A Message From Our Board Chair and Our President & CEO
This past year has been like no other — a year that has tested the Dallas Jewish community’s collective strength in ways we could hardly have imagined. The events of October 7 marked a moment in our history that devastated us but left us determined to renew and rebuild. We have been deeply wounded but have never been stronger. In the aftermath, we have found fresh purpose and solidarity, made possible by our community’s remarkable strength and spirit of resilience.
Together, we have proven that adversity does not isolate us but, in fact, draws us closer, weaving our individual strengths into an indomitable collective force in the Dallas community. Looking ahead, we are steadfast in our commitment to our mission of creating a more vital and more vibrant Jewish community in Dallas, Israel, and throughout the world — undeterred by the shadows of attack. We are motivated by the incredible strength we have witnessed and know that we can make a difference together. Our resolve to push forward and to serve and bolster Israel and global Jewry is unshaken. We choose hope over despair, focusing on the future and how we can help locally and abroad.
We are proud to have raised nearly $18 million this year through our Annual Community and Israel Emergency Campaigns. Additionally, we helped secure $1.5 million in FEMA grants for 12 community agencies. Our lobbying efforts in Austin have resulted in state funding to secure Texas nonprofits, and our collaboration with local and national law enforcement, elected officials, and the offices of Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Dallas Mayor Eric L. Johnson have ensured steadfast support for the Jewish community both in Dallas and Israel.
We will continue to raise the funds necessary to meet the urgent new needs of the community. We will work with the federal and state governments to secure funding for local Jewish agencies so we can be Jewish safely in day care centers, preschools, community centers, and places of worship in light of our new reality. We will tie the bonds of kinship even tighter between our home in Dallas and our homeland in Israel through our longstanding ties with Western Galilee and our new partnership with Kibbutz Zikim as we help them move forward after being devastated by acts of terrorism.
We will continue to connect and serve North Texans so that the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas (JFGD) is best positioned to deliver on every word of our mission, fund every qualified request, protect our community, and serve in partnership with more than 85 Jewish agencies whose work we so proudly celebrate and invest in to meet the pressing needs awaiting us in the remainder of 2024 and beyond.
We look forward to forging ahead, shoulder to shoulder, with renewed purpose for the future. Let us amplify messages of hope, resilience, and unity, for it is together that we will write the next chapter of our story. We invite you to read through this report and join us in our mission as we write history together — words of hope and healing in the darkest of times.

On the first evening of the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas’ solidarity mission to Israel in February 2024, the group gathered at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, a site steeped in historical and spiritual significance. This poignant moment served as a powerful anchor, uniting the participants through a shared sense of tradition and faith. Despite the shadow of recent tragedies, Jewish Dallas showed up, committed to reconnecting with our heritage, fostering communal bonds, and reaffirming our ties to the homeland. |

In the wake of the tragic events of October 7, The Jewish Federations of North America (The Federation) have worked tirelessly on the ground in Israel, providing essential support to those in need. The Federation has been instrumental in distributing basic necessities such as food, water, medical supplies, and shelter to affected communities. This vital humanitarian effort is made possible solely through generous donations from individuals — and the incredible generosity of the Dallas community allowed us to contribute almost $4.5 million to these efforts.

“I
swore never to be silent whenever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. ... Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere. When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant. Whenever men and women are prosecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place must — at that moment — become the center of the universe.”

Elie Wiesel, Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech
During the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas’ 2024 solidarity mission, 48 Dallasites came together to bear witness to the devastation following the attacks of Hamas — the largest such mission to Israel since the October 7 attacks. This poignant image, captured by a member of our group, serves as a powerful reminder of the brutality and devastation that occurred on that day. One location the group visited was Kfar Aza, a kibbutz in southern Israel located between Netivot and Sderot, just five kilometers east of Gaza. Walking through the kibbutz, the group’s steps were heavy with the unbearable pain that lingered in the air. Each house they passed seemed to whisper stories of lost potential and the deep recognition of the loss of family. Yet, amid the sorrow, a small sticker on one of the doors caught their eyes: “V’ahavta — and you shall love.” Against a backdrop of tragedy, this simple message stood as a beacon of hope, love, and acceptance. It reminds us that even in the darkest times, the human spirit has the capacity to heal and rebuild, fostering a future where love triumphs over despair.
Together in Mourning: The Community’s Response
The October 10, 2023, communitywide solidarity gathering was a powerful demonstration of the Dallas community’s unity, resilience, and unwavering resolve. Elected officials, including Senator Ted Cruz and Dallas Mayor Eric L. Johnson, joined faith leaders and people across religious communities to fill Temple Emanu-El in support of Israel. The city of Dallas announced a significant proclamation during the gathering, highlighting its commitment to solidarity with the people of Israel. This gathering consisted of more than 3,000 people and was sold out online and in person, standing as one of the largest such gatherings in recent history.
In the face of an attack intended to shatter our spirit, our community’s resolve has only grown stronger. The Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas pledged to take decisive action, ensuring our unwavering presence as vigilant upstanders. This steadfast commitment to fostering unity and making a difference is not only palpable, but also serves as a beacon of hope. It reminds us that we will never give up, no matter the challenges we face.
“Texas has long been a friend and ally of Israel, and we support Israel’s right to defend its land and people. Companies that do business with the state of Texas should keep that in mind.”
— Comptroller Glenn Hegar
The Community Relations & Public Affairs Department at the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas worked with local business leaders to illuminate the Dallas skyline in vibrant blue on the night of Wednesday, October 11, 2023, in a grand, Texas-style show of support for Israel following the brutal attacks just days before. This remarkable display of solidarity saw multiple downtown Dallas skyscrapers, including the iconic Bank of America Plaza, the Omni Hotel, and Reunion Tower, bathed in blue light. This heartfelt gesture was made possible through our deep partnerships within the community, highlighting our collective commitment to standing with those affected during these challenging times. | Photo: Joseph Haubert Photography
“Today, on a holy day of the Jewish calendar, Israel woke up to a brutal and unprecedented attack from Hamas, killing and wounding hundreds of civilians. The City of Dallas strongly condemns this act of terrorism and we stand in solidarity with the State and People of Israel.”

Spotlight on Security Response
“And you shall greatly guard your living souls.” — Deuteronomy 4:15
The Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas is dedicated to safeguarding and caring for our community through a comprehensive security strategy. Our success relies on four key pillars: building and nurturing relationships with law enforcement, delivering emergency alerts to residents, fortifying Jewish establishments against threats, and training community members to respond effectively in emergencies.
We back initiatives that provide vital aid in times of crisis and set up a safety net for those most vulnerable. We stress preparedness and promote local response actions, fostering a collaborative approach that pools resources and expertise. Guided by the words of the Torah, “And you shall greatly guard your living souls,” we are committed to safeguarding and uplifting our community, ensuring everyone feels supported and secure during these challenging times.
Major Dallas Philanthropists Gather for Pacesetter Event
The Pacesetter Event on October 18, 2023, brought together a group of philanthropic leaders who empower the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas to assist our local partners in Dallas, Israel, and worldwide. Academy Award-winning director Guy Nattiv engaged the audience with a captivating discussion about his film “Golda,” set during the tumultuous Yom Kippur War era. Nattiv drew compelling parallels between the Yom Kippur War and the events of October 7, highlighting the ways in which history repeated itself 50 years later. This historical reflection was particularly moving, emphasizing the significance of unity and support in times of crisis.
During the 1970s, JFGD participated in a campaign to offer crucial aid during times of crisis. The Dallas Jewish community remains a steadfast philanthropic leader in its support of Israel. Following the October 7 terrorist attacks, the community swiftly initiated another ambitious campaign, reaffirming its resolute support with a seven-figure lead gift. As history continues to unfold, the Dallas Jewish community continues to lead, embodying the resilience and unity that have characterized their longstanding support for Israel over the years.
March for Israel
On Tuesday, November 14, 2023, the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas proudly joined Americans from all walks of life in the March for Israel in Washington, D.C., marking the largest pro-Israel gathering in American history with nearly 300,000 attendees. Jewish unity was on full display, rivaled in scale only by the Freedom Sunday for Soviet Jews in 1987. Demonstrating immense pride and solidarity, 250 dedicated individuals from Dallas traveled to be a part of this historic moment. This powerful show of unity and support in our nation’s heart underscores the Jewish community’s strength and determination, setting a poignant example of how showing up together can overcome anxieties and foster a spirit of unwavering solidarity.
The Path Forward: Unity and Healing
In the uneasy aftermath of the October 7 attacks, Jewish life continued in Dallas, but not without a lingering sense of vulnerability. Synagogues reopened, schools resumed, and cultural events took place, yet an undercurrent of unease permeated daily routines. Security measures were heightened, and the sense of safety, once taken for granted, was replaced by cautious vigilance. Despite these challenges, the Jewish community’s spirit remained unbroken, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to preserving its traditions and way of life.
Despite the sorrow that permeated the hearts of many, the Festival of Lights brought communities together with compassion and solidarity. Families and friends gathered, lighting the menorah with hands that trembled not just from the cold but from the weight of recent loss. Yet, each flame told a story of endurance; the ancient miracle of the oil that lasted eight days resonated deeply. Songs of prayer echoed through homes and synagogues, weaving a tapestry of support that stretched beyond cities and borders. In this collective embrace, the candles of Hanukkah did more than commemorate history — they rekindled a shared hope for peace, healing, and a brighter future.
From Home to Homeland: An Evening with Noa Tishby
The number of attendees at our Home to Homeland event matched the number of precious souls tragically lost on October 7. Each person symbolized a life that was taken, serving as a poignant reminder of their memory.
“When a society turns on its Jews, it is usually a sign of a wider stays confined to mere ‘pockets’? Once the virus is inside, it
ill-health. Hasn’t history shown us that racism never it does not rest until it has infected the entire body.”

Landmark Dallas Gathering Celebrates Jewish Identity
From Home to Homeland: An Evening with Noa Tishby on February 4, 2024, was a gathering that epitomized Jewish Dallas. This event served as a poignant and powerful tribute, with the number of attendees symbolizing the lives tragically lost on October 7. It highlighted the vitality and spirit of a community that was abruptly taken away, asking attendees to imagine such a loss within their own community as a way of processing the grief. Tishby, embodying Jewish pride, fearlessness, and determination, inspired everyone to be proud and vocal about their heritage. The gathering reinforced a message of strength and unity, showcasing a diverse range of community members, from secular to orthodox, all united under one banner. This unity is a natural reflection of the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas’ core values, emphasizing the importance of coming together in times of need.
Solidarity Mission to Israel
The Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas demonstrated unwavering support and unity by embarking on a solidarity mission to Israel in February 2024. This group represented the largest solidarity mission from the US to Israel since October 7, with 48 people making the pilgrimage. This mission served as both an opportunity and a profound call to action, set against the backdrop of the challenging realities postOctober 7. The group comprised individuals with substantial knowledge of Israel who are leaders in the Dallas and American Jewish communities. Walking on the soil of the homeland and witnessing the sites where terror reigned, this group felt the mission’s emotional gravity firsthand — and also revealed the power of the community’s strength and resilience. This mission wasn’t just an opportunity for one group of people; it was a powerful call to action for all those who hold humanity sacred.
From Sorrow to Strength: The Light of a New Sunrise
Beneath the rising sun, the Nova Music Festival car graveyard stands as a solemn reminder of the unexpected destruction of October 7. Abandoned vehicles, once symbols of adventure and freedom, now rest in silence, telling tales of fleeting moments and lost celebrations.
Shattered Peace
The journey to the epicenter of the attacks evoked raw and genuine emotions in participants who were confronted with the profound magnitude of loss experienced on that tragic day. While many had already internalized the depth of the tragedy, hearing firsthand accounts from those who had witnessed the attacks provoked an emotional upheaval. Standing on this sacred ground allowed everyone to be vulnerable and express their grief and sorrow without restraint.
ZAKA, the organization responsible for preparing the deceased for burial following disasters or tragedies, shared that the scale of these catastrophic attacks was beyond anything it had encountered before. This revelation underscored the severity of the situation and deepened the emotional impact. The visit offered a space for collective mourning and support, allowing the group to connect deeply in their shared sorrow.
Dressed in jackets for protection due to the proximity to live conflict, the group visited Kfar Aza, a heavily hit kibbutz only a few miles from the border of Gaza. This peaceful, tight-knit community suffered unimaginable losses during the massacre that took place there on October 7 — and five hostages remain missing. The group absorbed the horror of the attacks as they witnessed row upon row of destroyed homes. Some of the houses were charred and blackened, while others were covered in bullet holes starting at the doorways and moving into living rooms and safe rooms. Personal effects were strewn about, hearkening back to more ordinary times — shoes left on a porch never to be worn again, a potted plant no longer tended. The stories of the community’s remarkable bravery and valiant efforts to defend itself — and now rebuild — are a poignant reminder of the strength and courage that can emerge even in the darkest of times.
Jewish Dallas & Kibbutz Zikim
The group visited Zikim, a community located precariously close to the Gaza border, which was among those attacked by terrorists on October 7. They were accompanied by a leader of the kibbutz and a soldier in charge of terror response security. These men played a crucial role in defending the kibbutz, helping to save it from what could have been an even greater tragedy. Thanks to their bravery and quick response, no one inside the community was hurt, and the group successfully held off the terrorists, ensuring the safety and security of Zikim’s residents.
The Zikim community has endured significant hardships following the attacks, which have left a lasting psychological impact on both children and adults. In response to these challenges, the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas is honored to stand with Kibbutz Zikim as a dedicated partner. Together, we aim to build vital infrastructure, repair the fractures in community bonds, and cultivate enduring connections that will strengthen the fabric of this resilient community. For example, donations to our Israel Emergency Campaign enabled 19 teens from Zikim to attend URJ Greene Family Camp this summer in Bruceville, Texas. Our partnership in action allowed them to step away from the fear and worry of the past year and have a much-needed break — just being kids at sleepaway camp.
TO FULFILL THE DREAM

Together We Stand: Leadership & Valor
At the end of the mission, a meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog served as a fitting conclusion to the emotional and impactful journey. This powerful moment highlighted the internal bond shared by the Jewish people in Israel and the diaspora, reinforcing their communal strength. The group from Dallas had come to Israel to show their solidarity, and they were deeply moved when President Herzog asked, “How’s Dallas? Are you OK?” This simple yet profound question exemplified the bidirectional bond that transformed the experience, making it clear that the care and concern flowed both ways. Hearing and seeing this interconnectedness in action was amazing, truly showcasing the deep and meaningful connection between communities.
A soldier shares a moment of gratitude as he reads heartfelt letters from Jewish day schools in Dallas during a sponsored lunch for his unit. With ties to Dallas, this brave team recently completed a special mission, rescuing two hostages. The day was capped off with smiles and a disco dance party organized to uplift spirits and spark moments of joy for those whose families are actively serving in Gaza.
Bring Them Home
In the spirit of Passover and the timeless cry of “Let my people go,” the urgency of this plea has never felt more acute than it does this year. Every generation faces its unique challenges, and this is undeniably ours. We demand the safe return of all hostages, a solemn commitment that we have not — and will not — abandon. The echoes of our ancestors’ struggles remind us that we must persist with unwavering dedication to this cause, ensuring that those held against their will are brought back to the safety and freedom they deserve. Our resolve is steadfast, and our mission is clear: to see every hostage returned home.
Israel Memorial Day
On May 12, 2024, more than 400 people gathered for our Yom HaZikaron memorial ceremony at Anshai Torah, marking the largest event in our history. Partnering with the local chapter of the Israel Scouts (Tzofim) youth movement and Friends of the IDF, those who arrived early toured the poignant Gaza Envelope photography exhibition. Despite the somber occasion, our community united to support one another, honoring the memory of those who bravely served and sacrificed for the Jewish state and those lost to terrorism. This year, our collective grief was particularly profound as we mourned the devastating loss of hundreds of lives, highlighting in particular those lost on October 7 and since, reinforcing Dallas’ enduring connection with Israel.
10th Annual Interfaith Seder
The 10th Annual Interfaith Seder, hosted by the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas at Congregation Shearith Israel on April 17, 2024, brought together approximately 400 community members for a meaningful spiritual and intellectual gathering. Rabbi David Stern from Temple Emanu-El and leaders from various faiths guided the event, which featured a performance by the Project Unity Choir. Texas State Senator Nathan Johnson honored the occasion with a resolution emphasizing unity and mutual understanding, highlighting shared heritage and common themes among all faiths. The resolution recognized the historical establishment of JFGD and characterized the Interfaith Seder as a valuable opportunity to celebrate fellowship and strengthen the community.
Focus on Emerging Leaders
The Jewish Federation is passionately dedicated to fostering a thriving Jewish community in Dallas and beyond. Our efforts prioritize engaging young adults in their 30s and 40s, recognizing them as the future leaders of our communal landscape. Through various engagement initiatives, we connect these young adults with the broader Dallas Jewish community, helping them find meaningful Jewish experiences and build lasting relationships in all aspects of life.
Our newly established Emerging Leaders department paves the way for the next generation, building on the legacy of successful programs such as the Leadership Development Group, the National Young Leadership Cabinet, Fisher FLIGHT, Atid, and others. By inspiring and involving young Jewish adults, we ensure the vibrancy and continuity of our community for years to come.
Inspiring the Future: Federation Youth Programs
Jewish education is crucial in fostering a solid and cohesive Jewish community. Nurturing our youth is vital for ensuring Jewish continuity and increasing engagement among all community members. After the events of October 7, the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas brought Jewish teens from various youth movements together to bond and process their experiences, reinforcing their sense of belonging within the community. The PJ Library program significantly contributes to our social and educational mission. An extensive programming calendar offers opportunities for children and parents to discover new friendships, experience Jewish moments, and explore the breadth of our remarkable Jewish community. Our partnership with the Harold Grinspoon Foundation and the Mankoff Family Foundation makes it possible to mail more than 1,900 books monthly at no charge to Dallas families with Jewish children between birth and 8 years old. These books and classroom materials for local preschools inspire a love of reading and a strong Jewish identity. For children aged 9-12, the PJ Our Way program continues this educational journey with innovative learning tools and opportunities, ensuring that Jewish values and traditions are passed down through generations.
