by CLAUDIA SHERMAN Friedel Jewish Academy Eleven years ago, enrollment at Friedel Jewish Academy was 18 students. Today, there are 49 eager kindergarten through sixth graders studying everything from history, math, and reading as well as participating in band, orchestra, physical education, art, and library. They also learn about Israel and how to speak Hebrew through an internationally acclaimed, totalimmersion program. “It’s not yesterday’s Friedel,” said Debbie Denenberg, chair of the school’s annual campaign which is now in progress. With a goal of $150,000, Denenberg, a Friedel Board member for approximately eight years, pointed out that national studies conclude that being Jewish is “very important” to 64 percent of day school students, seven to twelve years old. That’s 13 to 28 percent higher than for other Jewish children who represent all three of Omaha’s synagogues. They also come from unaffiliated families and from Lincoln. They speak a variety of languages including Dutch, Spanish, and Hebrew at home. “As the institution most dedicated to growing future knowledgeable

Tuition of about $6,500 per student covers about half the expense of educating each child. “That’s true for private schools everywhere,” Denenberg explained. “We really need the support of the entire Jewish community,” she emphasized, “and we promise Continued on page 2

by MARY SUE GROSSMAN Program Coordinator, The Center for Jewish Life A joint mission had been a longtime dream of the communities in Omaha’s Partnership2GETHER consortium. That dream became a reality last month when 33 people from Omaha, Austin, Des Moines, Dayton,

South Bend and Louisville participated in PartnershipTRIP2GETHER. The mission was triggered with the decision by Ballet Austin to travel to Israel to present an extraordinary program entitled Light/The Holocaust and Humanity Project. A fulllength contemporary ballet, Light includes a Holocaust education partnership that promotes the protection of human rights against bigotry and hate through arts, education, and public dialogue. Since its world premiere in Austin in April 2005, Light has travelled to Philadelphia, Miami and Denver. The overseas performances in Akko and Tel Aviv came about through the collaborative efforts of the Partnership2GETHER Central Area Consortium, the Austin Continued on page 2

by AARON MICHAELSON Adeev and Ezra Potash also known as the Potash Twins have been selected to participate in the upcoming TEDx talk on Oct. 26 at Creighton University’s Harper Center. TED is a nonprofit devoted to “Ideas Worth Spreading.” It started in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader. Along with two annual conferences -- the TED Conference and TEDGlobal -- TED includes the award-winning TED Talks video site, the Open Translation Project and TED Conversations, the inspiring TED Fellows and TEDx programs, and the annual TED Prize. Check out more about TED at www.ted.com. TEDxOmaha 2013 will explore influence: “Influence is the push and pull on all of our experiences,

internally, externally, globally” according to the TEDxOmaha website. Adeev and Ezra will explore how twins influence and communicate with each other through Jazz improvisation. Upon graduating from Westside High School, Ezra and Adeev moved to New York City to develop as performers and educators. Adeev studies under Dizzy Gillespie protégé Jon Faddis at SUNY Purchase and Ezra studies at the Manhattan School of Music. The Potash twins are recipients of the prestigious Karen Sokolof Javitch Fund for music scholarship. The Potash Twins have performed around the country at notable venues as Jazz at Lincoln Center and First Avenue, as well as the festival South By Southwest (SXSW), and have performed with piano virtuoso Jonathan Batiste.
