Dear Friends, It is our pleasure to welcome everyone to the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York’s 2019 Gala Dinner. The core mission of JCRC-NY is to protect and enhance the quality of life of the New York Jewish community and of all New Yorkers. To accomplish its goals, JCRC-NY has always devoted a significant portion of its resources to security concerns and communitybridging programs—emphasizing the values and interests that unite all New Yorkers, Jews and non-Jews alike.

As we celebrate our achievements this evening, we are pleased to pay tribute to JCRC-NY President Charles S. Temel, recipient of the JCRC-NY Leadership Award, and Hon. Letitia James, New York State Attorney General, recipient of the Public Service Award. We are privileged to recognize these outstanding individuals for their commitment, dedication and leadership.

We want to extend a special thank you to our Gala Co-Chairs, Development Co-Chairs Maggi Sedlis Goldstein, Marissa J. Shorenstein and Simon “Shimi” Pelman, and Development Committee. PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD Hon. Letitia James

New York State Attorney General

Letitia “Tish” James is the 67th Attorney General for the State of New York. With decades of work, she is an experienced attorney and public servant with a long record of accomplishments.

She is the first woman of color to hold statewide office in New York and the first woman to be elected Attorney General.

Ms. James has a proven record of support for the New York Jewish community and the State of Israel.

A good friend of JCRC-NY, Ms. James participated in a mission to Israel in 2015 for community leaders.

She was also a featured speaker at many rallies and press conferences over the years for Israel and against anti-Semitism.

In 2013, Ms. James was elected Public Advocate for the City of New York and became the first woman of color to hold citywide office. As Public Advocate, Ms. James served as a watchdog over New York City government agencies and as an advocate for the City’s most vulnerable communities.

She transformed the Public Advocate’s office to be a formidable engine for change.

Her office handled over 32,000 constituent complaints and passed more legislation than all previous Public Advocates combined, including a groundbreaking law that banned questions about salary history from the employment process to address the pervasive gender wage gap. Ms. James successfully took on the gun industry by pushing New York City’s largest pension fund to divest from gun and ammunition retailers. She fought in court on behalf of children and families on issues including children in foster care, children with disabilities, and tenant protection. New Yorkers overwhelmingly elected Tish James to a second term as Public Advocate in November 2017.

Prior to serving as Public Advocate, Tish James represented the 35th Council District in Brooklyn in the New York City Council for ten years. As a Council Member, she passed the Safe Housing Act, legislation that forced landlords to improve living conditions for tenants in New York City’s worst buildings. She helped uncover the corruption behind the Office of Payroll Administration’s CityTime contract, a scheme that cost New York City over $600 million. She also pushed through a revolutionary recycling package that included expanding plastic recycling, a new clothing and textile recycling program, and increased access to recycling in public spaces.

Before her election to the City Council, Tish James served as head of the Brooklyn Regional Office of the New York State Attorney General’s Office. She resolved hundreds of consumer complaints and investigated predatory lenders who preyed on first-time homebuyers. She assisted the Civil Rights Bureau in its investigation of the NYPD’s stop-and-frisk policy and cracked down on firms engaged in deceptive business practices including violations of human rights, environmental laws, and scams targeting immigrants.

Tish James began her career as a public defender at the Legal Aid Society. A proud Brooklynite, she is a graduate of Lehman College and Howard University School of Law. 4

President, JCRC-NY Managing Director, UBS Financial Services, Inc.

Charles S. Temel is a Managing Director and a Private Wealth Advisor at UBS Financial Services, Inc. He has worked in the financial services industry for over 40 years, advising clients, foundations and endowments.

Charlie was named by the Financial Times as one of the “Top 400 Financial Advisors in the United States” each year from 2014-2019. He was also named to the 2018 and 2019 Forbes— Best-In-State Wealth Advisors List. Most recently, he was honored to be named as one of Barron’s Best in State Advisors for 2019. He is a certified investment management analyst and a member of the Investment Management Consultants Association.

Charlie’s commitment to his community has included involvement in many nonprofit organizations over the years. Currently, he is the President of the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York, where he has been on the Board of Directors for more than 20 years. He also serves on the American Friends of Ben-Gurion University Investment Committee, which he previously chaired. Charlie graduated from Cornell University with a B.A. in Economics. He chaired the Cornell University Library Advisory Council and is a founding member of the Friends of Jewish Studies at Cornell. He is also a lifetime member of the Cornell University Council.

He lives in New York with his wife, Judy, a municipal bond expert and the author of the Fundamentals of Municipal Bonds, 5th Edition. They have three adult children and one adorable grandson.
