Customer Reviews COMPETITION Readers may remember back in June we launched our Customer Review area on the website so that our guests could share their experiences with fellow cruisers. It has been a hugely popular facility so far and it’s great to see so many of you offering advice and tips, both good and bad to help other travellers enjoy the best holiday experience possible. Every three months we will be picking our favourite three reviews for readers to vote on their favourite – and the winner will receive a MASSIVE £200 of Marks and Spencer vouchers. To vote simply pick your favourite and complete the form at the bottom of the page and send to us at Jetline HQ. And please don’t forget to keep on sharing your views at www.jetlinecruise.com, there will be another winner in three months time and you never know, it just might be you!

Review 3 Approaching the port I always feel a massive feeling of excitement building when, as I drive down the road, I can see the ship from afar waiting for it’s new influx of passengers. Epic, Norwegian Cruise Line’s latest vessel, was my first experience of an NCL ship, and my expectation that she would be garish and very americanised were completely unfounded.

Review 1 At the tail end of our hideously dark, cold and gloomy UK winter this year I was fortunate to be whisked away on holiday for a birthday treat and found myself in the sunshine sailing away from Port Canaveral on the spectacular Freedom of the Seas. The planned itinerary was to visit Cococay in the Bahamas, the beautiful Charlotte Amalie in St Thomas and Philipsburg, St Maarten with cruise days either side to indulge in some much needed rest and relaxation.

Review 2 Last time I visited ‘Down Under’ I took a hideously long flight, and spent over 5 days each end getting over it, so decided to travel in style and enjoy a leisurely ocean journey, leaving the winter blues far behind.

Well this holiday was everything I could have wished for and Freedom of the Seas is a truely outstanding ship. From the moment I left my front door, I seemed blessed to have a smooth and hassle free 9 days. Using my loyalty points I’d accrued with Jetline’s Cruise & Save reward scheme I enjoyed free entrance into the VIP lounge at the airport, bliss!!! Freedom blew my mind at every turn. I’d never sailed with Royal Caribbean before and they really are something else!! Not a moment of boredom, I climbed the rockwall one day, and chilled out in the spa the next. The food was great, the entertainment choices perfect and the staff were extremely accommodating. I loved the ports of call, which were all new to me as destinations. St Thomas has now hit top spot of my favourite Caribbean island, fabulous shopping and stunning beaches - I joined a shore excursion to go scuba diving for the first time there, and wow, I’m hooked.

Arcadia is a pretty stylish and somewhat contemporary ship, which surprised me, as I had only ever previously experienced P&O’s more traditional offerings of the fleet. There were some touches of indulgence to enjoy, such as the fabulous spa facilities, and the cuisine onboard, both in variety of choice, and quality was second to none and couldn’t be faulted. I loved the contemporary decor, each area of the ship looks like it belongs in the pages of a swanky magazine! I spent a lot of time in the gym and the pool to try and counter balance the huge amounts of delicious food I was consuming! I was a little disappointed with the night time entertainment which was laid on, but to be honest, there’s plenty of lovely bars and lounges onboard to just go and relax for the evening, and I was never bored so I can’t really complain.

In summary, I can thoroughly recommend booking a cruise on Freedom of the Seas with Jetline Cruise - a brilliant holiday experience from start to finish.

I most definitely made the right choice, I would sail on this beautiful ship again, and if I make another trip to Australia or New Zealand, a cruise is the way to do it!

Having only ever cruised with more ‘traditional’ dining cruise lines, I hadn’t experienced Freestyle Dining. I loved the concept, but personally missed the grandeur of walking into a beautiful dining room. The choice of food options was quite outstanding though, the specialist venues do carry a small cover charge of around $25pp, but there were plenty of free options and the cuisine was mouthwatering in the restaurants I did have chance to try as I cruised from Southampton to New York on her maiden voyage. During the day, there are endless entertainment and activity options, plenty of classes and a whole host of fun features including a rock climbing and abseiling wall, and a massive TV screen on the top deck to enjoy movies al fresco! My only criticism would be the lack of sunbeds, and I do think on busy sailings, it could feel a little jampacked out on deck at times. Mandara Spa, which apparently is the largest spa at sea was magnificent! I had some luxurious pampering time with a full body massage and facial and really felt like I was in a five star resort. There’s also some fabulous shops onboard which I spent way too much money in. I also tried some new types of classes, namely tequila tasting (which I loved) and improv comedy (which I was rubbish at!). The staterooms are contemporary, although maybe a little unsual, with ‘open plan’ bathrooms (sink in the stateroom and toilet and shower behind sliding frosted glass doors). All were superbly appointed although if you suffer from claustrophobia I wouldn’t recommend the single traveller cabins, a great concept but definitely wouldn’t suit everyone. I was seriously impressed by the evening entertainment options. Blue Man Group have been brought onboard with their one-of-a-kind theatrical performance, it was extremely talented and most definitely a must see if you take a cruise onboard Epic. Cirque Dreams & Dinner is held in the Spiegel Tent, just like inside a Big Top where you can dine and watch Broadway, eccentricity and acrobatics come to life. Overall, a fabulous new ship on the seas from NCL, and I would thoroughly recommend her to all Jetline customers, not a moments’s boredom or disappointment for the entire transatlantic crossing!

Roving Reporter Review

Back from her exciting maiden voyage onboard Norwegian Cruise Line’s Epic, Nelda Davies reports back to the readers!

B

efore I begin to tell you about our transatlantic cruise on the Maiden Voyage of Norwegian Cruise Line’s Epic, I would like to say to all the readers who were kind enough to vote for me, A BIG THANK YOU! My horoscope for the week said “expect lots of communication and conversations” and when I found out I was the winner, my phone was red hot telling my friends the good news. Who would I take with me? Well it had to be my stepdad Nev. On arrival we were shown our ‘studio cabins’ which were inside singles. Ultra modern with changing lights, huge bed, open plan with a toilet cubicle, a separate shower cubicle (beware of privacy as although they have frosted glass surround, it’s not as private as ‘traditional’ bathrooms!!!) and the ‘ultra-contemporary’ wash basin inside the cabin itself. We had a separate private lounge area where all the guests from the studio cabins could meet up, where there was a bar, coffee machine and TV. What a totally new experience in cruising, very interesting. The entertainment was certainly different. You had to book tickets to see all the main shows. I went

delier tiful Swarovski chan Posing by the beau

to book for Cirque Dreams and dinner show (additional charge is payable) but I had left it too late and they were already sold out. My advice would be book everything on your embarkation day for the duration of your holiday if you travel on Epic so as not to be disappointed. There were no shows in the Epic Theatre for the first three nights which seemed a shame as it is such a beautiful theatre. I hope it will be used to its’ full potential for Gala Shows on future cruises. We enjoyed all the entertainment at various venues throughout the ship, from the famous ‘Blue Man Group’ show in the Epic Theatre, ‘Oh What a Night’ (Jersey Boys cover group) at Spice H2O, a wonderful comedy magician at the Headliners Club. Our favourite entertainers were a husband and wife act named ‘Wildfire Duo’ who performed each night at the Atrium, very relaxing, with a massive screen behind them showing fantastic scenery from around the world as they played the violin and guitar. I took a tour of the ship one day which is jam packed from bow to stern. There were first class gym facilities although the only inside pool was located in the superb Mandara Spa for which there is a surcharge to use the spa facilities. As I wandered around I was thinking “fancy having bowling alleys and escalators on ships these days. My, how times have changed since my first cruise on Calypso all those years ago!!!” Unfortunately I could not spend too much time outdoors as it was too cold, so didn’t try out the super water slide or any of the sports areas. I did do a couple of miles on the jogging track one day though! The food on the ship was excellent. With 13 dining venues to choose from, you certainly had a variety of options. Unfortunately, 9 of the restaurants had surcharges ranging from $10 to $25 per head, although the food in these restaurants was so delicious, it certainly

rated the cover fee, and there were plenty of alternative free options should you so wish. We tried out La Cucina (Italian) one night and rated it first class. Both Nev and myself enjoyed ourselves immensely. There is no doubt that Epic is indeed a superb ship with state of the art technology, first class decor, a great variety of shops and good facilities for children. Thank you again for choosing me as your Roving Reporter!

The Caribbean Islands A-Z of our favourite ports of call Part

2

Continuing on from our August Edition here is part 2 of our A-Z explanation of the Caribbean Islands. In this edition we are featuring Cozumel to Key West. Our quick check guide to see what’s hot and what’s not in the Caribbean, packed with lots of practical information to help you get the most out of your visit and save money. Look out for the final Part 3 in our October edition of Cruise Ahoy.

CURACAO Sandwiched in between Bonaire and Aruba – volcanic Curacao is situated in the far South of the Caribbean just 40 miles off the coast of Venezuela. The capital Willemstad is a cosy Dutch haven with its neat row houses. Visit the Hato Caves formed from coral reefs with stalagmites and stalactites and the freshwater waterfall. Also visit the Shete Boka National Park to marvel at Boka Tabla – a wide limestone tidal cavern. Knip Beach is a UNESCO designated beach with its natural white sands surrounded by volcanic hills. The Ostrich Farm is the largest outside of Africa where you can feed the birds and watch the Ostrich dance. Best souvenir buys are Delft pottery and of course the Sapphire Blue Liqueur – Curacao.

DOMINICA Dominica was discovered by Columbus in 1493 and was named after the day he discovered it – Sunday ! This mountainous lush tropical island belonging to the Leeward Island group is approximately 30 miles long by 15 miles wide. The capital Roseau lies in the South Western corner and is very picturesque at the foot of green hills and mountains. Ships usually moor at the quayside and you are right in the heart of the town. The roads here are extremely narrow and steep – but its worth the 1 hour journey to Ti Tou Gorge where there is a refreshing waterfall amidst the rain forest. On the way back check out the Sulphur Springs and take a photo stop at the Botanical gardens overlooking Roseau and the bay. Not great for beaches. The sail away from Dominica is beautiful – one of the best in the Caribbean.

GRAND CAYMAN This island is part of the British Commonwealth and it is famed for its Scuba diving and white sands, in particular 7 mile beach close to Georgetown the capital. It is also one of the few nesting grounds of the logger head turtle. One of the best things to do is snorkelling with the Sting Rays – you will not be disappointed. Try visiting Hell - a village in the far corner of the island where you will find a turtle farm. Ships generally anchor off shore here and the island is reached by tender. The town is pleasant enough to walk around and it is not blatantly purpose built to relieve of your cruise dollars!!!

GRENADA Known as the Spice island where the aromas of Nutmeg, cinnamon and Cocoa hang in the air. This volcanic island with tropical rainforests and waterfalls lies at the southern end of the Windward Island chain. Most ships dock at the quayside, the bigger ones moor offshore and a tender takes you to the bay on the other side of the headland in St George’s - the capital. This bay is closer to Grand Anse beach (a two mile stretch of white sand) which can be reached by water taxi for just $6. The sunbeds and umbrellas can be quite expensive so be prepared to haggle – if you get 2 beds and an umbrella for $15 you are doing well!! Whilst here visit the Grand Etang cobalt blue lake and take a refreshing dip in the Royal Mt Carmel waterfall or perhaps go river tubing on the Balthazar River. There is also the unique underwater sculpture park at Molinere Point for keen snorkelers.

JAMAICA Jamaica is more of a country rather than an island and you cannot really do it justice on a day trip. On most itineraries – cruise ships call in at Ocho Rios towards the eastern end of the North Coast. Here cruise ships will either moor directly at the quay side in the town centre or further out and a 5 minute taxi ride away. Ocho Rios is a bit of a cruise tourist trap for shops etc and the unauthorised street sellers can be pests. In the centre of the North coast is Montego Bay which is a lesser frequented port of call and even less of a desirable place to wander around. There are some great attractions on Jamaica – the biggest one being Dunns River Falls made famous by the James Bond film Dr No. Here you have the refreshing opportunity to walk up the falls – the guides ask you to hold hands as it can be quite slippery. Gentle bamboo rafting on the Martha Brae river made famous by Errol Flynn is exceedingly tranquil and worth doing. Another great trip is horse riding through the sugar cane plantations, on to the beach then swimming on your horse in the sea - absolutely marvellous. Perhaps visit the Blue Mountains and the coffee plantations for a unique souvenir or gift.

KEY WEST At the Southern end of the Florida Keys just 90 miles from the coast of Cuba this holiday paradise is the perfect mix of the Caribbean meets Cape Cod. Wonderful weather, white sand beaches, excellent nightlife, tropical plants and attractive upmarket houses. This is clean, tidy, organised and fun. The marina with its wooden boardwalk, rustic bars and pelicans is excellent and leads to Duval Street which is the heart of Key West. Fort Zachary Beach and conservation area is the ideal place for a dip. The island is flat and hiring a mountain bike is a great way to get around or alternatively take the trolley bus tour . You must visit Sloppy Joes for a drink – the old hangout of Ernest Hemingway. The ships moor at the cruise pier in front of the upmarket condos and a short walk leads you to the western end of Duval Street and the marina.

Destination Focus Dubai Dubai is the biggest and most developed of the seven United Arab Emirates, it encompasses a fabulously over the top attitude where anything and everything is possible. This is a port city that lies on the Arabian Gulf, a gateway to many destinations such as Iran, Iraq, Pakistan and Bangladesh but, far from brash, it is more apt to call it ‘impressive’ or ‘progressive’ and, as a tourist, let yourself be indulged.

Dubai Cruises from £1199pp

D

ubai’s most distinctive feature is its fabulously over-the-top hotels, shopping malls and plethora of activity and entertainment options such as skiing in the desert or experiencing a 4x4 safari. Dubai which, as early as the 1950’s was a small-time trading and fishing port, has literally risen from the sand and is ever growing in popularity as a British holiday destination by travellers who are magnetically drawn by its resorts, gorgeous beaches and coast, and it duty-free status as a shopping mecca. Increasingly Dubai is also becoming a major port of embarkation for cruisers embarking on the growing number of Middle East itineraries. Jetline Cruise have also packaged up some outstanding EXCLUSIVE Cruise & Stay packages for customers to extend their stay pre or post cruise in this fantastic destination.

See the Burj Khalifa - the tallest building in the world

For a mini foray into the Middle East, Dubai, which straddles both the worlds of the West and the East, offers an easy transition. When you dock in the port it’s clearly evident that Dubai has embraced cruisers and its newly built cruise terminal is so lovely you’ll want to do more than pass through it. The Port

See The Burj al Arab Hotel on your FREE city tour of Dubai facility offers a coffee bar, a deli/lunch operation, and free Internet on five terminals in its business centre. There’s a currency exchange office, an ATM and a concierge who can set you up with day tours. The port terminal offers two free shopping shuttles, one each to Mercato Mall and City Centre Drive and departures leave on the hour.

Don’t Miss! • Experience the city’s history before you experience any of the modern attractions. Start your journey at Khor Dubai, otherwise known as Dubai Creek, which runs through the heart of the city. It separates Deira, a business-oriented part of the city, from Bar Dubai, where many tourist attractions are located, from the Dubai Museum, a fabulous ode to the past that is built around the Al-Fahidid Fort, dating back to the late 18th century. The Hatta Heritage Village nearby offers more on its social and cultural history, as well as excellent insights into the city’s Bedouin lifestyle. Adjacent is the Sheikh Saeed al-Maktoum House, the one-time home of the current ruler’s grandfather, and it gives an excellent look into the pre-oil times of the late 19th century.

Brilliance of the Seas • While in Bar Dubai, certainly don’t miss the Gold Souk (which encompasses something like 1,000 different merchants) and the Spice Souk. Travellers will also find the “marina” in this area where they can learn all about the famous dhows. These rickety, canvas-covered boats sail to those aforementioned “oft-forbidden lands” which are so easily accessible from Dubai carrying mostly cargo and are a fascinating sight to watch. • Another ‘must’ for the sightseeing list is chic Jumeirah for its’ elegant resorts, beautiful beaches and atmospheric souks. You may have seen photos of the iconic hotel Burj Al Arab, which promotes itself as the world’s only seven-star rated establishment. It’s worth a visit if you can get in (tourists not staying there are not always welcome). The 27-floor hotel, designed to look like a sailboat’s sail, has an underwater restaurant (you have to take a submarine to get there) and a foyer with water ballet fountains decked out in gold leaf. The best way to gain entrance is to make a reservation at one of its restaurants • The Wild Wadi Waterpark, next to the swish Jumeirah Beach Hotel, features 23 rides, some interconnected, and on really hot days the water is cooled. • Don’t forget the Shopping Malls and they’re enormous! The best known include the Wafi City Mall and the aforementioned City Centre and Mercato. Visitors can also indulge in the upscale Bur Jurman Mall where shops range from Hermes to Saks.

• A Desert Safari is a must for the list as well – you’ll be taken in a 4x4 car 50 minutes into the desert, where the sand dunes tower impressively above you like mountains as far as the eye can see. Part one of the experience is a crazy ride up and down the dunes with a handful of other 4x4s doing the same thing and then afterwards, you head to a camp where you’re feted with a barbecue dinner of typical Middle Eastern cuisine such as chicken, lamb, ribs and salads and given a chance to ride a camel, snowboard down a sandboard, have your feet henna’ed and watch an amazingly trim bellydancer. • If you’re visiting between November and April, check out the Horse racing which is hugely popular with the locals in Dubai. • And don’t miss the opportunity to experience camel racing; it’s held at the Nad al-Sheba track on Thursday and Friday, first thing in the morning, during winter months. Your cruise specialist will be able to advise on how to best pre book a number of the outstanding activities available both ashore and onboard your cruise ship. Jetline Cruise have packaged together the best possible Dubai & the Middle East Cruise & Stay options for you. Sailing with either Royal Caribbean International or P&O Cruises, you can choose to extend your stay at the beginning or end with a land based stay in one of a wide selection of hotels we have specially picked for our guests.

5-10 Night Fly Cruises with Adventure of the Seas Grab one of these late booking bargains – prices are changing all the time – CALL NOW for the latest prices. These unusual itineraries are some of the few which start from Malaga and gives those of you who would fly from regional airports better direct flight connections. The 7 night Med itinerary is unusual as it includes both Corsica and Sardinia which are somewhat more exotic than the regular ports of call in Spain, France and Italy. The 5 night canaries break gives you a chance for a quick getaway to visit the best bits of Canaries Island itinerary or perhaps add this to the 5 night Med break to select ports of call such as Provence and Corsica. The Voyager class ships where revolutionary for their size and amazing variety of things to do on board. These 5 sister ships paved the way for the big selling ships of today such as Independence and Oasis of the Seas. The Adventure of the Seas was the third Voyager class ship to be built and 2010 is the first year she will be based in Europe away from her home port in the Caribbean.

CRUISE FROM MALAGA LATE BOOKING BARGAINS Add extra nights in Malaga from only £30pp per night

The things we love about this ship are: the Royal Promenade mall area where there is a lovely FREE coffee shop / patisserie to sit and watch the world go by or the Dog & Duck British Pub to make you feel at home. The Schooner Bar is a trade mark on the Royal Caribbean ships and attracts a busy crowd. The kids clubs on board and video games arcade are second to none and the adults only atrium pool is excellent. 7 night Med: Fly direct from London to Malaga and cruise for 7 nights to Cagliari (Sardinia) – Civitavecchia (Rome) – Ajaccio (Corsica) – Majorca - Malaga.
