in the beginning
The idea of a Junior Chamber germinated back in 1959. The “3 Musketeers” who closely associated with the formation of the first chapter in Jesselton (now known as Kota Kinabalu) are Mr. Fauzi PateL, John Hii and Michael Chen. Fauzi Patel was on a study tour to Australia, recalled being hosted by Nombour Junior Chamber, Queensland. John Hii, manager of MeSser Jardine Waugh Co. was on a training course in London. He was registered by his colleagues to attend the 17th JCI World Congress in Paris. He was impressed with the friendliness, warmth and charm. Mr Michael Chen, Manager of Cathay Cinema then, was contacted by both Fauzi & John and started recruiting members. It was only in late 1961 when Mr Lee Choon Fatt appeared that there was some momentum in recruitment. Together with another 3 members (Robert De Souza, John Su and George Chin) a meeting was held in January 1962. On July 1962, the chapter was formed and the 1st Organisation meeting was held at Jesselton Recreation Club. 17 members were present, Fauzi Patel, John Hii, Michael Chen, Lee Choon Fatt, Robert De Souza, John Su, Teo Geok Sang, Yuen Peng Cheng, Mak Sin Loong, Ho Fook Kee, Lim Kim Jee, Lim Beng Aun, John Foo, Spencer Lim, Peter Soong and Liew Yun Choi. The Jesselton Junior Chamber was fored by the following protem officers; Acting Chairman – John Hii VP (External) – George Chin VP (Internal) – Lee Choon Fatt Secretary – Fauzi Patel Treasurer – Michael Chen Directors – Teo Geok Seng, Ho Fook Kee, Yuen Peng Cheng, Mak Sin Loong

It is indeed an accomplishment when one is recognised nised as the leaders of a prestigious association such h as Junior Chamber International. Like any associations, leadership is important and d the board of directors have the utmost important task sk at hand to ensure that the association and its members bers are well taken care of. For JCI KK, it goes further; their mission is to provide development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change e and this change translates within the society at large. As our creed suggests, “service to humanity is the best work of life”. We all have rights and responsibilities, as well ll as shared goals. Through active citizenship, we enactt our sense of social responsibility to work towards these hese goals and benefit communities worldwide. The Presidential theme for JCI KK this year: “Be e the Change: Courage to Change, Courage to be the Change” suggests that the time has come for changes nges to be made to move forward to improve the societyy and our nation, to bring peace and harmony thus creating ing a better future for the future generations to come. Once again I take this opportunity to thank our Guestt of Honour, Past Presidents, Guest, Members a and nd members of the Press for your support.

2016 proposed projects THE ART OF NATION BUILDING PROGRAMME ( Co-organized with Jabatan Pendidikan Sabah, Society Empowerment & Economic Development of Sabah (SEEDS) and Federation of Chinese Women of Sabah (FCWS). A. INTRODUCTION Patriotism and one’s love for their country is not just about flying the national flag once a year. This physical and traditional action may no longer be effective amongst our younger generation when it comes to nurturing and inculcating love and loyalty to their home country. Instead, alternative innovative approaches are required to engage the young nowadays to sow in them this ‘patriotic seed’. Therefore, this programme is aimed at re-introducing the young to the country’s golden olden times and awakening their sense of belonging towards their home country by re-enacting and expressing the past pride in their artwork. Through this expression of art, history can then become a practical reference for creating a better future in our country B. OBJECTIVE Project Objective • To cultivate a sense of nationhood and belonging through art • To encourage patriotism and instill loyalty into the hearts of young people by creating awareness about national values through the expression of art • To create awareness to the diverse race, ethnicity and cultures of our society especially in our youth • To further create an understanding of this diversity and thereby acceptance and respect for each other Chapter Objective • To initiate closer working relationships and interdependence between JCI, Education Ministry and other non-governmental organizations. • To develop JCI KK members to be confident in organizing project • To attract new members. • To learn and share with other non-governmental organizations. • To publicly JCI to future youth of Malaysia
2016 THE OUTSTANDING YOUNG PERSON OF SABAH (TOYPS) A. INTRODUCTION The project has been successfully implemented. TOYM Award 2008 submission for 5 honourees was submitted. This project has also been successfully implemented 2009 TOYPS and 2011 TOYPS. We have attempted to revive this project back in year 2014 with no success. Hence, we now look forward to revive 2016 TOYPS as a Flagship project for JCI Kota Kinabalu. B. OBJECTIVE Project Objective • To accord recognition to young Sabahan and Malaysian Individuals based in Sabah between the ages of 18 and 40, whose dedication to their profession
•
•
or life undertakings has resulted in exceptional achievement, in the form of significant contributions to the progress or welfare of the community at large and the advancement of their respective field of endeavor. To create public awareness and give proper recognition to the outstanding achievement of the honorees, thereby serving as inspirational examples and incentives to young Malaysian to forge ahead to greater heights of achievements in the spirit of selfless dedication for the further development of the community. To promote variety of industry in Sabah and hence recognize the roles and contribution towards state and National development growth.
Chapter Objective • To initiate closer working relationships and interdependence between JCI, Chamber of Commerce, the Government, Corporations and the organizations. • To develop JCI KK members to be confident in organizing project of this size • To attract new members. • To make JCI KK a well-recognized youth development organization
WALK FOR DIABETES A. INTRODUCTION In Malaysia, childhood obesity rates also are climbing, from less than 10% a decade ago to nearly 14% in 2008, according to the most recent figures, saddling health systems with a new generation of diabetes, hypertension and other obesity-related illnesses Already, some 2.6 million adults have diabetes, a figure authorities expect to spike to 4.5 million in 2020. Malaysia has a population of around 29 million. The prevalence of diabetes in Sabah has increased from 4.9% in 2006 to 9% in 2011. In Malaysia, ONE in FIVE Malaysians are diabetic. B. OBJECTIVE Project Objective • To provide individuals touched by diabetes the opportunity to unite with others with a similar passion, and to raise critical funds for research focused on curing, treating and better preventing diabetes. • To create public awareness regarding diabetes. • To promote healthy lifestyle in Sabah • To promote Sabah’s world class medical tourism Chapter Objective • To initiate closer working relationships and interdependence between JCI, Kota Kinabalu Council, the Government, Corporations and the organizations. • To develop JCI KK members to be confident in organizing project of this size. • To attract new members. • To make JCI KK a well-recognized youth development organization.
