Constructing Environments – Studio Journal week 3 What we did: in this week’s studio we did some site visits in the university and looked at the different aspects of the each building, like the their potential construction constrains, if they linked to any other buildings, the construction type, structural system and materials.
Site 1- East precinct student centre
Potential construction constrains: A potential construction constrain in this building was the space between the buildings.
Links to other buildings: There is a link on both sides of the construction to two other buildings
Construction type: There are two main types of construction types in this building. There is steel and glass and the roof appeared to be a cantilever with both sides bolted to the connected buildings, although we were not sure as we didn’t have the building plan at the time.
Structural Systems: The main structural system in the building is a steel frame structural system
Materials: The main materials for this building are: -
Glass Wood Steel
Site 2 – MSLE Building
Potential construction constrains: A potential construction constrain in this building was the space between the buildings.
Links to other buildings: Similar to the previous site this building there was also a link on both sides of the structure to two other buildings
Construction type: The main construction types for this building was a cantilever in the inside of the building for the stairs to the second floor
Structural Systems: The main structural systems in this building are mass construction on the side walls and a steel frame on the roof and inside the structure
Materials: The main materials which I was able to see on the structure of the building were: -
Wood in the inside for stairs Steel frame Glass windows Concrete walls
Site 3 – Queens College Extension
Potential construction constrains: There were no potential constrains which I was able to observe on the this site on the day
Links to other buildings: There is a link between the old and the new building where the new building is the one being analysed
Construction type: There are four main types of construction, steel, concrete, glass and timber
Structural Systems: There are four main types of structural systems being applied in this building. There is a steel, timer and glass frame and there is also mass construction
Materials: The main materials in this construction are: -
Steel Two different types of glass Timber Marble Concrete
Site 4 – Ormond Theology Reception
Potential construction constrains: There were no potential constrains which I was able to observe on the this site on the day
Links to other buildings: There is a link between the old and the new buildings
Construction type: The main construction types were a cantilever, steel and concrete
Structural Systems: The two main structural systems in this building were steel frame and mass construction
Materials: The materials used in this building are: -
Glass Steel Concrete
