Hartlepool Council is seeking nominations for either individuals or organisations to be granted a historic title.

The Honorary Freeman/Freewoman title is the highest honour that a Council can bestow and in the last forty years, it has only been awarded on eighteen occasions. It’s over three years since the Council last granted the historic title. Young people from across Teesside are celebrating after successfully achieving their Bronze Arts Awards, through participating in creative projects run by Tees Valley Arts.

Some of these young people have found themselves in difficult circumstances in life, but all have enjoyed taking part in the projects, and all can be very proud of what they have achieved.

43 young people gained their Bronze Arts Award through taking part in the following projects:Moving On: Moving on is a J Paul Getty Jr Foundation funded project which uses the arts to help give the young people in the care of the local authority a range of skills to help them to move on positively, adding value to the dedicated work of the Care Teams. stART: The stART Project worked with young people in the Borough of Stockton categorised as NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training), and delivered a package of creative activities and learning.

The project was funded through the Synergy VCS consortium, and TVA worked in partnership with Stockton Integrated Youth Services on

the project which took place at the Five Lamps’ Youthy in Thornaby Journeys: Young people from Middlesbrough worked on a drama project with local playwright Ishy Din, supported by drama workers.

They developed a play called ‘Alchemy’ about the history of Teesside, and it was performed at Middlesbrough myplace and Middlesbrough Town Hall Crypt. The project was funded by Arts Council England.

Risky Biz: TVA is working in partnership with Barnardo’s to support vulnerable young people through creative activities, and the project is funded by Comic Relief.

The Arts Award supports young people to develop as artists and arts leaders and inspires young people aged 7 to 25 to enjoy the arts.

Jane Gray, TVA Education Officer, commented: “The Arts Award is central to many of our initiatives, providing an opportunity to accredit young people’s achievement when participating in the creative arts.

One of the interesting aspects of Bronze Arts Award is the opportunity for young people to research their own arts hero and we have been astonished by heroes studied, ranging from the Notorious B.I.G to S usan Boyle via Adam Ant.”

A team from Tees Archaeology supported by volunteers carried out a series of digs in selected areas of the town centre North Cemetery.

And the excavations didn’t disappoint as they yielded vital evidence of some of the buildings which used to stand on the site.

Archaeologist Rachel Grahame said: “We excavated three trial trenches to look for evidence of three buildings, two chapels and a lodge, which early maps told us were here.

“We found the wall of the Church of England chapel and a layer of demolition rubble from when the building was demolished.

Within this rubble we found some nice pieces of coloured glass, presumably from the chapel’s windows.

“We also discovered evidence of the lodge which is where the cemetery caretaker would have lived and we now know that the buildings within the cemetery were made from local limestone.”

The trenches were cleaned and photographed and all of the “finds” documented before the land was fully restored by the dig team.

Information gleaned from the excavations is set to be included in a new 32-page history booklet that is currently being produced by the Friends of North Cemetery, a group of local people dedicated to promoting and protecting the historic cemetery.

Paralympic legend Tanni Grey-Thompson is urging a record number of North-Easterners to be on the startline for the SABIC Tees Pride 10k on 8th September.

Tanni is hoping that 5,000 people will be taking part this year in either the 10k race or 3k fun run that takes place on the same morning.

The Eaglescliffe-based multi-gold medallist, who previously lived in Redcar, said: “I’ve taken part in the race for many years and the atmosphere is one of the very best I’ve experienced.

“It’s a special event in terms of encouraging people to lead an active, healthy lifestyle.

“One of the targeted legacies of the London Olympics and Paralympics was encouraging more people of all ages to regularly take part in sport, so it would be very fitting if we saw record numbers taking part this year.”

Mayor Mallon announced earlier this year that after three successive election victories he will not be standing again.

He called for the public to be given the chance to decide whether they want to continue with the Mayoral model following his departure in 2015 and the full Council agreed a referendum should be held.

In September Middlesbrough residents will decide whether the council should continue to be led by a new Mayor elected by the public or by a leader elected by councillors.

Mayor Mallon said: : “After 13 years of a Mayoral system I think it’s right that another referendum be held. It’s entirely up to local people to decide how they wish to be governed.”

‘Pool together to beat Cancer’

MIDDLESBROUGH CITIZEN OF THE YEAR A Middlesbrough mum has been named as the town’s Citizen of the Year in recognition of her commitment to fostering and looked after children.

Jane Bailey, a 41-yearold mother of four has been fostering since 2000 and has cared for nearly 80 children on both a fulltime and emergency basis.

Supervising Social Worker Jane O’Toole nominated Jane for the accolade, and spoke of the

Pupils from St Thomas More Primary School joined representatives from Middlesbrough Council, Middlesbrough Environment City, the Environment Agency and Tees Valley Wildlife Trust at the Municipal Golf Centre for wildlife activities and a game of golf with a water vole and an otter!

The West Middlesbrough Becks Project will run over two years to improve stretches of Marton West Beck, Newham Beck and Bluebell Beck.

The project will see the creation of five new ponds, planting eight new reedbeds and removal of dense scrub to encourage more vegetation along the beck sides.

The project has received a grant of almost £50,000 from

Biffa Award, a multi-million pound environment fund managed by the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts (RSWT), which utilises landfill tax credits donated

by Biffa Waste Services.

It is being delivered by Middlesbrough Environment City, working with Middlesbrough Council and Tees Valley Wildlife Trust.

Greatham Sports Field Association inconjunction with The Northern Bygones Society are holding their 2nd Annual Vintage and Classic Car and Motor Bike Rally on Bank Holiday Monday 26th August at Greatham Sports Field witch is in Greatham Village near Hartlepool.

Police Dog Section Appeal for New Recruits Cleveland Police dog section is looking to recruit enthusiastic canines to assist in the war against drugs.

The dogs must be Labradors, Flat coated Retrievers, Pointers, Springers or Cocker Spaniels, aged over 12 months old. They will be trained to trace drugs in a course beginning in September.

If members of the public think they may have a dog which is suitable and wish to sell or donate it to Cleveland Police then contact Cleveland Police on the non-emergency 101 number and leave a message for Sergeant Shelli Gordon or Sergeant Al Turley.

Friends of Seaton Park, Hartlepool, are putting on a community funday on Monday 26th August 1pm-4pm.

The park is situated on the right hand side just before the sea front on Station Lane.

It is a celebration of Wild Green Spaces and Heritage Lottery funding they received for the ‘All Our Stories’ project, to find out the history of Seaton Carew park and what it means to the people who have used the park over the years.

The group are volunteers, residents, members of volunteer agencies and Council representatives, whose goal is to improve Seaton Park for the benefit of the public, by enhancing and creating facilities, and the general park environment.

They meet once a month at Seaton Methodist Church in Farndale Road, Seaton Carew, and are always looking for new members and volunteers of any age or walk of life.

Exciting times lay ahead for the park, as funding is gradually being secured, and local businesses have shown an interest in supporting their goals.

Particularly Heerema, whose contribution provided the sensory garden which is a wonderful addition to the Park.

Stockton - The Town that danced again

Diversity and a number of dance groups (made up of members of the local community) learn a dance routine, then ultimately perform as part of a bigger, mass dance event for Stockton.

The project was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Stockton and

Teesside as residents came together, to celebrate the community and show the rest of the UK what they can do.

‘The Town That Danced again’ will be broadcast on Sky 1 in October this year.

Described as “his most ambitious dance project to date” Ashley Banjo has been visiting locations across Stockton persuading people to join him in a street dance routine.

The High Street crowds became a fusion of excitement, while the sun shone and and everyone joined in.

Ashley said: “I have always believed that street dance is for everyone, whether you are part of a crew or going solo.

“This is the biggest challenge I have ever taken on.

All good things must come to an end. This has been one of the most amazing experiences of my life!

Still a lot of good left in the world.”

Stockton weekender wonder

Bernie said: “My son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes two years ago and, as a way of saying thanks, I thought I’d raise a few quid for diabetes charities.

I raised £4,100 through appeals on the radio, in the local press and twitter, and I’ve given £2,000 to the national diabetes fund and £2,100 to the team here at James Cook.”

Energy efficient housing with possibility to harvest renewable energy The next phase of a multi-million pound housing regeneration scheme in Stockton is moving forward.

Stockton Council's Planning Committee granted planning permission for 117 new homes in the Parkfield area of the town.

Tees Valley Housing submitted the planning application for the affordable two, three and four bed homes on a site bounded by Dovecot Street, Hartington Road, St Bernard’s Road and Worthing Street.

They will include new houses, bungalows and apartments which will be available for a variety of low cost housing options including affordable rent and shared ownership. The development will also incorporate a small park.

Building work is likely to start early next year and will take around three years to complete It is the second phase of the Parkfield regeneration programme which has already seen Dunelm Homes build a mix of two, three and four bedroom homes at Nursery Gardens.

Chris Munro, Area Manager at the Homes and Communities Agency, said: “This planning approval means that we can continue to invest in Stockton and work with the Council to make the necessary changes to the Parkfield area. The new houses that we are helping to fund will help ensure that local people can afford to live in good quality homes.”

Young people invited to explore the First World War

Young people in Hartlepool are being invited to explore the heritage of the First World War in a special two-year project marking the 100th anniversary of the start of the conflict.

Called ‘Seeds of Change’, the project is open to young people aged 13-19. It has been developed by the Arts For Teens Group – young people working with Hartlepool Council’s Youth Support Service (YSS) and Museums Service to develop better cultural opportunities for youngsters in the town.

The project is funded by a grant of £34,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) – money which the Arts For Teens Group secured after carrying out preliminary research for the project

including attending a theatre performance of ‘War Horse’ and visiting London’s Imperial War Museum.

The remainder of the cash is coming from the YSS. Lemon Top day came out on top!

A ‘Lemon Top Tourism’ event organised by the Teesside branch of the Federation of Small Businesses in association with North East Hotels Association, Welcome to Yorkshire, New Mind, Enterprise and Business Growth Team was held at The Palace Hub Redcar in July.

Guest speakers included: MP for Redcar Ian Swales, Richard Spencer (North East Hotels Association) Richard Veal (New Mind global e-tourism solutions) David Shields (Welcome to Yorkshire) the event finished with a trip to the Beacon and a free local lemon top ice cream along the promenade.

Redcar & Cleveland also held an event on Saturday 13th July with a lemon top being one of the highlights of a day, which was packed with fun activities for all.

In addition to a relay race, named after Redcar's famous ice cream, there will be sporting taster sessions, donkey rides and a number of other free activities on offer.

BUSINESS ORGANISATIONS JOIN FORCES TO PROTECT RESIDENTS FROM FLOODING Stockton Council and the Environment Agency are bidding for £1.2 million from Government to pay for flood defences at Lustrum Beck in Stockton.

Properties in the Lustrum Beck area were among those worst affected during last Autumn's floods. £415,000 for Stockton has already been secured from the North-East local levy to pay for a smaller scheme to reduce the risk of flooding at Brown’s Bridge.

The Environment Agency and Stockton Council have now submitted a bid for £1.2 million which would enable further flood defence and alleviation work to be undertaken for Lustrum Beck.

The causes of flooding in the area are complex and involve both surface water flooding as well as river flooding.

The Environment Agency, Stockton Council and Northumbrian Water Ltd are working together to secure funding and develop solutions to reduce the risk of flooding in this area. They have spent several months developing a bid for significant funding to improve flood defences there.

Stockton Council's Cabinet Member for the Environment, Councillor David Rose, said: "This is a significant step forward in the Council, Environment

Agency and Northumbrian Water’s efforts to tackle the issue of Lustrum Beck flooding, which can have devastating effects this has on people’s properties and their lives, as we saw in September 2012.

“The Council is committed to working with the Environment Agency and Northumbrian Water to do everything possible to secure funding to improve flood defences there. Residents have told me there has been little progress for more than a decade so I am pleased we secured the £415,000 funding, and that the Northumbria Regional Flood and Coast Committee has endorsed this further bid, therefore, acknowledging the significant need for extra funding to build appropriate flood defences.

I hope central Government can also see the undisputable need and release the £1.2 million required for the scheme.”

If the project is successful in attracting Government funding, the Environment Agency will develop and present a business case for the scheme.

Meanwhile Stockton Council has allocated £100,000 which is being spent on emergency defence measures like emergency pumps and flood barriers.

Entrust Growth Fund This new fund will offer loans of up to £50,000 to existing North East businesses capable of repaying a loan but struggling to secure mainstream financial backing for working capital and asset purchases.

There are no restrictions on the sector or business activity of applicants and it is also open to third sector organisations.

A typical loan term would be one to three years.

It is initially open for applications from now until December 2016 and is supported by the Regional Growth Fund programme, provided through the Community Development Finance Association.

It offers loans to small, micro and social enterprises through the community finance sector.

Loans may be subject to security.

Apprenticeship Initiative The Prime Minister has unveiled a new multi-million pound scheme which aims to produce an additional 10,000 engineering technicians by 2018. The initiative has been created by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Institute of Civil Engineers, and the Institution of Engineering and Technology and is backed by the Gatsby Foundation.

A number of small business owners are curious to establish other business owners views on recent banking ‘initiatives’.

The Circuit discovered that a number of local business have been ‘offered’ a business loan to replace any overdraft facility they may have with their bank. There does not appear to be any particular bank presenting this ‘option’, however, the way in which it is presented, leaves the business owner in no doubt that, if the loan is not accepted, then the overdraft facility will be withdrawn regardless.

Council appoints a new Director Hartlepool Council has appointed Gill Alexander as Director of Child and Adult Services.

Replacing Nicola Bailey, who left the authority late last year to take up a position in the NHS. The Mum of a teenage daughter is currently Director for Children, Young People and Learning for North Tyneside Council, a position she has held since 2005.

Prior to that she was Director of Education and Cultural Services at North Tyneside and has also worked as Assistant Divisional Director for Save the Children Fund and for Kirklees Council.

Under Ms Alexander’s stewardship, North Tyneside Council’s Children’s Services were ranked among the top three performers in the country in 2007 with the quality of leadership rated as “outstanding”.

Ms Alexander said: “Having worked in the North-East for the last 17 years I am well aware of Hartlepool Council’s reputation for delivering high quality public services.

“I am very excited about the opportunity to work in Hartlepool with its highly committed staff, councillors and partner organisations and to make a real difference to the

Traveller site chosen Hartlepool Council has chosen its preferred gypsy and traveller site in the town following a lengthy consultation process involving local residents.

The Hart Smallholdings West site, west of Hart Village off the A179 was chosen after the Council’s Finance and Policy Committee gave consideration to sixteen potential shortlisted sites. The site will only be developed if there is a future demand for it but under new Government planning guidelines, all councils now have to designate a gypsy and traveller site in their Local Plan.

Hartlepool Council originally identified land at Brenda Road as its preferred site but this was rejected by a Government Planning Inspector on grounds that it wasn’t deliverable.

The Council then identified 13 alternative potential sites and after reviewing, using the Government’s criteria, came up with a further three. Consultation exercises were carried out May, June and July on the three additional sites. Overall, the Council received 1,783 representations as a result of the consultation.

Hart Smallholdings East, located between Hart Village and Clavering, was chosen as the ‘fallback’ site, should the planning inspector for any reason refuse to accept Hart Smallholdings West.

Councillor Christopher Akers-Belcher, Chairman of the Finance and Policy Committee said: “It must be emphasised that there is no current demand for a site and it would only be developed in the future if a demand was identified.

Fourteen other sites were rejected by councillors for a number of reasons ranging from the size being unsuitable to hampering potential inward investment.

The 15-year-old has been declared the winner of Coast & Country’s Future Leaders initiative, where students from schools in the Redcar and Cleveland area are set the challenge of devising and organising schemes that will benefit the community.

The pupil who proves themselves the best over the task and a rigorous interview process is awarded an apprentice with the housing and regeneration company.

George, who attends Sacred Heart School, Redcar, will start his apprenticeship with Coast & Country in 2014 with the company working with the teenager to choose a career that’s best for him.

Under the innovative project, students from six schools were given a budget to organise community projects, these included 1940’s Tea dance, a children’s play area, the creation of garden area for a residential home.

The Future Leaders’ competitors had to bring

their schemes in on time and within budget and demonstrate they could work under their own initiative as well as part of a team.

The students presented their projects to a panel comprising, John Barnard, from Coast & Country’s Tenant Panel, Maggie Gee from its Residents Scrutiny group and Samantha Outwin, from its Human Resources department.

The decision was extremely difficult, but eventually the group announced Nunthorpe School as the winner for the best Community Project.

The next step was the recruitment process for those students who were interested in and had shown flair and potential for a three year apprenticeship with Coast & Country with 12 in total securing an interview.

Iain Sim, Chief Executive of Coast & Country, one of the largest regeneration and housing companies in the North East, said: “Young people are our future and it is important to help raise their ambitions and help them develop skills that will help them secure employment.

“The decision was a difficult one, but there could only be one winner.

It was a close call, but George demonstrated all the qualities we were looking for and we look forward to him coming on board as an apprentice next year.”

George said: “This is a life changing prize and I can hardly wait to start work with Coast & Country.

“Apprenticeships are

great because they combine hands-on practical experience and studying for qualifications at the same time. I am looking forward to working with Coast & Country to find the job that suits me.”

The schools that took part comprised Redcar Community College, Rye Hills, and Sacred Heart, all from Redcar, St Peters, South Bank, Nunthorpe Academy Nunthorpe and Bydales, Markse.

STOCKTON’S STUDENTS CELEBRATE STEPs 2 EMPLOYMENT Students at a Stockton school have been celebrating their achievements after completing a programme designed to enhance their employment prospects.

Thirty-five students at Abbey Hill School and Technology College completed the course, which was provided by Stockton Council’s STEPs service.

The STEPs service provides support for vocational training and employment opportunities to people with disabilities in the Borough.

The students enjoyed opportunities to access work experience, a work preparation programme and training to travel independently.

Nine of them were able to secure paid employment but all involved have benefited from the information, advice and guidance they received.

Councillor Ann McCoy, Stockton Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “The opportunity to work and be as independent as

possible is important to everyone. Young people with disabilities face a particular range of challenges - I’m delighted this programme is making a difference and helping these young people get into work.”

SPORT STOCKTON RAT RACE One of the most spectacular sporting events on Teesside is scheduled to take place on Sunday 25 August when a huge crowd of competitors will gather on the banks of the River Tees to participate in the Stockton Rat Race.

GOLF The juniors of Middlesbrough Golf Club are doing the club proud with their successes in local and national competitions. The team of James Swash, Bradley Jenkins and Jess Stephenson had early season success in winning the Teesside and District Junior Championship which qualified them for entry into the Yorkshire and District Union Junior Club Championship at Keighley. In an exciting and competitive day of golf three of the eight competing teams finished all square on 72 points, with the top two stableford points counting.

James 37 points off 8, Bradley 35 points off 9 and Jess 34 points off 12 were one of those teams and they collected the trophy as the third score was taken into account in the event of a tie – Jess with 34 points gave them a one point victory for the trophy.

SWIMMING 14 Year-old Hannah Featherstone from Stockton swims competitively for the Sedgefield 75 Swimming Club and her recent exploits leads club coach John Moore to identify as an Olympic or World champion of the future if her progress continues. Competing in the European Youth Olympic Festival in Holland Hannah won two silver and one bronze medal in the team events.

She followed that up with an outstanding display in the ASA National Championships in Sheffield to win the gold medal as winner of the 100m freestyle event.

Emma Cassell of Hartlepool and the Middlesbrough ASC produced some brilliant performances in the ASA National Age Group Championships.

She became national champion in winning gold in the 200m butterfly event and followed up with a 100m butterfly bronze medal

BODYBUILDING 17-year-old Dale Rennison of Coulby Newham won the Northern Under-20 title at the British Natural Bodybuilding Federation competition in Preston and has been invited to compete in Manchester in September in the BNBF British Championships.

ATHLETICS 57-year-old James Burns, formerly of Scotland but now living in Stockton, competed in the World Junior Cross Country Championships in Morocco as long ago as 1975 and finished in 10th place and 38 years later he is still going strong following a 20-year break from the sport. His foray back to Grangemouth in his native Scotland saw him competing in the Scottish Masters Athletics Championships to pick up silver medals in the 800m and 1,500m in personal best times.

However the M55 category race over 5,000m saw him produce an outstanding performance to win and collect the gold medal. Some lucky athletics club in the greater Teesside

14-year-old Mohamed Abdel-Aziz of Yarm competed in the Scottish Junior Open Championships and secured victory in his age group with victory against the number one seed Jo Tyler.

His outstanding performances in the championships has now elevated him to the position of number one seeding in the national rankings. Mohamed also represents Durham and Cleveland in the LTA County Cup and is one of the 400 youngsters recruited into the LTA Aegon Future Stars programme.

Teessider Mille Allen from Stainsby Grange in Thornaby won the silver medal for Great Britain in the Pony European Championships in Italy riding her father’s 10-year-old bay mare Song Girl.

BMX Youngster Mary Johnson of Billingham is a member of the North East BMX Club and Tees Active Sports Academy. The Northfield School pupil was amongst nearly 2,000 riders in all age groups in the European BMX Championships in Belgium where she competed in the 24 inch Cruiser and 20 inch BMX classes. In a very busy schedule Mary(13), fought her way through six qualifying heats and semi finals into two finals. Mary finished sixth in both finals and is now ranked No 2 in the UK in her age group following her performances.

JUDO The Thornaby Pavilion Judo Club collected four medals in the Southlands Judo Club competition Liam Doody(13) won gold in the Under 55kg category and gold also for Aadil Ahmed(11) in the Under 50kg category. Silver for Abdullah Ahmed(9) and bronze for Arron Porter(10) completed the medals haul to make their veteran club coach Joe Glynn(80) extremely proud of their performances.

CUE SPORTS Pool star Dan Harris of Redcar produced some outstanding cue work in the IPA Tour competition in Glasgow to battle through to two semi-finals before losing out to South African Sandile Madlala and Jimmy Carney. His top performances however has now moved him up to eighth placing in the GB amateur Pool rankings.

WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL Terry Bywater of Redcar followed his Paralympics bronze medal in Beijing and the scoring of 32 points over the Paralympics with oustanding performances in the European Wheelchair Basketball Championships in Frankfurt. A previous gold medal winner in the last European Championships was followed by a nailbiting final against Turkey. With the scores locked at 57-57 in the dying seconds of the final it was Terry who scored the winning basket with only four seconds remaining on the clock to give the GB team their gold medals.

ROWING The World Under-23 Rowing Championships held in Linz in Austria saw two Teesside Rowing Club and Tees Active members participate and collect medals as members of the Great Britain Women’s Eight team. Beth Ryan and Jo Wratten were members of the GB team that gave a brilliant performance to win their heat and qualify for the final. The GB Rowing Performance Director David Tanner said the crew gave their best ever performance in the final with a time of 6:19.51 to collect silver medals as runners-up the strong USA team.

One year on from the Olympics more than half of adults in the North East are doing the recommended amount of physical activity, but worryingly there are still people who are not doing enough exercise.

Latest statistics show that 30.1 per cent of adults in the North East are active for less than 30 minutes per week – prompting a call from Public Health Minister Anna Soubry for everyone to get up and get active.

To encourage this, the Department of Health has today announced more than £5 million of funding to encourage children and families to exercise more. £3 million for Change 4 Life Sports Clubs; £1.1 million for Street Play; and £1 million for walking initiatives.

Public Health Minister Anna Soubry said: “It’s fantastic that more than half of adults in the North East are doing the recommended amount of physical activity, but I am shocked that 30.1 per cent are not getting even 30 minutes of exercise a week.

“We were all inspired by the Olympics and as part of its legacy we want to encourage everyone, children and adults to get active and get healthy.

“We’re committed to doing everything we can to help people lead longer, healthier lives, which is why for the first time ever, we’ve given local authorities increased and ring-fenced budgets to tackle public health issues in their local area.”

The Youth Sport Trust will use the additional £3 million pounds to extend Change4Life School Sports Clubs to areas with the highest childhood obesity, building on the success of the 8,000 clubs already established across the country. In the North East, 340 primary schools will benefit from this funding.

Last year more than 100,000 children and young people took part in Change4Life sports clubs with double the amount of primary school children that attended exercising for an hour a day.

Chief Executive of the Youth Sport Trust John Steele said: “This new funding is a major boost and will help to build an even stronger network of school sport clubs across the country, offering young people the opportunity to try a range of new sports.

“Supporting schools to engage less active children in physical activity and school sport and making this fun is

BOOST FOR HARTLEPOOL Football in Hartlepool has received a major boost after the town scooped over £600,000 to build a top of the range pitch.

Hartlepool Council has bid for and won £602,800 from the Football Foundation towards the cost of building a full-size floodlit 3G (Third Generation) artificial turf pitch at Brierton Sports Centre. The remaining estimated £18,000 cost of the project will come from the Council itself.

The project will involve the Council working with a variety of different partner organisations - including Greatham Football Club which currently uses Brierton Sports Centre as its base – to further develop football in the town. Coupled with the £50,000 recently received from Sport England’s Protecting Playing Fields Programme, this grant will provide many new opportunities for people in Hartlepool to take part in sport , which is a cornerstone of the 2012 Olympic legacy for Brierton Community School site.

Earlier this year the government also announced £300 million of investment which will go directly into the hands of primary headteachers to spend on improving sport, PE and encouraging healthy lifestyles for their pupils over the next two years.

Director of Play England Cath Prisk said: “Active kids become active adults and we know one of the places kids are most active is on the streets outside their own houses when they are able to simply go out there and play, like most adults did.

“Everyone can do something to make their own communities more playful and we are very happy to be given this opportunity to support residents and local voluntary groups across England in making their own streets playful again.”

Regular physical activity can significantly reduce avoidable mortality and prevent conditions, such as stroke, heart disease and diabetes which cost the NHS £1 billion a year in England alone.

There are already lots of initiatives and projects which encourage people to get involved in physical activity and later this month the government will launch its new Change4Life campaign encouraging families to kick-start the new school year by being more active and eating healthier.
