In short, there is only one street that offers visitors the feeling they are worlds away from ordinary life—and that is Worth Avenue.

The merchants of Worth Avenue are delighted you are visiting us and are committed to giving you the best in customer service. For more than 100 years, service has been our gold standard, and it’s a value we hold dear to this day. We also want you to feel at home on our beautiful street, and we’ll do anything we can to answer your questions, point you to a great lunch spot, or give you some neighborly pointers (we’re good at that).

Most of all, we want you to know that we value your patronage as much as we cherish this charming street. There is only one Worth Avenue—and we know you are going to love it.

PARKING IS PLENTIFUL. Historic Worth Avenue is a street of dreams, and parking is a breeze. Valet parking is available at the Apollo parking lot, just north of Worth Avenue, off Hibiscus Avenue, and at the parking garage, at 150 Worth Ave., just across from the beach. Plentiful two-hour parking spaces are available on Worth Avenue itself, and two-hour metered parking can be found on Peruvian Avenue (one block north of Worth Avenue).

If you use one of our parking lots, be sure to ask when you are shopping to have your ticket validated by participating merchants. Please visit our website, worth-avenue.com, for our calendar of events, merchandise and news.

Clean Eating: Palm Beach Restaurants That Make It Worth It If there’s anything more in demand in Palm Beach these days than exquisite food, it’s a beach-ready body. Luckily for us foodies, local chefs are catching on to the trend of clean eating to help all of us achieve our healthy goals. These brilliant chefs are coming up with recipes (and spoiler alert, even a cocktail!) that please our palates as well as our diets.

Take, for instance, Chef Kevin Knieriemen, the Chef de Cuisine at Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa’s Breeze Ocean Kitchen. Knieriemen recognizes the clean-eating trend is becoming “increasingly popular” so he’s incorporated at least four different dishes on his menu that will satisfy diners—without the extra calories.

The locally caught ceviche starts with the catch of the day, so guests can be assured that it’s completely fresh and never frozen. Mixed with the dish is passion fruit, avocado and jalapeños—sweet, spicy and undoubtedly on trend. If you’re the back-to-basics type, Knieriemen offers a crudité platter full of locally sourced veggies and a cannellini bean dip. At Breeze, even your main dish can be “clean,” a flavorful tuna poké bowl with sticky rice, cucum-

bers, scallions, soybeans, wakame, sprouts, avocado and tempura crispies.

Clean-eating meat-free diners can enjoy more Knieriemen deliciousness with the vegetable and black bean burger—with or without the bun.

To sum up his clean eating philosophy, Knieriemen says he chooses ingredients that are “limited in refined grains, salt and sugar, and are still able to provide a delicious dining experience.” With that promise, you’ll definitely lick your plate clean.

This kind of fresh approach to food aligns with other trends, like kale, which is still holding steady as a top-ranking green these days. Chef John Scoles at Ta-boo makes great use of it in his Manchego and kale salad, adorned with pepitos and sun-dried cranberries and topped with a light white balsamic.

Ta-boo’s (ahi-grade) tuna martini, one of Scoles’ favorite dishes, is garnished with pickled ginger and crème fraiche.

Scoles says clean eating starts with keeping things simple. “You should be able to look at the ingredients and instantly recognize what each one is,” he notes. “I want to know exactly what I’m putting in my mouth.”

That’s why he is dedicated to working with local vendors with identifiable sources and farm-fresh ingredients. “I aim to serve only the freshest ingredients, full of aroma and vibrant colors,” he says. When the chef makes your food sound like fine art, you better be ready to dive in—guilt-free.

Sometimes, when it comes to eating clean, you need to start with your own backyard—which is exactly what The Colony does. The herbs in its dishes come directly from the hotel’s own garden. Aside from housemade smoothies and açaí bowls for breakfast, diners who appreciate gluten-free dishes will be delighted by the cauliflower steak. Served pan-seared with cannellini beans, tomato, fresh herbs and lemon confit, it’s the type of guilt-free steak that you can really sink your teeth into.

The integrity of the menu at The Colony is just as important as the hotel’s history, according to General Manager Thomas List, who says, “At The Colony, we use only locally sourced and fresh ingredients that support a simple and healthy approach to dining. Santa Claus and his elves are decking the halls at Worth Avenue’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting, the unofficial start to Palm Beach’s shopping season. Join the Worth Avenue Association and Palm Beach Mayor Gail Coniglio for the annual parade down Worth Avenue and a night of holiday cheer.

Every Wednesday December through April, local and international visitors have the opportunity to take an hour-long walking tour of Worth Avenue with historian Rick Rose. Through colorful anecdotes and commentary, the tours explore the origins and character of Worth Avenue, its unique architecture, its legendary landmarks and some of its famous residents. There is free two-hour parking along Worth Avenue or at the Apollo Parking lot behind Tiffany & Co. for a small fee. The cost for the tour is $10 per person, a portion of which benefits local charities.

Cascading tree branches brush the walls of the via, while sculptures and art lend it its classical character.

Wrought iron gates encompass the walls of the first entrance, and statues and fountains line each terrace. Lost? Be on the lookout for the mosaic compass on the ground near Café Via Flora, a quiet café surrounded by trees, flowers and twinkling lights. Additionally, make sure to spot the can’t-miss mural in the via before enjoying a delicious lunch.

Worth Avenue has come a long way since its sleepy origins. Designed by society architect Addison Mizner in the 1920s, the shopping street is three blocks long but is endowed with a romantic Mediterranean charm that elevates it to arguably the most beautiful shopping street in the world.

FLAGLER MUSEUM

Palm Beach founding father Henry Flagler’s beloved mansion “Whitehall,” which he built in 1901 for his wife, Mary Lily Kenan, was sold by his heirs in 1925 and used as an elegant hotel residence.

In 1959, Jean Flagler Matthews purchased the property, acquired many of the mansion’s original furnishings and opened it as the Flagler Museum off Cocoanut Row. Today, it is an elegant tribute to the Gilded Age

THE BREAKERS

The Breakers Hotel is synonymous with luxury on a grand Palm Beach scale, but its origins were more modest when it opened as Henry Flagler’s The Palm Beach Inn in 1896 to accommodate travelers on his Florida East Coast Railway. Back then, it was the beachfront annex of the Royal Poinciana Hotel, which Flagler had opened in 1894. When guests began requesting rooms “over by the breakers,” Flagler renamed it The Breakers Hotel in 1901. The wooden hotel burned in 1903 and was rebuilt, opening in 1904.

In 1925, The Breakers Hotel burned yet again, and it was again rebuilt, this time in concrete, and modeled in grandiose style after the Villa Medici in Rome. The “new” Breakers reopened in 1926 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The hotel complex has been updated over the years, covers more than 100 acres and is distinguished by two landmark towers and a sweeping front drive.

It is still privately run by the descendants of Henry Flagler. It is open to the public and worth a visit for the

grand soaring frescoed ceilings, the commanding ocean views and the opulent nod to historical grandeur. Popular stops here are the retro HMF— The Breakers Palm Beach, a luxe lounge at this historic (and very hot) nightspot, and The Seafood Bar for a great ocean view. (1 S. County Road, 561/655-6611)

SOCIETY OF THE FOUR ARTS

This revered nonprofit cultural organization was founded in 1936 to fill the cultural gap on the island. It contains a gallery, a concert hall, a library and a sculpture garden. The Four Arts presents high-profile speakers, concerts, films and art exhibits (with a perpetual waiting list for memberships). The Four Arts Botanical Gardens date to 1938, with seven gardens illustrating the special plants and landscape design best suited for a subtropical climate; the adjacent Philip Hulitar Sculpture Garden adds art to the mix in an “outdoor museum-like setting.”

Lilly Pulitzer may have put Palm Beach on the fashion map, but believe it or not (and the late and much beloved Lilly Pulitzer Rousseau herself would tell you this), Palm Beach style is not all about pink and green.

The Palm Beach look is studiously casual, with bright colors, a cashmere sweater loosely knotted around the neck, bare legs, good cheekbones. Inside scoop  THE SENSE OF exclusivity associated with Palm Beach may owe its roots to sewingmachine heir and early resident Paris Singer.

He decreed that no membership to his Everglades Club would be guaranteed for next season, keeping every socialite on his or her best behavior: One woman was dropped from the club’s roster because she laughed too loud at a dinner party.  WHITE SHOES for men were introduced in Palm Beach in the late 19th century at a

Flaglerowned shoe store. They became popular worldwide, but if you wear them after Labor Day, you may still risk excommunication.  AT JUST OVER 10 square miles in area, Palm Beach is not quite three times the size of New York’s Central Park.  PALM BEACH contains more than 1,100 pools and 100 tennis courts.  IN THE 1920S, there was a “dress censor” employed on the beach at The Breakers to ensure propriety in attire—no skin showing and dark stockings, please.

 THE CARTIER PANTHER [designed in 1917] was inspired by Florida panthers that roamed Palm Beach in the 1900s.  IN ITS 1920S heyday, The Stotesbury House, El Mirasol—at 348 N. Ocean Blvd., just north of present-day Wells Road— sat on 42 acres from ocean to lake, and had 32 rooms, a 40-car garage and a private zoo. The house was torn down in 1957.

 THOSE EXOTIC squawkers wheeling overhead are wild quaker parrots that lend Palm Beach—and most of South Florida— its special tropical charm.

 TAKE A WALKING, driving or biking tour of the island with your own private guide through Leslie Diver’s Island Living Tours (561/868-7944; islandlivingpb.com). Driving tours range from 90 minutes to 2.5 hours and include a walk through the vias on Worth Avenue. Biking tours (bikes not included—you can rent them at the Palm Beach Bicycle Trail Shop) are 90 minutes each and are a great way to ogle the Island’s grand landmarked estates designed by the “Fab Four” of esteemed Palm Beach architects: Addison Mizner, Marion Sims Wyeth, John Volk and Maurice Fatio.

 THE LAKE TRAIL, which follows the Intracoastal on the western side of the island, offers a great view of the Intracoastal and an up-close look at the homes and tropical vegetation of Palm Beach. Start at the North Bridge, where E.R. Bradley’s casino once was (all that remains on the site now is a fireplace)( 2 ), and proceed past The Biltmore and the houses on Hi-Mount Road built on what is known as the coral cut, to an 1897 house called “The Vicarage,” once home to swashbuckling Douglas Fairbanks Jr. The northernmost end of the island is a broad dock once home to Annie’s Tackle Shop and Dock,( 1 ) a mainstay for boaters and residents alike that was torn down in the early 1980s.

Palm Beach—by Sea Not everything in Palm Beach is about terra firma; there are a few ways to dip into the island’s other natural world, too.  ON THE NORTH end, the Atlantic surf breaks are best at the east end of Reef Road.  SOUTH FLORIDA is known for its diving spots, and just up the beach off The Breakers is one of the most popular ones—the Breakers Reef—which is two miles long and teeming with sea life, from corals, sponges and tropical fish to moray eels and even the occasional whale shark. You can arrange a dive through your hotel concierge or check into The Scuba Club in West Palm Beach. Its dive masters know all the best dive sites accessible by boat, from wrecks to colorful drift dives.

 OFFSHORE FISHING is another local trademark. The deep blue waters of the Gulf Stream come very close to the coastline here, so fishing is superb, with anything from big game trophies like marlin and sailfish, to tarpon, shark, wahoo, kingfish, dolphin and any number of other fish,  THE TURQUOISE WATERS off Palm Beach are great for any number of water sports like sailing, paddleboarding, kayaking and Jet Skis.

Ann Norton had no formal artistic training in 1953, when she set out to build her life’s work by brick and chisel, kiln and granite slab. The nine monumental sculptures created on her property have been preserved, all these decades later, as the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, just across the bridge in West Palm Beach. Tucked in a residential street, the gardens and Maurice Fatio-designed house still feel like a best-kept secret. Walking the gardens, with their 300 palm species, surprising water features and fluttering butterflies, feels like escaping into a fairytale ruled by semiabstract giants. NORTON MUSEUM OF ART

Also minutes from the island, West Palm Beach’s Norton Museum of Art has been a cultural fixture for more than 70 years, accumulating more than 7,000 works in its eclectic permanent collection. This is where blockbuster exhibits stop while on tour, and where stunning original exhibitions are conceived by expert curators.

The museum will be closed until February 2019, after which it will reopen as the “New Norton”—capping a $100 million renovation project nine years in the making, which Executive Director Hope Alswang calls “a vessel for our aspirations.” (1450 S. THE GALLERIES OF PALM BEACH

The development of Florida’s economy and status as a tourist destination can be attributed to Henry Flagler, who built the Florida East Coast Railway from Jacksonville to Key West. Flagler and his wife Mary Lily Kenan spent their winters in the Beaux-Arts mansion Whitehall, known today as the Flagler Museum, a beautiful, well-preserved national historic landmark.

Visitors to the museum can take selfguided brochure tours, self-guided smart device tours or docent-led tours of the estate and Henry Flagler’s private railcar, built in 1886 for his personal use. Visitors can also download the free Flagler Museum app on their smartphones prior to their visit to learn more about the history of the museum as well as have access to audio tours, an orientation video, events calendar and more. Those who

visit on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. have the pleasure of hearing Whitehall’s weekly organ demonstration, and throughout the year, the Flagler hosts a rousing bluegrass concert, a chamber music series, a lecture series and art exhibitions evoking aspects of the Gilded Age. SOCIETY OF THE FOUR ARTS, PALM BEACH

For more than 80 years, the Society of the Four Arts has presented top-shelf cultural programming to the Palm Beach community. As its name suggests, its multi-building campus houses a quartet of disciplines, with

hundreds of events filling its concert hall, gallery space, cinema and library each year. The Four Arts’ signature O’Keeffe Speaker Series, running Tuesday afternoons from January to April, welcomes nationally renowned figures from the realms of politics, media, arts and entertainment. Its concert series features the best in orchestral, chamber and jazz music on Wednesday nights and some Sunday afternoons in season, and its film series features foreign and domestic titles fresh off the arthouse circuit on select Fridays. All year round, visitors can enjoy the Philip Hulitar Sculpture Garden and Four Arts Botanical Garden.

All programs are open to the public, with admission reasonably priced. Most buildings in the Society, at 2 Four Arts Plaza, are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, with select hours on Saturday. PAN’S GARDEN, PALM BEACH

Standing with flute in hand, the bronze statue of Pan of Rohallion welcomes visitors to this green oasis in the center of Palm Beach. Pan’s Garden is a half-acre filled with southern magnolia trees, scarlet milkweeds and about 300 more species of Florida native vegetation.

Visitors can walk through the tranquil pathways or relax on a bench under the garden’s roofed, open pavilion. At 386 Hibiscus Ave., Pan’s Garden is open to the public weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. General admission to the gardens is free. Call 561/832-0731.

Ann’s artwork, including the nine monumental sculptures she left behind, eight in brick and one in granite. Seasonally changing exhibitions feature sculptures from contemporary and classic artists nestled among Ann’s work.

In addition to her love for sculpting, Ann had a passion for wildlife, and she wanted her work to be placed among plants and animals. The luscious garden holds native plants as well as more than 300 rare palms, and welcomes birds and other animals that

in the venue’s history, featuring 4-foot-wide pathways that provide the illusion of walking on a water world vibrant with aquatic plant and animal life.

Kravis Center

NORTON MUSEUM OF ART, WEST PALM BEACH

One of the Southeast’s premier art museums, the Norton Museum of Art has been a cultural fixture in West Palm Beach since 1941. Founded by Ralph Hubbard Norton and wife Elizabeth Calhoun Norton, the museum is known for the quality of its permanent collection, traveling exhibitions and innovative educational programs.

The internationally renowned permanent collection features more than 7,000 works, concentrated in European, American, Chinese and contemporary art and photography. The museum also offers a year-round schedule of special exhibitions.

A great time to visit is during the Norton’s weekly Art After Dark festivities. On Thursdays, the museum remains open until 9 p.m., offering live music, drink specials, gallery talks and craft activities.

The Norton is currently closed as part of an exciting expansion and renovation project that will transform the museum into the “New Norton” in February 2019. Following this grand re-opening, the Norton Museum of Art, at 1450 S. ANN NORTON SCULPTURE GARDENS, WEST PALM BEACH

After marrying Ralph Hubbard Norton, founder of the Norton Museum of Art, in 1947, sculptor and art collector Ann Weaver began to fill their property, now the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, with more than 100 works.

Visitors to her historic home and studio—a waterfront property designed by Maurice Fatio—can wander the grounds and admire

seasonally migrate to the area.

Since its grand opening in November of 1992, the Kravis Center has grown into one of the premier destinations in Palm Beach County for plays, concerts, arts education and more. MORIKAMI MUSEUM AND JAPANESE GARDENS, DELRAY BEACH

The only museum in the United States devoted exclusively to Japanese culture recently celebrated its 40th anniversary. The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens features a large museum that showcases Japanese art as well as unusual objects from everyday life, past and present. It also features one of the largest authentic Japanese gardens in the United States, complete with waterfalls and bridges, rock gardens and koi ponds.

Visitors may roam through six diverse gardens—each inspired by a different time period and style of Japanese gardening—explore one of the rotating gallery exhibitions, or attend a tea ceremony performed monthly in the Seishin-an Tea House.

BOCA RATON MUSEUM OF ART, BOCA RATON

The Boca Raton Museum of Art serves the Boca Raton community as a cultural and art hotspot with its two-story museum and outdoor sculpture garden that houses more than 30 installations by internationally known artists as well as Florida artists.

The museum’s permanent collection contains more than 4,500 works from artists like Picasso and Degas to contemporary American art, West African tribal art and pre-Columbian Art. Children and adults can participate in regularly scheduled classes and programs or sign up for four- to six-week art courses for beginners and experienced artists at the museum’s art school. Daily docent-led tours and Sunday afternoon “Music in the Museum” concerts supplement the experience.

BONNET HOUSE MUSEUM AND GARDENS, FORT LAUDERDALE

Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway is the historic Bonnet House Museum and Gardens, the former home of artists Frederic and Evelyn Bartlett. Now on the National Register of Historic Places, the estate’s décor has Caribbean-style influences, as well as art, china, animal figures and flowers collected by all three of Frederic Bartlett’s wives.

The Old Florida yet whimsical feel continues throughout the grounds, where monkeys and swans can be seen. Aside from viewing the house, art and gardens, visitors can sign up for orchid, birding and art classes or attend one of the lectures or concerts hosted at the house veranda once a month from January through April.

Admission is $20 for adults and $16 for children ages 6 to 12. Children younger than 6 and Bonnet House Members enjoy free admission. Tours of just the garden are $10. The Bonnet House, at 900 N. VIZCAYA MUSEUM AND GARDENS, MIAMI

Another grand house to explore is Vizcaya, a 34-room villa overlooking Biscayne Bay, built by industrialist James Deering in 1916. Only 10 minutes from downtown Miami, the expansive Italian estate and 10-acre bayfront gardens are examples of the late Gilded Age at its best: Expect an abundance of European antiquities, early 20th century American art and century-old plants. A 90-minute audio tour is available for $5, and can be purchased in five languages. With more than 190 species and 550 animals on display, the Palm Beach Zoo at Dreher Park features unique creatures unseen anywhere else in the region, from black bears to komodo dragons to giant anteaters.

In keeping with its mission to propagate endangered species, the zoo participates in more than 50 Species Survival Plans, helping to manage threatened animals such as the red kangaroo, Malayan tiger and Indian pygmy goose. Most recently, the zoo debuted Fiona, an orphaned jaguar rescued from Panama, and announced the births of a red-crowned crane and five Perdido Key beach mice.

The zoo frequently plays host to family festivals, children’s educational programming, holiday breakfasts, keeper talks and wildlife shows. LION COUNTRY SAFARI, LOXAHATCHEE

Developed by South African and British entrepreneurs looking to bring the experience of an African game park to families unable to travel the distance, Lion Country Safari is America’s first drive-through safari park.

Opened in 1967, the zoo sprawls over 600 acres in Palm Beach County and is home to more than 900 animals living in large, natural exhibits. While driving through the safari park, tourists can catch glimpses of llamas, lions, wildebeests, chimpanzees and more.

There are also private guided tours which include three animal encounters.

You can choose from apps and entrees ranging from lobster bisque, lamb sausage, roast chicken and several pastas to a battery of pizzas locals swear by—especially the Palm Beach Pizza, with mozzarella, smoked salmon, caviar, red onions, capers and sour cream.

This hidden gem is a locals’ favorite.

RENATO’S, 87 VIA MIZNER, 561/655-9752 Renato’s is arguably the most romantic restaurant in South Florida, with old-fashioned top drawer service, a tinkling piano, an outdoor patio space that feels positively European and a fine dining menu that is

STARBUCKS, 150 WORTH AVE., 561/651-7740 Starbucks had to leap a few hurdles to land on Palm Beach, which is famously anti-franchise, but it is now a popular meeting spot right smack on Worth Avenue in the Esplanade. Caffeine close to both the beach and action central is all you could ask for.

TA-BOO, 221 WORTH AVE., 561/835-3500 Ta-boo is a tradition on the Avenue, and arguably its most well-known culinary landmark, the place to see and be seen for more than 60 years and counting. It is a local favorite for its happy hour, and regulars know to ask for certain tables.

Ta-boo stories include the one that says the Bloody Mary was invented here, and that Joe Kennedy had a tryst with Gloria Swanson in the ladies’ room. True or false, it’s that kind of place—full of great gossip, better steaks and a buzz that never really goes away.

Thanks to the Town of Palm Beach United Way, the Worth Avenue Association brings the spirit of Palm Beach philanthropy to the greater community, both on and off the island.

For many, this year’s Charity of Choice feels especially close to home.
