A Tribute to Community Members We Lost

Harriette Ellis-Her Legacy Shines Brightly

Sharon Kenigsberg, MA | Friend and Former Colleague

Smart, caring, supportive, larger than life, one-of-a kind, intelligent, respected, compassionate activist, mentor, friend, a beacon of light to all who knew and adored her, wise, lovely smile...these are just a few of the loving adjectives that poured out of friends paying tribute to Harriette, who passed away a few weeks shy of her 100th birthday. Jewish Long Beach Board member Linda Waltzman remarked, “Harriette has been the undeniable expert keeper of the history of Jewish Long Beach for many decades”. Others remarked that her kindness was ever present and her impact on our community was so long lasting.

Harriette served our community as both a journalistic professional and a community volunteer. An awardwinning writer, editor, and graphic artist, Harriette served as the editor of the Jewish Community Chronicle and its earlier version the Jewish Federation News for many years. Her dedication and professionalism- all done with a smile- served as an inspiration for all who worked with her. Harriette appears in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in American Women. She served on many boards and committees both inside and outside of the Jewish community. Harriette received numerous awards and was honored by Temple Israel in 2012 as a Woman of Vision for the Jewish Long Beach Women’s Philanthropy Arlene Solomon Visions event.

“This grand friend of mine has died.” Sharon Amster Brown, Director of Education & Congregational Engagement for Temple Israel of Long Beach expressed. “Ours was the perfect example of how friendship knows no age. Fifty years apart and yet as close as could be. I am so very grateful for our time spent together and for the many lessons she taught me. And I am also so sad. Special appreciation to her family for allowing me to be part of their extended family. My Dear Harriette, you will be forever missed and remembered”.

Harriette, a loving mother and grandmother, will be missed by her family and all of us, but her life lessons and warmth will live on. I cherish the friendship I had with this amazing woman and as Linda said, “I can hear her voice and laughter even now”. May her memory be a blessing.

Dr. James Licht

Judi Lentzner | Friend

The Long Beach community is profoundly saddened by the death of Dr. Jim Licht who died Friday, January 19th after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s. Jim was a loving father to daughter Jaime (Jess) Field and son David (Amber) Licht and a devoted grandpa to Anna, (Anne’s namesake), and Rachel Field and Jordan, James, (Jim’s namesake) and Jakey Licht and brother Doug Licht and husband David Ezra. Jim was also the widower to Anne Licht who preceded him in death in 2008.

Born and raised in The City, a lifetime Giants, 49er and CAL fan who taught his kids and everyone around him to be the same. Jim was a gentle giant, easygoing man, that brought calm to those around him both in his social circle and medical practice. The handsome lefty with a full heart and easy to laugh, loved all things athletic-playing numerous sports throughout his life including biking, tennis and golf. His love for watching his kids and grandkids on the field was unmatched. Jim was an avid reader and history buff, a well-rounded scholar and beloved by his friends, colleagues and patients whom he loved in return.

Dr. James Licht attended the University of California at Berkeley for his undergrad

degree and then received his M.D. from the University of Cincinnati. His postdoctorate training was at both Davis and Irvine. Dr. Licht was board certified in both cardiology and internal medicine. He was Co-Director of the Echocardiography Laboratory at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center and for 15 years was Director of UC Irvine’s Fellowship Training Program at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.

Dr. Adrian Shandling, his partner at Cardiovascular Care in Los Alamitos since the early 2000’s, first met Jim in July of 1985 when Dr. Shandling was a new cardiology fellow at UCI. Jim immediately made Adrian feel welcomed and put him at ease in his role as Fellowship Director and Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCI. Jim was well-trained at UC Davis and was an expert in the mechanisms of cardiac disease. He was also excellent in the cath. lab, doing a

procedure called a mitral valvotomy, done by only a handful of people in the country at that time. Dr. Shandling said, “he was privileged to share an office with my mentor and “pick his brain” until Jim’s recent retirement. On a personal level, he and Anne were the first double date when I began dating my current wife. I trusted Jim’s judgment personally, medically, and not the least for his golfing expertise. He was a good friend, a true mensch, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.”

A heartfelt thank you to his friends and neighbors who accompanied Jim on walks, visited with him regularly and fed his soul with love and wonderful home cooked meals.

May his memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved this amazing man!

Jewish Long Beach honors outstanding leaders and volunteers at the 2023 Annual Meeting

Jewish Long Beach was proud to continue the tradition of honoring volunteers and leaders with a series of time-honored awards at the 2023 Annual Meeting on January 24, 2024.

The Robert Baldwin Community Service Award recognizes dedicated volunteers for years of outstanding service through Tzedakah, Responsibility, Support of community, and support of Israel. The award was established by the family of Bob Baldwin in recognition of how Bob’s life epitomized these principles. This year’s Baldwin honorees are none other than Dr. Matt Davis and Dr. Mark Dressner. Matt and Mark are both esteemed family physicians in Long Beach. Mark is a past president of Temple Israel Long Beach, former board member of JFCS, and member of the Jewish Long Beach nominating committee. At the time of the Annual Meeting, he has just returned from a mission to Israel, volunteering in the neglected kibbutzim near the Gaza border and in nearby hospitals. Matt is a past president of Alpert JCC and former chair of the Medical Advisory committee, which steered our agency through the worst of the pandemic.

The Stanley Goldin Senior of the Year Award is given in memory of long-time leader Stanley Goldin. It is awarded to a senior adult who displays leadership and commitment to the Alpert JCC senior adult program. This year the award is given to Ila Patterson. Ila was the Core Captain in the kitchen for senior luncheons throughout 2023. She has been proactive in solving organizational challenges, helps lead the service teams, and is a dedicated

and hard-working volunteer to support senior and other programming events. “She is a joy to work with,” says Anneleise Thompson, Adult Programs and Volunteer Manager.

The Neuburger Leadership Development Award was established by the family of Fred Neuburger, to honor his memory by nurturing young, future leaders. The recipient must have a vision for strengthening our Jewish community and the desire and ability to motivate others to become active in the Jewish community. This year’s Neuburger awardee is Vicki Scherwin, Ph.D. Vicki is a leadership consultant specializing in executive coaching and developing leadership curricula. She is also an adjunct professor at UCI Merage and CSULB College of Business. Vicki has two sons who both went through the Alpert JCC ECE. She is a graduate of the Alpert New Leaders Forum and Lentzner Fellows, is a current Jewish Long Beach Board Member, and serves as the Chair of the Grants Committee.

The Tess Wohlstattar Hineni Award is presented annually to a volunteer who has gone above and beyond in their role. We are honored to present this award to Ken Schlesinger based on his tireless work as the chair of the Advocacy & Education Committee. Ken Schlesinger is a firstgeneration American and grandchild of Holocaust survivors Julius and Judy Schlesinger. Ken’s life in the Jewish Community began as a K’ton Ton camper at the Alpert JCC. He received his formal Jewish Education at Temple Beth Shalom & The Hebrew Academy. He is currently a

member of Shul by the Shore. Ken serves on the boards of Beach Hillel and Jewish Long Beach. He currently chairs the Community Yom HaShoah Committee and the Advocacy & Education Committee. Ken says, “It is an honor and privilege for me to follow in the path of my parents and uncle as a leader in the Long Beach Jewish Community. I am truly grateful.”

We are also proud to honor the following volunteers with Chai Awards for exceptional service in a variety of roles:

• Barbara & Ben Alhadeff

• Kathy Dwyer

• Juliene King

• Gina & Jack Rosenthal

• Daniel Shere

• Natasha Galpin

• Sara Linden

Be Happy, It’s Adar!

As we are poised to enter spring after a rainy California winter, I have been reflecting on the cadence of our cycle of Jewish holidays. We move from the new year in the fall to a series of holidays commemorating the adversity and triumph that the Jewish people have witnessed throughout history. Starting with Hanukkah in the winter, and on to Purim, Pesach (Passover), Yom HaShoah (Holocaust remembrance), Yom Ha’Atzmaut (Israel Independence), and finally Shavuot (the giving of the Torah).

These “witness” holidays seem to me to be in no particular order other than a very loose timeline based on the time of year that these holidays were observed, or we think they happened. We jump around in history from the biblically based High Holy Days, commemorating the birth of the

Jewish world nearly 6,000 years ago and which first appears in the Talmud in the 6th Century BCE, to Hanukkah’s rededication of the Temple in 164 BCE, to Purim dating back to 356 BCE, to Passover dating to the 1200s BCE. After Passover we count the 49 days of the Omer (sefirah or sheafoffering) until the holyday of Shavuot, when we commemorate the anniversary of the giving of the Torah at Mt. Sinai.

This year we began the month of Adar 1 in February, and soon, Adar 2 in March. If you have looked forward in the Jewish Calendar you know that Rosh HaShanah appears in October of 2024. The purpose of the insertion of an additional Adar is to adjust the lunar calendar to align with the Gregorian calendar so that our holidays will continue to roughly align with the seasons. So, next year when we will have only one Adar, the High Holy Days will shift back to September.

So, we move along this spiritual timeline, coming full circle, but partially in reverse order, reflecting not only on our heritage,

but also on our history as a people. This bears out the idea that not only are we a people of history, but more so, a people of memory. Interestingly the Rabbis have imbued our spiritual cycle with many times of celebration and therefore happiness, but Adar is the one time of year in which we are specifically called to focus on happiness with abandon. As we all know too well since October 7th, we as a Jewish community have felt once again threatened, just as we commemorate our cycle of holidays, I would argue that Adar, and Purim, are coming at exactly the right time. This period allows us to step back from the fear and confusion we have been feeling over the war in Gaza and the demonization of the Jewish people by Hamas, and their supporters.

This year, Jewish Long Beach will be celebrating both Purim and our connection to the culture and people of Israel at our Israeli Purim Celebration on Sunday, March 24 at 12pm at the Alpert JCC. Please join us and take this opportunity to BE HAPPY!

Lewis Rosenberg was a true gentleman, always there to help anyone

To his grandchildren and family, Lewis Rosenberg was their lovable “Grumps.”

To his patients, the Lakewood resident was a brilliant ophthamologist — an eye doctor who saved their sight. To law enforcement officers, he was a valuable volunteer for decades, always available to help in disasters. To his hundreds of friends and acquaintances, he was simply soft-spoken and modest Lewis, a mensch — a Yiddish word for someone of integrity and honor — and a true gentleman.

To his wife of 61 years, Jill, he was literally a lifesaver, whether on a mountain or on river rapids.

“Lewis gave and gave and gave to help wherever he could,” Jill said. “He was a kind and loving man, a true southern

gentleman. He has left a hole in my heart.”

Besides his wife Jill, Lewis is survived by their children Craig (Amely Wurmbrand) and Paige (David Hirschkop); grandchildren Emma, Ethan, Halle, Brandon and Ryan; his sister, Rosalie Samuelson; brother-in-law and sisterin-law Jack and Diane Schuster; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jill said she was overwhelmed with the outpouring of love from people whose lives Lewis touched in his 86 years on Earth. Gordon Lentzner, next-door neighbor to the Rosenbergs, said Lewis was his best friend and “one of the best men in the world.” Lentzner praised Lewis’ skill as an eye surgeon, saying he had the ability to handle complicated and delicate procedures “where he couldn’t slip a fraction of a fraction.” But, Lentzner said, Lewis was not so good at assembling things.

“One time, he came over with pieces of a hand vacuum and asked me to put it together for him,” Lentzner said with a grin. “It was such an anomaly. He could handle difficult eye surgeries but asked for my help

in putting mechanical things together.”

Dr. Jim Linden, another longtime friend, said Lewis “always had a great twinkle in his eye and a great smile. He was a curious guy, a great reader with a thirst for knowledge. He was a world traveler with Jill.”

Dr. Robert Kaplan said Lewis loved tennis and they played together a lot.

“We would play awhile and then he’d say, ‘Let’s go visit the angels,’ meaning it was time to take a nap,” Kaplan said. “He always took his naps.”

The week Lewis died, Paige said, the family was able to tell him about how much they loved their patriarch — and how “heartbreaking” it would be to lose him.

“We will miss him more than words can express,” Paige said.

Lewis died on Jan. 16.

He left this life to visit the angels.

Dear Community, Kevin O'Grady needs a liver transplant. Kevin, his husband Craig, and their son Asher have been active members of our community for years. Kevin served as an AJCC board member and Executive Director for the Long Beach/Orange County region of ADL, while Craig served as a Jewish Federation board member for many years. Their son, Asher, grew up in our ECE classrooms and as a camper at Camp Komaroff. Kevin has been living with liver disease for quite a while, and now he has reached a point where he needs a transplant, so they are actively searching for a donor. Any help is greatly appreciated for Kevin and his family.

What to Know

Potential donor(s) will be connected directly to Kevin’s doctors at USC Keck Medical Center to be screened. Potential donor(s) will also be connected with a donor advocate. Privacy will be protected in all cases.

The ideal would be to find someone with type O+ blood like Kevin, but there are workarounds. Almost anyone has the potential to be a donor for Kevin. Their insurance will cover the cost.

The liver is an amazing organ and grows back in both the donor (so they don’t lose their liver) and in the recipient (who gains a new and improved liver).

Appreciation for our Volunteers

“The moments that we share our experiences in conversations help mitigate loneliness,” said Emile, a recipient of the Jessie Butler Meal Delivery program. “Volunteers make this a better world.” And we could not agree more.

April is volunteer appreciation month, so we would like to take a moment to thank all the incredible and selfless JCC

Cares volunteers who make so many Jewish Long Beach programs possible. In 2023, our volunteers spent over 1,000 cumulative hours prioritizing Tikkun Olam (healing the world).

In March and April, volunteers will have the opportunity to make special connections with seniors in our community through the Senior Holiday Outreach

program. This is a special tradition where volunteers visit homebound seniors with holiday treats for Purim and Passover. Email me to register to pack or deliver on the mornings of March 19 and April 18.

If you’re ready to give back and make a difference in our community, please reach out to me at athompson@alpertjcc.org

That’s a Wrap on the 20th Long Beach Jewish Film Festival

We are grateful for the over 250 people who joined us in celebrating 20 years of the Long Beach Jewish Film Festival this January. We are especially thankful to our sponsors Rosecarrie & Alan Brooks, Al & Ruth Rudis, Andrea & Don Kaiser, Lois & Phil Wachovsky, Evan Braude & Bonnie Lowenthal, Lauren & Stuart Friedman, Yael Marcus, Beverly August, Jessie Butler, Christine Carson, Rick & Arlene Freeman, Ellen Goldenberg, and the CSULB Department of Jewish Studies for their generosity in supporting the continuation of this meaningful event.

I have had the honor of being the lead staff for the Long Beach Jewish Film Festival for the past four years. This program is one of my favorites to be a part of.

The Festival has a dedicated committee that watches 20-25 films each year and votes on the best five films to share with our community. The Film Festival voting meeting is one of the liveliest meetings of the year. The committee gathers in person to discuss all the films. There are always passionate pitches for many of the films as to why they should or should not be included in the festival. The committee is led by Yael Marcus. As the Chair, she has had the difficult job of working with the committee to find films that educate, entertain, and are in line with the mission of the Festival. This year was no exception – the committee picked five excellent films, plus two additional films for teens and families.

Each year, certain films are awarded the prestigious titles of Best in Festival and Audience Choice. The committee elects the former, and the latter is voted for by festival goers. The committee was proud to name Matchmaking, an Israeli comedy blockbuster, as Best in Festival. Viewers voted for Farewell, Mr. Haffman, a French WWII-era drama, as Audience Choice. One of the things I love most about the Festival is that we have an opportunity to use the power of film to teach history, to

educate, to entertain, and to help create dialogue around difficult subjects. The Festival is also an opportunity to highlight Jewish Life, and Jewish stories from around the world. This gives not only the Jewish community but the greater Long Beach community an opportunity to connect and learn with us.

We hope this year’s Festival left you feeling moved, connected, educated, and wanting more. Thank you for being a part of this yearly tradition of Jewish culture.

Seder Highlights Community

Rabbi Yitzchok Newman | Hebrew Academy

Although most rituals in Judaism take place in the surroundings of the synagogue, the Passover Seder with all of its rich practices is unique. It is celebrated with family and friends around a dining table. No wonder it is the most popular tradition in the Jewish calendar. Having lively conversations with family and friends in a social gathering while munching on Matzah is comforting and strengthens our ties to our community.

In the wake of the October 7th tragedy in Israel, a global wave of support emerged, demonstrating the strength and unity of Jewish communities worldwide. Anticipating the needs of families with children arriving locally from Israel, the Hebrew Academy Board initiated a unique program with the support of Jewish Long Beach to welcome new students from Israel and provide a comprehensive support system for those grappling with the traumatic aftermath.

One family’s story stands out among the families seeking refuge for their children. They enrolled their two children in our elementary school, seeking respite and normalcy after

their harrowing experiences. Their young kindergarten son showed visible signs of distress, finding it challenging to acclimate and forge new friendships. However, the compassion and outreach from his peers, facilitated by our dedicated staff and specialists, soon eased his transition. Witnessing his integration and the return of joy to his and his family’s life was a testament to the power of our school community’s support and care.

This family’s journey back to Israel, strengthened by their experience with us, underscores a profound realization that across the globe there is a vast network of communities that stand ready to offer support. Their gratitude towards Hebrew Academy for providing a supportive community during a turbulent time highlights the far-reaching impact of our collective empathy and action.

There is a passage in the Haggadah that summarizes the Jewish experience at the time of the exodus and throughout the generations. It reads ‘And this principle has stood for our forbearers and us, that not only one antagonist has risen to destroy us but in every generation, they rise up to destroy us and The Holy One Blessed Be He saves us from their hands.’ Our sages refer to the many Jewish communities continued on page 16

HOLIDAY GREETINGS COMMUNITY

Empowering Lives Through Tae Bo®

In the dynamic world of fitness, there are individuals who go beyond the conventional workout routines, bringing a unique blend of energy, discipline, and motivation to their classes. One such individual is Melanie Smuck, who has been certified in Tae Bo® Fitness for 18 years. Melanie has traveled the world with Billy Blanks®; her favorite trip with him was a 12-day tour through Kuwait and Iraq to visit and train with the troops.

Melanie is a dedicated Tae Bo® instructor whose journey is as inspiring as the workout she leads. In Melanie’s own words “I love Tae Bo® because it changed my life; it helped me lose 60 pounds after the birth of my first son. More than the weight lost, I learned that I am powerful, inside, and out. As I trained, my focus changed from trying to meet the world’s beauty standards to becoming the best me possible. Once I let go of other people’s requirements, I was able to grow and decide the woman I wanted to be – and I will spend the rest of my life becoming that woman!”

“I am so grateful to be able to teach

here at the Alpert JCC. It is so rewarding to watch students achieve and surpass their goals, and to do things they never thought possible. The community here is filled with so much love, life, and joy, it is infectious. I feel like I’ve found a home here.”

Recognizing the powerful transformative impact it had on her own life, Melanie decided to share the benefits with others.

As a certified Tae Bo® instructor, Melanie’s classes are not just about physical fitness but also about fostering mental resilience. Her classes seamlessly blend the precision of martial arts with the fluidity of dance, creating an atmosphere where participants not only sweat but also discover a newfound confidence within themselves. Her classes have become a space where people not only burn calories but also build a sense of community.

Melanie’s Tae Bo® classes are held Monday and Friday mornings at 9:30am, Sunday at 9:00am, and Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6:00pm, open to Alpert JCC members.

We will be hosting a Tae Bo®

certification camp March 16 and 17. Billy Blanks and Melanie Smuck will be on site so please join us for a Tae Bo® class Saturday or Sunday morning from 9:00am – 10:00am. Fee for members $25.00, non-members $36.00.

Billy Blanks is the creator of Tae Bo® Fitness, a revolutionary total body fitness system that has helped millions of people around the world get in shape and feel great! Created in the 1980s, Tae Bo® became a pop culture phenomenon with the release of his video workouts. Blanks is a 9th degree black belt in Taekwondo and a world Karate champion, and he spent many years as a personal trainer to the stars. This is an incredible opportunity to learn from a master.

Spring into Fitness with Melanie and the entire fitness team by becoming an Alpert JCC member! New and returning Adult, Couple, and Family Memberships have their registration fee waived ($75 to $150 value) when you sign up by March 31st, 2024, so don’t delay and visit www.alpertjcc.org to schedule a tour and join today!

Academic Excellence, Jewish Pride: Crafting Bright Futures at Hebrew Academy

The sun was just peeking through the clouds as the Hebrew Academy filled with the stirring melody of children singing “I’m Jewish, and I’m Proud.” Angela, standing in the Value Circle, felt a storm of emotions. Each note of the song, so boldly sung by the children, clashed with her memories of Iran, where such an expression was unimaginable. She closed her eyes briefly, her heart gripped by a familiar fear, an instinctive urge to silence her son Omid before the tune reached unwelcome ears. But as she opened her eyes and saw the joy and pride around her, her heart swelled with emotion. Angela found herself not just joining the chorus but actively encouraging it. She cheered them on, her voice growing in strength, her heart praying that her son, Omid, would never know the fears that once silenced her. For her, this song became a declaration of a new life where her family could openly celebrate their Jewish identity.

Driven by a desire for freedom and a better life for her son Omid, Angela and her husband embarked on a journey from Tehran to Orange County. “I didn’t want my son to hide his identity,” she explains, recounting the pressure to convert in Iran and the job discrimination her husband faced. Despite being well aware of the hurdles that awaited them — navigating a new culture, overcoming language barriers, and securing employment and a home — their move to the U.S. was imbued with hope.

Angela recalls with pride how Omid’s journey at the Academy unfolded. As a shy preschooler, he initially communicated through hand gestures, creatively overcoming the challenge of not speaking English. His interaction with Morah Miriam, his kindergarten teacher, was a significant turning point. Addressing his desire to fit in and embarrassment about his mom’s Persian accent, Morah Miriam turned it into a celebration of bilingualism, instilling in Omid a sense of pride in his heritage and a shift that marked the start of his journey towards self-confidence and inclusion.

Angela recalls that the nurturing environment of Hebrew Academy played a pivotal role in Omid’s development. He evolved into a confident and articulate student, effortlessly transitioning to the

GATE program in middle school. His journey continued at Oxford Academy, where he actively engaged in The Rose Project’s Student-to-Student program, sharing his Jewish heritage with high school peers and highlighting the values of tolerance and understanding instilled in him at Hebrew Academy.

As Angela watched Omid’s journey of growth and success at Hebrew Academy, we similarly observed Angela’s inspiring evolution within the school.

Beginning as a classroom aide, her rich background as a credentialed high school chemistry teacher in Iran was always at the forefront. Motivated to lead her classroom again, Angela embraced the challenges and opportunities for growth. Her determination led her to achieve her California teaching credentials in Middle and High school math, a noteworthy accomplishment. At the school, Angela’s joy and connection with her students, some of whom she first met in first grade, are genuinely heartwarming. Her bright smile, vibrant energy, and good-natured humor reflect her profound bond and positive impact on her students.

For Angela’s younger daughter, 4th grader Ariana, born in America, Hebrew Academy has been instrumental in cultivating her sense of self and connection to her Jewish roots. Angela is proud of how the school’s teachings have shaped Ariana into a confident young girl who loves Shabbat, the Torah, and her friends.

“Investing in our children’s education at Hebrew Academy is investing in their future,” Angela asserts with genuine conviction. Her aspirations for Omid and Ariana extend beyond academic success to encompass their complete well-being and a deeply rooted Jewish identity. “For

me,” she adds, her smile reflecting a mix of gratitude and resolve, “giving back to this community that embraced us so warmly is a privilege.”

Affectionately known as “Teacher Angela” within the school, she is a living example of the transformative power of perseverance and dedication. Reflecting on her experience, she shares, “This community is unique – it celebrates our triumphs and supports us through our challenges.” Her journey, entwined with the lives of her family and students, powerfully illustrates the impact of an education beyond textbooks.

Looking towards the future with optimism, Angela highlights, “At Hebrew Academy, we are building something special – not just nurturing academic excellence, but also cultivating a hopeful, vibrant Jewish future. It’s a place where every child feels valued and connected to a larger purpose”.

Get to Know Lenore “Bubbie” Roth

Tell us about yourself:

My name is Lenore, but the students call me “Bubbie Roth.” My grandchildren went to the Alpert JCC ECE. I moved to Long Beach from the Valley in 2014 to be closer to my grandchildren. In our ECE Judaic Studio, I create provocations that revolve around current Jewish holidays or concepts. I use flannel board stories, books, props, and songs appropriate to each age group. We learn the significance of each holiday, why we celebrate or acknowledge them, and how we can incorporate these teachings into our daily lives.

What was your journey to the J?

I picked up my grandkids and I fell in love

with the J. When I walked in, I literally said, “I’m going to work here.” I was hired in December 2015.

What do you love the most about the J?

The sense of Mishpachot (family) and diversity that surrounds the J. The members, my coworkers, and the families.

How long have you been an educator?

Since 1975. I have taught every age group in early childhood from Toddlers to Pre-K!

What do you love most about your role?

I love it when I hear that the children go home and share their learning experience that they had with me, with their family. I also love spending time with them in the Judaic room, creating new experiences for them to explore. I have many special bonds with our families and children in the ECE, and I love seeing them at events. It’s the best feeling in the world!

What other roles do you have at the J?

I help with senior lunch every other Wednesday and the children join me in singing with the seniors with the Barbara Alpert singing group. The seniors love it when we get to join them! I am an active volunteer with Jewish life and culture programs, and I love helping the teachers get our kiddos to sleep during nap time. I absolutely love what I do. I am blessed to have the ability to impact lives daily.
