MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT AND CEO
November, 2019 As we gather tonight in the homes of our friends and community leaders to celebrate that “We Are Rockland,” it serves to remind us of the ties that bind us to one another, to each other and to the community. And it also reminds us that the JCC is our home away from home. JCC Rockland makes a difference in the lives of those who walk through its door. And while all we do at the J is filtered through a Jewish lens we are also the one Jewish institution that works to serve the entire community. Each of you here tonight has made a difference in choosing to support the JCC. The JCC could not do the remarkable work that it does each day without generous people like you. Whether caring for our very youngest in the Deborah Koenig Early Childhood Center, or organizing activities for our older adults in the Chazen Senior Center, or meeting the physical fitness and wellness needs of so many others at the Russin Fitness & Wellness Center, or providing an outstanding camp or after school experience for our children—the JCC meets those needs and more, enriching the Rockland Jewish and wider communities every day. The same can be said of our outstanding honorees this year. It is a privilege to honor Rich Hesse, and Mercedes-Benz of Nanuet; Rabbi Brian Leiken, spiritual leader of Temple Beth Sholom, and Andrea Myer-Winograd, executive director of the Holocaust Museum & Center for Tolerance. Each of them has poured a great deal of time, energy and resources into our community to make it a better place, because it is our home. You can read their bios in the journal. Approximately 1,000 people walk through the doors of the Rockland Jewish Community Campus each day. They may be coming to the JCC to drop off their child for a program or to workout; or to the Jewish Federation and Foundation of Rockland County to take a Melton Class; or to Rockland Jewish Family Service, which offers mental health assistance, support and programming; or to purchase a bond supporting the State of Israel through the Rockland Israel Bonds office. This is the place where we can all come together, were we can proudly say, “We Are Rockland.” Thank you to the hosts who are opening up their homes tonight for house parties, to our spectacular honorees, to our donors, sponsors, and attendees for the support you provide each day to the J. Kol hakavod!

Rich Hesse – Mercedes -Benz of Nanuet Since becoming part of the Rockland County community in 2012, Rich Hesse and his Mercedes-Benz of Nanuet team have maintained a motto of, “It’s Not Business, It’s Personal™”. Rich has expanded Mercedes-Benz of Nanuet’s support and partnerships with many non-profits in our community. Unlike other corporate entities that pick one or two charities to champion, Mercedes-Benz of Nanuet has widened its reach to embrace all areas of our community’s philanthropic landscape. Rich and Mercedes-Benz of Nanuet have taken an active role as a major sponsor in several fundraising initiatives, the JCC being one of them. The success of this joint venture is a win-win and Mercedes-Benz of Nanuet has implemented similar partnerships within the Rockland County community. Rich has supported both public and private school events, Nyack and Good Samaritan Hospitals and local non-profits such as Jawonio, United Hospice of Rockland and St. Dominic’s Home. Whether it be a Catholic parish, Hindu Temple or a Jewish community center, Mercedes-Benz of Nanuet approaches each with an open mind and a desire to help raise awareness, support and funds for each to better serve their communities. Charity is not the first word that comes to mind when you see a Mercedes-Benz. Words such as luxury, enviable and exclusive are usually associated with an automobile of this caliber. Yet sometimes what we believe to be unlikely is very much possible. All you need is someone with the desire to make a difference to come along. That is who and what Rich Hesse and the rest of his team at Mercedes-Benz of Nanuet have proven - that they are committed to being something more than just the local Mercedes-Benz dealer.

Rabbi Brian Leiken Rabbi Brian Leiken has been the Senior Rabbi at Temple Beth Sholom since June of 2012. As the religious leader of Temple Beth Sholom, Rabbi Leiken has transitioned the temple into a relational synagogue-one that is built upon the strength of its relationships between clergy and members. Rabbi Leiken serves on the Board of JCC Rockland, teaches in the Jewish Federations’ Melton program and is the president of the Rockland County Board of Rabbis. In 2019, Rabbi Leiken, alongside the Rockland Jewish Family Service, helped develop a county wide mental health awareness campaign called "You Are Not Alone." Rabbi Leiken has also been actively involved in community-weaving efforts to break down barriers and forge alliances between area synagogues and Jewish institutions. Rabbi Leiken is a native of Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated with honors from Brandeis University in 1998 with a B.A. in Sociology. He then went to work in Washington, D.C. as a Legislative Assistant at the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism (the lobbying arm of the Reform Jewish Movement) and as a Senior Legislative Associate at Public Campaign. He had the opportunity to become involved with the Union for Reform Judaism’s Commission on Social Action, the Interfaith Alliance, Americans United for the Separation of Church and State, the American Jewish Committee and the Anti-Defamation League. Rabbi Leiken’s work in Washington led him on a new career path. He attended the Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion where he was ordained in May of 2007. Rabbi Leiken then served as the Associate Rabbi at Temple Shalom in Norwalk, Connecticut for five years. Rabbi Leiken and his wife, Shara, have two sons, Kaleb and Ari, and reside in Rockland County.

Andrea Myer-Winograd Andrea Winograd is the Executive Director of the Holocaust Museum and Center for Tolerance and Education. As the mother of three incredible daughters, her passion in life is leveraging the good in everyone to make a positive impact on the world. Andrea hopes that today more than ever, others will join in this passion and work together. Educated at Northeastern University in Boston, MA, Andrea graduated with a degree in Marketing and began her career leading sales for a Japanese denim company for many years. When her three daughters joined the family, Andrea took time off to raise the girls and settle back in Rockland County. A few years later, Andrea returned to look for meaningful work, starting with a China adoption agency and an organization supporting developmentally disabled clients. Eventually, she joined the family mortgage business with her mother, Geri Myer. Eight years ago, Andrea joined the Holocaust Museum and she hasn’t looked back. Finding her true niche in the community, she relishes the honor of leading an organization dedicated to creating a positive impact through memory and education. Outside of work Andrea thrills in the moments spent with family and friends – especially when hiking, skiing, traveling, and attending the theater.

Rockland Jewish Community Campus The Rockland Jewish Community Campus is being honored for its role as a central address for the Jewish community, enriching Jewish life, and welcoming the entire community. The Rockland Jewish Community Campus (RJCC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with the mission to secure the Campus as a central address of the Rockland Jewish Community today and for future generations. Enhancing Jewish life is at the core of its mission, and it plays a significant role in the wider community as an inviting and welcoming place for all. In 1997, the Rockland Jewish community raised $5 million to purchase its first Rockland Jewish Community Campus. It was a 26,000 sq. ft. building on 5.5 acres on Route 45 in the Town of Ramapo. The Campus thrived and outgrew the existing space. A group of Jewish leaders, who understood the invaluable role of the Campus, had a shared vision of a larger Campus. They each invested their time and financial resources and began a Capital Campaign to purchase the 135,000 sq. ft. building on 15 acres in West Nyack. The community supported the campaign. The RJCC opened on December 2, 2007 with both American and Israel flags visible as 5,000 plus community members came out on a snowy day to tour the Campus. Today, the Campus tenants include Jewish Federation & Foundation of Rockland County, Rockland Jewish Family Service, the local office of Israel Bonds, and JCC Rockland all under one roof. The agencies are thriving and benefiting from residing together. More than one thousand people walk through the Campus door every year. Studies show that a thriving Jewish Community Campus has a positive impact on synagogue membership and engagement with other Jewish agencies. Just a few examples of how the RJCC positively affects the community include:
The JCC has 4,000 members and another 6,000 participants annually
Rockland Jewish Family Service serves hundreds of community members in need, including the 200 families who receive monthly food packages from the Rhoda Bloom Kosher Food Pantry
The Chazen Senior Center serves more than 1,000 seniors
Community wide celebrations such as Israel @ 70 under the leadership of Jewish Federation and Foundation have drawn crowds of 1,000 plus people
The Deborah Koenig full day early childhood center, for 6-week old infants to Pre-K children, started in 2014 has grown to over 100 children.
JCC Summer camps have grown from a total of 50 children in 2012 to 300 children a week
The campus is an inviting and welcoming place, regardless of religious background, ethnicity, race, income, special needs or nationality. The RJCC kicked off a capital campaign with a goal to eliminate the Campus debt and secure the building for future generations.
