Hola, ciao, hi!
I am JĂşlia Claveria since 1995, currently studying at NABA in exchange. I come from Barcelona where I take a double degree in Design and Engineering in Industrial Design at Elisava. I have also been working there as an intern in the Science and Technology laboratory. I have been living in a variety of eclectic environments, such as a familial household with my 93 year-old grandmother. To be able to experience the elder generation in such an intimate proximity has influenced my work ethic and ideas. In contrast of this, I have lived in the common shared student flat dealing with coexistence responsabilities. Due to these experiences I have become a nomadic creative seeking my place in the design world.
So here I am.

Nolab is a meal experience which makes people meet for sharing and eating through senses and emotions. Focusing on ways of making eating a much richer experience, Nolab consists of three different tools for a dinner. However, nolab is much more than a set of cutlery; it explores the world of liquids and brings them further, as the main characters of a meal. Nolab is based on the concept of ancestral tribes; it goes back to the origins when they met around the fire, as an act of sharing among a collective and having a collavorative cooking.

Conceptual side

This project is focused on emotions and feelings that diner experience when eating. This experience is not complete if it is not shared with other people. Therefore, sharing and collavorative concepts will be the unifying elements of the proposal that will bring all together. If we go back to the origins when cooking, prehistoric men and women sat around the fire to eat food. The diners of this project will sit around the table with a central cooking tool, similar to the prehistoric fire. This way the experience of cooking and eating is shared among all of them. User finds different types of food that can be free combined. This way, everyone is able to make different combinations and share them with the ones in the table. Textures, temperatures, colours and flavours that set a new way of eating. It is about making eating a much richer experience.

Tablecloth
The tablecloth uses bare conductive ink technology, which let electronics be flexible. The circuit pattern is also related to Nolab’s graphic image.
Bowl
The base of the bowl heats the liquids above. The user decides whether to have them hot or not. /15
Pipette
It works as a spoon and lets user combine liquids with different properties.

Menus & Rations Nolab’s experience is based on combining liquids with different textures, temperatures, flavours and smellings. Nolab designs four menus which fit each other in a shocking but pleasant way. The experience is thought to be for four diners. It is not a dinner understood as such, but ruther a menu degustation, a collective meal to share with others.

Nolab’s communication is based on ancestral primitive tribes. A tribe is a group well-knited and all its members belong to a collective; they all have its origin like a family. A unifide group of people that meet and share their belongings, just like the users of Nolab.

Letter opener, an introduction to formal language. Proportions, ergonomy and usability. A letter opener? Why would someone want one nowadays? Well, maybe he is chained to the 20th Century. Maybe he loves the physicallity of cutting opening a letter or, maybe he is studying design and it turns out that designing a letter opener is a good introduction to formal language. Composed of only straight edges and faceted faces, the material and the process (aluminum sheet folding) talk for themselves, successfully dealing with the tricky part of the project: emulating the language of a knife without making the letter opener look dangerours.

ABC learning as a game. Could children learn the alphabet in an autonomous way? Roda’m (“Roll me” in english) is a new way of understanding the apprenticechip of children. It is based on Montesori’s methodology and consists of different stakable modules, distributed in levels of difficulty, depending on the country’s alphabet language. Roda’m has been design with the catalan alphabet, easily extrapolable to spanish and latin languages or latin characters.

We had no briefing, just the following keywords: alphabet synesthesia memory children Roda’m is the result of a deep immersion in these four concepts. The final product is about associating colours with vowels, while building short series and creating monosyllable words. It is thought to be a game to learn the alphabet in a nice way, based on Montessori’s ideology: “The child is the one who is naturally eager for knowledge and capable of initiating learning in a supportive, thoughtfully prepared learning environment. It values the whole child (physical, social, emotional and cognitive)”

How it works Letters
No alphabet anymore! Vowels and consonants are divided by stablishing synesthetic relations, which are supposed to be really helpful in the learning process: each vowel has a color which lets children remember them easily. Consonants are in B&W to make contrast.
Levels
Roda’m consists of various pentagonal modules, with five letters each. There are groups of modules organized in levels of difficulty, each of which joins letters with similar phonetics.

The first group of letters are vowels, and the followings are consonants ordered by levels of difficulty. Roda’m has been designed for the catalan alphabet, so the levels depend on the usage of letters in catalan:

Rethinking fries. TATA is a packaging for seasonal fried potatos. This product aims to approach people to the potato itself, showing some of its variants. Based on the concept of the four seasons, we want to reflect each one with a type of potato and a kind of sauce that accompanies it. Therefore, it was created a palette of colors for the seasons and teamed a potato, a sauce, a shape and a color for each season. Lastly, the seasons were unified all creating what would be the final packaging of TATA.

This project was as free as creating something related with fries. We had no briefing; just the words: fried potato After a deep research into the world of fries, it was easy to think of a wide range of design possibilities. Finally, we decided to design the packaging of fries according to the season kind of potato each one was, thinking in a way to promote seasonal consumption and local production. TATA’s project is not just a packaging of potatoes; it is more than that. We have designed a new way to interact with them, creating the ritual to follow when tasting each season type.

Hug: your third skin. Spaces that cuddle you isolating from the city, letting you experience the Hygge. “Hygge� is a Danish word that refers to being happy enough to be at ease with oneself, the pleasure of the solitude moments. They do not need to be enthusiast excitement moments, just peaceful, calm and relaxed. The project is about creating a space which works as a third skin for the user to be seated, on foot or lying. The structure has to be self-supporting and suitable for outdoor. Its volume cannot exceed 8 m3. That was all the briefing stablished.

Hygge means sitting by the fire on a cold night, wearing a woolly jumper, eating homemade cinnamon pastries, watching TV under a duvet, tea served in a china set. It is a kind of happiness deeper than usual joy. It has no direct equivalent to other languages, but is usually translated as cosiness. The shell space, the base of this project, aims to be the materialization of this hygee in a spatial athmosphere, a place to be isolated from the city chaos we are all immersed. As a conceptual reference, the shell space gets the inspiration from the hug, the final name of the project, an action which is comforting when difficult times.

Shades of light. Into the wild of flora’s jungle in the middle of your home. OM_UM takes its name from “ombres de llum” (light shadows in english), which is the consecuence of a deep immersion into light textures and movement. It consists of a cement base from where four steams grow up. At the end of them, a light projects calming shadows. People can lay on big pillows and disconnect from the sorroundings with the envolving atmosphere.

The user experience a bewilderment calm when getting immersed in the envolging atmosphere of OM_UM. The experience is suposed to make people remain lost in the middle of a jungle, sorrounded by nature, or interacting with tribal people that do not speak the same language. Besides, the shadows move slightly so they create an involving atmosphere. The materials used for the prototype where cement for the base, thin rounded aluminum bars (with electronics inside) ending in LED lights, and some natural fibers patterned to create this unic and chilling shadows.
