Peoplehood is the heart of what we do Erik Ludwig, PhD | Jewish Long Beach Dear Friends, At the heart of Jewish life is a powerful and enduring idea: we are a people. Not simply a collection of individuals or a network of institutions, but a living community bound together by shared history, shared responsibility, and a shared future. In my experience, this idea of peoplehood is what gives Jewish life its strength and meaning. It is foundational to Jewish Long Beach and animates everything we do, because everyone belongs at Jewish Long Beach.

Peoplehood is not accidental. When I reflect on the communities that endure, I see that it is always a conscious choice to remain connected across generations, to honor the many cultural and religious heritages that shape us, and to show up for one another as part of something larger than ourselves. It means understanding that what affects one of us affects all of us. Our wellbeing, our safety, our joy, and our future are intertwined. Peoplehood reminds us that community is not transactional. It is relational.

At Jewish Long Beach, I see peoplehood come to life every day through learning, connection, and collaboration. Our partnerships with synagogues, schools, and community agencies strengthen relationships, expand access, and create meaningful entry points into Jewish life for individuals and families at every stage.

Peoplehood begins early. When I spend time in our Early Childhood Education Center, I see toddlers and preschoolers learning and growing in a nurturing, value-

driven environment that sparks curiosity, compassion, and a sense of community. I know that same spirit exists at Camp Komaroff, where children build lifelong friendships and explore their identities. These experiences create memories that shape how young people understand Jewish life for years to come.

As our community grows, so does its leadership. Many of our leaders have participated in the Alpert New Leaders Forum and the Lentzner Fellows program. The energy and commitment they bring to our community are contagious. Investing in leadership is one of the most powerful ways we ensure a strong and vibrant future for Jewish Long Beach.

Peoplehood is also found in the small, joyful moments that often matter most. As a PJ Library family, I have seen how connection often begins at home. Nearly 500 local families receive PJ Library books each month, sharing stories, asking questions, and creating rituals together. We are building belonging one page at a time.

In a time when so many feel isolated or divided, Jewish Long Beach stands as a place of belonging, connection, and care. I am deeply grateful to be part of a community that chooses responsibility for one another and lives out the promise of peoplehood each day. Together, we will continue to ensure that Jewish Long Beach remains a place where everyone belongs.

Lynne Kass Memorial Fund: Founding Contributors

Continuing a legacy of love, community, and leadership Our entire Jewish Long Beach community mourns the passing of Lynne Kass, a cherished leader and dear friend to all.

Lynne was a frequent contributor to the Chronicle, Past President of the Alpert JCC from 2009-11, recipient of the 2025 Robert Baldwin Service Award, and 2026 Presidentelect of Jewish Long Beach. She devoted her life to her family, strengthening Jewish life, fostering connection, and guiding with wisdom and compassion.

She is survived by her husband Jonathan, and children Sar (Liz), Gillian, and Max. She is also survived by her brother William Bruederlein (Beth).

Lynne represented our truest goal as an agency, to be an open tent to all who seek it.

Her first introduction to the center was in 1996, when she attended a Mommy & Me class at our very own Early Childhood Education (ECE) Center with her firstborn.

That experience paved the way for over two decades of volunteer service, community building, and Jewish connection. In her own words, as written in the March/April 2021 Chronicle, “The Alpert JCC and Federation became our second home — [where] I learned to sing HaMotzi, made Purim Parade decorations, and picked out Passover Haggadot.” Unique Jewish Journeys like Lynne’s are a powerful reminder of Jewish Long Beach’s deep-rooted purpose of promoting Jewish values and empowering community.

As the President-elect of Jewish Long Beach, she had already begun to chart a course for the organization’s continued growth and strength. While her leadership will be deeply missed, the values and energy she instilled in those around her ensure that the organization remains strong. New leadership is at the ready, and the next steps forward are grounded in the solid foundation she helped build.

To honor Lynne's unparalleled dedication, a memorial fund has been established in her name, which will be utilized to infuse the warmth of her legacy into the way we host members and guests on our Weinberg Campus. This warmth and intentionality will enable the next generation of leaders to find their second home, in our shared community. It is the profound honor of Jewish Long Beach to continue to carry on Lynne’s values thanks to the support of the fund’s founding contributors.

Each mitzvah (act of kindness), big or small, has the power to lift up the community. Middle and high school students in the greater Long Beach area were prompted to write a reflective essay or story exploring how small acts of kindness spark change and brighten the world.

Below are the 1st place high school and middle school entries. Congratulations to all 35 participants!

1st Place – High School Sharing the Joy of Judaism Shulamis Kantor, 12th Grade "A soul may descend to this world and live seventy or eighty years, in order to do a Jew a material favor, and certainly a spiritual one” (Schneerson). Ever since the beginning of time, people have been endowed with the ability to help others. In fact, just as it is a service for the receiver, it also benefits the giver. As Jewish tradition teaches, the Hebrew word "Tzedaka," commonly mistranslated as "charity," actually means righteousness. Charity suggests that the person is doing more than expected, which can easily lead to a feeling of smug selfsatisfaction. Tzedaka, however, acknowledges that our money does not belong to us; it comes from G-d.

Accordingly, He entrusted it to us solely as a deposit to contribute to others. So it is called Tzedaka because it is the proper thing to do (Kalmenson and Abraham). With every act of kindness, we can thank the Creator that we are on the giving side. In addition to aiding others physically, by supplying shelter or meals, we can also assist spiritually, by motivating people to connect to G-d through an action-based mitzvah.

Inviting others to do mitzvahs has enabled me to stretch myself, make others cheerful, and unite the community.

My journey of reaching out was a struggle, but the barriers made my experience richer. It was afternoon on the second day of Sukkos.

My sister urged us to go out and offer other Jews the option to shake Lulav and Esrog, a special mitzvah that can only be done six days a year. Nevertheless, I was unsure. I had so many justifications why I was exempt.

Particularly, it was far out of my comfort zone to knock on people's doors, some of whom were the only thing we knew was that they were Jewish. I reasoned that this job should be left for the bold and assertive. After reflection, I realized that the responsibility of reaching out is not limited to outgoing, lively people; it is a mandate for everyone to uplift others. Just being kind when it is convenient for me is selfish. True compassion is about going beyond and extending myself towards others, even when it is unpleasant. So I decided to join my sisters and gained a lot from the experience. Ultimately, proceeding from a place of stretching made my experience so much more valuable and was the greatest contribution I could make to myself and others.

Moreover, facilitating Mitzvah moments sparked joy in individuals' lives. First, that day, we set out with a list of a broad variety of people to visit. On the itinerary were people we deeply knew; some homebound but eager to engage, and some of whom our only knowledge of them was an address and the fact that they were Jewish. The first woman we visited was especially touched and conveyed the happiness this connection brought. She lost her husband a few months before and was lonely--we were able to deliver light. Next, we knocked on the door of a family with two little kids. When we told them why we came, they could not wait to have the chance to shake the Lulav and Esrog.

Jumping up and down with anticipation, they were filled with pure joy. The children were empowered by the power they had at such a young age. Judaism is alive now, not just something for them to take part in when they

grow up. In other words, it was immediately clear how quickly and how simply it was to bring genuine delight to others. Thus, pleasure was brought by sharing Mitzvahs.

Furthermore, besides linking people with G-d, mitzvah opportunities unite the community. There are so many different kinds of Jews with different opinions and interests, but one thing binds us together: our Jewish identity. To illustrate, one of the families we popped by recommended that we go to their neighbor down the block, who was also Jewish and recently diagnosed.

After doing the mitzvah with her, we chatted for a bit. While conversing with her, she noted with a sigh that it had been a tough year. Automatically, I assumed that she was referring to her struggle with cancer.

Instead, she continued by expressing how painful the situation in Israel was. It struck me how remarkable it was that her primary suffering was what her people were going through, that the core of her soul was kindled and brought to the center of her consciousness, regardless that she had not seemingly been in touch with her heritage and people. In NYC, Cambodia, and Sydney, Jews are doing the same Mitzvah at the same time. Contemplating this idea joins us.

Indeed, every Jew's personal deed is needed, and every Mitzvah rises together. As a result, doing Mitzvahs unites people across the globe.

In the final analysis, my process of sharing mitzvahs with others took me out of my comfort zone, brightened the lives of community members, and brought connection. I learned how my minute acts and decisions can make a considerable impact on others. Moving forward, I will continue to inspire more Jews about the beauty of their inheritance. As the Rambam declared about the power of one good deed, “If he performs one Mitzvah, he tips his balance and that of the entire world to the side of merit and brings deliverance and salvation to himself and others” (Maimonides)

1st Place - Middle School Just be Kind: It’s Louder Than You Think Emery Grajeda, 7th Grade Mitzvot are something that make our lives brighter, but today our world isn't as bright as it used to be. Although I'm only 13 and in 7th grade, I know this. If everyone did a mitzvah a day, our world could physically change. It's not just a feeling—you can see the difference. It's in the way people don't look up from their phones when they walk, or how quiet the bus can be even when it's full. But I really believe we aren't stuck like this. I think we all have this power, this little switch inside us, and every mitzvah is like flipping it on.

I saw my proof in the last place anyone looks for drama—my school library. It's my favorite spot to hide during lunch. But this year, it started to feel... tired. All the popular books had cracked spines and pages filled with doodles in the margins. It was like even the stories were getting worn out. Then one Tuesday, I saw it. Sitting on the returns cart was a brand-new copy of a book from a series everyone loves. A sticky note on the cover said, "This got me through a rough week. Hope it helps you too. Pass it on."

I remember just staring at it. That book was like a lit match in our dim library.

And get this—the spark actually caught.

The next week, two more new books showed up. Then someone left a box of handmade bookmarks by the checkout desk. And then, the best part—someone took all the charging cables for the laptop cart, which were always a huge tangled mess, and organized them with these little twisty ties. It was like one person's small decision to be kind started this quiet chain reaction. It made me realize that light is weird—you can give it away to everyone, but you never end up with less for yourself.

Now, I know what some adults might say: "That's sweet, but it won't fix the big problems." And yeah, a new book won't stop a war. But I think they're missing the point.

It's not about fixing everything at once. It's about building what my mom calls "pockets of light"—places where things are okay, where people remember how to be good to each other. Because when you're used to seeing kindness in the library, you start expecting it in the cafeteria. And when you see it there, you might try it on the bus. A community that's practiced at small kindnesses is a community that won't fall apart when a big problem comes along.

So if one new book can change the vibe of a whole library, imagine what we could all do together. Our school would look totally different. The courtyard wouldn't be that concrete patch we rush through—it would be a place where people actually want to hang out, with flowers that actually get watered.

The bus stop would have one of those Little Free Libraries that's never empty, and the bench would be covered in paintings by kids in art class. The hallways would have encouraging notes stuck to lockers. You'd be able to feel the difference, like the air itself was lighter and easier to breathe.

The amazing part is how simple it is to start. A mitzvah can be as easy as holding the door when someone's arms are full of books. It's picking up a dropped assignment and returning it with a smile. It's texting a friend who missed school to say, "I saved notes for you." It's choosing to really listen when someone shares something difficult, instead of just waiting for your turn to talk.

It's so easy to stand around in the dark and talk about how everything is terrible.

The braver thing is to be the one who strikes a match. That one book in the library didn't solve all our problems. It just lit up one small corner. And honestly? That was enough to get the rest of us started. So let's be the generation that floods this place with so much light that the darkness has to pack its bags and leave. Let's light up our world, one small act at a time.

Evelyn Linden Baldwin Evelyn Linden Baldwin was a beloved leader in the Long Beach community. Born in Cincinnati, she lived most of her life in Detroit until she moved to California in 1982. Shortly after moving to Long Beach, Shelley Carl and Rabbi Wolli Kaelter arranged a “shiddach” between Evelyn and Bob Baldwin, whom she married and spent a beautiful ten years until Bob passed away in 1992. Evelyn was a social worker by training and supported her love of Judaism, education, and Israel. She left a legacy of kindness, humility, and intellect to the community. She would be proud to know the lasting impact she has made, along with her children, Jim and Russ, and grandchildren, Seth, Ari, Becca, and Josh, all of whom continue to teach and support her values of Judaism, education, and community building.

Jumping up and down with anticipation, they were filled with pure joy. The children were empowered by the power they had at such a young age. Judaism is alive now, not just something for them to take part in when they

grow up. In other words, it was immediately clear how quickly and how simply it was to bring genuine delight to others. Thus, pleasure was brought by sharing Mitzvahs.

Furthermore, besides linking people with G-d, mitzvah opportunities unite the community. There are so many different kinds of Jews with different opinions and interests, but one thing binds us together: our Jewish identity. To illustrate, one of the families we popped by recommended that we go to their neighbor down the block, who was also Jewish and recently diagnosed.

After doing the mitzvah with her, we chatted for a bit. While conversing with her, she noted with a sigh that it had been a tough year. Automatically, I assumed that she was referring to her struggle with cancer.

Instead, she continued by expressing how painful the situation in Israel was. It struck me how remarkable it was that her primary suffering was what her people were going through, that the core of her soul was kindled and brought to the center of her consciousness, regardless that she had not seemingly been in touch with her heritage and people. In NYC, Cambodia, and Sydney, Jews are doing the same Mitzvah at the same time. Contemplating this idea joins us.

Indeed, every Jew's personal deed is needed, and every Mitzvah rises together. As a result, doing Mitzvahs unites people across the globe.

In the final analysis, my process of sharing mitzvahs with others took me out of my comfort zone, brightened the lives of community members, and brought connection. I learned how my minute acts and decisions can make a considerable impact on others. Moving forward, I will continue to inspire more Jews about the beauty of their inheritance. As the Rambam declared about the power of one good deed, “If he performs one Mitzvah, he tips his balance and that of the entire world to the side of merit and brings deliverance and salvation to himself and others” (Maimonides)

1st Place - Middle School Just be Kind: It’s Louder Than You Think Emery Grajeda, 7th Grade Mitzvot are something that make our lives brighter, but today our world isn't as bright as it used to be. Although I'm only 13 and in 7th grade, I know this. If everyone did a mitzvah a day, our world could physically change. It's not just a feeling—you can see the difference. It's in the way people don't look up from their phones when they walk, or how quiet the bus can be even when it's full. But I really believe we aren't stuck like this. I think we all have this power, this little switch inside us, and every mitzvah is like flipping it on.

I saw my proof in the last place anyone looks for drama—my school library. It's my favorite spot to hide during lunch. But this year, it started to feel... tired. All the popular books had cracked spines and pages filled with doodles in the margins. It was like even the stories were getting worn out. Then one Tuesday, I saw it. Sitting on the returns cart was a brand-new copy of a book from a series everyone loves. A sticky note on the cover said, "This got me through a rough week. Hope it helps you too. Pass it on."

I remember just staring at it. That book was like a lit match in our dim library.

And get this—the spark actually caught.

The next week, two more new books showed up. Then someone left a box of handmade bookmarks by the checkout desk. And then, the best part—someone took all the charging cables for the laptop cart, which were always a huge tangled mess, and organized them with these little twisty ties. It was like one person's small decision to be kind started this quiet chain reaction. It made me realize that light is weird—you can give it away to everyone, but you never end up with less for yourself.

Now, I know what some adults might say: "That's sweet, but it won't fix the big problems." And yeah, a new book won't stop a war. But I think they're missing the point.

It's not about fixing everything at once. It's about building what my mom calls "pockets of light"—places where things are okay, where people remember how to be good to each other. Because when you're used to seeing kindness in the library, you start expecting it in the cafeteria. And when you see it there, you might try it on the bus. A community that's practiced at small kindnesses is a community that won't fall apart when a big problem comes along.

So if one new book can change the vibe of a whole library, imagine what we could all do together. Our school would look totally different. The courtyard wouldn't be that concrete patch we rush through—it would be a place where people actually want to hang out, with flowers that actually get watered.

The bus stop would have one of those Little Free Libraries that's never empty, and the bench would be covered in paintings by kids in art class. The hallways would have encouraging notes stuck to lockers. You'd be able to feel the difference, like the air itself was lighter and easier to breathe.

The amazing part is how simple it is to start. A mitzvah can be as easy as holding the door when someone's arms are full of books. It's picking up a dropped assignment and returning it with a smile. It's texting a friend who missed school to say, "I saved notes for you." It's choosing to really listen when someone shares something difficult, instead of just waiting for your turn to talk.

It's so easy to stand around in the dark and talk about how everything is terrible.

The braver thing is to be the one who strikes a match. That one book in the library didn't solve all our problems. It just lit up one small corner. And honestly? That was enough to get the rest of us started. So let's be the generation that floods this place with so much light that the darkness has to pack its bags and leave. Let's light up our world, one small act at a time.

Evelyn Linden Baldwin Evelyn Linden Baldwin was a beloved leader in the Long Beach community. Born in Cincinnati, she lived most of her life in Detroit until she moved to California in 1982. Shortly after moving to Long Beach, Shelley Carl and Rabbi Wolli Kaelter arranged a “shiddach” between Evelyn and Bob Baldwin, whom she married and spent a beautiful ten years until Bob passed away in 1992. Evelyn was a social worker by training and supported her love of Judaism, education, and Israel. She left a legacy of kindness, humility, and intellect to the community. She would be proud to know the lasting impact she has made, along with her children, Jim and Russ, and grandchildren, Seth, Ari, Becca, and Josh, all of whom continue to teach and support her values of Judaism, education, and community building.

REFLECTIONS

The Love of Nature and Trees Rabbi Nancy Myers | Beth David I’m most at peace when I’m outside. I love the swell of the ocean waves, the perspective I get on top of a mountain, the beauty of my flowering plants, and viewing different kinds of plants and trees. I have steadily been planting more trees on my property and now in my backyard, I have a lime tree (aka, the cocktail tree) and Meyer lemon, fig, peach, & apricot trees. We are so blessed to live in Southern California where we can grow such variety of vegetation.

Maybe I spend too much time looking at the screen of my phone or computer, but when I’m outside appreciating nature, I feel recharged. This is why I seek opportunities to be outside and appreciate the beauty of our world. There is no doubt that we need more time to leave our buildings and vehicles and to marvel at the beauty of God’s world. I think our stress will lessen a bit, if we can do so.

Fortunately, we have a minor holiday in Judaism that is designed to connect us with nature and more specifically with trees. On Monday, February 2, we will celebrate Tu Bishevat, the New Year for the trees. The name is actually its Hebrew date that translates as the 15th day of Shevat. In the Talmud, the

rabbis believed that trees are judged on this day. Hopefully with enough rainfall, they will blossom in the spring and produce healthy fruit in the summer. The mystics liked to view Tu BiShevat as an opportunity to connect with the changing seasons, fertility, and God. For modern Zionists, it’s a chance to plant a tree in Israel, as our pioneers did, in transforming the desert into the flourishing country it is today.

So here’s how I like to celebrate the New Year for the trees. I always plant a tree or two in Israel through the Jewish National Fund.

They are $18 dollars and you can do it in honor or memory of anyone, even a beloved pet. I also put almonds, dried apricots, dates, figs, and olives on my kitchen table to have a taste of Israel. And if I have time, I plant something new on my property. For sure, on the Sunday night prior to Tu Bishevat, I’ll be gazing at the sky and hopefully seeing the full moon of Shevat.

Planting trees is so important to our world and integral to Judaism itself. In Avot deRabbi Natan, we learn that if a sapling is in your hand, and you are told that the Messiah has come, first plant the sapling, then go out to greet the Messiah. In other words, there is nothing more important than taking the time to plant a tree and, by doing so, we root ourselves in the land of Israel and in our tradition.

There is so much beauty in our world.

There are so many reason to celebrate life, our world, and the incredible trees surrounding us. May your Tu Bishevat be delightful and meaningful.

The following question may sound trivial but it’s absolutely legitimate: What was the goal of all of that, of all that conquest? First, the goal was to create something we would now describe as a Jewish state a separate and independent political entity, ruled by the Divine laws of the Torah. That’s why - and it is stated in the Torah many times - the land, the Promised land was given to us on the condition that it will be governed by the laws of the Torah. But that was not the end goal actually here but an intermediate one. The end goal was to establish the Jewish state governed by the Torah and then grow it into some sort of empire, a completely new civilization between two existing ones at that time Egypt and Babylon - that would outlast them for thousands of years.

Igniting Dreams Through Scholarships

Vicki Scherwin, PhD | Chair, Jewish Long Beach Grants Committee Opening Doors, Changing Lives In 2025, Jewish Long Beach awarded 120 scholarships. These camperships (scholarships for summer camp) and travel grants empower youth and young adults to embark on journeys of discovery, such as sleepaway camp, educational adventures and meaningful travel to Israel.

The Ripple Effect of Opportunity The true impact of these scholarships is best captured in the voices of families who benefited directly: “She loved going to Jewish camp this summer! She made so many new friends and enjoyed the activities, especially Shabbat services and singing together.

She learned more about Jewish traditions and felt proud to be part of a strong and welcoming community.”

“She got to connect with her roots and volunteer in the country that she loves so much. This built a love of Israel and a chance to meet October 7th survivors to understand the importance of standing together. Incredible experience for her and our family.”

When You Know the Ending, You Choose Differently.

Mr. Allen Alevy didn’t grow up with privilege.

He grew up in the projects, a kid who was chased, cornered, and beaten for being a Jew. His mother’s message to him was simple: don’t run from who you are. It definitely wasn’t easy to hold onto that when the world told him to hide.

Years later, when he had children of his own, he made a decision many parents in Orange County hesitated to make at the time: he chose a Jewish day school education.

Not because it was convenient.

Not because it was affordable; it wasn’t.

Not because the school had a long history; it didn’t yet.

He chose it because he understood something most young parents only realize much later: Your children’s identity isn’t built at 18, and they are off to college. It’s built at 3, 5, 7, 11… in the small moments that shape who they become.

He chose it because he knew the ending he wanted for his family.

And he says it best: “I’m not a benefactor of the school. The school is a benefactor to me.”

Today, Mr. Alevy has over 50 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, many of them enrolled right here at the Hebrew Academy, the school he trusted when it was still a new venture for the community. The same school he continues to invest in, so the next generation can stand stronger than he did, without ever having to run.

He calls Jewish education a compass, because it points a child toward what matters most: values, purpose, identity, and belonging.

“If you lived your life backwards,” shares Mr. Alevy, “you’d know exactly what to choose at the beginning. We plan our retirements. We build portfolios. We put money into 401(k)s and investments, but the investment that shapes our grandchildren, and their children, happens far earlier.”

That’s the truth he wants every young parent to understand: Jewish education is the one investment that guarantees a Jewish future. And that future begins earlier than we think.

This edition features our favorite bread - challah! Challah is a braided loaf of bread that is central to Jewish traditions. It is eaten for Shabbat, which comes every Friday after sundown, and holiday meals. The bread is given a blessing before being eaten, usually being ripped apart or sliced.

Challah Recipe 5 teaspoons instant yeast 2 cup warm water 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup oil

2 teaspoon salt 2 egg 8 cups bread flour

1. In bowl add yeast and water, add sugar and let stand for 2 minutes 2. Add oil and egg - mix well 3. Add salt and 2 cups of the flour and mix 4. Slowly add the rest of the flour 5. As mixture becomes stiff, use floured hands and begin kneading 6. Knead for 7-8 min 7. Let rise in a greased bowl until double in size - about 1 hour 8. Punch down dough 9. Separate a small piece of dough and say “harei zo challah” (This is challah), then burn it 10. Divide dough, braid and shape 11. Place on a greased baking sheet, Allow to rise again for about 30 mins 12. Preheat oven to 375 degrees 13. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with desired toppings 14. Bake 30-40 mins until brown 15. Remove from pan and cool on rack
