As they learned Jewish values, studied Jewish texts and history, celebrated holidays and culture, developed their liturgical literacy, and broadened their understanding of the State of Israel, this year’s students were also the first group to attend the new Omaha Jewish Chai School. Just ask Aaron Zipursky. On May 16, the 15-year-old Burke High School student had the unique experience of bidding adieu to his school science experiment as it blasted off into space on the final flight of the space shuttle Endeavour. Zipursky’s experiment, along with 15 others from around the

country (out of 447 applicants), was selected in a contest associated with the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP). His proposed experiment focused on honey’s viability as a preservative - in this case, preserving a raw egg -- on long-duration space flights. “I came up with the idea of working with honey from a list of materials all participants had to choose from,” he said.
