Thursday we are reflecting on a recent viewing of documentation of Ant Farm’s brilliant 1975 event “Media Burn” and reflecting on the stretch of political debate that seems like gum that’s stuck on the bottom of your shoe that you don’t notice until you’ve walked a dozen miles and it’s stretching and straining and suddenly you find yourself yanked back right to where you came from like in a scene from Road Runner where Wile E. Coyote has run off a cliff but doesn’t notice and all of a sudden notices and his body falls and his surprised face stays for a second before zipping straight down down down and a little puff of dust at the bottom of the canyon tells you what happened. And then you are back where you started and the gum is still there and Wile E. Coyote is back on track chasing that charming bird all over the place again. That’s what today brings, along with an image from our Journal 3 by Zoe Beloff, her documentary drawings from a 2016 Trump rally. “8.00pm YEH!!!” Hang in there everybody...with love, The Hoosac Institute.

It has been a little while, and we are happy to be back with you this sunny, intense Monday in October.

“Coming home to poetry-you permit yourself liberties-in the first placehappiness.” And this quote here in this section is by Susan Howe, in her magical lecture from 2012 entitled “The Whispered Rush, Telepathy of Archives.” The image that is here that is text comes from a 1926 letter from Hart Crane to Waldo Frank. Howe quotes it in her lecture. We hope you will allow yourselves the liberty of happiness and some poetry today.

Mission Despite language expounding the necessity of experimentation, creativity, and interdisciplinarity, too many institutions keep their textual and image boundaries tightly controlled.

We have all written, produced, or created projects that didn’t find a home; projects to which we devoted time, energy and skill. The Hoosac Institute dedicates itself to these very works of people whose titles may not reveal everything about themselves and their productive capacities.

History Founded in 1970 in Williamstown, Massachusetts, The Hoosac Institute has been dormant for over 40 years. The Institute has been revived and restored by Jenny Perlin in an effort to open drawers, shine lights, and reshuffle categories. The Hoosac itself is a river that runs through Massachusetts, Vermont, and New York. Its name can be translated from the Algonquian to either “the beyond place” or “the stony place.”
