of technology and the ShalomLearning online platform.

• The new Hebrew program at Congregation Beth-El Zedeck spans grades K-10 and provides diverse ways for students to connect with and master Hebrew.

All of these new Hebrew programs aim to make Hebrew a living language and deepen students’ connections with Hebrew. As Jed Filler, IHC’s Director of Lifelong Learning notes, “No more sitting at desks! Laughing, movement, playing and learning are all combined in our new approach to learning Hebrew.” The community appreciates the significant work congregations have invested in developing these new programs and looks for ward to hearing laughter and Hebrew words throughout congregational hallways on Sunday mornings in the coming year.

JFGI is excited to announce that the Indianapolis Jewish community has received grants to support meaningful, engaging adult Jewish learning opportunities in Indy.

Teachers are one of the Indianapolis Jewish community’s greatest resources. JFGI is committed to investing in teacher professional development:

Taste of Hebrew The National Center to Encourage Judaism (ncejudaism.org) is supporting the Taste of Hebrew series, which enables adults to learn how to decode Hebrew in just six hours. The course will be held at local synagogues but is open to anyone in the community for a minimal charge of $18. Participants will attend four 90 -minute classes and receive additional individualized support to help them learn how to read Hebrew for the first time or refresh skills that may be a bit rusty.

Chai Mitzvah Indianapolis has been selected to be a Chai Mitzvah Ignite city. Monthly informal Jewish learning circles will launch at various synagogues and other community locations in the fall.

Chai Mitzvah is a wonderful way to meet community members, engage in informal Jewish study, and find new meaning in Jewish rituals. The learning circles are open to anyone interested in making a commitment to attend nine sessions over the course of the year.

PJ Library PJ Baby Connect PJ Library in Indianapolis is launching a new initiative this fall called PJ Baby Connect, which will help build community and friendships and offer neighborhood-based programming for families with children ages 0 -2. PJ Baby Connect strives to provide easily accessible meet-ups to help parents in a very critical time in their family’s life.

Neighborhood programming will take place in Indianapolis, Carmel, Westfield, Zionsville, and Noblesville. This will hopefully make it easy for parents to balance nap schedules, home and work obligations, and additional children, and make meeting other parents and accessing the Jewish community a lot easier. The programs will be informal and led by parents, taking place at libraries, in-home playdates, parks, and more.

Finding Your Place in B’nai Mitzvah A New Program for Interfaith Families with Kids in the Bar/Bat Mitzvah Pipeline Preparing for b’nai mitzvah can feel complicated and over whelming for any parent. This 4-session program helps interfaith families find their place in b’nai mitzvah through learning about the lifecycle event, meeting with families who will share their prior experiences, and developing strategies for family members of all faith traditions to feel welcome and part of the festivities.

Jewish Family Services (JFS) A Memorable Visit with John and Amy Israel Pregulman Written by JFS Program Director Rachel Kesner In July, I had the opportunity to spend three days with John and Amy Israel Pregulman, who launched the “KAVOD – Ensuring Dignity for Holocaust Survivors” organization in 2015 (not to be confused with the JFS program, also called KAVOD).

When John and Amy learned that more than 30 -35% of Holocaust Survivors in the U.S. are living at or below the poverty line, they knew they had to do something. Through KAVOD, Amy and John have raised and distributed over $150,000 to Holocaust Survivors in need, and we have been so fortunate to share this resource with our local Survivor community.

Photography Legacy Project John and Amy also launched the Photography Legacy Project to honor Holocaust Survivors all over the world. John has taken 679 photos of Survivors in the U.S., Prague, Krakow, and Tokyo. While in Indianapolis, John photographed 26 of our local Survivors, and we can’t wait to share them with you!

Izzy Ezagui On Januar y 8, 20 09, Izzy Ezagui, an American who had enlisted in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) at 19, lost his arm in a mortar attack. In his book, Disarmed: Unconventional Wisdom from the World’s Only One-Armed Special Forces Sharpshooter, Ezagui recounts with stirring honesty and wr y humor his tortuous trek through rehabilitation to re-enlistment.

Hasten Hebrew Academy of Indianapolis (HHAI) HHAI Alumnae Compete in Inaugural International Maccabi Youth Games When Anna Voskoboynik and Iszabel Cohen found out they’d made Team USA for the first ever International Maccabi Youth Games, held in Haifa July 23-August 1, neither girl could believe it. The HHAI alumnae (classes of 2016 and 2018 respectively) had sent in tryout videos of themselves playing volleyball, but to actually be selected as two of the 300 total Team USA athletes?

Talk about the opportunity of a lifetime!

“To play out of the country against all these other countries, I think that’s really cool,” Iszabel said when interviewed prior to the trip. “I’m excited to make friends with people from all over the country and all over the world.”

As HHAI alumnae, both Iszabel and Anna had the opportunity to travel to Israel in eighth grade and were thrilled to be going back. “You go play your favorite sport and you’re in a beautiful country… Coming back to Israel is like coming back home for me,” Anna said. “I’m excited to see the Israeli culture again and become closer with my Jewish identity.”

HHAI Teachers Learn "Maker" Education Four HHAI teachers (Tricia Berg, Sarit Linkon, Matt Tucker, and Michael Voskoboynik) were invited as only one of 12 day schools in the United States to participate in a "maker education"focused technology institute in San Francisco this summer. Maker education incorporates STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) learning with hands-on, collaborative projectbased activities in design thinking.

Not only were teachers engaged in how to bring this innovative work into general studies classrooms, but also in how to incorporate these technology-forward strategies into Judaic studies and integrated collaboration between general and Jewish curricula.

Innovation for 2018-2019 It was an intense week of speakers and hands-on experience equipping these teachers with tools, ideas, and resources to bring back to students for the upcoming school year. In addition to the innovations in maker education, teachers also learned of the important process of design thinking which provides students with a solution-based approach to problem solving.

As a result of their participation in the technology institute, a project combining STEM learning, maker education, and Judaic studies will be implemented over the course of the next school year in the form of an interactive community-based Holocaust museum. Indiana University Hillel IU Hillel: Building for the Future Meet Capital Campaign Director Carrie McHaley Carrie McHaley is excited to join IU Hillel as Capital Campaign Director as they embark on an exciting journey to build a new home for the Jewish family at IU. A proud IU alumna, Carrie brings almost 15 years of fundraising and development experience back to Bloomington. She has worked for organizations small and large; local, national and international; with incredibly varied missions.

Most recently, Carrie served as the Foundation Manager at Northern Suburban Special Recreation Association in Northbrook, Illinois, leading the development of their capital campaign to build a new facility for the organization. Prior to that she worked as Development Manager for Women’s Global Education Project to fund education for girls in Africa and as Development Director for Nonprofit Leadership Alliance to develop a nonprofit talent pipeline. She also spent seven years as the Development Director at The Bridge Youth & Family Services helping children and families receive needed mental and behavioral health services.

Carrie returned to Bloomington this summer with her husband, James, and two daughters, Lilia and Maya.

“The Jewish home away from home” IU Hillel is the home away from home for Jewish students on the IU campus and Carrie looks for ward to building the foundation of the new home for Jewish life at Indiana University. She remembers fondly her “at-home” experiences during her time at IU as a student and is eager to learn and share her expertise to make IU Hillel the best home it can be for every Jewish student. Jewish Studies Funding Recipients The Robert A. and Sandra S. Borns Jewish Studies Program at Indiana University announces its 2018-2019 funding, in which the state of Indiana is very well represented!

• Indianapolis’ Taylor-Paige Guba, who interned for JFGI’s Jewish Education department this past summer, received the 4-year Roberta and Arthur Kroot Scholarship, worth up to $10,000 a year!

• Maria Bashmakov of Carmel and Maya Geller-Montague of Indianapolis are two of the five recipients of the Robert A. and Sandra S. Borns Merit Scholarship.

• Clara Fridman and Rachel Sendrow of Carmel, Tahlia Korin of Indianapolis, and Jacob Levy of Munster are four of the 12 recipients of the Robert A. and Sandra S. Borns Scholarship.

• Carmel’s Naomi Farahan, a former JCRC intern, received the Irving Katz Scholarship, preference for which is given to students studying Jewish history.

• Muncie’s Maryam Hindi received the Andrew C. and Jane A. Mallor Overseas Study Scholarship to study abroad in Israel at Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
