JCPRD offers camp programs for everyone! New noon starting time set for first day of camp registrations If you want to be one of the first people to sign up for 2024 summer camps when registrations begin on Monday, Jan. 29, take note that a change for this year is that camp registrations begin at noon on this date rather than the usual earlier hour. After this time, registrations can also be made online at JCPRD.com/camps, or contact registration staff between 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at 913-831-3359. With more than 95 separate 2024 camps for ages ranging from 3 to 19, we’re confident we offer something for everyone. This year’s camp topics include fine and performing arts, nature, science, heritage & history, leadership, sports, and many more! There are nine entirely new camps for 2024, camps at TimberRidge Adventure Center have a new five-day schedule, as well as lots of new topics, ideas, and locations at many of our existing camps. Most full-day camps offer sessions beginning weekly from June 3 to July 29 with other camps starting throughout the summer. Camps are offered throughout the county (see map and addresses on pages 25-27). Remember, the sooner you sign up, the more choices will be available. Don’t wait too long, or your child could miss out on great summer experiences, as our camps are consistently among JCPRD’s most popular offerings of the entire year, and some fill quickly. Financial assistance is available for some camps on a limited basis for qualifying families. For grant information and application materials, call 913-826-3014. Several additional camps will be listed in our May through August program information, which you’ll find at JCPRD.com beginning March 15.

Blair Helseth enjoys getting to know camp kids and their families The fast pace and new adventures which come with each day are the aspects of being a JCPRD camp director Blair Helseth likes best. “My favorite camp to run is one of our outdoor camps,” she said. “I love being outside in nature and encouraging our kiddos to explore nature. I love all the activities, crafts, trips to the pool , and the different fieldtrips we get to do each week with our campers. With outdoor camps we have new families each week and get to know a lot of kids over summer.” In fact, as her supervisor, Children’s Services Specialist Amber Sherwood pointed out, Helseth is a subject matter expert in outdoor education in JCPRD’s Children’s Services Division. “Blair attends environmental education training and brings back information that she can use at her outdoor camp,” Sherwood explained. “She also shares information with other camp directors so that they can provide education activities about nature at their programs.” Helseth is an Out of School Time Director II. She started with JCPRD as a youth soccer referee, has been an OST director for eight years, and has been director at Gardner Elementary School since 2018. She holds a bachelor’s degree in educational psychology from Buena Vista University, and is currently pursuing a masters of science degree in behavioral psychology with an emphasis on psychopharmaceuticals. While camp director assignments for 2024 had not yet been made at press time, Helseth was hopeful she would once again be director at the Summer Escapades Camp at Heritage Park’s Shelter #3, where she has been during summers for the past four years. “I want the kids who come to my camp to create lasting memories and lifelong friendships,” she said. “I want them to learn new skills and talents, along with expanding on ones that they already have.” She explained how running a camp is different for her from her OST role during the school year. “During the school year I run before and after school programs,” Helseth said. “I only have the kids for small amounts of time each day. During summer camp I get the kiddos all day, which allows us to do lots more activities, crafts, and fieldtrips. Our summer camps are unique in that we take the kids on a fieldtrip each week and to the pool twice a week. We also work with outside resources to be able to bring people into our summer camps for on-site visits. Some of the fun things we do are an all-summer camp event, color run, tie dying, minicamp, and so much more!” “Blair does a great job providing a fun and safe environment for her campers each summer,” Sherwood added. “She makes sure that there are plenty of activities to keep them busy and they go home tired. Blair builds a great rapport with the families from year to year.”

Kids can find “A Place to Belong” at JCPRD Summer camps Providing an environment where kids can discover themselves, make new friends, and fit in, is a goal of JCPRD’s summer camp programs. In choosing, “A Place to Belong” as the theme for JCPRD’s 2024 camp guide, camp directors and programmers recognize the need for community and providing spaces where kids can be themselves. Several programmers shared their interpretations of and personal connections to the “A Place to Belong” theme. “Camp is a place where I gained confidence in myself by trying new things, failing at a lot of them, but then learning cool skills I wouldn’t have gotten to experience anywhere else,” said Park Naturalist M.C. Rose. “To my core, camp has been pivotal for my development, and I am thankful I get to give camp experiences to countless children every summer. I think ‘A Place to Belong’ is a perfect theme for camp because camp, for me, is the place where I found I did belong.” “In our performing arts camps, ‘A Place to Belong’ means every stage is a safe space,” added Performing Arts Coordinator Lacey Connell. “Here, everyone can shine in their true colors, no questions asked. Our camps are not just about creativity; they’re about embracing what makes us unique. It’s a place to make lasting memories, have fun, and dance to the rhythm of self-expression!” “Camp is a place where you get to discover yourself,” said Outdoor Adventure Specialist Aryeh Goldman. “Summer camp is one of the few places I am able to feel totally

For locations, see page 25.

like me. There is no better feeling than the freedom to belong to a community as yourself.” “There are summer camps for every kid and every interest,” noted Outdoor Education Manager Andrea Joslin. “We have heard from kids in our Outdoor Education camps that “at school they aren’t very popular, but at camp they are one of the ‘cool kids.’” Summer camps may still be months away, but JCPRD officials already know what they want summer participants to get out of their camp experiences. Wellness Coordinator Alison Smith said she looks forward to seeing campers “having fun, learning something new, making new friends, building confidence, and gaining a sense of belonging.” “I’ve made some of my greatest, life-long, friendships at summer camp,” Goldman added. “I want campers to make similar friendships! The day camp ends, we’re sad that it’s over too! But we are also already thinking about and are excited for next year. We cannot wait to see you this summer!” “With the amount of technology children and adults have less than a foot from their faces every day… I hope kids see that there is life outside of sitting and staring at a screen,” Rose said. “There are friendships to be made, puddles to get muddy in, and four-square ball games to be played!”

Kelci Lucas makes sure kids have a say in camp activities Kelci Lucas believes kids have better camp experiences when they get a lot of input into the activities they get to participate in. “What I like most about being in charge of summer camps is getting input from the kids on what they want out of their summer and being able to use those ideas to make a great summer for the kids,” she said. “I have noticed that this change really helps create a great relationship with the kids and their families, and makes for a very fun summer for the kids!” “Kelci is very organized and likes to get the kids input when planning activities,” added Lucas’ supervisor, Children’s Services Specialist Amber Sherwood. “She makes sure that she hires staff who love what they do and provide a fun and memorable summer for the campers.” Lucas, who holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology, has been with JCPRD’s Out of School Time programs for seven years. Since fall 2021, she has been OST director at Mill Creek Elementary School. For the past three summers, she has been the director at the Sumer Escapades Camp at Shawnee Mission Park Shelter #10, but this summer she expects to be at the Summer Escapades Camp at SMP Shelter #8. The biggest difference between her role at camps and her OST role during the year is in the kinds of activities the kids can do, Lucas said. “Sometimes it is hard doing certain projects in the school year with the limited time, but in the summer, you have the whole day to work on things, or teach the kids new skills,” she said. “I think that the way that we run our camps with keeping the kids busy with new activities, taking them on fieldtrips, and just engaging with them, makes our camps great! We also put on events where we bring the camps together and the kids enjoy those times so much and being able to see school-year friends that go to different camps.” It seems obvious that Lucas enjoys summer camps as much as her young participants do. “I love being able to experience new things so working at a summer camp, there is always something new that we do or learn,” she said. “I really think that we have the best jobs with our camps. It is so fun to be able to do activities with the kids, seeing the joy that something brings them, and the appreciation from parents that their kids are having such a great time at camp. When everyone goes home tired from the day you know that it was a great day at camp!” So what does Lucas want participants to get out of her camp? “The biggest thing that I want the kids to get out of camp is the friendships that they make with the kids and the staff,” she said. “It is so fun to see the kids summer after summer listing off kids or staff they want to see at camp because they haven’t seen them in a year, or when we run into them at events because they have aged out of our camp.” See page 19 for Summer Escapades Camp details.
