JEFFERSON UROLOGY UPDATE

Dr. Leonard G. Gomella received the American Urological Association’s Distinguished Contribution Award for his achievements in the science and practice of urology, specifically the Clinician’s Pocket Reference (now in its 11th edition) widely used by medical students and healthcare providers. Dr. Costas D. Lallas was appointed the Vice Chair for Academic Affairs in the Department of Urology (effective May 1, 2015). Dr. Lallas is well known for his mentorship with students, residents and fellows. As Vice Chair, he will be engaged with the Jefferson Curriculum Committee and serve as the Associate Residency Program Director working closely with Dr. Patrick J. Shenot, Deputy Chair and Residency Program Director. In addition, Dr. Lallas will be actively engaged with Dr. Dolores Byrne, Educational Coordinator, and John Davis, Urology Residency Coordinator, for Jefferson Urology’s medical student-related academic activities. Recognized as an expert in robotic surgical procedures and education in the Philadelphia region, Dr. Lallas has also been appointed to serve as the new Chair of Robotics at Thomas Jefferson

University Hospital. Dr. Lallas has performed more than 1,000 robotic prostatectomies. Jefferson is a regional leader in minimally invasive surgery and a pioneer in laparoscopically assisted procedures. Dr. Lallas hopes to expand his research for developing more ways to improve patient outcomes. The Department of Urology is pleased to introduce its newest faculty member, Dr. Mark Mann, as an Assistant Professor of Urology at Sidney Kimmel Medical College. Dr. Mann was born and raised in New York City and attended Columbia College and Columbia’s College of Physicians and Surgeons for medical school, where he was awarded a prestigious Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship. He completed his urologic residency at Columbia University Medical Center/New York-Presbyterian Hospital in 2014 and served as the C.R. Bard Endourology and Laparoscopy Fellow at Jefferson from 2014-2015. In addition to expertise in general urology, Dr. Mann has specialized training in minimally invasive surgical techniques, including robotic prostatectomies and other laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures. Dr. Mann provides clinical care at Jefferson’s Center City campus, as well as the Methodist campus. Dr. Edouard J. Trabulsi, Associate Professor and Vice Chair for Regional Urology in the Department of Urology at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College, recently graduated from the inaugural class

of President Stephen Klasko’s new “Jefferson Leadership Academy.” Fiftyone members of the Jefferson community successfully completed this program, which requires a competitive application process. As part of this institutional initiative, Dr. Trabulsi was required to develop a strategic plan for the expansion of Jefferson’s Urology Network titled, “Expansion and Enhancement of Jefferson Urology Specialty Network.” The Jefferson Leadership Academy is a ten-month program to develop senior physician and administrative leaders as change agents, who will drive Jefferson’s transformation. The program was facilitated by faculty affiliated with Wharton Executive Education, as well as other national thought leaders, and included sessions on the Business of Health Care, Change Leadership, Innovation and more. Also effective May 1, 2015, Dr. Trabulsi assumed the position of Vice Chair for Regional Urology. Dr. Costas D. Lallas, new Chair of Robotics at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
