UPDATE FROM JEWISH FEDERATION IN THE HEART OF NJ • SUMMER 2022 SERVING MONMOUTH & GREATER MIDDLESEX COUNTIES

Dear Friends and Supporters, Trees shade us from the hot summer sun. They make our air healthier to breathe and the ground beneath us more stable. Playmates and beautifiers, providers of food and habitats, trees are multi-taskers, sure and strong — not unlike Jewish Federation. Considering the many critical ways in which Federation bolsters our community’s ability to care for those in need, inspire and empower young people to build a bright Jewish future, and partner with peace-minded allies to protect against manifestations of antisemitism, it is no wonder you choose to plant seeds for a better world through your valued Federation contributions. We are pleased to shed light on the work your support makes possible and THANK YOU for investing in the many ways we make a difference together. To our strong and beautiful Jewish community, Susan Antman Executive Director

Cheryl Markbreiter President

YOUR DOLLAR BUYS MORE THAN A DOLLAR OF IMPACT

Giving to Jewish Federation’s Annual Campaign does more than pass donations through to beneficiaries. Federation pools and leverages your dollars to multiply the impact you make across multiple fronts. While the true return on saving lives, providing hope, and catalyzing positive change for today and tomorrow cannot be measured in dollars, Federation donors can be sure their contributions often generate as much as 10, 20, 30 times or more of their dollar value in programs, services, resources, and impact. For example: INVESTED GENERATED $ 270,000 $9M in security upgrades $ 650,000 $16.5M in legacy gifts for 10+ organizations $ 00 5,000 $100K matching funds for Holocaust survivors $250K to fill shortfall in Holocaust survivor aid $ 25,000 $3M+ in PJ Library books & programs $ 431,000 $2.5M endowment securing PJ Library $ 20,000

TOGETHER, WE ARE MULTI-TASKING... FOR SAFETY AND SECURITY

With rising hate-based threats, Jewish Federation in the Heart of NJ is the organization providing access to: • risk assessments • application guidance for government grants • planning • grant implementation support for making improvements • training • relationships with law enforcement from the FBI to local police • emergency alerts In six years, Federation helped increase Federal and state nonprofit security grant funding by more than 1,200%, bring more than $9 million for enhancements, provide training for more than 600 leaders, and more.

TOGETHER, WE ARE MULTI-TASKING... TO ADDRESS GROWING ANTISEMITISM

We are not likely to wipe out antisemitism, but we will keep pushing back on it in hopes, one day, every Jew lives in peace and safety, free from bias and harm. Among Federation’s work: • When antisemitism showed up at Rutgers, we had the relationships with university officials to intervene. • Anti-BDS laws were pivotal in negotiations surrounding Ben & Jerry’s in Israel. Our advocacy helped pass NJ’s Anti-BDS law. • Our Seeing Human series builds awareness and multi-cultural allies against hate. • Our six-part training series prepared delegates to advocate in D.C. • Neighborhood/synagogue briefings increase awareness and preparedness. • We partner with NJ Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness, State Police, and Attorney General’s Office; County Prosecutors; and others.

TOGETHER, WE ARE MULTI-TASKING... FOR OUR CHILDREN’S FUTURE

Do you hope our children and grandchildren will have positive Jewish identity, values, and connections to community and Israel throughout their lives? Federation Youth Initiatives foster joyful ways for young people to make their Jewish ties their own. This year: • 132 kids and teens got grants for Jewish camp and Israel travel programs. • 3,400+ children under 12 made happy Jewish memories with PJ Library. • 200 teens learned it feels good to do good through J-SERVE. One recipient of a Federation-funded Jewish camp incentive grant several years ago was so impacted by his experience that he made his bar mitzvah project a golf fundraiser, so more kids who might not think of trying Jewish sleepaway could find out how great it is. “Camp gave me lots of strong, possibly lifelong connections with friends that understand me for me.That’s a special bond that you can only get from very few places.” Sam

TOGETHER, WE ARE MULTI-TASKING... FOR THOSE WHO ARE VULNERABLE

Federation bolsters our community’s ability to care for those in need. • When storms destroyed elderly residents’ apartments, our aid augmented the Jewish communal safety net. • In Ukraine, Jewish community infrastructure, built with decades of your local Federation Annual Campaign contributions, serves as the launch pad for emergency aid: o 538 tons medical and hygiene supplies, clothes, and food o 250,000 people served meals o 18,000 helped to make Aliyah o 120,000 given healthcare o 400,000 hotline calls o 80,000 evacuated • We secured an additional $100,000 in matching funds for trauma-informed care for 244 local Holocaust survivors — above our $154,000+ already provided. • Our advocacy influenced NJ’s FY23 budget increase of 30% for Holocaust survivors and the first increase for day school students with learning differences since the 2007-8 school year.

TOGETHER, WE ARE MULTI-TASKING... FOR NEEDS NO SINGLE ORGANIZATION CAN TACKLE ALONE

• NEWS: Federation is convening the community to collaborate on Jewish lifestyle magazine, Jlife, to ensure the new news source — set to launch by early 2023 — serves everyone’s needs. • CEMETERIES: Who makes sure abandoned and bankrupt Jewish cemeteries receive proper care? Federation helped the community form a consortium to ensure this mitzvah is fulfilled in perpetuity. • ENDOWMENTS: Nonprofits without endowments are at financial risk — but learning to cultivate legacy giving takes resources. Federation brought in free training for all Jewish organizations. “Federation brought the Life & Legacy program to us. It meant we could focus on what we want to do in the future and create a more viable congregation. The program provided us with the professionalism we didn’t have, and gave us an incentive to keep ourselves going. Because of Life & Legacy, we can support our congregation in a much more effective manner.” J.W., Congregation B’nai Israel, Rumson
