New Year ~ New Happenings!

F

irst, we would like to introduce ourselves. We are Mia and Bill Geheren. We moved to Huntley in 1999 and have been involved in many of the changes that have occurred in the Friendly Village with Country Charm. We are the proud parents of 4 boys, 3 of which we adopted. Mia has been active in many parent groups and St. Mary’s Church and Bill is a member of the Huntley District 158 Board of Education and a regular on Huntley Community Radio. We wanted to get involved with Huntley Happenings, to provide local companies an opportunity to share their products and services with the people who would be most interested - so please be sure check out all of the great companies that are advertising with us - without them, there would be no magazine. We are going to continue to bring you great, local stories - but would love to hear from you if there is anything we are missing. We look forward to being something you look forward to receiving in your mailbox every month!

Finally, we would like to thank Sam and Judy Geati. Sammy grew Huntley Happenings from a 4-page pamphlet to what it is today. His passion is very difficult to match, but we want to make sure to keep his legacy going with something he would be proud of.

School District Seeking New Leader Burkey Steps Down to Helm Statewide Group After 12 Years in Huntley

Commun!ty

Huntley Community School District 158 has begun the search for a new superintendent following the departure of Dr. John Burkey on January 31, 2018. Burkey, who oversaw a 12-year period of rapid growth, expansion of innovative offerings, and nationally recognized success, stepped down to take a position as executive director of the Large Unit District Association (LUDA). The LUDA group supports the 53 largest unit school districts in Illinois with networking, professional development, and advocacy. It is also a leading voice on statewide educational policy matters. “I look forward to continue serving students in Illinois, only now on a larger scale,” Burkey said. “We thank Dr. Burkey for his 12 years of devoted service to the Huntley community,” said Don Drzal, president of the Huntley 158 Board of Education. “We are saddened to be losing the visionary leadership of Dr. Burkey for our district but are excited that students throughout the State of Illinois will now benefit from his abilities.”

Interim Named The Board in January announced the selection of Dr. Bradley Hawk as interim superintendent for the remainder of the 2017-18 school year. Dr. Hawk retired from full-time work as an educational administrator in 2009, having served as superintendent of Burlington District 301 for five years. Since then he has been a clinical assistant professor at Northern Illinois University and in 2016-17 served as interim superintendent at DeKalb CUSD 428. He is a familiar face to longtime community members, having previously served as assistant superintendent of human resources in Huntley 158 from 2000 to 2004. He also served as an interim assistant principal at Huntley High School in 2010. He began his teaching career at Sterling High School in Sterling, Illinois and later served as a principal and curriculum director there before joining Huntley 158.

“The firm has a strong national presence and long track record of success in finding top-quality talent for premier school districts,” Drzal said. “We are truly a destination school district, and we wanted a firm that will help us attract the best candidate, wherever they are located.” Further information will be provided to the community about the search process and ways that community members will be encouraged to provide input. Information will be updated at www. district158.org/superintendent-search.

Looking Back When Dr. Burkey was hired in 2006, Huntley 158 was in the midst of huge growth in student enrollment and an uncertain financial situation. Burkey, who came to Huntley after serving as an assistant superintendent of schools in Dunlap School District 323, had a vision for the opportunities held within those challenges.

“We are very fortunate to have Dr. Hawk to guide us through this transition period,” said Don Drzal, Board of Education president. “With Dr. Hawk’s extensive experience in educational administration, his ties to Huntley 158, and his experience as an interim superintendent, the Board is confident he is a great fit to lead the District for the remainder of the year and help us successfully transition to new leadership.”

Burkey, who holds a bachelor’s degree in history and master’s and doctoral degrees in educational administration, all from the University of Illinois, remained a student throughout his time as a leader. That included not only placing a high value on providing professional development opportunities for staff, but also personally visiting leading school districts throughout the United States and the world, including China and Finland.

Search Underway

“If we want to be a world-class school district, we have to learn from other world-class school districts,” he said.

Also in January, the Board announced that the firm of Hazard, Young, Attea, and Associates (HYA) will lead a national search process to find a permanent superintendent. The Board selected HYA from among four firms that submitted proposals and interviewed with the Board in December.

Visiting” for educators to learn from by Getting Smart, a leading news hub and thinktank for educational innovation. It also was selected among 10 districts throughout the state to participate in the Illinois State Board of Education’s competencybased education pilot program. The District also has regularly been recognized by national media outlets such as the Washington Post, CNN, Washington Times, and others for its outstanding educational offerings. Since Burkey started as superintendent, the enrollment of Huntley 158 has grown from less than 7,000 to nearly 10,000. Among the accomplishments during his tenure are numerous construction and renovation projects, including the recent $35 million renovation and addition project at Huntley High School. That project, which was funded completely by a state grant, not local tax dollars, has given the District’s flagship school a facility that rivals any of the best in the Chicago area. Burkey has made a special effort to reach out to residents of the Sun City community, regularly hosting briefings at Sun City and special visit programs within schools. Residents also were included in the District’s most recent strategic planning process in 2015. Burkey also led the implementation of Illinois’ largest K-12 1:1 (one student, one device) initiative, guided the creation of Huntley High School’s nationally recognized blended learning and specialized academy programs, and helped students achieve record-high standardized test scores. All the while, Huntley 158 has consistently maintained one of the lowest operating-cost-perstudent rates in the Chicago area. Currently, Huntley is the second-lowest spending school district in McHenry and Kane Counties, and is the second-lowest spending large unit district in the entire Chicago area. While his new position will have spending a lot of time in Chicago and Springfield, Burkey will continue to live in Huntley, where his two children attend Huntley schools. “Both of my children have spent their entire school careers in Huntley 158, and I would not want them any other place. They are getting a world-class education and have had so many caring, highquality teachers,” Burkey said. “Huntley 158 is a special place. There are so many talented, caring people that work for Huntley 158, and it has been the highest honor to work alongside the employees of this district.”

 Submitted by Dan Armstrong - Director, Communications and Public Engagement - Huntley Community School District 158

In 2017 Huntley 158 was accepted into the League of Innovative Schools, a national coalition of forward-thinking school districts with fewer than 100 members in the United States. Also in 2017 it was named among the “100 Schools Worth

Denny’s - Huntley On May 18, 2017, Denny’s on 13240 S. Route 47, hosted a grand opening. The event will feature games, prizes and giveaways of food according to the Northwest Herald. “We are excited to celebrate our diner’s opening with the Huntley community,” said Denny’s franchisee Dave Kahre in a news release. “This celebration is our way of welcoming them to our new restaurant to kick off what promises to be a lifelong relationship with our friends and neighbors.” We sat down with Dave to learn a little more about Denny’s: How long have you been open in Huntley? About a year and a half. Why did you choose Huntley as a new Denny’s location? Looked like a good area for a Denny’s. How are you doing compared to your expectations since you opened? A little slower then anticipated.

In your ad, you have daily specials. Do these change throughout the year, or remain the same? Right now they will remain the same. Do you have any special events coming up throughout the year - anything you can share with us? Maybe, but if so we will announce later.

Your location is beautiful…how happy are you with the space you are in? We are happy with the space, works well and have a drive up pick up window for to go orders. Can you tell if you are getting more locals, or traffic from 90 or both? More Locals. Everybody knows about The Grand Slam Breakfast. Is that your most popular menu item? Yes most do know, the Build Your Own Grand Slam Is one of our most popular items.

2018 Winter Olympics WHEN DO THE OLYMPICS BEGIN? The 2018 Winter Olympics officially begin with the Opening Ceremony on Friday, Feb. 9 at PyeongChang Olympic Stadium, a temporary structure that seats about 35,000. The Games will conclude with the Closing Ceremony on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 8 p.m. local time. WHERE IS PYEONGCHANG? PyeongChang is located in South Korea, about 79 miles east of the capital city of Seoul, which hosted the 1988 Summer Olympics. It was announced in 2011 that PyeongChang would host the 2018 Winter Olympics. The city beat out other bids from Munich, Germany and Annecy, France. HOW TO WATCH THE 2018 WINTER OLYMPICS NBC is the home of the Olympics and will broadcast the 2018 Winter Olympics live across all time zones. Events will be carried on NBC, NBCSN, CNBC, USA Network, NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app. A more detailed Olympics TV schedule will be coming soon. TEAM USA The U.S. Olympic Team is expected to have about 240 athletes at the 2018 Games, according to teamusa.org.

10

Notable names for the U.S. include skier Lindsey Vonn and snowboarder Shaun White, both of whom could be competing in their final Olympics. ARE NHL PLAYERS COMPETING IN THIS YEAR’S WINTER OLYMPICS? The short answer: No. The NHL announced last April that its players would not compete in the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, following a run of five straight Winter Olympics featuring NHL players. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said many times that the league’s owners were against having players compete in the Olympics for multiple reasons, mainly because of the 17-day break in February. JOINT KOREAN TEAM Athletes from South and North Korea have agreed to form their first joint Olympic team, South Korea said on Wednesday, Jan. 17. It said athletes from the two countries will march together under a “unification flag” during the Opening Ceremony and will form a combined women’s hockey team.

Book Review by Annie Camille

“This Time Together: Laughter and Reflection” by Carol Burnett

In her second book, comedy legend Carol Burnett looks back fondly on her long and successful career in short, easily digestible chapters that part the curtain on her private life. Told in a chatty, intimate way, the stories encompass the star’s childhood; early days as an actress doing bit parts in New York City, appearing on game shows and various variety shows; her 11 years hosting The Carol Burnett Show; and life after the show ended its run. Readers will enjoy the comical memories included, such as how she once used her famous Tarzan yell to disarm a mugger, funny interactions with fans who recognize her on the street, and the origin of famous scenes from the show, such as Scarlett O’Hara in a curtain-rod dress.

Burnett doesn’t shy away from sad subjects and occasionally touches on personal losses. She also dishes about her famous costars and friends, including Jimmy Stewart, Lucille Ball, Cary Grant, Julie Andrews, and, of course, Carol Burnett Show regulars Harvey Korman, Tim Conway, Vicki Lawrence, and Lyle Waggoner. Fans of both the show and the actress will enjoy this mostly lighthearted though sometimes poignant look back at Burnett’s career.

Sports! Show me the money!

Before you read my latest column, please keep in mind while reading that as you read this, I am writing this in early January and changes are going to happen between now and spring training. Anyways, hope you enjoy the article!

his offseason, baseball fans prepped up for a time full of rumors, signings, and money being tossed around. This offseason was not the case, in fact it was quite the opposite. The Cubs didn’t spend much Curtis money with the exception of Koch two players. Tyler Chatwood, and Brandon Morrow. So why did the Cubs hold off on keeping players such as Wade Davis or Jake Arrieta? I’m not in any baseball front office position but if you ask me the explanation is simple. Future investments. It’s no secret that next years free agent class includes some big name free agents. Bryce Harper and Manny Machado are the “A-list” headliners. Although, more could join them if players such as David Price and Clayton Kershaw opt out of their current contracts. So is it possible the Cubs are saving money for a Harper or Machado? Yes, although they should’ve done more this offseason. It’s no secret the Cubs have been big spenders. Jon Lester, Jason Heyward, and Ben Zobrist all have very expensive contracts. Although with young rising talent getting in the mix with those veterans. There comes a time where you wonder, “who will be the odd man out?” Albert Almora Jr, Ian Happ and Kyle Schwarber, who despite his below average defense in left field, still showed that he has pop in his bat with 30 plus home runs could all be interesting players Theo and Jedd could’ve moved. So why didn’t they? This goes back to next years free agency. The reason the Cubs didn’t spend much money, and keep those players fans have loved is because of one specific player. Bryce Harper.

February 2018

All the players who were said to be potential trade candidates have so far stayed with the team. I personally believe it’s because Theo and Jedd are keeping as much assets as they can so if they do sign Harper, they can use those players to make trades and fill out the rest of their roster. Trading players such as Almora, Happ, and Schwarber now wouldn’t make sense for the Cubs because they could be trading away assets they need for this season. If the Cubs were to sign Harper, the assumption would be that Jason Heyward would move to center field and Harper would play right field. We saw the Cubs do this when they signed Ben Zobrist. Minutes after signing their World Series MVP, the team traded Starlin Castro and another minor leaguer to the Yankees for Adam Warren, and a utility infielder who was immediately released by the team. Warren on the other hand had his ups and downs with the Cubs but was used as a piece in the Aroldis Chapman trade. So what are the expectations for the Cubs this season. As a Cubs fan I still hold the expectation of making it to the playoffs. Although teams in the Central have made improvements, especially the Cardinals, and with the Brewers on the rise, the Cubs could have a tougher race to the division than last year. Although even though they may not be “the” favorite to win the World Series. They still are a top 5 team in the National League. Still keep your expectations high Cubs fans, just keep thinking ahead. Theo and Jedd know what they’re doing and being conservative with their spending now, could mean another World Series rally at Grant Park in the near future.
