from the headmaster As I take a moment to reflect on this past year, I continue to remain grateful and inspired by the loyalty, the generosity, and the many ways our community finds to support our School and expand our students’ opportunities and growth. Each of you help make Rumsey Hall a nurturing, supportive environment where our students’ full range of abilities, creative gifts and compassion can grow. Our Mission and School values of Honesty, Kindness and Respect guide all that we do here at Rumsey Hall. Each day our work is dedicated to educating the whole child. We are committed to ensuring that each of our student’s experience here at Rumsey Hall is guided by the practice of effort, not the expectation of perfection. We value equally the lessons that take place inside our classrooms as well as outside of them. This past year, we continued to add and improve the educational opportunities we provide here at Rumsey Hall School. What follows is a brief report of these opportunities that your generosity allowed for. Additional playground equipment was added to the new Explorer Dome, which provides students of all ages an opportunity to test and develop their gross motor skills in countless ways. There is also a new outdoor learning area that provides students with a space in which to study, learn and explore their environment. This space includes a weather station, raised garden-beds, bird houses and feeders, tables and seating. As a school, we continued our speakers, performances and weekend programming. The following are highlights of those visits to our campus last year: Richard Guerry, the founder of the Institute for Responsible Online and Cell-Phone Communication (IROC2). He is a nationally renowned expert in educating students and parents on the relevant issues surrounding digital responsibility and solutions. He offered guidance on how to prevent and avoid digital pitfalls through a dynamic and age appropriate program. Mark Tyler Nobleman joined us to offer creative writing workshops with our Upper School English classes. He is the author of Bill the Boy Wonder: The Secret Co-Creator of Batman, Boys of Steel: The Creators of Superman, and Brave Like My Brother. The Viola Question, the premiere improv comedy group at Yale University, performed for our students, as did Take Five, Kenyon College’s a cappella group, where May Chen ’12, was one of the performers. Weekend Art Workshops were offered on Sunday afternoons to expand our arts offerings and weekend activities. These workshops included jewelry making, metal shop, and basic crafts. Additionally, in these weekend workshops, a faculty and student led effort was initiated to create greeting cards for hospitalized children.

Our Robotics Program launched the Lego Space Challenge, creating robots and writing code to embark on an imaginative scenario where they rescued a man lost in space, raised a satellite dish, and sent a rover to collect resources. The School was also able to purchase Spheros (spherical robots) which are white orbs wrapped in polycarbonate, capable of rolling around and are controlled by a smartphone or tablet. Students learn basic coding and sequencing to program these robots. The Computer Skills course now includes a graphic design component. Studying the use of lines, shapes, textures and color, students learn how to manipulate images, words, and shapes in Google Drawings. We created a Lower School Skills teaching position. This person works closely with our faculty to identify and support students in their Language Arts and Mathematical development. In addition, we have hired a new Director of Health and Wellness who works closely with our students in both the Lower and Upper School, giving guidance not only to students, but parents and faculty to help ensure the mental health and well being of all of our students. The passion, commitment and caring of students, alumni, faculty, staff and parents suggest to me that service to others is not a hollow phrase meant to make people feel good; rather something ingrained in the bedrock of the Rumsey Hall community that encourages us to be a school that values service and community involvement. This letter is an opportunity to express my appreciation to all those whose service and commitment to Rumsey Hall is reflected in the following pages. The financial results are important, but this report also tells a story of hard work, dedication, vision, commitment, and generosity. I would like to thank our talented and dedicated faculty and staff, our Board of Trustees led by Board Chair Nicholas Solley ’64, and the countless volunteers who support and sustain Rumsey Hall’s culture and commitment to providing an environment that puts Effort, Family and Community at the forefront. It is with these contributions that we are able to sustain a special place, a special school, and a special home. Sincerely,

from the board chair It gives me great pleasure to address the Rumsey Hall community for the first time as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. I have been on the Board, without interruption, for 30 years and was elected as permanent Chair at our April, 2018 meeting. I have never been more committed to the exceptional educational experience that Rumsey Hall provides than I am today. My family has deep roots at Rumsey. My sister Nancy began at the School in the Fall of 1951, I started in 1956, and my brother Stephen followed in 1959. Three cousins also attended Rumsey and my mother and my aunt were both Rumsey Language Skills teachers for several decades. I was asked to join the Rumsey Board in 1989 after having served on a separate Development Committee in the early 1980’s. Consequently, the Solley family has experienced the wisdom and leadership of six Headmasters, each of whom have contributed to the School’s growth and identity. While Rumsey Hall has been an important focus of my life, my roles on various Washington town committees, and my part in Solley Brothers, my family business, have given me a deep understanding of both our local and school communities. I am a third generation resident of Washington and for the past 45 years my brother, Stephen Solley ’68, and I have operated the family farm, supplying quality hay forage to the horse trade. In the past, we had a separate excavation company, an experience that taught me the fundamentals of basic house construction, land improvement and landscape design. My essential understandings of property development have allowed me to play a key role on Rumsey’s Board, beginning in the late 80’s when the Board realized that the infrastructure of the School was aging and building maintenance had been deferred for many years. It was at this juncture that the then Board of Trustees, headed by P.W. Tate Brown, took this opportunity to create a Buildings and Property Committee and named me as Chair. This marked the beginning of a 30-year process of rebuilding the Rumsey Hall School. First, “the unseen infrastructure” was upgraded; septic systems, water lines, and three-phase electricity was brought in from Washington Depot; then over the next 25-years dorms were rebuilt, a new dining hall and a hockey rink were constructed, the administration building was razed and rebuilt doubling the original size, three new classroom buildings were added and the gym space was increased complete with a new auditorium. In 1999, the school purchased 42 acres from our neighbors, the Bronsons, which allowed a renovated farmhouse to become the new Headmaster’s house. Two new athletic fields and three new tennis courts were also added. Our most recent, and exciting school acquisition, just happened this past June when Headmaster Matt Hoeniger and I negotiated again with the Bronson family to purchase the neighboring 83-acre valley property to allow for the possibility of further expansion for faculty housing, athletic fields and maintenance facilities. I am proud to add that this 30-year long $40 million-plus campus investment has been done with no long term debt. This is an achievement that was made possible by the strong commitment of Rumsey Alumni and Trustees, Parents both current and past, Washington townspeople and the School’s Long Range Planning Committee. So as your newly elected Board Chair, I bring to the Rumsey community a veteran Board member’s experience and dedication to Rumsey’s Mission and growth. I give my support to our first class faculty and staff, and my assurances for a financially secure institution that is overseen by a dedicated Board of Trustees. nick cornell ‘08: the commencement address
Thank you Mr. Hoeniger for the very kind introduction and for inviting me to speak today; it is an honor and a privilege to be here. As mentioned, my name is Nick Cornell and I am the Permanent Class President of the Class of 2008. Some of you are from as far away as New Zealand, Korea and Mexico. I, however, had the privilege .... or the curse, of being a student that grew up right here on Romford Road. Rumsey has been a fundamental part of my life. My father, uncles, aunt, brother and sister all graduated from Rumsey, many of whom are here today. My dynamic cousins John and Mary Houldin, or as our family calls them “The Twins”, will also join us today as Rumsey alumni. I am lucky that my grandparents are also here today. Year after year, they have sat through countless Rumsey graduations since 1974. They have all offered me similar advice regarding my speech today that boils down to the following: please keep it short. I’ll do my best to fulfill their wishes. Being a graduate of Rumsey Hall is something I am extremely proud of and I am sure you all will be too. I am so excited to be back at Rumsey today, because this is the place where my story started, just like all of you. I assume my experience here was not much different than all of yours; the old
Rumsey Bell rang at the end of each academic period and Rumsey athletic victories, the loudest ring echoing through the valley after a win against Indian Mountain School. We all memorized declamations each spring from our favorite authors, poets or journalists and recited them in front of English class or Morning Meeting. Mr. Craft led clef club and the annual musical; doing his best to develop eager Justin Timberlake wannabes like myself. As it was in my case, there is sometimes just no hope. We all swam in the river on the first hot day of spring and then uncomfortably sat in senior square soaked in our only clothes. And finally, the annual senior trip was filled with amazing memories and an overdose of sugar from the candy bought at Six Flags. However... some things are bound to change. Mr. Perreault, who was our Athletic Trainer and a bachelor right out of college, is now married with three children, two of whom are students. New Dorm was one of the oldest dorms on campus and was a relic from when my dad was a student. Now that it has been rebuilt, it actually lives up to its name. We had chalkboards rather than SmartBoards and we had to travel to The Gunnery or Taft for hockey practice due to the fact that Lufkin Rink had not yet been built. Mr. Waller was not faculty, but a classmate and great friend of mine whom we nicknamed the Wallabeast, and yes, he also cried at Varsity Banquet like all of you seniors did last Friday evening. And last but certainly not least, I do hear that with the new dining hall, the food offerings are a bit different than what we used to have. On a monthly basis, we were served fried dough, all-you-can eat pizza and, of course, we had fresh chocolate chip cookies each and every day at recess, which I was always first in line for. Unfortunately, this didn’t serve me too well in the weight department. On a regular basis, I indulged in probably far too many cookies. This led to my dad deciding I needed some exercise intervention. His answer to me burning a few extra weekly calories was in the form of dropping me at the end of Romford Road and then continuing to follow me in our family car down the road back to our home, which is just beyond Cottage. Some might call this parental encouragement; I would argue it was more like torture. Geared up with my first generation iPod Nano, I remember listening to a hit song while I was at Rumsey called “No Air” by Chris Brown and Jordan Sparks. The lyrics of the main chorus which asks the listener, “Tell me how I’m supposed to breathe with no Annual Report 2018 7
air” rang a bit too true as I was already winded just a quarter of a mile into this run. Mr. Ketchum and Mr. Kolpak, do these lyrics exemplify ‘irony’ or a ‘coincidence’? As I ran, with the low-beam headlights of my father’s Acura lighting my way, I had absolutely no idea how I was going to make it all the way back to our house. I would periodically pause to look up and find a tree in the distance to focus on. As I struggled to catch my breath and get rid of the stitch in my side, Mr. Tuff’s voice would echo in my head from advice he’d given me one afternoon during tennis practice. Let me give you some background to this advice – while I was a member of the Varsity B Tennis team, Mr. Tuff decided our warm-up one day would be a run to Beaver Pond and back to the tennis courts. For those unfamiliar with Beaver Pond, it’s a picturesque trail that runs through the woods and along the old Washington railroad track

that is around one and a half miles round trip. I think Mr. Tuff could see the look of terror in my eyes when he gave us this seemingly easy task. He laughed a little and gave me the following advice, “Nick, just focus on making it to the next tree and once you get there, find the next one to focus on, you will be back here in no time”. And from that day on, I did exactly that when I’d be forced into cardio by my dad. Each and every time I’d run, I’d find my tree to focus on, just ahead, not too far, not too close, and I’d get there. This small piece of advice while a bit sappy (pun intended), has stayed with me throughout my life to where I live now in New York City, and ironically loving to run each day in Central Park, not coincidentally the only place in the city that is home to an abundance of trees. This also reminds me of where you all are right now. Right at the start of the next exciting journey in your life, ready to get set and run. Whether you’re looking forward to the run, or you’re feeling as though someone is chasing behind you with headlights, all you need to focus on is the next tree. The next event, the next moment, the next challenge, and the next triumph is only a few strides ahead. The time spent in between each tree will bring you many joys, lots of achievements and successes, but will also be combined with many hardships and challenges to overcome. Rumsey has given you the foundation and the tools you need to be successful for this run, to

overcome any obstacles and appreciate all the successes. You have been given the study skills, learned the proper etiquette, and what I would consider to be the most important, you are a part of the Rumsey family which is filled with lifelong friends to celebrate your successes with and to lean on when times are tough. Just ask Wallerbeast if you don’t believe me. As you continue your jog through life, it’s important to remember the many lessons you learned here, the small moments and the challenges you overcame. These have helped you overcome adversity and leave a positive mark on the trail. I remember being in your position, not sure where the journey would take me next. My advice to you is to look forward to this run, keep a positive attitude and remain calm knowing that you get to choose the course. You get to choose the next tree to focus on and determine

what this run will look and feel like. Explore new paths and take big risks. Before you know it, you will be where I am, at the beginning of a career. You will get there by discovering and developing your passions, evaluating your strengths and weaknesses and fostering great relationships with family and friends. Albert Einstein once said, “If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal.” Without goals, you are destined to become lost. I wish you all the best success and I am confident you will be proud to consider yourselves Blue Dogs for life. Never stop learning, enjoy each moment and always have your next tree in focus. Upper West Side residents Amie, principal at JAG interior design, and husband Louis Kreisberg, a principal at Pioneer Wealth Partners, are parents to student Jack ‘18. Amie is a former Board Member of The Town School, NYC as well as Breakthrough New York, a non-profit serving low income students in preparation for college. The couple have three other children: Alexa (currently at Temple Medicine), Gavin (currently at Wharton Business School) and Jeremy Kreisberg (University of Michigan, Harvard Law School). Amie attended the University of Texas at Austin and graduated from SMU. The Kreisberg Family are large supporters of the Foundation for Fighting Blindness.

With over 15 years of entrepreneurial experience under his belt, Manuel has become a driving force behind the Fintech movement in the Dominican Republic. His innovative work applying technological solutions to the financial sector led to his development of the first mobile payment platform with inclusive financial services in the country. Manuel was recently elected as president of the Dominican Association of Fintech Companies. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Dominican Association of Young Entrepreneurs and as a member of the ICT Committee for the American Chamber of Commerce in the Dominican Republic.

Rumsey Hall bids farewell to Trustee Mary Barbour P’14 - expressing deep appreciation for her dedication and tireless support. Mary joined the Board in 2013 and served Rumsey until leaving in 2018. Initially, Mary served on the Development Committee. Soon after, she was asked to join the Endowment Advisory Committee, Committee on Trustees and the Finance Committee. Mary most recently chaired the Endowment Advisory Committee as well as serving on the Governance Committee, the Finance Committee, and the Committee on Trustees.

Gary Cole P’01 joined Rumsey’s Board in 2002 and served as Board Chair from 2006-2010. He took a brief hiatus before rejoining the Board in 2012. Gary played significant leadership roles on the Finance, Investment, Governance, and Endowment Committees and retired from the Board in April of 2018. Rumsey is indebted to Gary for his longtime commitment and support and for all that he has done to advance the Mission of the School.

We express our deep appreciation for the dedicated work of Trustee Frank “Buzz” Gavel ’78 P’13,’15. Frank first joined the Board in 2002 until 2008; then rejoining in 2010. Utilizing his financial background and expertise, he served on several committees for the School – ranging from Long Range Planning, Chair of Finance, Audit Committee Chair and Endowment Advisory Committee. His most recent role was Interim Vice Chairman. Frank’s original departure date from the Board was April 2016 but he graciously agreed to stay on as an active all-inspiring Board member until this past April 2018. We thank Frank for his steadfast commitment to Rumsey Hall.

Support Rumsey Students Tomorrow The Rumsey Hall School Heritage Society
Planned gifts to Rumsey Hall School enable you to create a legacy contribution that will have a powerful impact beyond your lifetime – securing the chance for a new generation of students to experience a Rumsey education. Bequests and other forms of planned philanthropy invested in the Endowment remain a permanent part of the School’s financial foundation. A growing number of constituents in the Rumsey Family are including the School in their long-range planning to make a lasting difference. Bequests or gifts may be made through your estate by including a provision in your will or living trust, or by naming Rumsey as a beneficiary of a Retirement Plan or Life Insurance Policy. The amount gifted to the School can be expressed as a dollar amount or as a percentage of the assets to be allocated. No bequest is too small. A Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT) provides donors as beneficiaries of annual income payments during their lifetimes. The remaining assets will be invested in Rumsey’s Endowment in perpetuity, or for a designated restricted purpose or scholarship. A CRT is an excellent vehicle for gifts of appreciated stock or property, since the trust is tax exempt and does not incur capital gains tax when assets are sold. Cynthia Stubbs-Hill, or as many know her, Mrs. Hill, has worked in the Lower School at Rumsey Hall for over two decades. In that time she has shaped countless lives at the school. Cynthia lives in Kent with her husband Hugh. Her daughter Arvolyn is an alumna and graduated in 2004. This past summer, in the August issue of Litchfield Magazine, Cynthia was honored as one of the 25 most influential people in Litchfield Hills. It was well deserved.

A Long, Happy Career at Rumsey
You have been at Rumsey for over 20 years. What have been
the most impactful moments you have had over that time
working with Rumsey Hall students?
Taking the kids on field trips. To educate a child you need to relate learning to real life experience. Being able to take students to the Yale Peabody Museum, the Pratt Institute or the Sharon Audobon Society has been incredible, for students to learn, and for me to be a part of that process. At the end of each year, I do a project: Children Around the World. It’s very important for kids to know about other cultures, places and people, and the project enables the students to see how other children are treated and educated around the world and relate it to their own experience. I also want to say that my entire tenure at Rumsey has had a meaningful impact on me. Rumsey is like a family, they helped raise my child, and I have grown through being here. Your daughter Arvolyn graduated from Rumsey. What was that experience like having her at school?
Having Arvolyn (Class of 2004) attend Rumsey was a gift. I was able to see my daughter grow and experience things every day. Not every working mother is able to do that, but being a parent and being at the School you are provided the opportunity to see your child and to know what is going on in their world. I truly feel blessed to have had Arvolyn here. Arvolyn was able to experience diversity, culture, skiing and more opportunities because of the community at Rumsey. The people at Rumsey, particularly Whitney Ryan, enabled Arvolyn to go to Wyonegonic Camp where she enjoyed swimming and camping. What are some of the challenges and joys you face working with students everyday?
The challenge I think is obvious: making sure kids have an adequate education to function in society and to be compassionate human beings. All children should know how to read and I am developing their skills while also teaching them to be a well-rounded person. I also foster 34 RAREBITS
understandings of a student’s own culture and the culture of others.
There are many postive things – it is a fabulous thing to be around children because they are so full of joy and creativity and have incredible imaginations. Kids have this pure energy and delight all day long. At times, it can be challenging but they are wonderful beings to spend the day with because of their energy. What advice would you give to current students, and young alumni interested in pursuing teaching?
Make sure you like kids. In life, you really have to like what you are doing. Because it’s not just a job, for me teaching is a lifestyle. It takes patience and is something you should be passionate about. Perhaps, not so widely known, is your love and support of the arts. What sparks that love of the arts and how do you incorporate it in the classroom?
Art has been a thread in my life since I was a child. My mother was very creative, my brother was an artist, my sister was an artist. My mother died when I was young, but she was so creative. My mother didn’t paint or anything like that, but there was such beauty and innovation in the way she would cook and bring us together. As a result my greatest passion is finding, helping and supporting artists. That is why I am on the Northwest Council for the Arts. In my home I have more art than I do furniture! I am a big advocate of the arts. My favorite mediums are painting and collage. In the classroom I have led watercolor, collage, origami, knitting, landscape painting, and woodworking as afternoon activities. I also invited Alicia Mordenti P’22, ’23, ’26 (and wife of faculty member Sean Kinsella) to teach my class how to do “air painting”, which involves seeing and painting the scene with your mind’s eye. (Cynthia has just announced that this will be her last year teaching at Rumsey Hall as she will officially retire in June 2019. We’re going to miss her terribly!)

The weather was picturesque when they arrived, and students immediately jumped out of the bus, eager to play spike ball, badminton, and beach volleyball. Some students enjoyed peaceful activities such as fishing, sailing and paddle boarding. Day two was spent at Six Flags New England where the group was split between those brave enough to try the roller coaster, Superman, and those who preferred arcade games. The trip concluded with dozens of card games and ping pong tournaments, and some students even dared to play Ga Ga Ball in the rain. Each night ended with s’mores around a campfire.

Rumsey Circle

The spirit of Rumsey Hall is rooted in its family atmosphere, a nurturing home away from home. While Rumsey’s faculty challenge and inspire students both in and out of the classroom, there is another
group of individuals committed to the School and its mission—the Rumsey Circle. In bygone years, the Rumsey Circle, comprised of dedicated parents and grandparents, organized various events designed to bring the Rumsey community together and, in certain instances, to raise valuable funds for the School. Past events included the annual Spring Luncheon and Fashion Show/Boutique fundraiser, the Tex-Mex Family Supper hosted on the Friday evening before Spring Parents’ Weekend, and the annual Book Fair in May held in Rumsey’s Library. As the needs of the School have shifted over time, so has the role of the Rumsey Circle. Some of their earlier activities have ceased, but others, like the annual Auction fundraiser in the fall, continue to thrive. First held in 1985, the Auction’s proceeds support the students and faculty, as well as the programs that enrich and strengthen the Rumsey community’s shared experience at the School. Many of the Auction’s successes can be attributed to the Lynette Cornell FP’72, ’74, ’84, ’86 and Former Trustee Judith NaviaAuchincloss FP’87 who co-chaired the event for 17 years. When the Fall Term starts to wind down, members of the Rumsey Circle assist with the annual holiday card mailing and then gather to assemble the traditional packages of cookies and other sweet treats on which the faculty have graciously relied to fuel them as they grade students’ exams. Come spring, the Rumsey Circle oversees the refreshment tents during Track & Field Day, serving snacks and beverages provided by the Dining Hall to feed and hydrate the competing students. Today, the Rumsey Circle continues to evolve, adding more and more dedicated parents to the ranks who are willing to contribute their time and energy to the School. The Rumsey Circle Parents Association, as the group is now known, meets monthly to stay apprised of the day-to-day activities that make up life here on campus. As the School communicates its needs and the parents share their interests, opportunities for parent involvement grow and develop, from engaging in outreach to new Rumsey families to planning the Lower School Carnival at the end of the academic year. “In 2014 my wife Donna and I purchased Vagabond Ranch on which we are now retired. Vagabond has a huge history at Rumsey by virtue of its relationship with Charlie Pavek, a towering personality. Josh moved to Milwaukee, WI in July and started a new position as global category manager for Rexnord Corporation, an industrial machinery manufacturer.
TIMOTHY KNAUTH ‘76 Timothy and his wife live a stone’s throw from the Nautilus Museum and Submarine base in New London, CT. He recently found himself in West Sussex, England where he discovered this 1,500 year old Yew tree, in the Warblington churchyard.

“I’m still operating my internet company on Cape Cod and finding it hard to believe that my Rumsey Class of ‘59 was also 59 years ago. For the second year in a row, I visited friends and family in Ekaterinburg, Russia. I went to California with my son Nick in January and visited some of my former clients from rock groups I worked with in the 1960s. I plan to return to Russia in June and spend another month there visiting Nick and some of the former exchange students I have hosted over the years.”

I was lucky enough to travel there this past April, just in time for peak Cherry Blossom season. I have also signed a record deal with universal distribution to Russia/Europe, and I’m currently awaiting my trip to Russia for my first line of concerts! This has been a dream of mine since participating in Rumsey theatre productions. I couldn’t have done it without Mr. Clayton Ketchum, Dr. Ros Craft and Mr. John Craft.”

TOM FARMEN COMES BACK TO CAMPUS FOR A BOOK READING Rumsey welcomed Headmaster Emeritus Tom Farmen back to campus to share a reading from his newly released book, Bessie’s Story: Watching the Lights Go Out, an inspiring story – much of which took place right here on Rumsey’s campus – about a charming, brave, unpretentious chocolate Lab who gradually loses her eyesight. The author chronologically leads the reader from the original diagnosis of terminal blindness for his beloved four-year-old pet through the two-and-a-half-year transition to sightlessness. In the process, Bessie unwittingly becomes an expert mentor and teacher for the high-wire act of growing older with grace and optimism. Both the Lower and Upper School attended the reading, and while all were excited to see Mr. and Mrs. Farmen, the real star of the day was Bessie, who won everyone’s hearts with her kind and playful spirit.

2 Ben Tuff raised $10,000 by competing in the Swim Around Key West in Florida. Ben finished in just over 5 Hours and 30 Minutes and earned second place in his age group. 3 Peter Linn ‘10 took a road trip this summer from Hamburg, Germany to Venice, Italy, stopping in Munich, Milan, Monaco, and the Cinque Terre along the way. “It was a blast and an unforgettable experience! It was a trip I’ve been planning since I was 14 years old with a childhood friend.” Peter is now a teacher at Rumsey, and in the photograph is his younger brother Uli Linn (Class of 2024). 4 Chris Dyball graduated with a Masters Degree in Education from Post University with a concentration in learning design and technology.

We chatted about our trip, the volunteering we did and talked about Rumsey donating soccer balls (thanks to Jay Przygocki and Liz Butler), community service, tech-free time and other aspects of Rumsey.
