Jubilee Community Care opened its doors to the elderly in the western suburbs 30 years ago. In August we celebrated our pearl anniversary with current staff and those from the early days, including former coordinator Susie Green, former carer Val Campbell, former coordinator Michele Wilkinson and former carer Denise Bolland, pictured above.

SABINA ADDS VALUE WITH BOARD TRAINING A desire to learn and serve Jubilee Community Care better was a motivating factor behind management committee member Sabina Janstrom undertaking the Women in Technology Board Readiness Program.

Sabina recently graduated from the program, which is capped at 20 participants - all of whom have a desire to apply their personal and professional skills to becoming a successful board member.

Sabina, who joined Jubilee’s committee in 2018, has more than a decade of experience as an information and communications technology director and general manager. She has a passion for strategy implementation, portfolio management and employee experience and has worked around the world.

“I am really enjoying my role on the committee as it gives me the ability to give back to my community with my time and expertise,” Sabina said. “But I did notice that some of the procedures the board is responsible for were new to me and I felt that I needed some training to get up to speed.

“The WIT program has given me the knowledge to be able to discharge my duty properly and with confidence. I love being involved in the decision-making process and being part of building something with long-term value.”

SERVICE CHANGES WITH PUBLIC HOLIDAYS

There will be some changes to services provided by Jubilee Community Care due to public holidays on October 7, December 25-26 and January 1 (see Save the Date table below).

Essential services of personal care, medication assistance and meal preparation will be provided on these days while domestic assistance, social support, respite and shopping will not be. Also, the office will be closed on these public holidays.

HIGH-CALIBRE WORK OF JUBILEE STAFF RECOGNISED IN AWARDS PROGRAMS It has been a big year for Jubilee Community Care. While our 30th birthday has been cause for celebration there also has been other reasons to rejoice.

As previously noted, Jubilee won the Team category at the Leading Aged Services Australia (LASA) Excellence in Aged Care Awards (Queensland). The client support coordination team, pictured, will learn if it has won the national award when LASA meets for its Australian congress in late October.

Jubilee also was shortlisted as one of five Queensland finalists in the Telstra Business Awards in the category of Social Change Maker this year. The awards were held in late September after this newsletter went to print so keep an eye out in January’s newsletter to see how we fared.

Lastly, we will find out this month if Jubilee has been shortlisted as a finalist in Hesta’s Aged Care Awards. We have entered the Team Innovation and Individual Distinction categories so again, watch this space to find out if we were successful.

Jubilee director Shaun Riley said the organisation’s biggest asset was its staff, contributing to Jubilee’s success so far across the different awards programs.

“One of the biggest avenues for us in terms of attracting clients is word of mouth and that is reflected back on to all of the wonderful and high quality work the support workers and volunteers do,” Mr Riley said. “The clients and their families speak about the calibre of people we employ and the quality of services they provide within the community. Without our employees we wouldn’t have had the clients as well as the longevity and success that we have had.”

HELP STREAMLINE JUBILEE’S OPERATIONS For many years at Jubilee Community Care we have distributed paper invoices and statements to keep clients up to date with necessary financial information.

However, Jubilee would now prefer to email this information. If you can receive these documents electronically, please email accounts@jccagedcare.org.au requesting this change in delivery of invoices and statements.

Also, the preferred method of paying monthly invoices is direct debit. To arrange payment via direct debit please phone Jubilee on 3871 3220. Of course, if direct debit is not possible, Jubilee still accepts payment of invoices via BPay, cheques through the mail and direct deposit.

STAY STANDING COURSES TO CONTINUE IN 2020 AFTER ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR The next Stay Standing program at Ashgrove Golf Club will be our final one for the year. Jubilee Community Care Stay Standing coordinator Sandy Kelly said the programs this year had been a great success.

“Jubilee has had a very successful year with the Stay Standing falls prevention program by assisting another 50 people to improve their balance and knowledge on how to prevent falls,” Sandy said. “There has been tremendous interest and response to our final Stay Standing at Ashgrove and we are looking forward to continuing in 2020.”

Stay Standing is the only accredited falls prevention program in Australia and includes a home program of exercises. Sessions are held on Fridays for eight weeks and each one includes exercises, presentations from allied health specialists and morning tea.

Program topics covered include:

 Assessment with physiotherapists Monique or Dean and a home program of exercises to prevent falls delivered in week one. »» Falls contingency planning, SMART goals and managing chronic pain. »» Managing continence with a nurse and Healthy Bones with a dietician. »» Safety at home with an occupational therapist, Vision with an optometrist and Hearing with a audiologist. »» Footwear to stay safe and comfortable on your feet with a podiatrist and Safety away from home with the Queensland Police Service. »» Managing medication and sleep with a pharmacist. »» First Aid including recognising common senior emergencies. »» Exercise review and outcomes and a celebration in the final week.

Jubilee recently received a $1000 Stockland Care Grant to assist with the delivery of Stay Standing. The grant will allow more people to participate in the program as well as assisting in its promotion.

EXERCISE IN THE COMFORT OF YOUR HOME WITH JUBILEE’S ACTIVE AT HOME PROGRAM Did you know Jubilee Community Care can facilitate a home exercise program for you to undertake regularly to boost physical wellbeing?

Active at Home is a simple, in-home exercise program designed specifically for older people who want to slow down the ageing process and regain their strength and confidence to keep active and independent.

Jubilee’s Active at Home coordinator Sandy Kelly said the program consisted of weight bearing and balance exercises which improved walking speed, balance ability and general mobility.

Sandy said Jubilee had five support workers trained to deliver Active at Home with another five currently undergoing training.

The support workers work one on one with participants, teaching them the correct techniques for the exercises which were developed by qualified exercise physiologists.

Active at Home participants undergo tests to determine their physical capacity and wellbeing with the trained support worker before being taught the exercises.

The support worker also provides basic equipment for the exercises and regularly meets with the participant and undertakes reviews as needed. Progress can be recorded on the Active at Home app.

“We want participants with reasonable health and mobility, who are relatively active but just feel as though they could gain some strength and assistance with balance,” Sandy said. “Perhaps these people don’t have the time to attend Stay Standing on a Friday but can have a support worker come to their home.”

Sandy said results from a trial program showed participants reported a substantial improvement in confidence and overall wellness, demonstrating a greater capacity to manage their own household tasks and get out and about.

She said the outcomes included increased physical function and independence, a steady and considerable reduction in participants’ needs for other health services, and significant improvements in general physical capacity and wellbeing.

A FABULOUS TURNOUT AND LOTS OF FUN FOR JUBILEE’S THIRTIETH ANNIVERSARY Birthday parties are such fun and Jubilee Community Care’s 30th anniversary celebrations were no exception!

Jubilee celebrated its pearl anniversary with two parties - a luncheon for clients at West Toowong Bowls Club and an evening function for staff, former staff and other invited guests. Both functions had about 75 people attend and were a great success.

During the client luncheon our raffle for two quilts, donated by the Monday Quilters at Redcliffe, was drawn.

First prize was won by the sister of client Bev P while client Sonia D won the second prize quilt. Both were thrilled. The raffle also helped raise $553 towards purchasing aids that will benefit Jubilee’s clients.

JUBILEE TRAINING KEY TO BEST PRACTICE Jubilee Community Care is committed to providing our staff with an excellent and diverse training program. Every member of staff, including our wonderful volunteers, attends this two-day training each year at a venue in Bardon.

Safe manual handling, medication assistance, infection control and fire safety are four topics covered in one day and repeated each year as part of our Mandatory Education program.

On the second day each year we cover new varying topics. In 2019 we have had presentations from LIFETEC on assistive technology in the home while The Silver Rainbow Program, presented by the Queensland Aids Council, has promoted awareness and provided education on the LGBTI community, with a particular focus on aged care support. The use of the Australian Community Care Outcomes Measurement (ACCOM) tool that was created by Macquarie University Sydney and implemented by Jubilee in 2018 also was a topic of focus in 2019. This tool assists with gathering information for annual reviews for clients.

Quality and training officer Deanne Garner said the staff and volunteers enjoyed honing their skills, learning new ones and absorbing information that assisted them to best support our valued clients. She said staff also appreciated the time spent with colleagues. Training throughout the year also covers First Aid, CPR, Dementia Education and Staff Meetings. Also, several staff are currently completing a Certificate 111 in Individual Support (Aged Care).

JUBILEE’S AGM AT TOOWONG IN OCTOBER

You are invited to Jubilee Community Care’s Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, October 8 at the Jephson Hotel, Jephson St, Toowong.

Before the business of the AGM, a buffet will be served at 6pm. It will be followed by a presentation on “Why Strategy Matters” and how strategic decisions have played a role in the growth of Jubilee in the past; the importance of strategy in the operation of Jubilee today; and why strategic planning is essential for not-forprofit organisations like Jubilee to survive and thrive. Presenters will be former Jubilee committee member Karl Manning, QUT Business School Postdoctural Research Fellow Dr Ruth Knight, and Jubilee director Shaun Riley.
