WEEKEND INFORMATION

Welcome to Whitewood,

On behalf of town council and the residents of Whitewood, I would like to welcome everyone to the 8th Annual Farmers and Friends Bonspiel.

Whitewood is a small town with a big heart. And at the centre of that heart are the people who come together to make events like this happen. Paired with top notch recreational facilities, Whitewood has become known as a must visit place in both winter and summer. Whether you come here for hockey, curling, golf or just to visit with family or friends, you will find our community welcoming and friendly.

The Farmers and Friends Bonspiel has become our community’s biggest annual event, and we couldn’t be prouder that it is something Whitewood is now known for. In fact, because of this event, Whitewood is now home to the world’s largest curling broom. Installed in the fall of 2024, the broom greets visitors into our community. Located at the north end of Lalonde Street next to the Flag Garden, the area will soon be developed into a beautiful park and rest stop for all to enjoy. So be sure to stop by and check out the newly installed broom sometime this weekend.

Since Farmers and Friends began in 2016, the event has raised more than $725,000, almost all of which has gone back to groups and organizations in Whitewood and surrounding communities. Whether you have been a curler, donor, spectator, or volunteer at any of these bonspiels over the years, your participation is what has made it the huge success that it is today; and for that, I can’t thank everyone enough.

In closing, as you are visiting our community, I hope you take time to enjoy our beautiful facilities and visit our local businesses, many of which sponsor this event to help make it a success. I wish you all good curling and hope you have a fun, enjoyable weekend with new and old friends.

Chris Ashfield, Mayor Town of Whitewood

WORLDS LARGEST CURLING BROOM

The idea of the World’s Largest Broom started 8 years ago - what could Whitewood build to put them on the map!? One night up in the curling lounge the broom idea was born! Whitewood was already known for one of the largest curling bonspiels it would only make sense for us to have the World’s Largest Broom!!

It took a while to get a plan and arrange contractors and materials, then COVID hit, and then the engineer that had been working on the design moved away. Once everything got back on track it took about 2 years to complete and in the fall of 2024 the broom was installed! Decals and landscapping will be completed this year to finish the project.

Thank you to the following businesses and contractors who helped contribute to this project and for their donations to make this a reality:

Hardline * Vaderstad * CORE * DK Duke Valley View Farms

Maximum Welding * Crushrite * Giroux Contracting * JK Metals

Town of Whitewood * John Hulbert Construction Ltd.

South Sask Rat Hole * Driftwood Engineering

THANK YOU!!

Thank you to everyone who has made this event such a success since 2016! This includes the curlers, volunteers, committee members, auction supporters and of course our generous sponsors! It has been incredible to see this event grow into something we never even imagined!

In 2016 our goal was to have a bonspiel with 32 rinks and raise a little extra money for our rink. That first year we kept getting teams to enter and managed to get to 64 teams the week before the event and the rest is history!

The Fundraiser auction was added just a couple weeks before the first spiel and then in 2017 the committee worked hard to really grow that. In the first two years we raised enough money to complete the Farmers & Friends lounge which has been a great addition to our facility. Each year this auction has grown and it has turned into an event in itself now!

With the bonspiel fundraising continuing to grow each year we started the grant program in 2018 in order to recognize that we have many sponsors and supporters from outside our community and wanted to help as many groups as possible with the funds from the bonspiel.

To date the bonspiel has raised over $720,000 which is truly hard to believe! Thank you to everyone who has made this possible, and especially the sponsors who come back year after year to support this amazing event!!

A new record was set in 2024 raising $177,000 over the bonspiel weekend!!
