Cruise Industry News

With the Summer Holidays well and truely over – the travel industry is focusing on Winter cruise bargains and early booking incentives for Summer 2011. Royal Caribbean International‘s Summer campaign ended on 30th Sep to be replaced by a more limited one running for the next two months. Cunard is currently running a new campaign for ex UK cruises for next Summer where there is an extra 5% discount off the advertised prices if the balance is paid in full at the time of booking. We are beginning to see more movement in Caribbean pricing and more bookings – look out for the new deal on P&O Ventura and Azura 15 Night Caribbean cruises.

Seabourn Debuts in Southampton “We are thrilled to be able to offer UK travellers the opportunity to sail to and from Southampton over the summer and we look forward to showcasing this stunning vessel to new and returning guests.” Andrew Magowan, Vice President EMEA, The Yachts of Seabourn

Seabourn Sojourn, The Yachts of Seabourn’s newest ultra luxury cruising-yacht is making its debut in Southampton on 27th April 2011. The Port of Southampton will be the second UK port to which Seabourn Sojourn has visited and is the final port of call on its Los Angeles – Southampton, 111 day world cruise itinerary. Seabourn Sojourn also represents the first ultra luxury cruising-yacht to sail into and depart from Southampton in 2011. On the same day it arrives into port, Seabourn Sojourn sets sail on its round-trip Mediterranean Sojourn I & II itinerary, arriving back in the UK on 14th May 2011. On 15th May 2011 the yacht makes its final departure in 2011 from Southampton, headed for Northern Europe and the Baltic Sea. Andrew Magowan, Vice President EMEA, The Yachts of Seabourn says, “After a spectacular Naming in Greenwich this June it is fitting that Sojourn visits the home of cruising in the UK at the end of an epic maiden world voyage. We are thrilled to be able to offer UK travellers the opportunity to sail to and from Southampton over the summer and we look forward to showcasing this stunning vessel to new and returning guests.”

New-Builds This month Cunard Line will launch its third ship, the 92,000-ton, 2,092-passenger Queen Elizabeth, on October 11. The ship, the sixth Carnival Corporation new-build to debut in 2010, will be named in Southampton by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Four more ships, spread among Carnival’s brands, will debut in 2011, including AIDA Sol (April), Carnival Magic (May), Seabourn Quest (May) and Costa Favolosa (June). Looking further ahead, Carnival Corporation has 11 new-builds on the launch chart scheduled for between now and spring 2014, although only two will debut in 2013 and one in 2014.

Cheap Prices for Winter Caribbean Cruises?

Deals or No Deals? With so much capacity in the Caribbean this winter, Royal Caribbean’s 5,400-passenger Oasis-class twins and the monolithic 4,200-passenger Norwegian Epic will be cruising out of Florida, executives noted that ticket prices for winter Caribbean cruises have fallen off from last year. Howard Frank, Carnival Corporation’s vice chairman and COO, noted that there was a 15 percent capacity increase industry wide. All this heavy supply could mean decent deals for bargain-hunting Caribbean cruisers. On the other hand, prices in just about every other destination, including the previously struggling Mexican Riviera, continue to climb.

Cruise prices and profits continue to climb, five new-builds are set to launch in the next year and cruisers may be able to bag a deal on upcoming winter cruises in the Caribbean, caused by the fact that several massive new-builds are saturating the region. This is the prediction indicated by Carnival Corporation’s earnings call for Q3 - a three-month summer period driven by sunny skies and school holidays that’s traditionally been the industry’s most lucrative. Carnival Corporation, the world’s largest cruise company - which operates 97 ships across 11 cruise lines that include Princess Cruises, Costa Cruises, Carnival Cruise Lines and luxury line Seabourn -

posted a net income of $1.3 billion on $4.43 billion in revenue during Q3 of 2010. The income is up roughly $230 million, from $1.07 billion, in the same period last year. The Q3 earnings handily beat Wall Street’s forecasts, and the line responded by boosting its overall outlook for 2010. Executives attributed the success to solidly improved ticket pricing nearly across the board, slightly lower fuel prices year over year (fuel costs were still $396 million), cost-controlling measures and a very low inflationary environment. There was also a one-time windfall of $17 million from a settlement related to Queen Mary 2’s previous azipod issues.

In Case You Missed It Holland America took delivery of the 86,000-ton, 2,106-passenger Nieuw Amsterdam, and AIDA signed a new ship order with Germany’s Meyer Werft for the construction of a 2,192-passenger cruise ship to be delivered spring 2013. This marks the seventh new ship ordered for the flourishing German cruise market in the past six years.

The Caribbean Islands A-Z of our favourite ports of call Part

3

This is the final part of our A-Z on the Caribbean islands which started with our August edition. In this edition we are featuring the Saints and Tortola where the lesser known islands of St Thomas and Tortola have lots to offer. Once again we have tried to give a more practical appraisal of the islands to help you get the most from your visit and to help you save money.

ST KITTS Another member of the British Commonwealth – St Kitts lies at the top of the Lesser Antilles chain close to Antigua. One can’t help but think that Basseterre the capital has been purpose built to receive the cruise ships. These moor at the cruise pier right in front of Port Zante and the shops – or rather cruise dollar relieving centres !!! Visit Brimstone Hill National Park known as the Gibraltar of the West Indies or the sister island of Nevis just a 45 minute ferry ride way. Get a good feel for the island on the scenic railway – originally built to transport sugar cane or chill out at one of the best beaches on the island Cockleshell Beach. This 2 mile stretch of white sand beach is relatively unspoilt and overlooks the island of Nevis- a shared taxi carrying 4 costs approx $21 per taxi. Try an invigorating natural Aloe Vera massage on the beach – it does wonders for your sunburn !!!

ST LUCIA St Lucia is the last of our BIG 3 islands in the Caribbean and also one of our favourites. Another lush tropical island and part of the Windward Island group . The capital is Castries in the North West and there is a lush verdant rain forest in the centre. This island is volcanic and is most famous for Les Pitons – 2 twin conical shaped mountains. St Lucia became part of the British Common wealth as recently as 1979. Unlike many islands St Lucia is not wholly reliant on the cruise ships and it exports much of its produce such as bananas, coconut, cocoa, nutmeg and sugar cane. Castries itself is not purpose built for the cruise ships and so its quite commercial. Therefore you have to get out and about to really appreciate what this island has to offer- with charming fishing villages, bustling markets, & stunning volcanic scenery. Check out picturesque Marigot Bay the location of many films, trek through the rainforest and take a refreshing dip in a waterfall or be adventurous and take a jungle top zip wire adventure. The best beach is Rodney Bay with its white sands or longer Reduit Beach both north of Castries. Most ships moor at the Quayside, bigger ones such as the Queen Mary 2 anchor off shore.

ST MAARTEN This island is part of the Leeward island chain just north of Antigua. This was settled at different periods buy both the Dutch and the French so there are two distinct halves to the island. The capital is Philipsburg where the cruise ships dock at the quayside. This is a delightful warren of narrow streets with interesting shops and leafy courtyard cafes. This is a wonderful place to wander around starting in Wathey Square where you will find a fine collection of West Indian Gingerbread houses. The French Capital is Marigot- worth visiting for its markets, café lined waterfront and the chic boutiques of Marina Port La Royale.

ST THOMAS Purchased from the Danes in 1917 for $25 million ST Thomas is part of the US Virgin Islands - this is THE duty free shoppers paradise in the Caribbean. We never really understood this until we went there as all islands have shops selling jewellery and designer brands. Charlotte Amalie is the capital – and this quaint town is a joy to walk around with its cobbled streets and alley ways filled with the best shops in the Caribbean – but not so much “in your face” as the other islands. Unlike most of the other islands this is the US of A in the Caribbean – it’s clean, organised and well run and you may think that you are in one of the Florida Keys. Ships moor at one of the 2 cruise terminals; the closest to the town centre is Havensight Mall within walking distance. The furthest is at Crown Bay Harbour 4 miles to the west and approximately a 5-10 minute $6 taxi ride away. The best beach is Magens Bay approximately 6 miles away from the capital on the other side of the island. Magens Bay is voted one of the top 10 beaches of the world and is a 1 mile stretch of white sand. When entering St Thomas after visiting other ports of call you have to go through US immigration. This is usually organised on board ship before going ashore. If St Thomas is your last port of call - then usually you do not have to go through immigration again when you get to your home port in the US such as Miami, Fort Lauderdale or New York.

TORTOLA This the largest of the British Virgin Islands and as a result they drive on the left (as in the UK) – confusing the American tourists! Road Town is the capital and is nestled at bottom of a backdrop of mountains. The cruise terminal quay is in the centre of the bay at Wickhams Cay 1 with the expensive Wickhams Cay 2 marina off to the right and the tender pier off to the left for the larger ships moored in the bay. Both are walking distance to the shops – but Road Town is not the best of places to wander around. Just up an over the mountain on the other side of the island is the popular Cane Garden beach - this is a lovely palm fringed sweep of white sand. It takes about 10-15 minutes to get there with some magnificent views of the island and the cost is $6 in a shared minibus / taxi. There is an opportunity to swim with the dolphins in the dolphin sanctuary just to the South of Road Town. This may at first seem an exploitation of captured tourist scarred dolphins – but you quickly realise that is a sanctuary for rescued dolphins that are rehabilitated and are a joy to meet. Also another must here are the Baths at Virgin Gorda – the massive volcanic boulders which form secluded pools and grottos. Before you make any plans to get off your ship check how many cruise ships are in port – when we arrived there were 4 cruise ships in port which meant congested roads and beaches reminiscent of the heydays of 70’s Benidorm !!!

18 Night Med Cruises from £899pp

T

he Mediterranean is one of the most popular regions to visit on a cruise from the UK and due to its close proximity offers the flexibility of spending anything from a few days up to a couple of weeks onboard.

Palermo, Sicily

The Mediterranean sea is part of the Atlantic Ocean with an area of about two and a half million square kilometres. Its coastline borders on countries in Southern Europe, Northern Africa and Eastern Asia. In these countries you can stop at around 120 different sea ports situated in seventeen different countries. These diverse regions and cities allow you to experience many different styles of culture as the Mediterranean has been an important strategic and trading area for a very long time. Some of the best known places you can visit are Rome and Venice in Italy, Barcelona in Spain, Athens in Greece, Alexandria in Egypt, the Holy Land and the island of Gibraltar which is right at the entrance from the main Atlantic.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

8

Each and every one of these destinations has something different to offer and you shouldn’t have any problem finding a cruise tailor made for you as there are more than 50 companies offering cruises in the Mediterranean.

Villefranche A Western Mediterranean cruise will normally take you to, amongst other places, Spain, France, eastern Italy and Morocco whereas an Eastern Mediterranean cruise can include Greece, Croatia, Turkey, Egypt and the Holy Land. Apart from the countries the cruise liner might visit some of the many islands dotted around such as Malta, Sicily, Cyprus or Crete. There is a real mixture of old and new to keep visitors interested on one of these trips starting with the monuments of ancient Greece right through to the vibrant, more modern areas such as Monte Carlo on the French Riviera. A popular option is to combine your cruise with a spot of sunbathing on the sun soaked beaches that are found close to the actual ports. You could spend one week cruising and the second week relaxing by the blue sea. Although the weather in the Med is no match to the Caribbean and other long haul destinations during the winter, head to the south of the continent and you’ll still find a year-round pleasantly warm climate, blue skies and sunshine. The popular departure ports of Rome, Barcelona and Venice are easily accessible, just a short flight away, making the Med a top choice for many cruisers, time and time again.

1Rome

Best Small Pleasure: Eating and drinking at one of the city’s famous piazzas, like Piazza Navona, Piazza del Popolo or Campo dei Fiori; particularly delicious are the pastas (particularly pasta carbonara), pizzas and gelatos, though many cafes only serve pizza for dinner. Washed down with a glass of the house wine - white or red Italian wines always taste delicious. Biggest Surprise: Stumbling across some of Rome’s most famous monuments by accident while meandering along winding, narrow, streets when, suddenly, there’s the Pantheon, the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps, or the neighbourhood of Trastevere, with its funky boutiques and numerous sidewalk cafes. Touristy But Must Do: A pilgrimage to St. Peter’s Basilica and Sistine Chapel in Vatican City.

2BARCELONA

Best Small Pleasure: A plate of tapas... strolling along the beach in the fishing village of Barceloneta... an afternoon siesta. Biggest Surprise: That Barcelona’s most famous cathedral - La Sagrada Familia, designed by native son Antoni Gaudi - is still unfinished more than 75 years after his death. Most fascinating is wandering around a cathedral-in-progress (as construction workers ply their trade around you) and also climbing the 365-winding, turret-esque stairs of the bell towers for an outstanding view. Touristy But Must Do: Wandering along Las Ramblas, Barcelona’s famed pedestrian boulevard and sipping wine at one of its numerous cafes. Also, make sure to visit Las Ramblas’ Boqueria, Barcelona’s fabulous food market and Museu Picasso, not just for its collection of the artist’s work but also the 15th-century palace that houses them.

3VENICE

Best Small Pleasure: Tucking into a cheap - but delicious - plate of pasta with a local wine at one of the city’s numerous trattorias. Biggest Surprise: Riding the vaporreto a water version of a city bus - around the city... exploring the nearby island of Guidecca (where the “real” locals live). Touristy But Must Do: San Marco Square is breathtaking! During the height of summer, try to visit early, before it gets too crowded. Riding in a gondola, at sunset, with a tenor belting out Italian arias.

Ship Focus By Martin Tanner

Having sailed on Queen Mary 2 a number of times we love the elegance and sophistication that can be found on board. The classic colours of the ship: red stripe at the waterline, black hull and white superstructure with a red funnel cuts a very imposing presence in any port of call. This together with the established Cunard name and sailing on a Queen seems to attract attention away from all other ships in any particular port.

It was with trepidation that we decided to try out a cruise on the smaller Queen Victoria for the first time. She did not disappoint and what was said above for the Queen Mary 2 can also be said for Queen Victoria. As always Cunard White Star service was excellent and the food was well cooked and suited our taste (which I am sad to say is typically British). This ship is approximately 90,00 tonnes and is a Vista class ship similar in layout to other cruise ships such as P&O Arcadia and a number of Holland America Line ships such as the Westerdam and Zuiderdam. The Queen Victoria is also the sister ship and blue print for the brand new Queen Elizabeth which launches this month. GENERAL The Queen Victoria is true to its name and the decor is themed on Victoriana. Lots of dark wood panelling, arched interior windows and alcoves; deep greens, reds and blues. The Golden Lion Pub and the sweet shop look as if they have been plucked out of a Victorian London street. The Royal Arcade features a large Victorian clock at the foot of the stairs. Every passenger deck has a FREE guest launderette – we have only ever found this on Cunard ships and they are very handy indeed. Inside are irons, ironing boards, washing machines with free washing powder and tumble dryers. THE LIDO As with most cruise ships - a large self service buffet style restaurant can be found on the pool deck. On the Queen Victoria this is called “The Lido”. This has 3 self

12

service areas all offering the same selection of food and a separate made to order pizza and pasta area. Plus a separate burger grill out the back by the Lido pool. The Lido was open 24 hours a day with Free tea, coffee, hot chocolate an soft drinks on tap. In the evening one section is closed off and converted into a FREE dine by reservation restaurant with Waiter service and menus. They alternate the themes of Traditional English Carvery, Indian, Oriental, French and Italian throughout the cruise. As we always enjoy this on board the Queen Mary 2 we were relieved to find these FREE speciality nights on board this ship and as usual they were excellent. We booked these up as soon as we could. Towards the start of the cruise these nights were barely half full; towards the end of the cruise (as word spread around the ship) they were filled to capacity with many people being disappointed.

TO BOOK CALL US ON 0800 082 2164 OR VISIT www.jetlinecruise.com

Britannia Restaurant The Main Britannia Restaurant seated the majority of the ship over two sittings – we opted for late dining. On Cunard you can request a table for 2 at the time of booking; unusually on this cruise we opted for larger table by the window and we were very fortunate to meet our 4 fellow dining companions from Bolton and Wigan. It has to be said that we were a little nervous on our first night not knowing who we would be dining with for the whole cruise. We were pleasantly surprised and would also say that our dining companions made the cruise even more enjoyable. Sometimes the menus in main restaurants on ships can be hit and miss. After taking a number of cruises you get used to menu language and what may attract you to a particular choice may not be the main ingredient. A number of times I chopped and changed some of the choices around and every night had a great meal – much to the amusement of my dining companions who were sometimes disappointed with their choice. Every night we had a fish option and every time I opted for the fish it was excellent. ROOM SERVICE Just a quick note about room service – it is FREE and not everyone knows that ! Every night we would fill out our breakfast in bed card before retiring and would be woken in the morning with a Fresh pot of tea and breakfast. This enabled to have lazy mornings in bed and go for even more breakfast in The Lido later around 11am! By the way – lots of the latest feature films are available FREE on your stateroom TV.

STATEROOMS These were spacious and very similar in style to those found on Queen Mary 2. The only differences being smaller bathrooms and limited drawer space. Although there are two rather large and handy under bed storage drawers. We booked an A4 balcony stateroom on deck 5 – midships with a glass fronted balcony. Lower priced lead in balcony grades of A7 and A6 are situated on deck 4 – with metal fronted balconies towards the front of the ship. We opted for the A4 grade as these cabins and balconies can vary in size depending on where they are situated on the ship. The standard balcony cabin size is 228 sq feet. We specifically booked early to secure our particular stateroom number as it was larger, the balcony was bigger and curved around the corner giving a wonderful vista out to sea and down the side of the ship. DAY TIME RECREATION Our cruise itinerary was pretty full with few days at sea. Having done a number of Trans Atlantic voyages we prefer the days at sea to completely relax. This ship is ideal as there are 2 pool areas: The Pavilion Pool in the middle of the ship which was more sheltered; and the Lido Pool at the back of the ship for great vistas and sail-aways. The Royal Spa is well worth the extra charge payable for the hydro therapy pool and the thermal relaxation lounge. The fitness centre is free and the segregated changing rooms each have a FREE Swedish sauna which became very popular. Up on the top deck a huge chess set, deck quoits, tennis court, table tennis and golf practice provide extra amusement. At 2pm each day the latest feature film is shown in the theatre.

EVENING ENTERTAINMENT As with most cruise ships you have the usual assortment of bars, a casino and a theatre. On Cunard ships there are a number of signature bars not found on others such as the Commodore Club at the front of the ship with a pianist - a very stylish club serving excellent Martinis and Cocktails – styled on the same from the original Queen Mary. The Golden Lion Pub for a pint, Pub Lunches ( excellent Fish and Chips - by the way it’s FREE), pub quizzes and evening Karaoke. The Chart Room - for the prefect pre dinner aperitif accompanied by a string Quartet. Also the Veuve Cliquot champagne bar ! Every evening our fellow dining companions reported back on great shows in the theatre from the night before. On the last night we went to the signature farewell Victoriana show. I have to say that was the best show we have seen on any ship – period costumes, song a dance culminating in flag waving Land of Hope and Glory – very British indeed. The other big difference with this ship is that there is the Queen’s ballroom (2 decks high) situated where the main night club and another lounge are on other Vista class ships. This is a big band formal entertainment venue that was constantly in use . This was also the setting for daily afternoon tea with white china and white gloved waiters serving scones and clotted cream. Looking back this was a memorable cruise for wonderful dining companions, excellent food, relaxation, lots of choice and great service. What more can you want from a cruise!!! We look forward to our next cruise on the brand new Queen Elizabeth.

What is so great is that a number of our team have experienced the ship first hand, so if a cruise on this new ship appeals, give us a call now and we can give you all the advice you need. TO BOOK CALL US ON 0800 082 2164 OR VISIT www.jetlinecruise.com

Guest Letters

We are always delighted to hear your feedback here at Jetline Towers so please keep them coming! Here’s a selection of letters and emails we’ve received this month. Letters can be emailed to Jane@jetlinecruise.com

Dear Jetline Cruise We have just returned from a fantastic trip organized by Max to Alaska. The hotel in Seattle was very good, our cabin on Deck 10 spacious and the food exceptional, the Amtrak to Chicago an experience, and our four nights in Chicago amazing. We would like to send our thanks for the way all the connections went very smoothly and will certainly look to using Jetline in the future. Best wishes, Ann & Ian Archer

Dear Jetline

Dear Emma

I have recently returned from a fabulous holiday booked with the help of Warren Grodent. This was a surprise holiday for a special birthday for my husband. I feel compelled to write about an aspect of Jetline, which does not appear in your brochures, and which I feel should be brought to the attention of anyone perusing your brochures/site etc.

Please pass on my thanks to Julie Morgan for her helpfulness in booking our holiday to Alaska. Julie’s helpful manner convinced me I should try again & the way she handled a problem with Amtrak timetable & kept me informed on every detail has underlined this was a good decision.

The name ‘Jetline Cruise’ implies a cruise company. My holiday has been anything but that. We set off in Manchester and flew to Paris. We then flew to San Francisco, spent time there, flew to New York and spent time there, and then cruised from New York to New England with Celebrity Cruises. Right from day one, all my queries have been handled most professionally. Never has Warren pushed me into booking and the time it has taken to arrange this holiday was never an issue for him. Whenever I e-mailed with a query etc, a reply was always forthcoming within 24 hours. I have dealt with so many firms over the years, where constant phone calls from them has resulted in me not wanting to do business. Jetline has provided and all-round holiday booking experience for me and therefore your speciality goes far beyond that of just cruising.

My thanks again & I will now be recommending you to others in addition to booking again myself. Yours Sincerely, Ron Wilson

To anyone thinking of booking a first cruise, or anyone wanting more than just a cruise, you need look no further than Jetline. All my travel, accommodation, special requests etc, were all handled superbly. Thank you Warren and Jetline for all your help. Yours faithfully, Sue Parkinson

Dear Harley My passport arrived on Saturday with the visa attached. I would like to thank you for your prompt and repeated support in this matter. It was a great help to know that you were giving 100% effort while the visa process slowly dragged on. Thank you, Garry

Exceptional value for Money

FROM

LAS VEGAS & HAWAII 18 Night Fly-Cruises with Golden Princess Get the most out of your precious holiday time & stop over in Las Vegas for a FREE 3 night stay before flying onto Los Angeles to join your 14 night Hawaiian Islands cruise. We believe this offer is exceptional value for money for 2 “Must See” locations and the travelling distances involved. Check out the headline acts and themed casino hotels on the Las Vegas Strip. Don’t forget to include some bargain hunting time and perhaps visit the Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon during your stay. For many in their 40’s Hawaii initially conjures up images of Magnum PI and red Ferraris. For those in their 50’s Steve Garret and Hawaii Five O are frantically canoeing though the surf, whilst 60 something’s may think of Elvis in his film Blue Hawaii and Rockahula. Most think of exotic Hula girls, Lei Garlands, swaying palms and magnificent sunsets. Perhaps visit Pearl Harbour and the Arizona monument or take a stroll along Waikiki beach on Oahu. Visit the pineapple plantations of Maui, the Wailua Falls and Nawiliwili harbour of Kauai. Go on a breathtaking Volcano adventure on the Big Island or simply have a Luau – an Hawaiian version of a BBQ but much more colourful and fun!

Perhaps enjoy the cosmopolitan and chic atmosphere of Mykonos or travel back in time to the Medieval crusades on Rhodes in the ancient walled city and Mandraki Harbour. This new Ship was launched in July last year and is the sister ship to Celebrity Eclipse. This is cruising with a difference urban loft style with cool non fussy interiors harking back to the days of a retro 30’s Hollywood style. There are a great range of bar / dining venues on board and the lawn club with its glass blowing demonstrations on the top deck is a quirky feature setting this ship apart from others. Check out the huge hammocks in the solarium pool area and double bed sun loungers beside the main pool.
