PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD

THOMAS P. DINAPOLI NEW YORK STATE COMPTROLLER Thomas P. DiNapoli is the 54th Comptroller of the State of New York. Tom was elected State Comptroller on Feb. 7, 2007 by a bipartisan majority of the State Legislature to fill a vacancy in the office. He was elected Comptroller by the voters in 2010 and re-elected in 2014. Tom is known for his integrity, independence and even-keeled leadership. His record as State Comptroller reflects an unwavering commitment to protect the people’s money, keep government accountable and build toward a better future for New Yorkers. As the trustee of the state pension fund, Tom has spoken out against the boycott, divest and sanctions movement (BDS). Under his leadership, New York led the way and was the second pension fund in the nation to aggressively pursue shareholder actions with companies engaged in BDS activities. Tom said the BDS movement doesn’t make sense from a moral perspective or from an investor perspective. He is firm that the state pension fund will continue to stand with Israel by investing in Israel and protecting its investments there. The state pension fund currently holds $160 million in Israel bonds, the highest of any state public pension fund. The fund has approximately half a billion dollars invested in Israel across its portfolio. A life-long Long Islander, Tom was raised in a middle-class, union household and saw the value of hard work and stretching every dollar. In 1972, Tom won his first election and served as a trustee on the Mineola Board of Education, becoming the first 18-year-old in New York State to hold public office. He attended Hofstra University, earning a bachelor’s degree in history and graduated magna cum laude. After graduating, he worked in the telecommunications industry for 10 years and earned a master’s degree from The New School University’s Graduate School of Management and Urban Professions. In 1986, he ran for the New York State Assembly and was elected 11 times to represent the 16th District in northwestern Nassau County.
