Cruise Industry News

Here is the latest round up of cruise industry news for this month. There are 2 big focuses for the cruise lines and they are: selling their late space for the remainder of this year and gaining the biggest chunk of the ever growing early booking market. There are lots of bargains for the last quarter of this year for the Med & the Caribbean plus a good number of attractive offers for Christmas. For 2011 prices and promotions are ever changing with the end of one campaign and the start of another - remember the earlier you book the better the deal. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity’s early booking offers have just come to an end - to be replaced by another that runs until the end of September with altered pricing levels and reduced on board credit. P&O and Cunard currently have their launch editions of their 2011 brochures on sale - these will be replaced on 1st September by the 1st Editions which always feature higher prices and reduced benefits.

HOLLAND AMERICA’S LATEST SHIP GETS ROYAL BLESSING

The Holland America ms Nieuw Amsterdam was launched and named in Venice. The line’s second Signature-class ship after the Eurodam is the largest passenger ship to sail under the Dutch flag. Princess Máxima of the Netherlands officially named the line’s 15th ship in a ceremony rich with Dutch heritage where Fifteen fleet captains representing Holland America Line’s ships participated in the festivities. The 2,106-guest Nieuw Amsterdam was built at Fincantieri’s Marghera yard near Venice & is the fourth to carry that name for the line. She departed on her maiden voyage roundtrip from Venice to nearby Mediterranean ports following the naming ceremony. After a series of 12-day Mediterranean sailings, the ship embarks on a trans-Atlantic crossing to the Caribbean to sail seven-day itineraries from November 2010 through March 2011.

AZAMARA ANNOUNCES LANDTOURS Azamara Club Cruises has announced 13 land-tour itineraries to offer more “cultural experiences” for its travellers. The trips range from two to six-night escorted land adventures in eight destinations, including Rome, Athens, Buenos Aires, Cairo, Istanbul, Jordan and Israel, India and China. All land-tour itineraries will be lead by a tour director or a local host, and will feature accommodation in five-star hotels. In summer 2011, guests of Azamara Journey and Azamara Quest can choose a two-night Athens or three-night Rome cruise tour package. Meanwhile, in India, a five-night itinerary has been introduced, allowing guests to visit Delhi and the Taj Mahal.

CRUISE LINES TO COMPLY WITH TOUGH NEW US LAWS A new US cruise ship law, which will set more stringent security rules for every ship calling at US ports, has been signed by President Obama. The Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act will come into force in 18 months and will impose major new rules on ships carrying more than 250 passengers. The law will set requirements for deck rail heights, and will require peep holes in every cabin door, on-deck video surveillance and an emergency sound system. It will also require ships to employ a trained forensic sexual specialist as well as carry rape evidence kits and anti-retroviral medication. Cruise lines that do not conform to the new rules could be denied entry into US ports, face civil fines of up to $50,000 per violation and criminal penalties of up to $250,000 as well as potential imprisonment.

12th SHIP SIGNED FOR MSC MSC Cruises has unveiled its 12th ship and NEW flagship, the MSC Fantastica and will be the 3rd ship of the Fantasia class at 133,500 tonnes carrying just under 4000 passengers. The cruise line’s president, Gianluigi Aponte, signed a deal with the STX France ship yards in St-Nazaire, accompanied by French President Nicolas Sarkozy. The vessel is due to be delivered by the end of spring 2012. Keynote features include the Aurea Spa, 5 restaurants, 4 swimming pools, 12 hydro-massage pools, coffee bars, shops, a children’s area, a Formula 1 simulator and an interactive 4D cinema. The Aurea Spa features a thermal cave with treatments

MSC Fantasia to enhance both beauty and health: therapeutic mud packs, perfumed vapours, aesthetic massages and much, much more. This class of ship has an exclusive VIP area: the MSC Yacht Club with 99 spacious suites, a bar, solarium, 2 hydro-massage pools, a swimming pool, a reserved observation lounge with bar, Concierge and a forward Observation Lounge where huge glass windows enable guests to make the most of the amazing views.

Cruise ships which currently call at US ports are already subject to strict rules and laws. Hence the reason why many older ships and certain cruise lines operating Caribbean, Panama Canal and Transatlantic itineraries do not visit a US port of call at all – otherwise the ships would face being impounded. Cruise lines have begun altering their ships to comply with tough new safety regulations being introduced in the United States, according to the Passenger Shipping Association. Cruise lines that fail to conform could be denied entry to US ports and face severe fines of up to $250,000 as well as potential imprisonment for staff. Passenger Shipping Association PR director Penny Guy said many ships already feature a number of the new requirements, such as higher railings and peepholes in cabin doors.

CELEBRITY ECLIPSE ALMOST SOLD OUT FOR SUMMER 2010 96% of 2010 summer cruises on Celebrity Eclipse have now sold out. Celebrity Cruises said its new ship, which launched in April, was sailing at full capacity on each voyage. Celebrity Eclipse is the first ship of the fleet to be dedicated to the UK and has received record bookings. The reaction to Celebrity Eclipse has been beyond expectations, and it is now the most popular ship for our British and Irish guests in the Celebrity Cruises fleet. The spacious retro 30’s feel of the ship with a modern twist has received rave reviews. Features such as the top deck lawn club, glass blowing demo workshop and the Sunset bar have been well received. The pool area with it’s double bed sun loungers, extra shaded areas and water features have been very popular.

The Caribbean Islands A-Z of our favourite ports of call Part

1

We have ditched the brochure speak for this feature – where we give our frank and honest opinion of each of the major islands in the Caribbean. Of course - most of the Caribbean islands have lots of history where they have been fought over by the French and the British at some stage – but each island story seems similar to the next. So in this feature we would like to express what is different about each port of call and give practical information to help you get the most out of your visit and save money. Look out for Part 2 in our September edition of Cruise Ahoy.

Antigua Antigua is one of our big 3 Caribbean Islands for the British holiday maker – being a great destination in itself. Antigua has 365 beaches - one for every day of the year; the most popular ones being Galley Bay and Hawksbill beaches. Antigua is also extremely popular with the sailing fraternity with many marinas packed with expensive yachts. Nelson’s fleet was hosted in the late 1700’s in a picturesque bay on the other side of the island to the capital and is now one of the best known bays for said sailing fraternity – now aptly named Nelson’s Dockyard. St Johns is the capital of Antigua where the cruise ships moor at the quayside and you are met by a frenzied complex of tourist shops and jewellers specially arranged for the discerning and wealthy cruise passenger! Having travelled across the island we found it pretty uninteresting - but the beaches more than make up for it.

ARUBA Aruba is situated just 15 miles off the coast of Venezuela at the Southern end of the Caribbean. This island is 5 Miles wide by 19 Miles long so getting around does not take long and is relatively in expensive. The north side of the island is the exposed rocky jagged coast while the south coast has the soft white sand beaches, great shopping, stunning sea and desert landscape views. All of this can be experienced from the capital Oranjestad with its heavy Dutch influences. The closet beaches to the capital are Surfside beach and Druif beach both with soft white sand. Aruba is a mecca for American tourist and beach holidays. Ships moor at the quayside and it is a short walk into town.

BAHAMAS This scattered group of islands off the coast of Florida make up the Bahamas marking the gateway to the Caribbean. Nassau is the capital where the cruise ships dock and take you straight in cruise ship shopping central. Grand Bahama is the next biggest and this has some great white sand beaches. Plus there is the opportunity to swim with the dolphins. The Bahamas are ideal for snorkelling and scuba diving. Many cruise lines have their own dedicated beach island in the Bahamas which is purely a day for beach BBQ and relaxing on the beach. Islands include Coco Cay (RCI & Celebrity), Half Moon Cay for Holland America and Princess Cays for Princess cruises. These privately owned islands are really an extension of the ship without losing any revenue to the locals !!! But a great day out never the less for sunbathing, putting your toes in the sand and a bit of space.

BARBADOS Probably the most popular island for British holiday makers and another of our big 3. There are two reasons for this - the incredible white sand beaches on the sheltered western side of the island and because it’s the only Caribbean Island to be colonised by one nation – the Brits! You will even find a Trafalgar Square here. Bridgetown is the capital lying in the South Western corner of the island. There is a large cruise dock where shuttle buses take you from the cruise ship to the terminal. The main town centre is approx 10-15 minutes walk from the cruise terminal – this is not so much of a purpose built centre for cruise passengers but the commercial heart of the island which does very well from its land based tourism. The closest beach is Boatyard Beach which is approx 15 minutes walk or a $3 taxi ride from the cruise terminal – not mentioned by the cruise lines in their excursion books! This white sand happening beach is well equipped particularly in its Adventure Beach area with lots of things to do. There is an entrance charge which includes sunbeds and a free shuttle back to your ship. Barbados is famous for its Golf Courses – particularly at Sandy Lane, its cricket and perhaps take time out to visit Sunbury Plantation House over 300 years old. An unusual souvenir can be found at the post office just inside the cruise terminal – their postage stamp sets make inexpensive unique gifts.

BONAIRE Is part of the Netherlands Antilles group situated just 50 miles off the coast of Venezuela. This rural island is flat and rather unremarkable – but also has the benefit of being relatively unspoilt. Its entire coast is a protected marine park prefect for snorkelling, plus the mangrove swamps are the perfect place for an energetic yet tranquil Kayak adventure taking you back to nature. Whilst this may not sound like much it is one of our most endearing memories of the Caribbean. The ships moor at the quayside which is in the heart of the capital Kralendijk meaning ‘Coral Reef’.

COZUMEL This island is just 12 miles long and situated 20 minutes ferry ride from the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Cozumel is really a staging post for cruise passengers to visit mainland Mexico with its Mayan ruins at Tulum. Cozumel town is lively with its many bars and myriad of shops. Explore the Xel Ha aquatic park with its subterranean rivers, natural pools and sacred Mayan Lagoon. We found the scuba diving here to be the best in Caribbean. The best beach is located in the Punta Sur Ecological Park. Cruise ships moor at the purpose built cruise terminal – which has the obligatory array of jewellers and tourist shops.

Ship Focus When Cunard designed and built Queen Mary 2, they made her the largest, longest, tallest, widest, and most expensive ocean vessel ever built up to that time. She is one of the last of the classic ocean liners and a magnificent vessel. With a passenger capacity of 2,620, QM2’s size allows a great variety of passenger amenities. For those who want to be pampered and rejuvenated, the ship features the Canyon Ranch SpaClub®. Signature touches such as The Commodore Club, The Britannia restaurant, Queens Ball Room and the legendary White Star Service sets this spacious ship apart from others. The Cunard ConneXionsSM is almost like a college at sea, and she even has some features new to cruising such as a planetarium and a look at marine history in the Maritime Quest Exhibit. Guests can even bring their dog along and board him in an onboard kennel (Transatlantic Crossings Only).

Evenings on the Queen Mary 2 are elegant, and the ship plays host to formal gatherings with after dinner entertainment including dancing in the largest ballroom at sea, jazz in the Commodore Club, a casino, cabaret singing in the Chart Room, and West End-calibre shows in the Royal Court Theatre. Some of the traditional Cunard hallmarks are found throughout the Queen Mary 2 - sweeping staircases, soaring public rooms, a grand ballroom, and a 360° promenade deck. A space ratio of 57.25 makes her one of the roomiest vessels anywhere, and the ship has 14 decks of sports facilities, shops, bars, lounges, 5 pools and no fewer than 10 restaurants. With one staff member per couple, a very high level of service can be expected. For guests who prefer a balcony, three-quarters of the QM2 staterooms have them and some of the lavish two-story duplexes even have their own private exercise equipment. Canyon Ranch SpaClub® It is not surprising that one of the most luxurious ocean vessels ever built features a Canyon Ranch spa. This highly acclaimed health resort company has elevated the spa experience to an entirely new level offering

EXCLUSIVE BARGAIN MED CRUISES

FROM ALL INCLUSIVE MED CRUISES 7 Night Holidays with Pullmantur Sovereign These cruises are truly excellent value for money when you consider what is included on one of our favourite ships .These prices include all of your drinks on board as well return flights from London, full board, entertainment and facilities – which really helps you to budget for your holiday and have a great party at low cost. Pullmantur is big in Spain with a huge following – particularly since all cruises include drinks! Jetline Cruise is one of the few cruise specialists who feature this cruise line & we have had huge numbers of our customers giving the company lots of praise. They are the Spanish subsidiary of Royal Caribbean international primarily catering for the Spanish market where only Spanish and English is spoken on board. The Sovereign originally entered service in 1988 as part of the Royal Caribbean International fleet (extensively refurbished in Dec 2004). This ship was the largest afloat at the time and was revolutionary in its design and range of facilities on board. This lead the way for the big ships of today not only for the Royal Caribbean fleet but for all modern cruise liners. The central atrium is impressive with its glass elevators, there are some great entertainment venues including two large entertainment lounges and a theatre. The casino will also keep you occupied at night. There is a wrap around outdoor teak deck for some serious promenading under the stars and choose from formal dining in the main dining room, convenient & extensive buffet dining upstairs adjacent to the pool or in one of the pay for restaurants.
