from the headmaster I always enjoy the beginning of a new school year as it presents us the opportunity to bring new students into the Rumsey family and integrate them into our close knit and supportive community. This year’s school theme, Stand Up Together, means that we stand up in support of one another as well as for our own beliefs. We lend a helping hand to those who cannot stand on their own, and we uplift and support our community members. This year’s theme is particularly special to me because it is about our community, working together as a collective unit and supporting one another. In our world today, life can be complicated and our students can be exposed to issues that are difficult for them to process and understand. It is our job as educators, leaders, and mentors to help them develop and build a strong foundation of character and a strong system of values. One of our goals at Rumsey is to reinforce in our students the ability to make a positive impact in our community and society at large. We want to help guide our students during this critical time in their lives to find success, overcome obstacles, and learn how to be independent and empathetic contributors to our society. We know that education is a journey, not a destination, as it is constantly evolving. Critical thinking is not just tied to our academic program, it is about personal growth, character growth, and learning how to be a positive influence in the community. Our Community Service Program continues to do just that. Students supported fundraising efforts to help communities and programs outside of the Rumsey family such as the Department of Child and Family Services, local food banks, coastal cleanup efforts, and the continuation of our Card Project. We emphasize the values of Honesty, Kindness, and Respect, and I feel strongly that we cannot just talk about them; we have to make sure our community is practicing these values each and every day to help promote and support our Mission of educating the whole child. Our veteran faculty members serve as mentors to the new faculty and our seniors model their leadership qualities in the classrooms, on the athletic fields, and in the dorms. Our faculty, staff, and students take a tremendous amount of pride in who we are and what we do. We encourage our students to step out of their comfort zones and take risks, try new things, and express themselves through athletics, art, and music – knowing they have a community that supports them. Those are proud moments when we see a student perform in the talent show for the first time or play in their first athletic contest. It can take time and it is a process for our students to gain the confidence they need to experience success and to manage challenges. I ask everyone to think of ways to make a difference within your own communities and join the Rumsey family in thinking critically about ways in which we can all Stand Up Together. Sincerely,

Matthew Hoeniger ’81, P’11, ’15 Headmaster 2 RAREBITS

On December 11 and 12, the Lower School took part in our first Math Mania event. Throughout each morning, mixed age groups of students participated in fun, hands-on activities based around the theme of geometry. Students built cities, identified shapes around campus, created musical shapes, origami hats, symmetric snowflakes, tessellations, and more. On March 27 and 28, the Lower School took part in our second Math Mania event of the school year. Throughout each morning, mixed age groups of students participated in fun, hands-on activities based around the theme of measurement. Lower Schoolers: Collected and analyzed data, deducing how distance and weight affect the rate of pendulum swings. Developed strategies to determine the surface areas and volumes of rectangular solids. Gained a better understanding of how to measure time using analog clocks and stopwatches. Learned ways to measure capacity and temperature while making homemade ice cream and playdoh. Used tape measures, measuring tapes, rulers and meter/ yardsticks to measure a variety of objects in our environment. Played with different types of scales to better understand varying ways to estimate and measure weight.

If you wander around campus you will notice a new addition to the wall outside the Lower School Art Room. During October, in a flurry of painting, 90 Lower School students worked with Mrs. Bender to create a new landscape mural that adorns the art room entrance. The mural depicts the entire campus and came out of a discussion about how to brighten up the walls outside the Lower School classrooms. Mrs. Bender sketched the design on the wall and students collaborated to fill in the design, adding some touches of their own. According to Mrs. Bender, students were especially eager to add a “squabbit”, claiming that the image would be incomplete without a picture of the “tailless squirrel” that has become a much-loved part of our daily lives here at Rumsey.

Jump Rope for Heart! Lower School Students Jump in Support of the American Heart Association February 22, 2019 Throughout the month of February and in celebration of National Heart Health Month, Lower School students polished their jump roping skills and discussed the importance of fitness and cardiovascular health in their Physical Education and Health classes. This heart-healthy study culminated on the morning of February 22nd with our annual Jump Rope for Heart event to benefit the American Heart Association. Students cycled through a series of eight stations in which they jumped continuously for one hour. This year, the Lower School raised $9,124 – a new record. Thank you to all who participated! The support of Rumsey's family and friends has once again helped fund the American Heart Association's life-saving efforts in research and education. Community Service PROGRAM

Part of Rumsey Hall’s Mission Statement includes educating its students to become contributing members of a community. Through hands-on experiences, students develop interpersonal and professional skills while positively impacting the people and foundations they are helping. The Community Service Program also acts to enrich a sense of awareness, compassion, and self-efficacy in Rumsey Hall students. Community Service teaches students how to contribute. In this manner we are aiding a child’s ability to develop autonomy, identity, and the value of interpersonal connections. In the Fall of 2018, a group of students worked with City Seed in New Haven CT. They were asked to help a refugee from Afghanistan help prepare foods to sell at holiday farmers' markets. Over lunch, they engaged in a conversation with the chef, who explained why she left Afghanistan, the sadness she felt being far from home, and the importance of her community working together, which brought her happiness. Some students shared that the conversation motivated them to take more advantage of the opportunities offered to them by Rumsey being so far from home themselves. Others were motivated to continue with community service events, while others simply called their families. The student debrief was a tender moment that pushed all ten students toward 18 Rarebits

Below Right: The Challenge 20/20 Class is a senior elective that encourages students to be leaders within their communities. Ben Weiss '18 designed and produced the buttons to wear for the day.

self-reliance, to embrace their heritage, and to teach them just how connected we all really are. Weekly trips are planned as part of the normal weekend format. Most trips are scheduled for Sundays. The School’s service trips are volunteer only, with no requirements for graduation. Students take it upon themselves to sign-up and then give up their one free weekend day in service to others. What is the value of 1,000 hours? It’s twenty-five 40-hour work weeks, and at the state minimum wage, that equals $10,100. For the agencies Rumsey works with, there is no value equal to their gratitude. The agencies served depend on volunteers to ensure their missions are realized; however, the value for our students is much deeper. Through service, our students have access to experiential learning, are able to practice altruism and compassion, learn the importance of being present, and improve their sense of happiness; all pieces of Rumsey’s intention to educate the whole child. FACULTY PROFILE

What first drew you to Rumsey? I attended a boarding high school, Pomfret School, and always had the dream of working in a private school setting after college. In all honesty, I never thought about it after I graduated with my Masters in Education from Sacred Heart University. I truly thought public education was best for me at that time in my life. After starting a family and being out for a few years to stay home with my girls, coming back to work was difficult. My girls started playing sports and we had hockey practice weekly at Rumsey. I met the staff and started to fall in love with the campus. It began to feel like my high school all over again. I heard about an opening here and thought “long shot” but I’ll try it. After meeting everyone during my interview process and the “home-like” feeling, I left and prayed that this would be a place to call my home for the rest of my career. How did you approach this opportunity to start a brand new

position as the Lower School Skills Teacher?

Having the opportunity to work in a new position was scary at first as I didn’t know what to expect with the students or what the teachers

TIFFANY ROMANIELLO

Heading up a new program at Rumsey

were expecting of me. My passion is reading, and I love to help teach kids how to read, offer strategies to assist in this process, and instill a love of reading in them. Entering the school year I had ideas of what I was going to do to help but I quickly found it’s an ever-growing position based on the needs of each child. From week to week, changes are happening in my curriculum. I love the challenge I face each week in supporting the development of my students. This position allows me to get to know each of the Lower School teachers and all the students in the Lower School. Getting to work with each teacher is amazing. They each bring a variety of skills that I can learn from and build my “teacher bag” of tricks. I love getting to know each of the students as well. They also bring a different skill or ability to the table and make me a better teacher. I love having the opportunity to build this position and work on the skills for each of the students. As a new faculty member to Rumsey Hall, what experience this year has really touched you or made you feel welcomed here at Rumsey?

Coming to a new school as a new faculty member can be scary, but Rumsey’s new faculty orientation gave me the chance to meet existing members of the school, and new ones as well. We had a variety of activities to accomplish together as new members of the community. We went to Judea Garden to help with the local gardens, and we went out to Treasure Island to work together on a challenge. This was so much fun for me. I loved learning about the school and the community as a whole, the message that is being sent to the students. I remember coming home and saying to my husband, I had the best time and can’t wait to start my career teaching here. What are some experiences you’re looking forward to in the future here at Rumsey?

Rumsey is a place to call home for my family and me. My two daughters Brooklynn (8), and Piper (6) will be entering school here for the 2019-2020 school year. I look forward to watching their growth happen 20 Rarebits

(academically, emotionally, artistically, and athletically). I’m excited to be able to have the opportunity to be a full-time employee of Rumsey as the Lower School Skills Teacher and build this position for the students. What are some joys and challenges you face working with students each day?

The challenges I think are obvious ones, making sure each and every child is reaching their full potential as a student. Each child is their own unique individual and learns differently from others. As a Lower School Skills Teacher, it’s my job to help the students find their best learning style. There are many, many joys I experience as a teacher. One of the most amazing feelings is watching student growth, seeing their smiling faces when they finally use a strategy they were taught. When they can read a book that was on their wish list, they come running to me and say, “Mrs. Romaniello, I read all my sight words last night, and I’m ready to move onto the next list.” What do you want people to know about you? I’m a local teacher, living in New Milford, with a young family. Most of my siblings are close by, and we love to have weekend family dinners. There are a lot of cousins (14) for my girls to play with, so family time is extremely important to us. My husband is a Lieutenant in the Greenwich Fire Department and volunteers at the Northville Fire House in New Milford where he has been a volunteer for close to 31 years. We love to stay involved in the community. As a family, we love hiking and camping as well as traveling the East Coast in our camper and enjoying nature. I have two Great Danes that travel with us and love life on the road. I am a former ice hockey goalie and now have my oldest daughter involved in ice hockey. I love watching the development of the girls' programs around CT. I started playing on a boys' team and eventually switched to a girls' program where I traveled to tournaments, building lifelong friendships. It’s really enjoyable to watch my daughter go through similar experiences. I’m slowly learning about snowboarding and how to teach my youngest who has dreams of being a halfpipe snowboarder.

“After Rumsey I went to Exeter Academy and then Harvard College. I have three children who live around the country. After living in Chappaqua, NY for 40 years, I am now living in Rhinebeck, NY. My first wife Sheila died in 2001, and in 2004 I married Susie who I had known when we were teenagers. We're enjoying good health and have a happy life. It has been fun to watch Rumsey’s growth and good performance since moving from Cornwall when our Class of 1945 had about 10 students, all boys. Here’s to many more good years for Rumsey Hall!”

“Retirement is treating us very well, we’re busier than ever with painting, music, grandchildren, and travel. My singing group, Boston Saengerfest Mens’ Chorus, will perform in Madrid and Barcelona this May. I recently spent time with my former classmate Maddie Burke ’54 and her husband Roger. It was wonderful to catch up a bit and share memories of Rumsey days. We were very lucky to have been there.”

I have such fond memories of my years at Rumsey and still value the relationships that I made while I was there. "What is up with me is my new book, Rock Around The Block. It's currently being crowdfunded for publication and that is the only place it's currently available. It will eventually be on Amazon. Even though I didn't want to be at any boarding school, there is a short chapter on my time at Rumsey, which I now remember fondly, including a few mentions of how my roommate and Sherry's nephew, the late Johnny Troy and I gamed the system. There are also a few pictures of the School, including my graduation picture and my 1956 prom photo with Lisa Sherry and I."

“Celebrating 35 years of marriage to Sue and 25 years working at New Haven Moving Equipment this year. Our son Sam is a UConn graduate and working full time as a tax analyst. We always look forward to our occasional trips through the Rumsey campus, usually on a motorcycle. We would always welcome contact from any Rumsey alumni. It's been 50 years since I first went to Rumsey while John SR was still Headmaster. I was already there when Spooner showed up. It took us a year or so, but we eventually turned Rick into a great educator! I want to wish Peace and Happiness to all the current and former Rumsey family!”

CHINESE NEW YEAR – YEAR OF THE PIG –

The annual celebration of the Chinese New Year in mid-winter is a tradition that allows students and faculty to embrace a foreign culture and celebrate Rumsey’s diversity. On Wednesday, February 6th, families from China traveled to campus for the fourth consecutive year to help organize the festivities. After an afternoon of hand-rolling dumplings and preparing other Chinese delicacies such as Peking Duck, the Chinese New Year dinner was served to the entire boarding community. The parents decorated Farmen Hall with paper lanterns, paper cuttings and couplets to create an authentic backdrop for a memorable meal. The students enjoyed hearing their fellow classmates and their parents explain the Chinese calendar, the lore behind zodiac animal signs representing each year, the significance of ‘the year of the pig’ and the symbolism of good fortune and joy found in the color red. Rumsey extends its sincere gratitude to the families who traveled to campus to share their holiday and a delicious and unique meal with the School community.
