Dr. Gomella has been a prominent figure in the Jefferson community for 27 years. His years of devotion and service were acknowledged at the 13th Annual Jefferson Gala.

Dr. Leonard G. Gomella received the Achievement Award in Medicine at the 13th Annual Jefferson Gala held on December 8, 2015, in the Grand Ballroom at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown. More than 900 people attended the event. The award is presented annually at the Gala honoring a Jefferson physician who has embraced Jefferson’s mission, provided exemplary care to his or her patients, and been recognized as a leader in his or her field. Dr. Gomella is the Bernard W. Godwin, Jr. Professor of Prostate Cancer and Chair of the Department of Urology at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College and

Senior Director for Clinical Affairs for the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson. Additionally, he serves as the Clinical Director of the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center Network and the Urology Chair for Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (now NRG Oncology). During his tenure, Dr. Gomella has played a key role in developing new diagnostic techniques and treatments for prostate and bladder cancer. In 1990, Dr. Gomella initiated Jefferson’s urologic laparoscopic program, and in 1996 the GU Multidisciplinary Cancer Clinic. A prolific lecturer and author of sixty-three editions

of seventeen different medical books, Dr. Gomella has been acknowledged in local and national “Top Doctor” listings for many years. He has held many national leadership positions, including serving as President of the Mid-Atlantic Section of the American Urological Association, and is currently the President of the Society of Urologic Oncology. I am pleased to present to you our newly redesigned Jefferson Urology newsletter. Inside you will learn about the latest developments of our world-class department. On a very sad note Dr. S. Grant Mulholland, 7th Chair of the Department of Urology, passed away on December 22, 2015, after a long illness. You can read more about Grant’s career on page 3 of this newsletter. 2015 was otherwise a very good year for our Department. I was personally honored with two awards, one from the AUA and the 2015 Achievement Award in Medicine for Thomas Jefferson University. We appointed Dr. Scott Hubosky as the first Demetrius H. Bagley Professor, and once again we were recognized as one of the top Departments in the annual U.S. News rankings. Our Kimmel Cancer Center Men’s Event featured Mike and Molly’s Billy Gardell. We launched the Jefferson Urology Network and welcomed our first two Continued on page 3
