Dear JCI City Plus Members,

I am very often asked to share my experience as JCI member and through this article, I want members and new members to find hope and choose the path that they want to take in JCI to boost their JCI career.

As JCI members we learn to Be Better through our experiences and through our interactions

with others we learn to appreciate each other’s differences and accept that we all evolve differently. There will always be different challenges but how you bounce back define your character and how resilient you are as a person.

And JCI will give you different opportunities : be it in entrepreneurship, training, leadership roles at local, national or international levels , directing projects and many others, it will always be up to you to choose the path that you are more passionate about.

My journey in JCI started back in 2009 and since then, I took the different opportunities that JCI gave me :

Senate Chairperson : 2023/2024

Senate Vice President : 2022

Senate Secretary : 2020 / 2021

Recruitment Director : 2019

Africa and Middle East Development Councillor : 2018

National Training Institute Director : 2017

National Vice President : 2015

Local President of JCI City Plus : 2013

I attended more than ten international events (World Congress, Africa and Middle East Conference, European Conference, National Convention, National Congress…) which have been amazing experiences. My journey in JCI has been very much focused on empowering members through trainings.

Through my 15 years of experience this year, I can say that JCI gave me different opportunitiesbut one that I enjoyed very much is delivering trainings for different Local Organisations in Mauritius, for JCI Nepal, JCI Perpignan, JCI Reunion, JCI Vannes and last year for JCI Switzerland.

This year as the 2024 JCI Mauritius Senate Chairperson, my role is to support JCI Mauritius, empower members from the different Local Organisations and be present for the Senators.

I hope that this article can motivate members to travel, deliver trainings and take opportunities that come their way !

Local President Message

Dear Readers,

You are the architect of your own success. It is with great pleasure that I share my message as your Local President for the third quarter of 2024. This quarter has been nothing short of remarkable, as we successfully organized various impactful initiatives. Our Autism Awareness Campaign, held in collaboration with Be A Roshan and Autisme Maurice, raised significant awareness and support for individuals on the autism spectrum. We are proud to have made a difference in the lives of many.

In addition, our Residential Training provided a platform for members and aspiring leaders to sharpen their skills and knowledge. We continue to grow stronger as a community, learning from each other and striving for excellence. One of the standout achievements this quarter was our Fundraising Event, which saw the highest collection of funds in our local chapter’s history. This achievement was made possible through the dedication and teamwork of our members, and it reaffirms our collective strength and potential.

Lastly, our Leadership Training Series remains an ongoing effort to develop essential leadership skills, ensuring that we remain equipped to tackle future challenges and seize new opportunities.

As always, I am deeply grateful to our Board Members, Members, Senators, and Aspiring Members for their unwavering support and commitment to our cause. Together, we continue to rise and shine.

Kind regards,

National President Message

Dear JCI City Plus family,

As we reflect on the third quarter of 2024, I am filled with pride over the incredible work that has been done by this chapter. This year, JCI City Plus celebrated its 17th anniversary, a milestone that reflects the unwavering dedication and commitment of its members over the years. It’s inspiring to see how the City Plus family continues to grow and contribute meaningfully to the JCI mission.

In July, JCI City Plus took an important step in raising awareness about autism with an impactful session held at La City Trianon. This initiative brought muchneeded attention to an issue that affects so many, resonating deeply with the community. Shortly after, during the highly anticipated visit of World President Kaveen Kumaravel, JCI City Plus welcomed new aspiring members into the JCI family with a memorable swearing-in ceremony during the TOYP award night, further strengthening your organization.

The World President's visit also marked the conclusion of an enriching workshop on the entrepreneurial mindset, led by Georgina Ragaven. Participants had the honor of receiving their awards directly from President Kaveen, making the event even more special and inspiring for everyone involved.

In addition to these remarkable events, JCI City Plus has been building a strong social media presence, amplifying its message and engaging with the public like never before. A highlight of this quarter was the highly successful fundraising concert at Le Suffren, where JCI City Plus revived the spirit of the 80s music, drawing hundreds of spectators. It was a night of music, nostalgia, and community, helping raise important funds to support their initiatives.

I am deeply grateful for the energy and passion that JCI City Plus continues to bring to our organization. Together, we continue to create lasting impact and pave the way for an even brighter future.

AUTISM AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

Under the leadership of Project Director Kamini Ramjeet, the event provided valuable insights into autism and how holistic therapies can enhance the quality of life for both children and adults. Participants learned about the importance of early autism screening, which plays a crucial role in easing the challenges of their adult lives.

We are grateful to everyone who joined us in raising awareness and promoting understanding.

JCI City Plus can play a vital role by connecting youth with mentorship, creating platforms for dialogue and encouraging entrepreneurial thinking, while promoting social values. But it depends on how JCI can adapt its programs to local contexts, providing relevant and sustainable opportunities. The importance of raising mental awareness and specially autism, is essential to fostering a more inclusive and understanding society. Autism is often misunderstood leading to stigma and discrimination. Raising awareness helps break down these barriers. You can make a difference by improving access to resources and services thereby promoting inclusion and acceptance. Focusing on autism can significantly impact the quality of life for individuals and families affected. The campaign was a successful start and we are glad of this collaboration

"We are immensely grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with JCI City Plus and Autism Maurice in organizing the recent Open Day dedicated to raising awareness about autism. This event was not only a platform for education but also of inclusivity and understanding.

JCI CITY PLUS’s commitment to empowering youth shone through in the planning and execution of the day, inspiring people to engage with the community and advocate for those on the autism spectrum. This collaboration brought a sense of unity and purpose, bringing together many stakeholders from different field to share knowledge and experiences. The positive feedback from attendees has been overwhelming, highlighting the importance of such initiatives in breaking down barriers and promoting acceptance and healing. We look forward to continuing this partnership with JCI City Plus and Autism Maurice to create more impactful events in the future. Together, we can build a more inclusive society for everyone.

"Raising mental health awareness, particularly regarding autism, is crucial for building an understanding and acceptance, dispelling myths, and reducing stigma. It promotes early intervention by educating families and educators about the signs of autism, leading to better outcomes through timely support. Such awareness provides vital resources for families, encourages inclusive practices in communities, and advocates for necessary funding and services. Additionally, it addresses the mental health challenges often associated with autism, empowers individuals to advocate for themselves, and fosters community engagement. Overall, these efforts contribute to a more informed, compassionate, and supportive society for individuals with autism and their families.

Be A Roshan can collaborate with JCI to support individuals with autism through various initiatives that incorporate energy therapy, yoga, and meditation. One approach is to organize workshops where Be A Roshan members can provide healing sessions to empower and offer supportive sessions to individuals with autism.

Additionally, providing Reiki sessions for families can help reduce stress and promote relaxation for both parents and children. Specialized yoga and meditation classes tailored for individuals with autism can focus on sensory integration and emotional regulation, creating a more grounded and connected experience. And this would be for those who are 18+.

Awareness campaigns highlighting the benefits of these therapies can educate the public, while integration programs and community support groups can foster social skills and provide a safe space for families to share their experiences.

Reiki offers several benefits for individuals with autism, including improved emotional regulation, sensory integration, and enhanced focus. The gentle touch of Reiki helps manage anxiety and emotional outbursts, creating a sense of calm and comfort. Regular sessions can also reduce stress levels for both individuals and their families, leading to a more harmonious home environment.

To further promote integration into society, Be A Roshan and JCI City Plus can host inclusive community events that encourage interaction and acceptance, work with schools like Autism Maurice to incorporate mindfulness practices, and conduct public demonstrations to raise awareness. Together, these initiatives can create a more inclusive society that supports individuals with autism in their journey toward acceptance and integration.

It was an honor for me to facilitate this online session on “Resilience” as part of JCI City Plus initiative of Leadership Series.

In our world of Neuro-Semantics we consider “Resilience” as a crucial skill for Leaders, the more so after the experience we all had with Covid. As leaders, we are bound to face set-backs and how we navigate the aftermath of a set-back says a lot about our character and about our capacity to build up success.

Congratulations on such initiatives !

DOCTOR, PILOT & CEO

DOC2US - MALAYSIA

I am privileged to have facilitated this session with JCI CITY PLUS. This marks the first occasion on which I have engaged with individuals from my homeland. It was a rewarding experience to convey genuine insights regarding the principles of leadership that we are taught, as well as the realities encountered in practical life. In truth, we are seldom fully equipped to confront the various hardships and challenges; we acquire knowledge through experience, learn from others, and cultivate resilience over time, with humility playing a significant role in this process. It is essential for us to maintain a state of continuous learning, recognizing our strengths as Builders and Runners, as well as those of our team, to determine where to begin and whom to involve. Furthermore, my background in aviation and medicine has undoubtedly contributed to the development of innovative pathways for Doc2Us during the Covid pandemic; remaining in a state of continuous learning and acquiring diverse skills is another valuable asset. However, it is important to remember that a CEO is also a human being who must balance public, private, and personal aspects of life. The support system surrounding them is crucial for ongoing assistance and rejuvenation. Thank you for providing me with this international platform to share my experiences and empower my fellow Mauritians.

The online workshop on Emotional Resilience for Leaders was outstanding. Despite the virtual format, it delivered a highly engaging and interactive experience. The facilitator’s expertise in emotional intelligence and stress management was evident, providing practical strategies that are immediately applicable. The workshop’s exercises and discussions helped me develop a deeper understanding of how to lead with empathy and resilience. Since participating, I’ve seen a noticeable improvement in my ability to handle challenges and support my team effectively. This workshop is an invaluable resource for any leader aiming to enhance their emotional resilience and create a positive work environment.

The JCI City Plus workshop on How to Talk, Think & Act like a CEO was very informative, with the presenter giving an insight into leadership from a rather tactical point of view. Contrary to the traditional leadership styles of past generations, the discussion revolved more around the need for emerging leaders to recognize the environments they now have to operate in: digital markets, emotional intelligence and AI. With emphasis on behavioural skills such as resilience, communication and adaptability, it was very interesting to hear how a person (the presenter) with two completely different spheres of specialism was able to flex their skills and maximize their potential in a completely new environment during a time of crisis i.e. Covid.

The host explained clearly what the objectives of the organisation were and it is very comforting to see that young people are being empowered to transform themselves to respond to change, develop the confidence to tackle issues previously considered sensitive and to contribute more to social value. Great knowledge-sharing session.

The Autism Awareness campaign is a laudable and challenging campaign which aims to culminate in creating employment opportunities for people with autism. It was inspiring to witness the passion and dedication of the JCI Team before the start of the campaign and its first activity at Trianon, in collaboration with other partners with the same mission.

Members of the public made the most of the interactions and were able to have their questions answered by JCI members and Autisme Mauritius. The friendliness and warmth in the approach of the team made the atmosphere cozy and allowed everyone to interact and share in a very authentic manner.

Very well done to team JCI and all the best.

The "How to Think, Talk, and Act Like a CEO" training was an eye-opener. It really helped me understand how to think more strategically, communicate with confidence, and make better decisions. It also encourages taking responsibility, helping to be more proactive and take ownership of our actions.

I believe this will help create future leaders by giving them the mindset and skills to lead with purpose and inspire others.

2024 JCI Mauritius National Convention

(NATCON)

This year, the theme of the JCI Mauritius National Convention (NATCON) 2024 was Level Up with Artificial Intelligence. While some may perceive it as merely a transient buzzword, the discussions led by distinguished speakers such as Lovelesh Beeharry, Mr. Kiran Bhujun, Mr Shoayb Peerbocus & Dr Ismael Essackjee, all brightly hosted by Tasneem Jaumally have effectively dispelled this notion. Artificial Intelligence is Here To Stay to permanently transform various aspects of contemporary life, from recruitment processes to educational assessment systems. What advancements lie ahead? How can we effectively predict and monitor climate change in the present day?

The 2025 JCI Mauritius board has been elected, and we extend our best wishes for a successful mandate, focusing on enhancing fairness, transparency, and the inclusion of all JCI chapters to genuinely embody the spirit of brotherhood.

PHASE 2 : AUTISM EMPOWERMENT

The second phase of our community initiative, Autism Empowerment, has officially commenced. Following extensive discussions, presentations, and brainstorming sessions with Autism Maurice and the Global Rainbow Foundation, which operates a training center for adults, JCI City Plus is dedicated to facilitating access to training for capable autistic children. With the support of sponsors such as Magellan, we aspire to improve the quality of life and promote greater independence for these individuals. The Mental Health team is continuously striving to secure additional sponsorships and trainers through their relentless efforts.

PHASE 2 : AUTISM EMPOWERMENT

JCI City Plus, in collaboration with Be a Roshan, recently organized a transformative training session with Autism Mauritius, focusing on the wellbeing of children with autism and their parents. During this engaging event, participants experienced the calming effects of reiki therapy, which promotes relaxation and emotional healing. Parents were educated on the significance of reiki, highlighting its potential benefits in reducing anxiety and enhancing the overall emotional health of both children and caregivers.

PHASE 2 : AUTISM EMPOWERMENT

In addition to the reiki session, the children engaged in mandala painting, a creative activity known to foster mindfulness and self-expression. This form of art allows children to explore their creativity while also helping to improve concentration and motor skills. Be a Roshan emphasized to parents how these activities not only support the children’s development but also encourage family bonding through shared experiences.

PHASE 2 : AUTISM EMPOWERMENT

The session provided a safe space for families to connect, learn, and grow together.
