Mountains to Main Street

CASHIERS/ SAPPHIRE VALLEY/GLENVILLE

Cashiers is an unincorporated village on the southern end of Jackson County. It is home to some of the highest vistas in the county, including those in neighboring communities Sapphire Valley and Glenville.

Sitting at 3,484 elevation, Cashiers/Sapphire Valley and Glenville are known for their eclectic shops and boutiques, world-renowned private golf courses, majestic views (Whiteside Mountain, Whitewater Falls, Fairfield Lake, Lake Glenville), events, restaurants and lodging.

CHEROKEE

The Qualla Boundry is home to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Nation. The 18th-century Cherokee lifestyle is preserved via live demonstrations in the village and in the summer, the drama “Unto These Hills” tells the tribal story at an outdoor theatre. The nearby Great Smoky Mountains National Park features campgrounds and hiking trails. Cherokee is home to the Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort, a world-class venue for gaming, lodging, dining, concerts and much more.

CULLOWHEE/FOREST HILLS

Cullowhee is the proud home of Western Carolina University and the surrounding businesses and residences designed to service campus needs.

Western Carolina University has been named the premiere outdoor adventure college in the region for several years and enrollment at WCU has steadily grown to over 11,000 students.

The Village of Forest Hills is a welcoming, safe, and thriving residential community adjacent to the college.

DILLSBORO

A village of shops, crafters, family restaurants and diverse events, Dillsboro is proud to host annual festivals including Colorfest, Lights and Luminaries, and an Easter Hat parade, just to name a few.

The popular Great Smoky Mountains Railroad makes a stop in Dillsboro throughout the busy spring, summer and fall months.

SYLVA/WEBSTER

Sylva is the county seat of Jackson and has been named one of the greatest places to retire in the U.S. Residents and visitors enjoy annual festivals and events. Sylva boasts a wide array of restaurants and now has four breweries, three bookstores and an eclectic shopping experience featuring unique clothing, arts, crafts, jewelry, antiques, cocktail lounges and consignment stores. The neighboring town of Webster is a quiet residential community situated on top of a hill overlooking the Tuckaseigee River. It is situated just south of Sylva before entering Cullowhee.

century of chamber

The Jackson County Chamber of Commerce is turning 100-years-old in 2023. Located in the beautiful Historic Hooper House, the chamber has been a staple of Jackson County since 1923. Although not always located in the Hooper House, the chamber has been solidifying strong businesses and communities in Jackson County for a century. This year we have lots of special ideas and events planned to celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime milestone. Fired up for the Fourth

T he Jackson County Chamber of Commerce will proudly present its July 4 Fireworks Festivities for the ninth year in a row on Tuesday, July 4, 2023.

This year’s special event will feature an exciting concert by one of the state’s finest bands, the “Carolina Soul Band,” who will perform classic soul/R&B/beach music, followed by an impressive fireworks show when the sun goes down.

The concert will be at the Bridge Park Pavilion in

downtown Sylva, where there will be food trucks, children’s activities and more family-friendly celebration.

Local residents and visitors can see the fireworks from just about any viewing location in the downtown Sylva area including Main Street, Mill Street and the Jackson County Historic Courthouse steps. Summer Concerts

ach summer, the Town of Sylva, Jackson County Parks and Recreation Department and Jackson County Chamber of Commerce team up to produce the Concerts on the Creek series at the Bridge Park gazebo in Sylva. These 15 events occur every Friday from 7-9 p.m., Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Concerts on the Creek are free and open to the public with donations encouraged. Bring a chair or blanket. There may be food truck vendors on site as well. Following are the confirmed bands/dates for the 14th annual Concerts on the Creek season in 2023.

Jackson County is home to the Western North Carolina Fly Fishing Trail - the nation’s first.

The trail maps out 15 prime spots to catch brown, rainbow and brook trout. From wide-open, crystal clear rivers to secluded Great Smoky Mountain streams, the WNC Fly Fishing Trail has you covered. In 2016, the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce led the effort for our home to become the official Trout Capital of N.C. Legislators on both the N.C. House and Senate floors recognized Jackson County as the “Premier Trout Fishing Destination” in the state. Follow the N.C. Trout Capital at www.nctroutcapital.com.

Jackson County contains 4,600 miles of trout streams and receives an annual stocking of 92,800 trout, which is the most of any county in the state. It also features the state’s longest contiguous stretch of N.C. Mountain Heritage Trout Waters. Jackson County is the home of the state record for the largest rainbow trout ever caught. Jackson County has 31 public access points for fishing; supports fishing classes for children; is home to the nation’s largest river cleanup day in the country; and plays host to its own chapter of Trout Unlimited. There are now six retail fly shops and more than 25 guides in Jackson County. In 2022, the chamber began a sticker campaign to discourage littering called, "Don't Trash Where We Splash."

Friends Night Out

The Jackson County Chamber of Commerce will hold its third “Friends Night Out,” event from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, March 30 and Thursday, Oct. 5, 2023 in downtown Sylva.

The event is intended to create an economic impact on the area and encourage sales on an evening during a traditionally slower time of the year.

“Friends” simply stop by the chamber at 773 West Main Street in Sylva and register. There is no cost to participate. The first 50 participants that register will receive a free gift. After registering, “friends” are encouraged to start shopping, dining and perusing the streets of Sylva for great deals. Most stores will have special promotions, sales and perhaps even some surprise treats.

The more purchases you make, the

higher your chances are to win the grand prize.

At the end of the night, the chamber does a drawing from those who registered and those who made purchases with one lucky participant winning a shopping, dining and lodging frenzy worth over $300. The frenzy includes many gift certificates donated by over 20 participating merchants and restaurants.

The first two Friends Night Out events were held in the Spring and Fall of 2022. Those evenings, nearly 200 individual purchases were made at the 22 participating businesses. About 33% of the friends were from outside Jackson County.

Harris Regional among best maternity hospitals

Harris Regional Hospital has been named to Money Magazine and The Leapfrog Group’s inaugural list of Best Hospitals for Maternity Care.

The rankings are intended to help expecting parents make educated decisions about which hospitals consistently deliver the safest, highest-value care for patients and excellence in maternity experiences. Out of more than 2,200 hospitals surveyed, Harris Regional Hospital was one of 259 hospitals nationwide, and one of 30 in the state, to earn the first-time honor.
