The last few years has seen this program evolve with the likes of the home raised Power Train bull whose dam is the 606D cow which we will see a lot from her in this cattle represented through 9 full embryo transplant brothers. Power Train himself has made his mark in this bull pen through his high quality bulls presented before you. With the influence of 606D through the ET calves and the Power Train calves and another set on the ground again in 2024 it is safe to say that Dersta Farms is hanging their hat on this cow and her future, she’s truly a model Red Angus cow. First and foremost, we want to acknowledge our heartfelt gratitude to ALL of our supporters, bidder s and buyers, who have put their trust in our program the past 12 years. Without EACH and every one of you we wouldn’t be here today hosting you at our own sale.

As always, the kids keep us busy with ALL the sports year round, summer Junior Angus shows, 4H and all the summer activities in between. A highlight of the kids this year was Lexie and Erika each winning respectively Champion & Reserve Steer in the Rangeland 4-H Beef Club with their homegrown 100% Red Angus steers Lexie taking home Grand Champion Inter club steer at the Eckville & District Steer show and Sale. Along with Lexie taking home Grand Champion Club & Interclub Champion Female with her two year old pair, Chloe. Just ask her about Chloe and she will tell you how great of a breeding piece she is to her herd. Erika, Lexie, & Logan were all able to use their steer money and purchase a handful of females this past fall to further their herds. We may have to put a cap on their numbers soon.

2023 found a lot of changes, adaptations, and growth across Canada. As the drought continued the ag sector once again showcases the resilience of the keepers of the land. New, innovative and sometimes challenging ways to get the cattle fed, crop grown, just to say ‘well it will be better next year’. This year it was better for all. With all time high calf prices this past fall shows us how in demand Canadian beef is. So, let’s put the pressure on some cows and sell by the pound!

The bulls that stand out in the pasture for your appraisal are the deepest, most uniform, best footed, highest gaining group of bulls we have ever offered. We dug deep and searched out herd bulls that we thought would compliment, and add to not only our herd but our customers as well. We present to you the 2024 bulls.

We would like to make sure we shout out to our herd health partners. Without them we would not be able to keep the cows in a strict 60-day calving period, nor the health in which the herd is always in. BIRTH WEIGHT & CALVING EASE University studies in Wyoming and data from Montana and Colorado lend credence to the following conclusions: • The birth weight itself influences calving ease by 65%.

• The female has 60-70% influence on birth weight of her calf.

• The bull has 30-40% influence on birth weight of his progeny.

• Pelvic measurement and angle as well as the shape of the calve have 35-40% influence on calving ease.

• Length of gestation greatly affects birth weight. A fetus can gain over one pound per day in the last days of gestation.

• Weather and temperature in the last 30 days affect the length of gestation.

• Size and maturity of the cow influence calving ease.

Most commercial producers do not take birth weights. Guessing is as inaccurate as driving with a broken speedometer - what’s thought to be 55 mph may in fact be 65 or 70 mph, and what’s thought to be 70-80 lbs, may actually be 80-90 lbs.

Everything is relevant. Increased growth, frame and performance will increase BW. A longer bodied calf will weigh more. If a calf is expected to have genetics for growth, it will display this prior to birth as well as after.

As a rule of thumb, it takes a calf weighing 85 lbs at birth to finish at 1200-1250 lbs. A cow should easily give birth to a calf weighing 8% of her own body weight. Thus a 1200-1250 lb cow should give birth to a 96 lb calf with ease. Continued selection for light birth weights will ultimately reduce the mature sizes and performance of cattle.

HERD HEALTH The Alberta Veterinary Center has been providing regular herd health services or Dersta Farm Ltd. since the very beginning of 14 years. Our goal and Dersta has always been to prevent disease rather than treat. The cow herd has been vaccinated annually in the spring 6 weeks prior to breeding. The entire herd is on the Bovishield Gold Program and receives the Clostridial vaccine annually. The whole herd not just the first calving heifers are vaccinated annually with Scour Guard for neonatal scour prevention.

At birth all caves receive a dose of nasalgen-Bovalis for the prevention of viral pneumonia. At grass turn out and again at weaning regardless of commercial or purebred the calves are all vaccinated with Bovishield Gold + OneShot, Vision 8/som. As a recently added vaccine, Dersta has utilized the pink eye vaccine with great success.

Annual parasitic control is strictly followed with a Cylence treatment mid-summer if needed depending on fly load.

All of the herd bulls and yearling bulls on offer are fully vaccinated with both doses of Fusogaurd in the prevention of foot rot prior to delivery and vaccinated with the Bovishield Gold program.

RED DSM MISS SEAMAN 606D The story of 606D is a simple one. She’s plain good. She’s what we call a once in a lifetime cow, originally sold in Red Roundup in 2017 to T-K, we knew the potential and bought her back at their 2019 dispersal. But as we’ve come to realize her progeny just keep getting better and better. And year after year she out does herself. Words from a few very wellknown cattlemen when they see her is “you will have to travel a lot of miles to find a cow that good and that sound, and you’re lucky enough that she’s right in your pasture”. “Damn that’s a great cow.”

606D is one of those cows that gets noticed every time someone tours pastures. She oozes quality with her depth, broodiness, level udder structure and soundness. Her production speaks for herself. Her Bulls every year have gone onto make the bull pen and are always received well. We made the mistake of selling each female as she gave them to us. From Ontario to BC and all in between. We decided to start flushing her but not wanting to ‘wreck’ her. We only flushed once a year and every single year she bred back directly after on that first heat cycle.

Fertility is very high on this cow family which then trickles down to all the bulls on offer. On every Flush 606D out does herself and give us and no stretch of the truth 21-26 #1 embryos on a conventional flush.

The bulls on offer are phenomenal. When we were sitting here trying our damndest to come up with unique and different ways to say the same thing, why struggle? They are just that. Damn good. When we have looked at ET bulls ourselves there has been a lot of varriance in just the physical look about them. Not the Adrenaline x 606D ET bulls.

They are all Deep, dark, great footed (not perfect as you know me there’s always something to work on) But they are so close. Long spined, nice sloping shoulders, defined muscling (Not just one but all) and pure power and grace. The females we got we kept every single one of them. And yes, we had to beat Shane and Mark Holowaychuck off with a stick they wanted them so bad for Roundup and Masterpiece sale. We compromised and said we flushed 606D the same way for the second time and cross our fingers we get a more females and can offer a pick down the road.

So, buy them up for the most consistent group of calves you’ll have, and keep every single female they throw.

TERMS The terms of the sale are cash or cheque at par. No releases will be given until satisfactory settlement has been made. All monies are in Canadian Funds, other funds will be accepted at the current rate of exchange. BIDS Every animal entering the ring will be sold to the highest bidder. All animals sell under the terms and conditions set forth by the Canadian Angus Association. Buyer is not responsible for more then the purchase price of the animal. DISPUTES In case of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision in such matters will be final.
