Dear readers,

As the 2024 JCI City Plus President, it gives me great pleasure to write to you and share my message with you in our first newsletter of the year.

As Brian Tracy has rightly said, Successful people are simply those with successful habits, so as active citizens, ask yourself what legacy you will leave behind.

First and foremost, I would like to thank all City Plus Members who encourage us to grow into future leaders and offer their help and advice to enhance our JCI way of doing things.

Our first quarter has been thrilling as we managed to successfully host the two National Projects: Debate Championship and Public Speaking Competition.

For our Individual and International Project, We have collaborated with JCI Akure, JCE Grand Sud, JCI Antananarivo, JCI Moroni, JCI Marine Line, JCI Srijan, JCI Kolkata for a series of leadership training

Four faces – business rise and mental health projects are in pipeline for the second quarter.

However, we are not stopping here, we are planning more team building for the next quarter.

Last but not least, I wish to extend my sincere gratitude to members, senators and aspiring members who are continuously supporting and contributing to the betterment of the organization.

I hope this message finds you all in good spirits and health. As we transition into the second quarter of 2024, I am excited to share some updates and highlights from our recent events.

Communication Training with Board Members: JCI City Plus Board members had the opportunity to enhance their communication skills through a specialized training session conducted by JCI City Plus. Debate Training: JCI City Plus organized a thought-provoking debate training session, which provided valuable insights and practice for our members.

JCI Mauritius Debate Championship: The highly anticipated JCI Mauritius Debate Championship, organized by JCI City Plus, took place recently. The event showcased the exceptional debating skills of our members and was a true testament to their hard work and dedication.

Public Speaking Training: Members had the chance to improve their public speaking skills through a training session organized by JCI City Plus.5.0 Leadership Training (Feb, March): JCI City Plus conducted a leadership training session, focusing on the principles of 5.0 leadership, in February and March. The training aimed to empower our members to become effective leaders in their respective fields.

Public Speaking Championship: The Public Speaking Championship, organized by JCI City Plus, was held on Saturday, 13th April. The event was a resounding success, showcasing the talent and dedication of our members in public speaking.

I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to JCI City Plus for their exceptional efforts in organizing these events . Your dedication and hard work have not gone unnoticed, and I am confident that these events have contributed significantly to the personal and professional development of our members.

I am very often asked to share my experience as JCI member and through this article, I want members and new members to find hope and choose the path that they want to take in JCI to boost their JCI career.

As JCI members we learn to Be Better through our experiences and through our interactions

with others we learn to appreciate each other’s differences and accept that we all evolve differently. There will always be different challenges but how you bounce back define your character and how resilient you are as a person.

And JCI will give you different opportunities : be it in entrepreneurship, training, leadership roles at local, national or international levels , directing projects and many others, it will always be up to you to choose the path that you are more passionate about.

My journey in JCI started back in 2009 and since then, I took the different opportunities that JCI gave me :

I attended more than ten international events (World Congress, Africa and Middle East Conference, European Conference, National Convention, National Congress…) which have been amazing experiences. My journey in JCI has been very much focused on empowering members through trainings.

Through my 15 years of experience this year, I can say that JCI gave me different opportunitiesbut one that I enjoyed very much is delivering trainings for different Local Organisations in Mauritius, for JCI Nepal, JCI Perpignan, JCI Reunion, JCI Vannes and last year for JCI Switzerland.

This year as the 2024 JCI Mauritius Senate Chairperson, my role is to support JCI Mauritius, empower members from the different Local Organisations and be present for the Senators.

I hope that this article can motivate members to travel, deliver trainings and take opportunities that come their way !

Volunteering in JCI City Plus has broadened my perspectives and impacted on the way I pursue my objectives and make decisions. Not only have I gained into leadership skills, I have had the chance to experiment it. While increasing my ability to adapt to different behavioural expectations and my aptitude to handle sensitive situations, I learned to motivate people, create meaningful trainings and cope up with the pressure.

Indeed, it is a known fact that people become more engaged when they feel empowered and supported in their professional growth which further leads to higher levels of productivity, improved job satisfaction, and positive work culture.

And what makes our (JCI) mission meaningful to them?

The JCI City Plus team's emphasis on leadership development, social events, community service, and business networking, had a beneficial effect on me when I joined.

I now have the necessary information, confidence, and skills from the training programs, which help me create objectives and adjust to different circumstances.

Social gatherings help teams bond, and volunteering in the community has made me more aware of larger societal challenges.

I am Gaurav, a Future Fintech Champion and accounting and finance student. I joined JCI to develop my skills, personality, and explore new perspectives. Through participation in competitions and projects, such as Yes to Sustainability Project and Zenfan Lespwar project, I honed communication skills, contributed to meaningful initiatives, and engaged with future leaders. Winning the 2023 JCI National Public Speaking Championship was a highlight of my journey. Recently, as team captain, being victorious in the JCI National Debate competition, I further developed critical thinking, listening, and leadership skills. Winner debate Championship 2024 Final Year Finance and Banking Student at Curtin University

When asked why JCI, I said: "Leadership". With JCI, I embarked on a journey of personal and community development. Each step taken towards turning community projects into fruition was a pathway toward project management and leadership.

I got the opportunity to represent my local chapter at the 2024 National Debate Championship where I emerged as the Best Speaker. I even got the opportunity to participate in the National Public Speaking Championship which provided us, the youth, with a platform to step into the shoes of world leaders and to share our perspectives on burning conundrums.

JCI is thriving in all realms. I look forward to contribute to the greatness ahead.

I have always strived going even beyond the best of my ability for JCI City Plus to shine. It's with great Pride that I received the Best 100% efficiency award at the 2023 JCI Day. It shows the hard work, dedication and efforts put in by the entire team! I am sure it will not stop here and we will achieve more.

SECOND MEMBERS’ MEETING

2024 Local President Aklesh Seebooa thanked everyone for their presence despite being a week day and delivered important updates to their members. Local Treasurer Sabrina Rasolonjatovo pursued with more highlights on treasury status while LVP Skills and Development Kamini Ramjeet shared information on upcoming 5.0 Leadership Training and future Mental health projects.

Members had the opportunity to equally experience the fun side of JCI with a ‘James Bond’ alike team building. Being the only air crash survivors, members had to find clues to decipher the dead pilot’s phone password to be able to send a rescue message. The success of the mission rested on Teamwork

In collaboration with esteemed chapters worldwide, including JCE Grand Sud de La Réunion, JCI Moroni, JCI AKURE, JCI Kolkata, JCI Marine Lines, JCI Jaipur Srijan, and JCI Antananarivo, we embarked on a transformative journey of discovery on the 5 Savoir under the guidance of our trainer, Mr. Manish Bundhun.

He explained how an individual should avoid the devils’ cocktail of stress and fear which fogs the brain and learn to cultivate the angels’ cocktail of Oxytocin and Dopamine which creates more love, focus and Happiness. In order to attain one ’ s best performance in life as a leader, one should learn Mastery of the Self.

At the 2024 JCI Mauritius Senate Meeting on March 12, 2024, local and national boards convened for a day of insightful exchanges led by Senate Chairperson Ashweena Mewa, alongside several esteemed Senators. The event, primarily focused on sharing experiences, featured heartfelt celebrations commemorating Mauritius' 56th Independence Anniversary. Nostalgia filled the air as attendees sang the national anthem, evoking fond memories of past projects conducted. Amidst reflections on the nation's journey, attendees embraced the spirit of unity and camaraderie. The meeting served as a testament to JCI's mission to share experiences, connect communities, and celebrate milestones together.

The training by Mr. Nanda Armoogum was an insightful one. I specifically remember his comments on how sustainable leadership isn't a one-size-fits-all approach. My takeaway is that it requires creativity and innovation to develop context-specific solutions that address unique challenges. It was impactful that he shared a few examples of leaders, their firms and their leadership strategy. Looking forward to attending more similar trainings by JCI City Plus.

At this year ' s Annual General Meeting (AGM), led by Local President Aklesh Seebooa and local Secretary Patsy, members had the opportunity to recognize the organization's achievements, inquire about its strategy and future plans, and voice any concerns. The AGM proceeded smoothly, with members approving the audited Financial Statements. As the project director of the 2024 Mauritius Public Speaking Championship, I have coordinated a dedicated organising team while maintaining strong communication with partners, participants, Jury members, and guests. Through this experience, I have learned a great deal about project management, delegation, conflict resolution, and bringing diverse stakeholders together towards a common goal. At the same time, the opportunity to work closely with committed individuals, and to witness the positive impact and outcomes of the championship, have been incredibly rewarding. Overall, receiving enthusiastic feedback and seeing the success of the project have been a source of fulfillment.

2024 JCI Mauritius Induction Program

JCI Quatre-Bornes and JCI City Plus hosted an online induction session on March 24, 2024, led by Senator Nousrina Peerbux and assisted by Past President Curepipe Hanusha Cheddy. Divided into two parts, 'JCI Discover' and 'JCI Explore,' the session welcomed new members, offering insight into JCI's missions, values, and growth opportunities. Aspiring members gained understanding of JCI's structure, system, and ethos, exploring avenues for personal and professional development.
