Message from JCI President Ryubun Kojima

Dear members of the APDC, Our world is still in distress and the pandemic is mostly ongoing all over the globe, and this is even more of a reason why JCI is still so relevant. We have not ONCE stopped working, stopped reaching for more ways to help our societies, nor stopped striving to better ourselves and those around us.
You, the members of the APDC, stepped forward and played a major role, in a truly challenging time, to support the national and local organizations striving for growth. I would like to thank and commend all of you for taking on such responsibility and commitment for the development of JCI throughout Asia.
With your help, JCI will continue to grow. Your term as the 2020-2021 APDC team will come to an end but your accomplishments will not – it will be passed down to the incoming 2021-2022 APDC team and they will carry on your legacy. Together we can support young, innovative entrepreneurs, as we are doing today, empower the global workforce and create One Future where we stand proud as strong JCI leaders.
Once again, thank you very much for taking on this challenge and I wish you all the best in your future activities. I look forward to working with you all again.
Message from JCI APDC Special Advisor Dato Dr. Hian Tsin Tan
I am very happy to have this opportunity to share a few words with the members of the 2021/2022 JCI APDC team, as well as the incoming members of the 2021/2022 team, and hopefully to be able to encourage you all as you confront a world filled with challenges.
Now, with most of APDC’s meetings being held online, it must be much more difficult than it was in the past, to interact and do activities in the way you might wish. Nevertheless, APDC is proudly carrying out JCI’s mission in the Asia Pacific and, the more you struggle, the more noteworthy your results will be when you achieve them.
Your work to support your target countries is critical to the success of our movement, so please to do your very best to help them develop strong confidence and to establish themselves as pillars of society in their respective communities and nations.
Wishing you all excellent heart and great success in the year ahead; Icommend your courage and determination in taking on many challenges in this new era!
Message from JCI Executive Vice President Teresa Poon

Dear members from APDC, I would like to send my warmest greetings to each of you.

APDC is always at the beginning of the progress of every field of JCI the years, APDC has nurtured not only developing NOMs in Asia Pacific, but also countless young passionate leaders under her wing.
“Grounded and Strong” because in the midst of pandemic, when everything seems to be falling apart, we have the mission to keep it together and lead our young members to rise together with the community again. It’s important we deliver accurate information, smart strategy, to engage and empower our members in new, innovative and high-impact ways the world has never seen.
APDC has been striving to connect with their assigned NOMs, affiliated or yet to be affiliated, with unrestrained manner against all odds. I would like to take this opportunity to thanks everyone in the team who have tried their best to keep it together for a challenging 20/21 year – Councilors Tim, Daisuke, Cici, Andy, Munkhbat and their 44 development officers.
After a year of unprecedented challenges, we will see a world that is steadily returning to normal, while also rapidly accelerating into a transformed future. Thereupon, we will know, our endeavor is valuable.
Under the great leadership of 2021 chairperson Ronald Kan, I can see a grounded and strong foundation, friendship and bonding among APDC members and their supervised NOMs and their effort to bridge the gap in the challenging year that we must keep social distance.
Let’s Rise Towards ONE FUTURE together!
Message from JCI APDC Chairperson Ronald Kan

It has again been an eventful half-year. Actually we had more than half a year because our term, in line with ASPAC, was extended to August. That means we had two more months to tie up our work and handover to the incoming officers.
APDC has been conducting online training on official, skills-based and JCI RISE courses for assigned countries throughout. Also we have organised two JCI × BNI sessions to further JCI RISE. Further, we connected Chambers of Commerce with assigned countries to help them with recruitment. All these are to ensure assigned countries have a solid foundation as they remain Grounded and Strong beyond our term. Some assigned countries though are difficult to connect because of the pandemic. We are in search of new membership leads like local young entrepreneurs to introduce JCI to them and recruit them so they become another new support for the membership base.
Connection with the other three Development Councils, namely Africa and Middle East, American and European Development Councils is strong as we have conducted two Global Events where we nominated Councilor Tim and Development Officer Aki as speakers representing Asia and the Pacific. I am pleased to see our officers being passionate to exchange with JCI members across the world which enriched their experience as well as sparked new ideas to share with assigned countries.
Covid is stabalising in certain countries and social distancing measures are relaxing there. Yet we are still unable to travel and visit our assigned countries. I am very grateful that digital transformation enabled us to meet virtually more often than before and impressed by how well APDC officers are using technology to connect and assist assigned countries.
Thank you APDC officers for sharing your laughter with me and doing your very best as you had to put in extra efforts than what would a normal mission require. I know your assigned countries are grateful for all you have done for them. I look forward to seeing you in person soon!
Please stay safe, stay healthy and stay happy!
Message from JCI APDC Immediate Past Chairperson Rumana Chowdhury

The year 2020 has been a very challenging year for every single one of us and it seems that 2021 is no difference. The pandemic has impacted every single corner of the world. However, despite of all these adversities, my heart fills with lot of hopes and positivity when I witness the tremendous commitment, hard work and dedication of every single JCI Member. I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to the entire APDC team for their relentless efforts to support the National Organisations.
Amongst many lessons, this pandemic has taught us on how to be connected through technology. We as APDC and JCI as a whole have shown the world that nothing can deter our spirit. From travelling bans to inability of conducting physical meetings, there has been numerous hurdles and the APDC team has overcome all the adversities with utmost commitment and unity. The heart of JCI, that is the youths have once again shown the world, that nothing is impossible, when we have the right mindset and the right attitude.
Finally, I would like to thank everyone for their invaluable contribution towards making APDC what it is today. Dear Team, I would like to sincerely request you to continue your support and co operation like you have for all these years. Let us all take one step at a time to bring numerous positive changes to the global community through a fantastic platform that we call APDC.

Myanmar report
When I first assign to Myanmar the goal was to move JCI Myanmar from a potential national organization to
national organization, some of the befits including JCI Myanmar will get is an assigned JCI vice president will provide further assistant to JCI Myanmar. In November of 2020 we had assist JCI Myanmar to fill out all the required documents and submit the request. The only problem we had was the nonprofit organization by law of Myanmar and we had to come up with three plans in order to move Myanmar to provisional national organization. Because JCI Myanmar has to be an fully affiliated national organization after two years after being moved to provisional national organization. To become a provisional organization, JCI Myanmar should have a register in Myanmar, or, at least, it is needed to be in the progress of making registration. According to the discussions, there are 3 options that can make valid for next provisional status.
Option 1: Getting organization registration/recognition from the Chambers of Commerce in Myanmar. Normally, it can be applied if the organization has a register. This option may take times to get recognition from them and need some negotiations with them.
Option 2: Apply NGO/INGO registration in Myanmar. This option may take times (more than 6 months) to run the process of registration with required documents to submit and need a recommendation letter from a relevant Ministry. And, the most important thing is that BODs should be permanent at least for 3 years and it is almost impossible to change BODs annually due to our JCI Constitution.
Option 3: Apply the Company registration which is more easier steps rather than NGO registration in Myanmar. This option is also quite similar process with NGO registration and it is not required to get recommendation letter from any major authorities. Directors of company can change with some amount of fees. On the other hand, taxations will be applied according to the laws for registered private company in Myanmar. Info link: https://www.myco.dica.gov.mm/public/PrescribedForms.aspx
Also the JCI official training provided to JCI New Zealand was provided to JCI Myanmar as well including JCI Discover, Engage, Empower, Grow!

At the end of year 2020 when JCI Myanmar was getting ready for their national annual general meeting, APDC was able to do the annual general meeting training so JCI Myanmar could understand how other countries have the election processes and how an annual general meeting was conducted according to JCI protocol, so APDC consulted with JCI Yangon and JCI Inya along with national board to discuss and advice the proper way to conduct an annual general meeting. Also APDC was able to encourage national president and chapter presidents to fill out positions in board of directors and also encourage them to fill members in different positions so they can be responsible in their positions and gain interest to JCI.
After the national board and local board was formed. APDC had discussion with the national board and decide to do a parliamentary training by APDC chairperson Ronald. Also to further assist JCI Myanmar to have more programs to attract more members, APDC also provided the national debating contest training, to help members understand how to host a national debating contest and with a formal world national debating champion to share how to go from signing up the contest to win the contest.

New Zealand report

New Zealand Portfolio report
In order to connect and promote APDC to rest of the growth and development committee, team Myanmar and New Zealand had hosted a BNI session with growth and development committee, to exchange business information and to have council members get to know each other.
Throughout the year we were in touch with JCI New Zealand and trying to find out and provide information from JCI HQ to JCI New Zealand. JCI APDC kept in touch with JCI New Zealand National board which was led by national president Dion Morley.

Also in September of 2020 APDC hosted series of different JCI official training to our assign countries including JCI Discover, Engage, Empower, Grow! Several times so members can join these trainings accordingly. Via these trainings we can engage more members with these two latest JCI official courses to ensure that they have the latest knowledge to understand JCI in order to have positive JCI spirit so they would strive to invite more members to join.
During the year 2020 and 2021 COVID- 19 had effected everyone substantially specially in businesses, so in 2021 JCI APDC has hosted a BNI style meeting to connect all the JCI and BNI members and resulting more than 500 members joined which opens the door for many business opportunities. At the same month JCI APDC also hosted a strategies for social media branding training, which aids our members to know how to strategies thru social media to create JCI branding during this pandemic time.

One of the hurdles of JCI New Zealand is that the geographical distances between chapters are quite far away from each other, so in the year of 2021 JCI New Zealand had gained three additional chapters in different cities so they can ensure that more chapters can reach out to more people locally. And snice new chapters are lack of experiences in meetings and parliamentary procedures, and the responsibilities of each position, so we decided to give out the parliamentary, governance and conferences training before our term is over and hopefully this training will help members gain knowledge about how to have effective official meetings so they can run the chapter according to official JCI procedures. Therefore the local chapters can reach out to more new members and make more impact to local areas in the future.
JCI APDC also collaborate with JCI China and Japan committee, to assist JCI Japan connect with Chinese chamber of commerce in assign countries. In March 7th APDC had a sharing session with JCI Growth and Development committee about the topic of building a sustainable organization.

Laos & Sri Lanka report
As COVID-19 spreads all over the world, we must think about what we can do and what we should do from among the members, and develop the APDC movement that we can do now. And our role remains the same under the influence of COVID-19. First of all, it is necessary to deepen exchanges with the formed team members and form a team. Therefore, we used the online feature to contact members of the assigned country. It's hard to do a mission when I can't meet them. I don't really understand the local situation and their thoughts. However, I heard from them the problems they are having now. After all, the biggest problem is the human resource development part. In the current situation, they have reduced JCI's awareness and have been unable to operate due to their own problems. But as long as we have the responsibility, we have to do it. Therefore, we held many meetings and conducted a lot of training. The first is training to get to know JCI. I thought it was important to know the significance of doing JCI. We couldn't get a lot of participants together, but the members who participated changed their feelings and felt like facing JCI. If one person changes, the people around him will change their minds. There are still many things to do, but the consciousness of the members has changed little by little. We hope that the number of members who sympathize with us will increase by conducting activities that lead from our training to solving problems in our own country. And we hope that we no longer need to help and that their organization will become independent and leap forward. The second was a business-focused seminar. In this seminar, we will introduce each other's businesses and provide business matching. Then, we held a seminar in collaboration with another organization, BNI. In our country of responsibility, there are many organizations specializing in business other than JCI. In order to collaborate with such organizations and break through the current COVID-19, business collaboration is necessary, and JCI has further strengthened its organization through this collaboration. It would be good if we could continue to strengthen this initiative and create more value for JCI. We held such seminars mainly in Sri Lanka, the country in charge, and strengthened the development of members. Sri Lanka is a NOM with a long history, but it still needs support. There were many people who did not know JCI even though they were members, so it was necessary to strengthen the foundation. I would like Sri Lanka to strengthen this foundation and carry out activities in the future. They also need a leader. This year, the chairman was decided late, and the start was delayed. Partly because of that, executives do not follow. In order to strengthen the organization, it is necessary to quickly determine leaders, set goals, and carry out activities. I will take over next year so that it will not happen. Next is Laos, one of the designated countries. There is no official her JCI in Laos. Also, due to the influence of COVID-19, the members did not gather this year. And they don't even have a project plan. I heard that some members were interested in JCI after taking over last year, but the members collapsed due to the influence. We decided to start from scratch. We attacked people doing business in Laos and organizations gathering in the business. First of all, we focused on communicating the significance of JCI and conducted APDC activities online. And we need a leader who will lead the movement in Laos. And there are various business organizations in Laos. It would be better to invite them to JCI and launch JCI in Laos. However, this does not convey my thoughts unless I go to the site. It is necessary to collect a lot of information and prepare for it until the current situation disappears and we can go to the actual place.

Laos & Sri Lanka Portfolio report

We have utilized our portfolio. I am in charge of business networking and rebuilding. We held a business seminar centered on JCI RISE. Business-oriented organizations such as JCI and BNI will build partnerships and rebuild the country through business. APDC members will also join the portfolio and open a page on Facebook to share information such as the status of COVID-19 and projects to enhance JCI RISE. This portfolio can be used by both members and people in their country of responsibility. Business collaboration is important to break through the current situation, and if we can support each other, I think there is a future. And the world is full of organizations specializing in many businesses. If such an organization and JCI cooperate, it is possible to further strengthen the organization and increase the number of members. This portfolio is an effective tool. I was confused by the first initiative, but I was convinced that it was an important initiative in progress. This activity needs to be continued in the future. I will hand it over to the next team. I have high expectations for APDC in the future.

Councilor’s Reports
Councilor Esti “Cici” Nalurani (JCI Indonesia)

Timor-Leste report
This year, the spread of COVID-19 worldwide has also had a significant impact on APDC activity. We expected to visit assign country once during my term of office to increase the number of members and project with local members, but we couldn't actually go there.

Crisis of COVID-19 has led to a very critical situation in JCI East Timor, not only our activities as APDC, but also the activities of local members as JCI and the economic activities of local individual members.

We have tried to maintain their motivation even under this situation, and have been aiming for Provisional membership from Potential membership through our stable activities. Specifically, we devised three methods. The first was regular communication among individual members by listening to the consultations of local members to connect them to better activities. Secondly, we tried to raise their understanding of JCI by training JCI official training programs for members of JCI Timor-Leste. The third was to connect with local economic organizations through human networks. After that we hold business seminars, and recruit entrepreneurs and foreign members living in Timor-Leste.
In actually taking these actions, the problem was that due to the economic and political circumstances of the local members, there was insufficient cooperation among the members of JCI Timor-Leste, and due to the absence of a leader in any case, it was very difficult to engage active members in the process.
If we can't go to the assign country, the idea of responding on the web is a very effective idea, but there is a limit to relying only on this method, and we faced that problem.

Our organization is made up of people who sympathize with JCI's philosophy, but we noticed that the members who are composed have developed friendships and passions by communication in the face with individual members. After all, communication in the face is the most important thing in order to expand our activities, and we think that communication on the Web will become effective because of that.

In April 2021, flood disasters caused by heavy rains in Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste, occurred many deaths and evacuees. As a Timor-Leste Team, we discussed with the APDC Japan Team. After that we send 30,000 medical masks for donation to Dili in July 2021. The aim of Mask donation was preventing the spread of infection in evacuation shelters, this medical mask was delivered to the site with the cooperation of NPO Peace Winds Japan.

Upon arrival, members of JCI Timor-Leste and NPO Peace Winds Japan will jointly distribute this mask. Local members who have not been able to do activities this year, so we hope that the local people will recognize JCI Timor-Leste through this mask distribution activity.
Timor-Leste Portfolio report

We leveraged our portfolio and were responsible for online training. First of all, we held monthly online training for APDC members, mainly JCI DISCOVER and JCI EXPLORE. Learning leadership and follow-up thinking through this program is very effective and allows us to learn important thinking not only in your work at JCI, but also in your business. Since this portfolio can be used by both APDC members and their countries, we could continue to use the portfolio to operate APDC efficiently in the next fiscal year. This portfolio is an effective tool. It is quite difficult to work only on the web, but if we can visit to the site in the next fiscal year, we will be able to expect further effects. This activity will be carried over to the next team. We look forward to the future progress of APDC

Thailand report
In the beginning of our term, I have outlined four main hurdles that are needed to tackle effectively; for instance, language barrier, low level of engagement between members, lack of active members and lack of JCI knowledge. Hence, I have set clear goals and expectations to overcome these problems during our term.
Under the leadership of National President of JCI Thailand, JCI Thailand has successfully identified two potential local organisations in other provinces such as Samut Sakhon and Chiang Mai. This initiative will certainly leads to a rise of membership for JCI Thailand in the future. I have also come to realize that there isn’t much JCI awareness in Thailand as compared to other non-profit organizations. Hence, we are assisting JCI Thailand to establish a new sustainable flagship project such as TOYP to strengthen the presence of JCI in Thailand. Ultimately, this event will draw great attention and gain sponsorships from the governments, entrepreneurs and NGO, where JCI Thailand could leverage on these sponsorships as a marketing strategy to gain greater awareness from the community. During Covid-19 pandemic, JCI Thailand has also started to collaborate with their new partner, BNI Thailand to organise business networking session as this provide a platform for the members to connect and exchange business ideas.
Due to the language barrier, JCI Thailand has agreed to set up skill development commission for the members, so they are equipped with training skills to conduct JCI training courses in Thai language. Skill development commission can benefit JCI Thailand to grow the number of trainers who can speak in Thai language. During our term, there are several trainings being organized by APDC to improve the trainers’ level of expertise and skills such as Project Management, Engage Empower and Grow, E Award Writing, Project Planning Training etc.. We truly hope that with these initiatives, we are able to assist members to develop their training skills, have the ability to train their own members and eventually can identify some high potentials as head trainers near future.
Thailand Portfolio report
One of our portfolio is to manage social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Youtube. As we believe that social media plays a significant role in creating public awareness, we have created an introductory video in the beginning of our term in office to spread JCI creed vision and mission to the young active citizens. JCI APDC 2020 – 2021 Chairperson, Councilor, Secretary, Treasurer and Chairperson Special Assistant have gave their short speeches in the video. This video has gained over 1,200 views on our Facebook page. In July 2021, we have also created several introductory videos to introduce the JCI teams and the past achievements in the specific countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Laos, Myanmar and New Zealand. Additionally, Facebook private group (APDC X Assigned Country) was created as an initiative to engage all the APDS 2020 – 2021 members and the assigned countries, and to notify on the upcoming events schedule.

How the Coucilor changed the country of responsibility throughout the year

Vietnam report
The outbreak of the pandemic – Covid 19, affected all our daily lives and we were not able to travel to fulfil our mission on ground. Nonetheless, with the technologies available, JCI APDC team was able to communicate with JCI Vietnam with ease via using Zoom and Messenger.

In 2020, JCI Vietnam lead by National President Truong Duc Luong, we managed to establish our first meeting between APDC Vietnam team and JCI Vietnam. JCI Vietnam would like to build a system for trainings. There was not much ground activities due to the pandemic outbreak and they had moved most activities online. This had cause a lesser engagement amongst the members. The JCI Vietnam members had worked hard by creating projects that can be done online to keep the engagement going between members.
In 2021, JCI Vietnam lead by National President Vo Quan Duy (Sam), Trainings (Appendix 1) were scheduled and also translated in Vietnamese language as this would help to cover the gap of language barrier. With more trainers trained in all the respective JCI courses, JCI Vietnam members were able to conduct the trainings as part of their Academy team.
Business Matching Programme was much of the focus in JCI Vietnam for 2021. They would like to promote the mutual support platform between businesses in JCI, expand trade outside of JCI and facilitate international trade through activities. We provide support by inviting members of various trades when there is a session going on to establish the connection among the trades.
JCI APDC team had a collaboration with Hong Kong Business Association of Vietnam (HKBAV) (Refer to Appendix 2). We hold a session of a meeting with a featured speaker on the topic of digital transformation. There were an estimated of 50 participants from APDC, JCI Vietnam and HKBAV. There were 2 breakout sessions for all the members to know one another, at the same time, we hope that after this session, we were able to help JCI Vietnam to increase the membership.
Lastly, we aim to help JCI Vietnam to graduate from APDC by next term with our best ability, by year 2022.
