ARCHIVIST’S LOG: CHARTING THE

COLLEGE’S HISTORY

SpecialCollectionsLibrarianandCollegeArchivist

The History of the Miriam and Hugh Nunnally Health and Sciences Building””

Hello everyone! My name is Mylynda Gill, and I serve as the Special Collections Librarian and College Archivist for the Clara Wood Gould Memorial Library at the College of Coastal Georgia.

Duetoourrecentgroundbreakingceremonyoncampus, thismonth’seditionof“Archivist’sLog:Chartingthe College'sHistory” Iwantedtohighlightthehistoryofthe MiriamandHughNunnallyHealthandSciencesBuilding, nowreferredtoasNunnallyHall.

WhenourinstitutionbecametheCollegeofCoastal Georgiain2008andstartedofferingbaccalaureate programs,enrollmentincreasedandtherewasaneed formoreacademicspacesoncampus.Thelast academicbuildingtobebuiltontheBrunswickcampus wasin1984,morethan30yearsprior.Therefore,anew HealthandSciencesBuildingwasplannedtohelp accommodatethegrowingclassnumbers.The groundbreakingceremonytookplaceonAugust5, 2009,andconstructionbeganinDecember2009.The constructionconcludedoneyearlater,inDecember 2010.Thebuildingprovidesmorethan45,000square feetofspace,whichconsistsofclassrooms,variouslabs, andanauditoriumthatcanaccommodate125people. Totalconstructioncostswereapproximately$11.8 million,whiletotalprojectcostswereapproximately $15.8million.Thefirstclassesheldinthebuildingtook placeonJanuary10,2011.Justoveraweeklater,the dedicationceremonyforthenewHealthandSciences BuildingoccurredonJanuary21,2011.

HughP.NunnallyJr.hadbeeninspiredtodonateone milliondollarsinmemoryofhislatewifeMiriam Nunnallyafterhemetthreenurseswhohadgraduated fromourinstitution.Hewantedtoexpandandaidthe nursingprogramattheCollegeofCoastalGeorgiaand hisdonationwenttowardscapitalprojects,

infrastructure,andprogrammingbeneficialtonursing students.Therefore,acouplemonthslater,onMarch24, 2011,anotherdedicationceremonywasheld.However, thistimeitwasfortheMiriamandHughNunnallyCenter forNursingEducationhousedwithintheHealthand Sciencesbuilding.

Evenafterhisinitialdonation,Mr.Nunnallycontinuedto providefurtherinvestmentstotheCollege.TheBoardof theRegentsformallyapprovedthenamingoftheHealth andSciencesBuildingtotheMiriamandHughNunnally HealthandSciencesBuildingonMarch14,2012.The dedicationceremonyforthisnamechangeoccurredon April20,2012.

Adecadepassedanditbecamenoticeablethattheonce state-of-the-artlabsandspaceswerenowbecoming outdated.WantingtoensurethatCoastalGeorgiakept providingthebesteducationpossibletoitshealthcarebasedstudents,theGeorgiaStateLegislatureapproved $16millionforacapitolprojecttoexpandtheHughand MiriamNunnallyHealthandSciencesBuildingin2023.

Thisexpansionwillallowtheretobeninesimulation roomsinsteadofone,anursingskillslabwithabedcount increasefrom15to40,afewgroupstudyrooms,a studentlounge,andmoreofficespacesforthefacultyand staffwithinthenursingprogram.Itwillalsoallowthe nursingprogramandtheradiologyprogramtoacceptand trainmorestudents,whichinturnwillprovidemore healthcareworkerstoourlocalcommunityandtheentire stateofGeorgia.Thegroundbreakingceremonyforthis expansiontookplaceonJune10,2025.

ThousandsofCoastalGeorgiastudentshavenowpassed throughthehallwaysandroomsoftheHughandMiriam NunnallyHealthandSciencesBuildingsinceitsdoors openedandclassesbeganwithinitswalls.

Manyofthemarenowalumswhoareservingtheir communitieswiththeknowledgeandskillstheygained whileattheCollegeofCoastalGeorgia.

OnethingIhavelearntaboutworkinginthecollege archivesisthatthearchitectureandspacesofthe Brunswickcampusareconstantlychanging,butthe motivationisalwaystoimprovetheeducation,experience andthelivesofthosewithinourcommunity.

Untilnextmonth,HailtheSail,Mariners!
