Dr. Gomella has been a prominent figure in the Jefferson community for 27 years. His years of devotion and service were acknowledged at the 13th Annual Jefferson Gala.

Dr. Leonard G. Gomella received the Achievement Award in Medicine at the 13th Annual Jefferson Gala held on December 8, 2015, in the Grand Ballroom at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown. More than 900 people attended the event.

The award is presented annually at the Gala honoring a Jefferson physician who has embraced Jefferson’s mission, provided exemplary care to his or her patients, and been recognized as a leader in his or her field.

Dr. Gomella is the Bernard W. Godwin, Jr. Professor of Prostate Cancer and Chair of the Department of Urology at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College and

Senior Director for Clinical Affairs for the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson.

Additionally, he serves as the Clinical Director of the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center Network and the Urology Chair for Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (now NRG Oncology).

During his tenure, Dr. Gomella has played a key role in developing new diagnostic techniques and treatments for prostate and bladder cancer. In 1990, Dr. Gomella initiated Jefferson’s urologic laparoscopic program, and in 1996 the GU Multidisciplinary Cancer Clinic.

A prolific lecturer and author of sixty-three editions

of seventeen different medical books, Dr. Gomella has been acknowledged in local and national “Top Doctor” listings for many years. He has held many national leadership positions, including serving as President of the Mid-Atlantic Section of the American Urological Association, and is currently the President of the Society of Urologic Oncology.

On a very sad note Dr. S. Grant Mulholland, 7th Chair of the Department of Urology, passed away on December 22, 2015, after a long illness.

You can read more about Grant’s career on page 3 of this newsletter.

2015 was otherwise a very good year for our Department. I was personally honored with two awards, one from the AUA and the 2015 Achievement Award in Medicine for Thomas Jefferson University.

We appointed Dr. Scott Hubosky as the first Demetrius H. Bagley Professor, and once again we were recognized as one of the top Departments in the annual U.S. News rankings. Our Kimmel Cancer Center Men’s Event featured Mike and Molly’s Billy Gardell. We launched the Jefferson Urology Network and welcomed our first two Continued on page 3

Dr. Leonard G. Gomella received the American Urological Association’s Distinguished Contribution Award for his achievements in the science and practice of urology, specifically the Clinician’s Pocket Reference (now in its 11th edition) widely used by medical students and healthcare providers.

Dr. Costas D. Lallas was appointed the Vice Chair for Academic Affairs in the Department of Urology (effective May 1, 2015). Dr. Lallas is well known for his mentorship with students, residents and fellows. As Vice Chair, he will be engaged with the Jefferson Curriculum Committee and serve as the Associate Residency Program Director working closely with Dr. Patrick J. Shenot, Deputy Chair and Residency Program Director. In addition, Dr. Lallas will be actively engaged with Dr. Dolores Byrne, Educational Coordinator, and John Davis, Urology Residency Coordinator, for Jefferson Urology’s medical student-related academic activities.

Recognized as an expert in robotic surgical procedures and education in the Philadelphia region, Dr. Lallas has also been appointed to serve as the new Chair of Robotics at Thomas Jefferson

University Hospital. Dr. Lallas has performed more than 1,000 robotic prostatectomies. Jefferson is a regional leader in minimally invasive surgery and a pioneer in laparoscopically assisted procedures. Dr. Lallas hopes to expand his research for developing more ways to improve patient outcomes.

The Department of Urology is pleased to introduce its newest faculty member, Dr. Mark Mann, as an Assistant Professor of Urology at Sidney Kimmel Medical College. Dr. Mann was born and raised in New York City and attended Columbia College and Columbia’s College of Physicians and Surgeons for medical school, where he was awarded a prestigious Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship. He completed his urologic residency at Columbia University Medical Center/New York-Presbyterian Hospital in 2014 and served as the C.R. Bard Endourology and Laparoscopy Fellow at Jefferson from 2014-2015. In addition to expertise in general urology, Dr. Mann has specialized training in minimally invasive surgical techniques, including robotic prostatectomies and other laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures. Dr. Mann provides clinical care at Jefferson’s Center City campus, as well as the Methodist campus.

of President Stephen Klasko’s new “Jefferson Leadership Academy.” Fiftyone members of the Jefferson community successfully completed this program, which requires a competitive application process. As part of this institutional initiative, Dr. Trabulsi was required to develop a strategic plan for the expansion of Jefferson’s Urology Network titled, “Expansion and Enhancement of Jefferson Urology Specialty Network.”

The Jefferson Leadership Academy is a ten-month program to develop senior physician and administrative leaders as change agents, who will drive Jefferson’s transformation. The program was facilitated by faculty affiliated with Wharton Executive Education, as well as other national thought leaders, and included sessions on the Business of Health Care, Change Leadership, Innovation and more. Also effective May 1, 2015, Dr. Trabulsi assumed the position of Vice Chair for Regional Urology.

Department News Remembering Dr. S. Grant Mulholland, 7th Urology Chair Dr. S. Grant Mulholland was appointed as the Nathan Lewis Hatfield Professor and Head of the Department of Urology in 1977, and served as the Department’s seventh Chair from 1977 to 2002. He followed closely in his father footsteps, Dr. Stanford Wallace Mulholland, a prominent Philadelphia urologist, who was Professor and Chair of the Department of Urology at the Medical College of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Mulholland received his B.S. from Dickenson and his MD from Temple University, and did his urologic training at the University of Virginia, while also obtaining an M.S. in 1966.

Upon serving in the Navy during the Vietnam War, he returned to Philadelphia and accepted a position at the University of Pennsylvania.

Subsequently, he attended at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the Veterans Hospital of Philadelphia, and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

At the initial time of Dr. Mulholland’s Jefferson Chairmanship in 1977, the Department of Urology was almost completely composed of volunteer faculty, who were talented clinicians with large practices.

During his tenure, he established a premier academic unit by adding new specialties and additional practicing urologists offering both primary and tertiary urologic care. At the end of Dr. Mulholland’s tenure as chair in 2002, the Department of Urology consisted of 77 employees, including fourteen attendings, eight residents, two PhDs, and several clinical fellows and post-docs. Dr. Mulholland passed away on December 22, 2015.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, Mulholland can be donated to the S. Grant February 6, at the Salvation Army Kroc Center Mulholland Research and Educational Fund on Wissahickon Avenue. Memorial gifts for Dr. established at Thomas Jefferson University.

Congratulations to Dr. Leonard Gomella on the release of the 3rd Edition of The 5-Minute Urology Consult. The 2015 edition includes information on hundreds of urologic diseases and conditions, useful algorithms, and a detailed urologic drug reference along with an online image library. Since the first edition was released in 2000, the book has become a standard “go to” desk reference for urologists worldwide. A recent Amazon customer review stated: “A great resource... succinct, clear and easy to read. I used [it] as a training tool for a physician assistant. Would recommend!”

Our new TJU President, Dr. Steve Klasko, has forged many new regional relationships including partnerships with Abington, Aria Health and the newest letter of intent to explore a high-level relationship with the Kennedy system in South Jersey. Due to this rapid expansion of the Jefferson Health System, Dr. Edouard Trabulsi has been named Vice Chair for Regional Urology to aid in managing this regional expansion and our increased patient volume.

Our outpatient office at 833 Chestnut welcomed an outstanding new practice operations manager, Mrs. Marlene Vallet. Marlene has more than 30 years experience at Jefferson, and her knowledge of all IT and telecommunications systems has been a real plus for our patients and staff. Our students continue to be successful in the highly competitive urology residency match, and we welcome our newest faculty member, Dr. Mark Mann. Our UroNav fusion prostate biopsy system in the Urologic Diagnostic Center at 833 Chestnut continues to be in high demand.

After more than 35 years of engagement with the Wilmington VA, our residents will no longer rotate there as of June 2016. Ours was the last Jefferson program to have full-time resident coverage there.

For the 2015-2016 academic year, Jefferson’s Department of Urology has received 321 electronic submissions; forty-one applicants were granted interviews. Nationally, 295 urology positions were available this year. The match rate for U.S. senior medical students was 77%, making urology programs one of the more competitive specialties. Programs ranked 372 individuals with 294 applicants matched and 123 not matched. The department is grateful for the orchestrations of Dr. Patrick Shenot, Residency Program Director, who coordinates this successful program with the support of Dr. Dolores Byrne, Educational Coordinator, and John Davis, the Department’s Residency Coordinator.

The official 2016 match results will be announced in early 2016.

Dr. Daniel Verges has been matched as a one-year fellow for the academic year 2016-17 through the Endourology Society. Dr. Verges is currently finishing his first year as Chief Resident at SUNY Downstate, New York, and will be our C.R. Bard Fellow in MIS Urologic Surgery starting in July 2016. Dr. Verges attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine where he also received his bachelor’s degree. He served as an Administrative Resident/Academics Coordinator then a Resident Physician at SUNY Downstate Medical Center.

Since 2014, he has served as a liaison for his residency program and the American Urological Association Resident Committee, and is a current member of the AMA, AUA, and Alpha Omega Alpha Society.

AUA Lessons in Urology Course & Sociedad Peruana de Urologia (SPU) Annual Meeting

Every year, the American Urological Association (AUA) sponsors the International Resident Program, which allows residents from selected partner nations to attend the AUA Annual Meeting. This program exposes international residents to cutting-edge science on a broad range of urologic topics and to social events where they interact with members and leaders of the AUA. In reciprocity, the Sociedad Peruana de Urologia (SPU) invited Dr. Hong Truong (PGY 1, General Surgery/ Urology) from the AUA to attend the 3rd AUA Lessons in Urology Course and the SPU Annual Meeting in Trujillo, Peru, last August (Top photo).

The scientific program consists of three educational components: updates of selected AUA clinical guidelines and reviews of the scientific evidence supporting the guidelines; interactive discussion on management strategies and surgical techniques for a wide range of urological diseases; and resident research presentations. This year, the conference addressed AUA guidelines for urolithiasis, genitourinary trauma, BPH, prostate cancer, and renal cancer.

Attendees at the plenary session also discussed both traditional and advanced surgical techniques, including laparoscopic lithotomy for complex stone treatment and robotic management of IVC thrombectomy and urinary diversion.

The SPU also hosted social events that showcased the rich Peruvian culture, delectable cuisine, and generous hospitality. At these events, urologists and residents from all over South America mingled and networked.

SKMC Resident Participates in IVUmed Resident Scholarship Program in Ghana

Dr. Michael Amirian recently participated in the IVUmed International Medical Program traveling to Kumasi, Ghana, where he and a team of doctors and nurses performed a complex hypospadias repair on a young boy (pictured bottom right). Dr. Amirian’s scholarship experience was made possible by the generous support of the Mid-Atlantic Section of the American Urological Association. degrees. One that I found particularly challenging was that of an 11-year-old girl,” said Dr. Amirian. “She was born with bladder exstrophy and had suffered her entire life with this condition. Her bladder, after years of exposure to the environment, was ulcerated and excoriated. She was in constant pain [and] completely incontinent. Needless to say, her quality of life was abysmal.

Many of the usual reconstructive options were limited, as she would not have any long-term accessibility to catheters.

We re-implanted her ureters into her sigmoid colon in a procedure [known as] the modified Mainz II Pouch. It was remarkable to see her joy and big smile the next day when she looked down and no longer saw her constant source of pain.”

Dr. Amirian acknowledged the help, guidance and support he received from the IVUmed organization, the MidAtlantic AUA, and nominating physician Dr. Edouard Trabulsi. IVUmed is committed to providing medical and surgical education to physicians and nurses, thereby making quality urological care available to thousands of children and adults worldwide.

2015 Chief Residents Graduation at Philadelphia Zoo

Jefferson’s Department of Urology bid farewell to its Chief Residents-Drs. J. Ryan Mark, Douglas Kelly, and Arjun Khosla. The graduation was held immediately after Dr. Robert Flanigan’s David M. Davis, MD, Visiting Professor event. Drs. Leonard and Tricia Gomella hosted the graduation banquet at the Philadelphia Zoo, America’s first zoo.

Dr. Mark is continuing his training as a fellow in Urologic Oncology at The Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C. Dr. Kelly is relocating to Virginia Beach to complete a fellowship in robotics and minimally invasive urology.

Dr. Khosla is pursuing a fellowship in minimally invasive urologic oncology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Mass.

Research Spotlight Genomics Research of Drs. Gomella & Den Featured in Philadelphia Inquirer

Newsweek Magazine named Drs. Leonard Gomella and Edouard J. Trabulsi to its list of “Top Cancer Physicians in the United States.”

The list was compiled through peer nominations and extensive research, which Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. has conducted for more than two decades.

Congratulations to Drs. Leonard Gomella, Scott Hubosky, Costas Lallas, Patrick Shenot, Edouard Trabulsi, and Ahmad Bani Hani for being named as “Top Docs in Urology” by Suburban Life in their August 2015 edition in recognition of their exemplary patient care.

Physicians in the Philadelphia area are chosen based on their devotion to preserving and improving health for local men.

Dr. Edouard Trabulsi, Associate Professor of Urology, presented his research using a novel compound with PET imaging at the American Association for Cancer Research’s (AACR) annual meeting in June. The research showed how PET imaging could identify foci of prostate cancer not found on a biopsy of the prostate pre-surgery or post-surgery specimen. According to Dr. Trabulsi, the technique utilizes TP3805, a Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide and Pituitary Adenylate Cyclase Activating Peptide Receptor 1 (VPAC1) when imaging patients with prostate cancer. The researchers examined 25 men diagnosed with prostate cancer slated for radical prostatectomy imaged preoperatively with PET imaging targeting VPAC1. All men underwent a conventional biopsy and surgery. The preoperative scans were compared with the pathology of the surgical and biopsy specimens. Results accurately identified foci of prostate cancer within the gland prior to surgery.

Future studies will examine elevated PSA and previously negative biopsies to determine whether PET targeted to VPAC1 can identify areas of prostate cancer within the gland.

by Philadelphia Magazine. Leading doctors, specialists, chiefs of service, and healthcare executives made nominations on various criteria, including education, experience, discipline history, and professional reputation. This is a great honor to the individuals, but also brings positive recognition to the Department of Urology and Jefferson.

JEFFERSON UROLOGY UPDATE

Dr. Leonard Gomella, Chair of Urology, and Dr. Robert Den, Radiation Oncology, were featured in the Health Section of the Philadelphia Inquirer in an article titled, “Genomics, Studies Try to Uncover Prostate Cancer.”

Dr. Gomella explained how researchers at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University believe they are narrowing in on solving the complexities of prostate cancer through increasingly sophisticated genetic studies and testing, which may help unlock another mystery of the disease: Why are African American men more likely than others to suffer the most aggressive forms of it?

The article also cited how researchers at Jefferson and three other institutions associated some of the genes with a particularly aggressive form of the disease, which tends to spread to the lymph nodes or liver even after surgery.

“This whole area of genomics is taking everything by storm right now,” said Dr. Gomella. “It’s had a major impact on urology over the past two or three years.”

Dr. Robert C. Flanigan, David M. Davis, MD, Visiting Professor Jefferson’s Department of Urology welcomes Dr. Robert C. Flanigan, The Albert J. Speh, Jr. and Claire R. Speh Professor and Chair in Urology at Loyola University Medical Center, Stritch School of Medicine (pictured above), as the David M. Davis, MD, Visiting Professor. Dr. Flanigan has been actively involved in basic and clinical research throughout his career. He has contributed more than 350 publications to medical literature and is currently the International Education Consultant for the American Urological Association. He was also the founder and first president of the Society of Urologic Chairpersons and Program Directors. He has served as the Principal Investigator for Loyola University Medical Center of the NIH-funded Urologic Cancer Outreach Program from 1988-2012 and is a PI on all NIH-funded ROI grants for prostate cancer. Dr. Flanigan’s primarily research interests focus on renal, prostate, and bladder cancers.

Visiting Fellow from China A special welcome is extended to Dr. Jiaming Liu, an attending physician in the Department of Urology at West China Hospital, Sichuan University, who is visiting the Department of Urology for six months observing clinical activities and participating in the research laboratory. Dr. Liu is a graduate of Sichuan University and is currently focusing his research on urinary tumors, reconstructive urology, tissue engineering and medical education.

His research includes the development of a test model and kit for individual prophylaxis and diagnosis for prostate cancer based on the gene polymorphism FPRP research. Additionally, he is exploring the flavone extraction, separation, and determination from the lotus leaf and its anticancer effect on prostate cancer.

L. William Ferris, MD, Memorial Lectureship in Pediatric Urology On October 7, Jefferson’s Department of Urology welcomed Dr. David A. Diamond (pictured page 7, center) for the 2015 L. William Ferris, MD, Pediatric Urology Visiting Professor Lectureship, co-sponsored by the Delaware Academy of Medicine and the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. Dr. Diamond presented, “From Intersex to DSD’s-A Field in Transition” and “A Pictorial History of Boston Children’s Hospital.”

Dr. Diamond received his medical degree from the University of Rochester and did a urology residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He has been the Urologist-in-Chief at Boston Children’s Hospital for twenty years and also serves as Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Diamond is recognized as an internationally prominent urological surgeon and has particular expertise in adolescent varicocele and treating children with disorders of sexual differentiation.

Jefferson’s Department of Urology had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Joel B. Nelson as the 2015 P. Kenneth Brownstein, MD, Lecture on November 18-19. Dr. Nelson is the Frederic N. Schwentker Professor and Chair, Department of Urology, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and Co-director of the Prostate and Urologic Cancer Center University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. Dr. Nelson’s clinical interests include prostate cancer and other urinary tract malignancies.

He is one of the country’s leading surgeons performing nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy. His research focuses on new ways to treat advanced prostate cancer that no longer responds

to hormone therapy. Dr. Nelson has gained considerable recognition for his clinical work and research; has been featured in several publications due to the great strides he has made in the treatment of prostate cancer; and is the recipient of multiple awards. For four consecutive years, he received a research award from the CaPCURE Foundation, an organization established to fund promising research on prostate cancer. In addition, Dr. Nelson also serves on the consulting editors board for the scientific journal, Urology, and is an ad hoc reviewer for several other medical publications, including The New England Journal of Medicine.

2015 AUA Annual Meeting

Drs. Kelly Healy, Assistant Professor at Sidney Kimmel Medical College, and Demetrius Bagley, Nathan Lewis Hatfield Professor of Urology, presented a report on the inherent dangers faced by urologists at the American Urological Association’s Annual Meeting in New Orleans last May. Drs. Healy and Bagley sought to assess urologists’ recognition of these risks, as well as what implementation of safety procedures was used in routine clinical practice. They cited how urologists can better manage risk exposure in their contemporary practice throughout the workplace and when dealing with patients.

Using a sixteen-item Internet survey, the authors disseminated and received feedback from nearly 300 members of the Endourological Society. The survey assessed exposure to workplace dangers and safety measures in practice at the various institutions polled. Demographic information included age, gender, professional setting, and years in practice.

A majority of survey respondents were males over the age of 40, who had clinical experience in practice greater than ten years (65%). Furthermore, more than 70% of the respondents were from academic and university settings with another 25% of responses received from private practitioners. Most respondents completed coursework or training regarding radiation, lasers, and general operating room safety. Despite this, some findings of note included a majority of urologists failing to wear laser goggles, underutilization of face shields, and a decreased tendency to double-glove with an incidence of needle sticks in this cohort of nearly 80%.

Several urologists also reported violent patient encounters in their lifetime experiences and other workrelated injuries, including falls and musculoskeletal injuries. With such reported trends of commonly experienced workplace dangers, Drs. Healy and Bagley concluded that a “discordance between knowledge of safety measures and their implementation in practice” existed. Results indicate the necessity for future work on investigations regarding understanding reasons for noncompliance of safety protocols while increasing education efforts. Potential barriers, including availability and affordability of protective gear, should also be evaluated and resolved to protect urologists from these dangers.

Dr. Leonard Gomella, President of the Society of Urologic Oncology, presents the Society’s Huggins Medal to 2015 recipient Dr. Jay Smith. Dr. Smith is Chair Emeritus of Vanderbilt University and serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Urology. The medal was presented during the SUO winter meeting held in Washington, D.C., in December 2015.

Urology Symposium in Avalon

The Urology Symposium was held on September 12 at the Rock ’N Chair Restaurant in Avalon, N.J. The conference provides a forum for reviewing and updating myriad urology topics and the newest developments in specific areas, which can be applicable to practice at many levels. This year’s guest speakers included Dr. Michael Erhard, a resident at Jefferson from 1991-1995, Medical Director, Division of Pediatric Urology, Department of Surgery, Nemours Children’s Clinic, Jacksonville, Fla. and Chief of Pediatric Urology for Wolfson Children’s Hospital and Nemours, Jacksonville; Dr. Michael Grasso, III, a resident at Jefferson from 1989-1992, current Professor and Vice Chairman of Urology, Medical College of New York, Valhalla, N.Y.; and Dr. Dana Weiss, Attending Pediatric Urologist in the Division of Urology at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Topics included urethral reconstruction; upper tract urothelial carcinoma-long term follow up; diagnosis and treatment of large upper tract tumors; overactive bladder; laser treatment of the enlarged prostate; remote-presence devices; cystine stones; enhanced cystoscopic imaging; V-PAC Copper 64 PET imaging of prostate cancer; pediatric urotrauma; and management of stents in children.

Attendees received CME credits as part of their continuing medical education requirements.

16th Annual Meeting of the Society in Urologic Oncology

“Extraordinary Opportunities for Discovery” was the theme of the 16th Annual Scientific Meeting in Urologic Oncology held December 2-4 at the Renaissance Washington, D.C., Downtown Hotel. The Society of Urologic Oncology sponsored this highly interactive meeting in which attendees participate in discussions led by internationally renowned urologic oncologists, medical oncologists, and scientists. State-of-the-art translational topics on prostate, kidney, and bladder cancers, as well as strategies in urologic oncology, were discussed. This year’s meeting also featured a special program, “Focus on Orphan Diseases in Urologic Oncology.” The meeting is designed to be a discussion of issues among members of the urologic oncology community. In addition to the SUO activities of Dr. Leonard Gomella, current President of the SUO, and Dr. Ed Trabulsi, SUO Board Member, several other Jefferson faculty were involved with the meeting.

This included presentations by Urology faculty Drs. Gomella, Trabulsi, Lallas, Kelly, Hubosky and Healy, and Urology resident Hong Truong. Our team presented on topics including upper tract urothelial carcinoma, genetic counseling and prostate cancer.

Event News The 6th Annual Men’s Event was held on April 22, 2015, at the Union League of Philadelphia. Honorary Co-chairs Dr. Karen E. Knudsen, Director of the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center, Chair, Cancer Biology, and Dr. Leonard G. Gomella, Chair, Department of Urology, welcomed guests to an evening of cocktails, dinner and entertainment.

Dr. Knudsen addressed the gathering stressing the need to support all the men in our lives. Special guest performer Billy Gardell, star of the CBS hit television series, Mike & Molly, provided entertainment. Proceeds from the event support prostate cancer research and awareness. Mr. Paul Stankard, renowned South Jersey Glass artist received the Spirit of Courage Award.

More than sixty members of the Jefferson community along with friends of Jefferson (Photo 4) participated in the Gary Papa Father’s Day Run for Prostate Cancer held on Father’s Day in June. Thanks to Dr. Mike Amirian (PGY4/Urology) who tweeted the team photo, which was picked up by ABC and other media outlets. The run was established to honor the memory of the Action News sports anchor, to raise money for the Foundation for Breast and Prostate Health, and build awareness of breast and prostate cancer-related issues. Jefferson’s valued patient advocate and Team KCC supporter, Mr. John Buehler, did a special interview with 6ABC highlighting Jefferson. Dr. Costas Lallas serves as Team Jefferson Captain.

The 2014 Phightin Philadelphians Walk for Bladder Cancer was held on Saturday, May 3. Team Jefferson participated in the walk to raise awareness of and support for bladder cancer research. The grand total of funds raised for the Philadelphia Walk was $6,000; Team Jefferson raised $2,901.

Philanthropy News Urology Receives Research Support from Schorsch Family The Schorsch Family recently donated $145,000 to Jefferson with $50,000 designated to the Department of Urology to support the basic science prostate cancer research of Drs. Ryuta Tanimoto and Andrea Morrione.

Their research will focus on studying sortilin, a unique chemical compound that could be targeted in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer.

Sortilin regulates progranulin, a compound that stimulates prostate cancer growth.

Dr. Morrione’s laboratory efforts have focused on progranulin action and supervising Dr. Tanimoto’s basic science work. Dr. Tanimoto is currently the Bard-Storz Fellow in the Department of Urology. He is entering his third year as a Fellow in the Department of Urology for the 2015-2016 academic year and is an Assistant Professor of Urology at Okayama University Graduate School of Medicine in Okayama, Japan.

The Schorsch family has made this gift in honor of Drs. Ken Brownstein, Kevin Kelly, and Greg Kane as a memorial to the late Irvin Schorsch Jr. The Schorsch Family Fund for Innovative Medical Research and Care has also provided generous contributions to Dr. Kelly, Associate Director of the Kimmel Cancer Center, and Dr. Kane, Chair of Medicine, in support of their research and patient care activities.

During dinner, Dr. Stephen Klasko, president and CEO of Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health, described the latest technologies being used in integrative medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

Following his remarks, Dr. Klasko paid tribute to the evening’s honorees for their contributions to health care and medicine at Thomas Jefferson Hospital.

The Award of Merit was presented to Bernie and Billi Marcus for their lasting impact as philanthropists and public servants. Dr. Gomella, renowned for his translational clinical research, received the Achievement Award in Medicine for his years of service, dedication and commitment to Jefferson’s mission as a member of its medical community.

“A Night to Remember, A Future to Reimagine” was the theme of the 13th Annual Jefferson Gala held on December 8 at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown. Thomas Jefferson Hospital leaders and special guests gathered to honor and celebrate the contributions and leadership of Bernie and Billi Marcus, Home Depot Co-Founders, and Dr. Leonard G. Gomella.

Dr. Hubosky Becomes 1st Demetrius H. Bagley Jr., MD, Professor Dr. Scott G. Hubosky, Director of Endourology and Vice Chair of Quality Safety for Jefferson’s Department of Urology, became the first Demetrius H. Bagley Jr., MD, Professor of Urology.

The professorship was established to honor Dr. Bagley for his expertise and pioneering advances as a worldrenowned inventor, author, educator, lecturer, and surgeon in the field of urology, specifically endourology.

The Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University awarded the professorship to express its gratitude to Dr. Hubosky for his clinical and academic leadership in

the field of urology. Dr. Hubosky has been instrumental through his work with patients suffering from complex endourological problems. He leads the department in operating room volume in terms of both cases and hours.

Dr. Hubosky will serve a threeyear term while efforts continue to permanently endow the Professorship.
