My name is Jessica Chan, I am a second-year architecture student at the University of Waterloo. The adaptability and functionality of a space is something I am passionate to achieve in my architectural design. As a result, I strive to approach design with an immersive and interactive aspect in hopes to create work which is technologically innovative and socially inspiring.

Equally, the exploration of fabrication methods stimulate and develop my technical abilities and creative design.

hunan house The Tianmen mountains are located in northern Hunan and are home to a hot-humid climate influenced to some extent by the monsoon season. The Hunan House design takes into consideration the need for natural ventilation and utilizes the excess amount of rainwater within the mountains. This off-grid research station is intended to allow botanists to focus on the study of the bonsai tree, which are plentiful in the Bonsai Garden found at the summit of Tianmen Moutain. Designed to encourage natural ventilation and cooling, Hunan House features many passive strategies such as shading, evaporative cooling and a buffer hallway. These strategies, along with the solar water heating system, help to make this off-grid station self-sustainable.

water collection Due to the slant of the 3 roof sections, rainwater will be filtered into the pond in the centre. Then larger contaminants such as leaves and dirt will be filtered out through the debris filter found at the bottom of the pond. After travelling through the debris filter the stormwater enters the stormwater storage tank. As the water tank overflows the pond above it will fill. When the stormwater leaves the tank it will travel through a purifying system where contaminants are released and a softener is added to the water to remove minerals. The water then proceeds to the holding tank for purified water until it is needed either the shower or the sink.

When the water is needed a solar-powered pump pushes the water to its source. If the water needs to be hot it passes through the solar collector which collects and concentrates the sun’s radiation and uses it to warm the water. Cool water is also pumped from the tank to the necessary water sources. The system also houses a composting toilet which requires no water and decomposes waste using aerobic bacteria into a fertilizer the occupants can use.

stasis A material led exploration of string in suspension and tension, developed into an architectural entrance at a local Storefront in Cambridge, Ontario. The threshold acts as a gateway entrance for the Bridge storefront and its gallery program bringing in pedestrians from the street. Two sets of interwoven string held in tension create a small pathway for pedestrians to interact with the rope and enter the store. The strings are held in tension with the counterweight of sketchbooks for display.

acclivity Located at the intersection of Dundas and Sterling in Downtown Toronto, the Acclivity is a community library combined with a children’s play space. To best suit, the steep hill of the site, the design of the library is an extended ramp acting as a continuous floor connecting the top of the hill to the bottom. Situated along the ramp are clusters of pods with different interactive play or reading stations for specific children groups. All pods are connected to a central play structure, where each access point correlates with the children’s development of risk and adventure. The Acclivity is a place for the community to gather and enjoy the dynamic connection of the city with its people.

Theme of Connection Site The building is embedded into the slope and connects the top of the slope to the bottom with the entire floor as a ramp.

Interior/Exterior Through the circulation, individuals on the outside are drawn into the building from the top and bottom.

Caregiver / Child The program of the building is designed in a way that all children can access the main play structure in the middle at different heights depending on their risk development skills. While the caregiver is stationed at the appropriate proximity according to the child’s age.

nesting Throughout this term, I have been investigating the impact of human presence on habitat loss at Toogood Pond. Focusing on avian species, I’ve identified the elements of the mirco-habitats that support specific birds species and their behavious. This ranges from nesting heights, materials and proximity to human activity. By exploring the cohabitation relationships between human and bird, this pavillion is meant to encourage bird nesting amongst it.

bike hub In collaboration with the City of Markham, Markham Cycles is the first community bicycle hub in York Region. It aims to build a cycling culture in Markham by offering free programs and workshops to anyone who is interested in cycling.

The design of the hub shows the vibrant and playful nature of the community. The front design is simple but impactful with the use of bright colours and bold shapes in a retro style.

While the back design includes a variety of cycling activities and people to showcase the diversity of the community.
