Publ!sher’s Notes

Happy Spring!

A

pril is the month when our first son was born. Named Michael William (after his great grandfathers), Michael came to us almost three months before expected. He was just 4.8 pounds but the greatest thing that ever happened to us. Some people may think that Mia caught a break only being pregnant for seven months, but those seven month helped shape who we are today. Mia was admitted into the hospital over 75 times during those seven months, but it was the people around us that helped shape our futures. Bill’s boss bought him his companies first laptop and told him to be with Mia. He would say, “the work will always be there.” Our families were also very present and extremely helpful to get us through those rough days. Mia, a juvenile diabetic, had among many problems, nerve damage in her eyes. She lost vision in one eye and is considered legally blind. Unfortunately, she is unable to drive, but has created a great life and has raised four amazing boys. Today, it is more important than ever to remember where you came from and who helped you get to where you are going. As for that 4.8 pound boy, he has grown into a great young man who will be making his mark on the world as a TV news producer. Be sure to check out our new website at huntleyhapenings.com

ith more than 170 employees, family members, administrators, and Education Foundation Board members in attendance, the Huntley 158 Education Foundation held its first annual Distinguished Educator/Employee Awards Ceremony March 8. The event honored those staff members nominated by their peers from each of the district’s nine schools and administration office, culminating with the announcement of the individuals selected as Distinguished Educator of the Year and as the Distinguished Employee of the Year. Mackeben Elementary’s 2nd grade teacher Kieran Zastrow was named Distinguished Educator of the Year. Those nominating Mrs. Zastrow said she is always adapting and changing to the needs of her students and is willing to try new things with conviction. She always has new ideas and techniques being implemented which her students love because it enables them to continue to grow as learners. Mrs. Zastrow was chosen from this year’s other distinguished educator nominees, including: • Christa Serpe, Kindergarten Teacher, Chesak Elementary School • Britt Crowe, Music Teacher, Conley Elementary School • Kelly Nava, Early Childhood Teacher, D158 Early Childhood Center • Suzanne Schwantje, Social Worker, Heineman Middle School • Angela Zaleski, Health Teacher, Huntley High School • Kristi Stamatis, Special Education Teacher, Leggee Elementary School • Erin Pawelko, Special Education Teacher, Marlowe Middle School, • Jen Raines, Reading Specialist, Martin Elementary School

Martin Elementary School media/LRC aide Tammy Bratcher was named Distinguished Employee of the Year. Her peers said, “Tammy

goes above and beyond for each individual student in the school by assisting in the library, delivering interventions and being a CICO (Check-In, Check-Out) advisor. She is also willing to help any staff member in any way necessary, always with a smile on her face.” Other distinguished employee award nominees included: • Chris Blezien, Special Education Aide, Chesak Elementary School • Francene Robb, Paraprofessional, Conley Elementary School • Kathy Pacana, Paraprofessional, D158 Early Childhood Center • Nancy McLennand, Program Aide, Heineman Middle School • Pablo Hernandez, Lead Custodian, Huntley High School • Tina Kenders, Special Education Aide, Leggee Elementary School • Jody Hilbrant, Lunch Supervisor, Mackeben Elementary School • Emilio Guebara, Lead Custodian, Marlowe Middle School • Donna Runyon, Purchasing Coordinator, District Administrative Office

A touching tribute honoring Kathy Pacana, Paraprofessional, who passed away on February 27 after a long battle with cancer, was read by Foundation board member Jaime DeBlieck. The spirit of Kathy’s genuine love and compassion for others was prevalent in her work at the District’s Early Childhood Center. Mrs. Pacana’s award was accepted by her husband, Chris, and daughter, Julianne. “Simply the Best! The inaugural Huntley 158 Education Foundation Recognition Banquet was incredible! My vision was achieved and we celebrated the outstanding work that is done on a daily basis in Huntley 158 to support innovation, collaboration, creativity and a love of learning!” said banquet chairperson, Niki Burkey, who, in a very short period of time, jumped right in and put her heart and soul into providing for an exciting evening along with committee members Rita Castans and Jaime DeBlieck. Special thanks to Chuck Lamb, Rosemary Herringer, Lonnie Oldham and Nancy Tomasso who read through all of the nominee applications and selected the winners. Established in 2003 as a not-for-profit organization, the Huntley District 158 Education Foundation is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. The Foundation strives to inspire academic excellence for all students at all levels, cultivates collaboration and understanding of educational issues within the community, encourages innovation, creativity and a love of learning, and promotes Huntley Community School District 158 as a center for community learning.

McHenry Community Health - Some people think of MCDH as a place for adopting a pet. Some think of it as restaurant inspections, while still others think of the Health Department as the place to go for flu shots. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that it does all of these things and more! Each month, MCDH talks about what’s going on at the health department and bring you information you can use to make your life better. Sunday 10:30 am.

Rev!ews

Book Review by Annie Camille

And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer by Fredrick Backman

This novella is a treasure. Just 76 index card sized pages which can be read in less than an hour. But packed with deeply insightful, poignant and hauntingly beautiful messages that will touch the reader for a lifetime. Messages about fear, forgetting, life, love, loss, regrets, dementia, relationships, experiencing life, compassion, death, about being different (and that being ok) and about how life comes full circle in so many different ways. This book moved me to tears. I read it once and then I read it again. I flagged page after page and underlined passage after passage. I read and re-read line after beautiful line. So many favorites.

Maybe this book touched me so much because in my career as a guardianship attorney I work with individuals affected by dementia every day – with clients who are afflicted with Alzheimer’s and with families who are trying to help their loved one who is experiencing dementia. In the book Grandpa is struggling with how to explain to his beloved grandson, Noah, how dementia is going to make him eventually forget everything, even Noah.

Sports! Two Receivers Are Better Than One Curtis Koch

B

ears General Manager Ryan Pace approached this offseason with a contract extension and a plan. The plan was obvious, to get Mitchell Trubisky weapons. The plan was not only an attempt to for Pace to keep his job past his current contract extension, but to make the Chicago Bears a potential playoff team again.

Pace signed Allen Robinson from the Jacksonville Jaguars, the top receiver in this free agent class, and also added slot receiver Taylor Gabriel who played for the Atlanta Falcons as well as former Philadelphia Eagles Tight End Trey Burton, and Kicker Cody Parkey from the Miami Dolphins. Pace wasn’t done. He resigned several key members on the Bears defense. Most notably he signed Daefensive Backs Kyle Fuller and Prince Amukamara. Both of whom were solid in the secondary and pass coverage in 2017.

forward as Jared Goff did last season, which included making it to the playoffs. Although I would not get your hopes so high yet Bears fans.

So with the pieces in place, and the Mike Glennon era over in Chicago, what’s next for a team that finished 5-11 last season? Before we can find an answer to that question, all eyes are going to have to be on Mitchell Trubisky.

Either way, we should learn if Mitchell Trubisky will pan out or is a bust. I believe Trubisky is the real deal. With teams such as the Saints, Falcons, Seahawks, Cowboys, and Eagles all battling for their own divisions and with up and coming teams such as the 49ers, the road to the playoffs for the Bears will be a challenge, but it all comes down to how much progression will we see this year.

In order for us to get a sense of the potential that Trubisky will have, it will depend on how well he plays with his new teammates. Jared Goff or the LA Rams had a breakout season last year because of several additions: a new young head coach, three Wide Receivers (one of them Cooper Kupp who was drafted in the 3rd round), a Tight End as well as several defensive players. Wait a second, isn’t that kind of what the Bears did? Yes, the Bears essentially copied the trend of the NFL these days, sign a young offensive minded head coach, draft a quarterback high, and surround him with talent and maintain a defensive unit that can keep you in games. The Bears can only hope that Trubisky takes the giant leap

April 2018

The race in the NFC North is a tough one. With Kirk Cousins taking the helm of an already extremely talented Vikings team, not to mention Aaron Rodgers and the Packers are (when Rodgers is healthy) a contender for a Super Bowl as well. The only hope for the Bears to make the playoffs is through a wild card.
