JUBILEE SHOWBAGS Jubilee Community Care’s Ekka Showbags proved almost as much fun as a visit to the annual show itself.

The showbags, delivered by our support workers in August, aimed to bring some much-needed community cheer to our valued clients.

The project also made stars out of a couple of our clients with 102-year-old Nancy and 95-year-old Alice featuring in a Channel 10 News segment. Director Shaun Riley also was interviewed on ABC Radio Brisbane about the initiative.

And the feedback from clients was wonderful, including a letter from Esme who said it was a great surprise to receive the showbag. “It really cheered me up at these difficult times to know someone cares,” she said.

SERVICE CHANGES WITH PUBLIC HOLIDAYS

There will be changes to Jubilee services with the upcoming public holidays. They will be on Monday, October 5 (Queen’s Birthday); Thursday, December 24 after 6pm and Friday, December 25 (Christmas Eve and Day); Monday, December 28 (Boxing Day) and Friday, January 1 (New Year’s Day).

On Christmas Eve services will be provided as per usual up to 6pm. After this time public holiday fees will be charged. On all of the other public holidays, essential services of personal care, medication assistance and meal preparation will be provided while domestic assistance, social support, respite and shopping services will not be.

DE VRIES CELEBRATES THE LIFE OF NELL - A BRISBANE TRAILBLAZER AND TRAVELLER A story about Brisbane’s first female cadet journalist, champion rally car driver and intrepid international adventurer has captured the attention of Jubilee client, historian and author Susanna De Vries.

De Vries, well known for her previous books focusing on Australian artists and biographies of outstanding Australian women, has released her latest book Nell.

The book tells the story of Nell Tritton, born in 1899 and heiress to the old Tritton’s furniture store on George St, Brisbane. After a family tragedy Nell was not content to travel the path expected of young girls of her time and wanted to live life to the full.

She travelled overseas, settling in Paris, wrote short stories and eventually married former Russian prime minister Alexander Kerensky.

This was the start of another adventure that included Nell using her rally driving skills to save her husband from Stalin’s assassins in a car chase through Montparnasse as the Germans invaded Paris.

Without giving too much of Nell’s story away, she and Kerensky returned to Australia and settled in her parents’ historic home Elderslie in Clayfield, Brisbane, in the mid 1940s. The house has since been relocated to Pullenvale.

For De Vries, the attraction to Nell’s story was too strong to ignore. “I loved Nell’s passion for Paris because that is where I studied art history and I lived on the same street as Nell lived in so I actually feel very close to her,” De Vries said.

“My great friend bought her house and Lavinia Tritton gave me some family information. I thought the history of the Trittons was very interesting for Brisbane people as (the store) was here long before Myers or David Jones. Everybody seemed to buy all of their furniture there. I had written a book on the history of Brisbane and so I thought this book on Nell combined all of the things that really interested me.”

For De Vries, Nell is the last biography of Australian women she will write. “I am now updating my book on impressionist artists and writing a new book on international women artists,” De Vries said. “My Jubilee carers make it possible for me to work and so I am still writing books.”

STAY CONNECTED PROJECT RELAUNCHES Are you keen to get out, make some new friends and try some new activities after months at home? Jubilee Community Care is relaunching its free Stay Connected Project.

Now with COVID-Safe plans in place, Jubilee is running the Cooking for One or Two program, a very popular activity in the first Stay Connected round.

The University of Queensland’s Institute for Social Science Research will gather data, evaluate and publish the findings.

JUBILEE ONLINE OFFERINGS EXPANDED  BodyMoves Exercise Classes - Tuesdays weekly.

 I Have A Story! Writing Workshops - Wednesdays for eight weeks.  Mindful Connections Workshops - Thursdays for eight weeks.

Jubilee Community Care is forging ahead with our recently introduced online services with new offerings available this month. Existing online classes include Body Moves – a gentle armchair exercise class - while the first of our Mindfulness and Nutrition courses have just wrapped up with more to come.

We are offering our Mindfulness course online again by popular demand. Run

by Jon Unal from Conscious Beginnings, the course will empower and support older people to reduce their isolation and improve their wellbeing, resilience, mental health and self-care. The program will run online from 10am-11.30am on The Jubilee - Jubilee Community Care’s Newsletter

Thursdays from October 15 to December 3.

We also have the I Have a Story! Writing Workshops run by author and arts therapist Fiona Ware. The online workshops encourage participants to unleash their creativity and start writing about their lives - a powerful tool to acknowledge who we are, where we have come from and what we’ve learnt along the way. The course will run online from 10am-11am on Wednesdays from October 14 to December 2.

For all online courses you will need access to a computer/tablet and internet, but only basic computer knowledge is required. And if you are not confident with technology but would like to join our online offerings there is help available - see side story.

At the end of each online class we will have social conversation sessions to allow you to make new friends or keep up with old ones.

Those who have participated in our online activities have found it worthwhile.

ACTIVITIES ARE BACK ON OUR CALENDARS Our activities program which has been on hold is slowly being reintroduced!

We have some new and innovative programs both in-person and online to keep our clients supported and engaged during the ongoing COVID–19 restrictions.

In the calendars on the following pages you will see the in-person COVID-safe activities as well as the online activities and the Stay Connected program.

Is there an activity you would like Jubilee to provide? Perhaps activities like walking or exercise groups in local parks, or other things. Please let us know.

And if you are still looking for something to do Brisbane City Council also has a wide variety of activities for seniors in its GOLD program. The program covers both active and healthy events, music, the arts and more. For more information visit www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/community-and-safety/community-support/seniors Jubilee may also be able to arrange for transport to attend group activities organised by the council. Please let us know if there is an activity you are interested in attending but note, transport with Jubilee is not guaranteed.

KEY EVENTS AS THE END OF THE YEAR NEARS It’s that time of year when the months just seem to slide by and Christmas is around the corner. On the Jubilee calendar we have a couple of important dates coming up which you might be interested in.

On Tuesday, November 10 Jubilee will hold its Annual General Meeting. This year the meeting will be online from 6pm. If you are interested in participating phone the office on 3871 3220. Links to join the meeting can then be emailed out.

On a more jolly note the Jubilee client Christmas party will be held on Thursday, December 10 from 10.30am. The annual event is always lots of fun so mark the date on your calendar. Limited transport will be available. Book in early by phoning activities officer Vicki on 3871 3220.

The activities team will take a break over the Christmas/New Year period with outings expected to start again in mid to late January.

JUBILEE COVID-19 UPDATE There have been some changes to Jubilee Community Care services in relation to COVID-19 since our July newsletter.

The adjustments, communicated to clients via a recent letter, are a result of changes in the pandemic environment.

Given requests from clients, we have reintroduced accompanied shopping services ensuring that our support workers follow Government and Jubilee Community Care procedures for physical distancing.

We have mandated the wearing of face masks for support workers when providing a personal care service (assistance with showering/bathing) lasting longer than 30 minutes.

We have made available reusable/washable face masks for staff to wear in public if they wish or if mandated to do so. The wearing of personal protective equipment including a face mask will assist in reducing the likelihood of an infectious transmission.

We are also expanding our suite of online services after an initial offering of exercise, nutrition and mindfulness programs. See story pages 4-5.

Jubilee and its wonderful staff have coped well throughout these past few months. What has not changed is our dedication to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our clients and staff.

All staff are trained and their competencies assessed in infection control and hand hygiene. All staff have completed online COVID-19 infection control training provided by the Australian Government.

Staff check their temperature before work and do not to attend work if their temperature is 37.5+c or they feel unwell. Support workers also telephone clients ahead of their service to check the client’s health status in relation to COVID-19 and influenza symptoms. If a client has any such symptoms alternative safe service provisions will be arranged.

We have adequate stock of personal protective equipment for staff use. Staff also have continued to access our mandatory education program that, in addition to infection control and hand hygiene education, covers First Aid, CPR, medication management and manual handling training.

We have strongly encouraged staff to get a flu vaccination and our Enterprise Agreement provides free vaccination for staff. We have also offered to cover the cost of staff receiving a 2nd booster influenza vaccination.

CLIENT FEEDBACK IS MUCH APPRECIATED It is our hope at Jubilee Community Care that all of our clients and their families feel they are treated respectfully and with care and compassion in every interaction they have with us.

And it seems Jubilee is hitting the mark with the results of the latest client survey in. Our clients were asked a series of questions for the survey, with results being based on 177 replies.

The survey, very comprehensive in measuring clients’ satisfaction with our services, returned overwhelmingly positive results. These include:  Jubilee treats clients with dignity and supports them to make choices affecting their health and wellbeing - 99% Satisfaction  Jubilee works with clients to assess their needs, plan and review services and has high levels of communication regarding care and services - 97.5% Satisfaction  Clients are confident in Jubilee’s policies, procedures, client communication and staff practice of its Infection Control measures - 98.5% Satisfaction  Jubilee enables clients to remain independent at home and maintain their wellbeing through services and its activities program - 99% Satisfaction  Clients are satisfied with Jubilee staff, their conduct and the way in which services are carried out - 98% Satisfaction  Clients have knowledge of and are confident and comfortable with Jubilee’s feedback and complaints processes - 97.5% Satisfaction  Clients are confident in the governance and management of Jubilee Community Care - 99.5% Satisfaction  Clients would recommend the services of Jubilee Community Care - 100% Yes The clients were also able to provide written feedback in relation to Jubilee, again overwhelmingly positive. Statements from numerous respondents included: You are very good at what you do; Staff are keen to assist, polite and timely; Care during COVID is exceptional; Service is exceptional; I am able to live at home because of Jubilee; Jubilee staff are the salt of the earth; Thank you for providing a service that I can trust; The support workers (are) always cheerful and ready to help; I value consistency of service, times and carers; Staff are well trained, respectful and friendly; Jubilee is a well conducted organisastion; They take a genuine interest in me; and Flexibility and excellent communication.
